Hi. I'm the (more or less) happy owner of a '01.5 Passat wagon. Bought in June of '01, it has approximately 13k on the clock.

My question: has anyone out there installed the sport spring package? If so, what does it do to the ride? Firm it up, I imagine. Does it do anything to help reduce the body roll?

    Thanks!

With prices going up (gas and diesel)

Last week in NJ (I normally fuel up at a small truck stop which has a car pump), I paid $1.19 a gallon. Yesterday I paid $1.27 a gallon.

But in general prices in eastern PA & NJ prices are in the $1.30 to $1.60 range, where gas prices are in the $1.30 to $1.50 (regular gas) range.

I have decided to purchase a Passat wagon. However, there appears to be a significant shortage of available wagons here in the northwest. I have seen a few available vehicles at local dealers, but all the sales-people have told me that the price is not negotiable, and they will only accept MSRP. They claim that the invoice shortage, and high demand have resulted in this situation. I really want to buy a Passat, but paying full price gives me a bad taste in my mouth. Any suggestions??
  • mhkimminsmhkimmins Member Posts: 3
I ran the TMV New vehicle price calculator, and found that the Edmund's TMV for the 3 levels of Passat wagon (GLS, GLX V6, GLX 4motion) are each about $500 over invoice, or $2000 under MSRP. The dealers that I have talked to would laugh at that. The TMV calculator was supposed to be specific for my area code. What is going wrong? Has everything changed in the market since Edmunds gathered the data upon which the TMV calculation is based?
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
I really don't think that Edmunds TMV is actively
adjusted to Market Conditions...At the same time
there are better prices available than MSRP on
    Passat Variants...

You need to become pro-active and expand your search & your horizons...

Although it is not available on line yet VWOA is
going to expand it's *Locator* section to include
a new Button called *LTO*(Locate to Own)...You can
almost do the same thing now...

    mhkimmins,

I live in Virginia and bought a 2002 Passat GLS V6 wagon with leather, monsoon, luxury, and tiptronic. I actually got the car for approximately $400 UNDER invoice! How did this happen? Well, I simply searched dealer inventories and found that this one dealer had this car on special. The only reason I can think that the car was on sale was that it is Candy White/black interior and didn't have an in-dash cd player. I promptly bought a cd changer for the back (works great!) and I like white cars.

If you are patient and look hard enough, some deals are to be had....good luck in your search!

Anyone have pricing and specs on the VW Passat W8 either in sedan or wagon format? The vehicle is coming out asap; I just saw a print ad for it.
  • barkasy1barkasy1 Member Posts: 44
A dealer I was working with called me today. He knew I was looking for a wagon. He said he was getting in a W8 next week (Reflex with grey). I asked him on pricing and he thought it would be like 39K. Sounds about 2K high, but again, I have no real data.

Saw my first two Mini-Coopers today and they had no window stickers. Dealer wanted like 30K for them which is way high. Oh the games dealers play....

MSRP on the W8 Wagon is $38,700 + $550 Destination
is $$39,250.00; so the Dealer gave you the correct info...

Has anyone had problems with the Monsoon Stereo? I have 02 Passat 1.8T Wagon, tip, roof, auto, monsoon, have 3025 miles on it. Use the car daily, got in and the stereo will not turn on. I checked the fuses, all are fine. Have to take it to the dealer. I am very disappointed!!!!
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
that if you remove & replace fuse #s 37 and 42
you may be able to correct yourself...I do not
mean buy new; just take them out and put them back...:)

I have a 2001.5 GLX Variant and this car is plucking my last nerve!

I'm at 27K and already had the car in 5 times for the drivers seat.

Seems that when I'm driving down the road and initally step on the breaks, or slow down, the seat actually makes a 'clunk' and will occastionally 'creek' when the force(forward or backward) changes.

Luckily I had this all documented before 24K and the dealer actually replaced all of the motors in the drivers seat because they stopped working.

Now today, I get in the car and the drivers seat is rocking--almost like a rocking chair and after a few starts and stops in rush hour traffic, the metal on metal creek was back again.

For a damn 32,000 car this is rediculous!

Also when I came into this thread, there was a comment about someone else commenting about the crappy plastic and how their car creeks.

Lets, see, when I place my arm on the arm rest on the drivers (or passenger) door--and push in (even very slightly)--the plastic creeks, I've had the car to the dealer 3 times to have them get rid of a creek in the cowling of the sterring wheel (its still there but bearable now), and when I have the arm rest extended to use the tiptronic, any pressure on my elbow causes the platic there to creek. I also hear creeks and clunks coming from the rear of the car.

