Is that 00S31, like zero zero S31, or is it OOS31 like in the letter O?

Still a rumor: rear seat cushion...does it split 60/40?
I picked up my car today from the shop. The knocking sound at idle is gone after they replaced the clutch, pressure plate and slave. All associated fluids were changed too. It still has a loud idle and when I lightly step on the gas while at idle when the car is in neutral and not pressing on any pedals I can produce a rat a tat tat sound. this occurs between idle and 1000 rpm.
I will wait and see how this develops. Besides, I will have to bring it again before my wheels fall off. I'll wait until I get the recall notice.
On the bright side: At least it isn't the front wheels that fall off!
The car is better, at least a little. The dealer did do their best too.
i wonder if it is possible that the poor behaving clutch caused additional strain to the engine or damaged the engine some how to create this rat a tat tat? I think it should purr like a kitten under these conditions. Still I have heard the zetec is not the smoothest engine in the world. Am I being too picky now? I am uncertain. That's why I am going to give it some time. I am somewhat happier about my z.
Still a great car. For new buyers: Buy a 2001 or a MY2000 that was built in August 00. You can tell by looking on the sticker of the driver's door! Good luck to all.
If it was me I would buy 2001!

ND and drebe, did you guys have anything to do with this?

translate- zero zero (model year) S (as in saftey) three one
recall is implemented , i am done forever with ford. i will trade my z
in a heartbeat.i will state here that those who have said i told you so,
were right and i couldnt be more wrong.this is absolutely the worst
news about the z that i could have heard. quite frankly, it is very dis-
couraging and any fond feelings i have for this car has turned sour.
i have been a very vocal supporter of this car and ford in general. this
is it for me,ive had enough and please accept my sincerest apologies to
the honda supporters who had it right. there is no excuse whatsoever
for such shoddy workmanship. this has been my very last purchase of a ford.

Sorry to hear about the recall and that some of you are discouraged or having problems. Maybe I'm just lucky (I don't think so but..) But I just wanted to restate for any potential buyers that many of us have had 10,000 trouble free miles, and hope for many more. I have not had a single recall and I love this car, which was CHEAP and is nearly perfect.
Are there any detremental side effects to using these covers?
TIA
So when you get your letter, call the dealer, wait for parts, schedule your appointment and in a matter of weeks you will have a safe car again unless your wheels have fallen off .... till the next recall
I am not at all surprised about these recalls. Look at the Contour (another Euro design) and it must be the King of Recalls. Our MY2000 has had its fair share and it will have more without doubt. To allow these hiccups to upsetting is counterproductive.
This recall was not a quality issue, but a consistent manufacturing error. To vow off Ford for a manufacturing error is too harsh (imVHO--in my very humble opinion), besides, just wait till they bring the 2001 Mondeo to USA. You'll want to buy one.
Recalls always sound very ominous too. e.g. Steering wheel has the potential to fall off during Formula 1 style driving. (Escape)
See what I mean?
For me, I just can't take a recall personally, I am just going to get it fixed. I hope Ford will give us a gift as compensation. (any word?)
(Pretty simple guy, eh?)

Well said!
Where would we be without Ralph Nader? And I still like the Corvair. Was ahead of its time and had some safety problems which could have been solved.
Still happy with my ZX3. Much happier that I was with the second generation Escort. Expect this sort of thing with first year model and the great thing is we are notified, generally speaking, before something bad happens.
Now if Ford implements the "Lincoln Commitment Special Handling" for the Focus Owners, I'll be really happy. Door to Door loaner car, vacumning, wash, and full tank of gas. What more can we ask for?

by the way... dont mind my horrid sentence structure...
is affected. at least in the 50's ,60's+70's
there was more metal to protect the occupants
i am a survivor of one horrific accident where
a rear tire + front tire blew.i met a telephone
pole, real quick. i wont belabor the details.
however,a wheel coming off ,is serious
business. i dont sweat the nuisance recalls
but this one about the wheel, gets my head
spinning.