While I will tell you that I will NEVER buy another VW, I really like the car and I'm really disappointed that VW would try and rip people off by charging 32K for a car full of plastic on plastic. I'm really mad at myself for buying this car now and wish I could just have a manual seat that wouldn't move by itself.

There's also a TSB (thanks to the posters on vwvortex) on the Monsoon wiring being reversed.

What car doesn't have plastic? I hear you about wanting a manual seat, but I still want manual steering for the better road feel, so what do I know. ; ^ )

I have the 1.8T, automatic, leather, Moonsoon and I'm having a problem with a strange clicking noise. It sounds kind of, but not exactly, like the sound the turn signal makes. The difference is that it seems to be coming from somewhere near the left side of the steering column, whereas the clicking of the turn signal comes from somewhere on the right side of the column. Also, the mysterious click sometimes only clicks once.

It is very bizarre. Has anyone encountered this? I haven't had time yet to take it in for service.

I purchased a GLS 2001.5 Passat Sedan 4 cyl turbo. It is equipped with the luxury package, Monsoon, sound, cold weather, package; pretty much everything except the leather.

I found Edmunds pricing very accurate. I paid exactly $33 higher than the TMV price for this car. Not bad for a $24K car...
  • 55kld55kld Member Posts: 2
Thanks so much! I wiggled fuse #37 (I don't have #42)...and viola--the Monsoon worked! Thanks for you help, so glad I don't have to spend 2 hours at the dealership. And I am driving to LA today so the music is much needed. Thanks again ; )

Different sources give different mileage estimates for the GLX AWD. Highway is 24 in a VW ad and 26 on the Edmunds.com Specs and stats. I would appreciate some max mileage numbers people have obtained in their wagons. 24 is below my minimum value and might cause me to go for the GLX FWD.

I am shopping for a car with my wife and we are looking at the 2002 Passat Wagon GLX with 4-motion. We are attracted to the wagon as an alternative to an SUV.

I read, however, that the rear seats do not fold down in the sedan with 4-motion. Is this true in the 4-motion wagon as well? That really puts a cramp in the cargo hauling utility.

Also, the Monsoon stereo is listed in the literature as having a cassette deck, but no mention of a CD player. Is there a CD player as part of that stereo? Thanks for the help!
  • glxwagon4moglxwagon4mo Member Posts: 121
Yes the wagon has fold flat seats in a 2/3 - 1/3 configuration.

The CD player is separate and comes in three varieties: single in-dash, 6-disc in the cargo bay, and 6-disc in dash. The last option is probably the most difficult to find -- I've only seen it offered through a canadian company.

BTW...the wagon is an excellent alternative to an SUV!! 25K and still lovin it! :)

The mileage was 17/24 for the 2001 model and 19/26 for the 2002 model - nice little improvement. The VW add you saw probably has old data.

About 100 posts ago, someone with 3 kids asked about power from the 1.8T being enough to handle this kind of load. A few posts later someone stated that the 1.8T lags when the a/c is running. I'm considering the Passat wagon for my wife but I have two questions. First, is the 1.8T big enough to haul 3 kids (and 2 adults) while running the a/c with minor performance sacrifices? Second, how is the Passat for room with the same number of people? It was recommended that I take a look at a used A6 Avant instead. Better choice for the above considerations? I'd appreciate what you have to say. Thanks in advance.

Any explanation, or does your eloquent statement just close the matter so we can move on to something else? ; ^ )
  • dudleyrdudleyr Member Posts: 3,469
I would say the best way to find out would be a test drive. The Passat is much cheaper than the A-6, and has the same amount of room. The 4 is plenty quick (unless you need to go over 140 mph), but I have never driven the automatic.
  • porknbeansporknbeans Member Posts: 465
Thanks for your suggestion. I have taken the VR6 with AWD for a drive and had a great time. The test drive was just me and the sales guy. I'm curious to know if anybody has the 4 cylinder that has had 4-5 people in it while the a/c was running. I suppose I could ask 4 friends to help me out but it's easier to see if someone has already done it. :)

Porknbeans, FYI, the current Passat v-6 is not a VR design. The Jetta wagon has a VR design 6 cylinder engine (15 degree V) which has a single cylinder head over the two narrowly separated banks. The Passat engine is a more traditional 90 degree V with completely separate heads on the two banks of cylinders.

I have driven the 1.8 w/ 5 people, but again it was the manual tranny. Cruised at 80 without breathing hard (75 mph limit here) and had plenty of power for passing. My father (who owns the car) took it up to an indicated 142 (he goes crazy every now and then when he drives on our desolate roads) Much quicker than my Integra (which still has plenty of power for me), and much much quicker than my minivan. It will be a little slower with the automatic. Actually the 1.8t with the manual tranny is faster than a v-6 with the automatic and 4-motion (more efficient drivetrain, and much lighter).

For what it is worth the one I drove/drive has only 150 hp the newer ones have 170/180hp depending on who you talk to. Unlike many performance 4 cylinder engines this has plenty of torque. 174 ft lbs @ 1950 rpm. For comparison the Honda S-2000 with a larger 2.0 liter engine has 153 ft lbs at over 7,000 rpm.

Torque is what shows how strong an engine is. To get more torque out of an engine you need to make a bigger or better engine, to get more hp out of it you just have to rev it higher (or make it able to rev higher). Back to the s-2000 240 hp at over 8,000 rpm. Keep it at normal revs and it is really nothing too special. I am not bashing the vehicle (it is a nice sports car, and very fast if you rev it high) just using it as an example.

Jetta Wagon/Variant no longer available with the
    VR6 as of week 40 2001...Only the 2.0L, 1.9L TDI,
    and the 1.8L Turbo...Just FYI...;)

Anybody know if any changes are planned for the 1.8 GLS in 2003? When are they scheduled
to come out? Will the style change at all? Price? Is it better to wait for an O3 or try to get the
    last of the 02's?

Thanks for the correction...I had referred to the vw.com website for the info the day I posted it. Guess VWoA needs to update the 'engine specs' sheet. :->.

I've just started looking for a manual trans GLS wagon. I'd like the Monsoon as the only option and am fairly flexible on color. Want to buy by the end of the month to take advantage of the great finance rates. Called all the local dealers plus a few farther away. Was told there's not much left. Dealer A had one equipped as I want, but in a color I don't want (silver). Dealer B had one exactly like I want "on the boat" that would be here in 6-8 weeks. He said if I signed for it by the end of the month I could "lock in" the interest rate for 30 days, and he belives VW will continue the finance rates thru May, giving me another 30 day lock in period. Dealer C had just what I want on the lot, but is located 275 miles away. My questions:

    1) How likely would it be that dealer A could trade what he has for another with a color I like? He said "he'd see what he could do", but I haven't heard back--I'm sure he'd rather I'd take the silver one.

    2) Should I trust dealer B that I will get the one from the boat in 6-8 weeks? Anyone heard whether the special interest rates will continue thru May?

    3) If I buy out-of-town from dealer C, am I asking for more trouble than it's worth re: getting warranty service? What do local dealers think about working on cars bought elsewhere?

    Advice would be appreciated!
  • glxwagon4moglxwagon4mo Member Posts: 121
    1) If dealer A was really interested in working with you, it seems as if he would have already taken the effort to look in his area for the EXACT vehicle you're looking for.

    2) Don't know -- wait to see what VWguild says

    3) Depends on the quality of your local dealer -- I ended up going with your third option when we bought our '00 wagon. The selling dealer was 100 miles away (the local dealer was asking $500 more for the very same car -- ie they were going to get the car from the dealer that we ended up buying from!). I ended up having all of my service performed at the local dealer -- never had any problems with any warranty issues.

You are lucky to have found this many period...

We are winding up the MY2002 cars, and there were
not many 5 Speed Manuals built to begin with; so
you will probably need to be flexible...

Dealer *B* is asking you to contract and pay for a
car that you will not get for about two months...
You may want to do that, but the Dealership cannot report the sale until it is actually at the store & this may cause a problem with Volkswagen Credit...maybe not...I have never even
entertained the notion of doing that...

Best bet...Take the trip, and get the car that is
on the ground at Dealer *C*...

VWGuild is right... not many five speed manuals were built for MY2002. I got lucky and got a five speed with all the options I wanted and the color I wanted. Keep in mind that they don't make many wagons to begin with plus wanting a manual tranny further complicates things. On top of that if you want certain options or want to omit certain popular options you are looking at an almost impossible situation. All I can say is that I was lucky...

I just tried buying a GLX 4motion passat wagon today. The dealer showed me the inventory for our state (Washington). There were maybe only 25 available. He claimed that once those were sold it "over" - the passat assembly line is now building W8 and they're done building GLX's for this year. Is this true?
After finding one that I liked (blk/blk) we started discussing price. I offered 1k under msrp (slightly higher than TMV). He talked to his boss but they came back with only $200 under msrp so I walked out. Any advice?

I'm interested in hearing from those current VW Passat Wagon owners who previously owned a Volvo XC or V70. We are currently considering these two vehicles and would like to hear comments from those that have experience with both.

    Thanks!

We got our GLX 4motion wagon in December (silverstone grey/black). The dealer did not have the particular color combo we wanted but located one for us within a week and we paid about $800 over invoice (info from Edmunds). We are in CT.
GLX 4motion wagons are not that prevalent, but I think $200 under MSRP is high for that car.
  • icefan1icefan1 Member Posts: 14
    J. Allen, what dealer in Washington did you go to? I am shopping for a Passat Wagon in the Seattle area and have noticed they are very popular. Not really interested in paying top $ for it though and may consider other alternatives (9.5 ARC or V70).
  • j_allenj_allen Member Posts: 2
icefan1 - I went to Chaplins in Bellevue. The salesman I worked with dug up the available Passat wagons for the whole state so the availability for all dealers seems pretty low.

I just got an unrelated email from Chaplins (which I got through requesting the price directly from Edmunds.com) and I got quoted a slightly better price of 31,781. I assume that doesn't include destination charges so that's still $500 over Edmunds TMV.

Since I believe 2003 models will offer ESP as an option I'm leaning towards waiting until then. Good luck on your search!

I went ahead and began negotiating with "Dealer C" (the one that's 275 miles away)on Friday. We exhanged emails and phone calls. This was the first time I've tried buying a car like this, and I must say I liked it. It's amazing how fast the salesman can turn things around with the sales manager when you're not sitting in his office :-)

To make a long story short, things broke down with my last offer of $22,400 ($357 over TMV) vs. his of $22,550. He passed on an easy sale over $150! They had just gotten the car on the lot a few days earlier, and if I understand holdback right, they would've gotten over $450 for that, plus more than $1000 over invoice. Guess they figured they could get more for this "rare" car that no one wants!

The only other '02s I can find are in unacceptable colors or unacceptably equipped, and why pay $500 over TMV to get "last year's" model? I plan to wait til the '03s come out, then order exactly what I want. I'm thinking I can get closer to TMV by ordering, since 5-speed GLS wagons appear to be so rare.

I'm curious to know if anyone here who has a 5-speed GLS wagon with no leather or lux was able to get it for TMV or under?

I am in the Eastern Washington - Northern Idaho area and can't find anyone who will sell me a 4-motion. They are saying I have a wait of six months. Does anyone know when the 03 will be arriving and when dealers will start placing orders for the 03? I bought a new A4 Audi last fall and it seem like the dealer could be a little more helpful since I already dropped 31K with that purchase. Are thing really that tight?

    Greetings,

I know this is an old question, but it is also an old list. So, forgive me if this question is too redundant for you...

I am debating b/n a GLX 4Motion and a Subaru VDC. The ONLY thing stopping me from ordering a GLX tomorrow is the perception that after 50k, I will be making yearly repairs.

To all of you current Passat owners: what sort of problems have you encountered? Are parts hard to get? Are repairs expensive?

    Thanks,
    Bart
  • allhorizonallhorizon Member Posts: 483
I have a GLX 4Motion wagon. My experience with both VW and Subaru is that they may have a few more problems initially, but hold up better after 80,000 or 100,000 miles than, say Honda or Toyota. Luckily these first things that go wrong are covered under warranty. In fact the VW warranty is great. The 4Motion AWD is extremely reliable - I don't think it ever breaks.

In my Passat, I had a temperature sensor fail, a problem with the radio, and a memory problem in the automatic drivers' seat. That may sound like a lot for a car with 25,000 miles, but is pretty typical for a VW. As I said above, in my experience these things don't continue to break after the first year or too.

I also have an almost 10 year old Golf (130,000 miles) that has been my most reliable car so far. Except for a sunroof switch, not a single problem in the past 5 years.

By the way, in several tests the 4Motion (=Audi quattro for the Passat) has done better under adverse conditions than the VDC. Both are nice cars, but I think the Passat has an edge concerning performance, interior, and smoothness of the engine (even when compared to the H6).

I am pretty impartial on these: I have owned two Subarus before, and my next (second) car is probably going to be the 2004 Forester Turbo, since VWoA can't seem to get the Jetta TDI 4Motion wagon over to the US for me…

    Good luck,

    - D.

5-speeder, I ordered a 5-speed manual wagon in March. The dealer told me it 'was on the boat' and I guess it was. The saleman kept me up to date on the progress of the car. I only had to put down $500 refundable to get the car delivered. They also said they would be able to lock-in financing (which became moot since they extended it). The only problem was that it did not have the Monsoon stereo that I wanted, but they took that out of the purchase price (at wholesale cost of course). I didn't want the home link, but I think almost everyone has to get the home link. I also got the cold weather package. I went $400 over TMV because none of the other dealers were willing to order a 5 speed without more of a commttment. Plus the dealership was down the road from my house. The arrived a couple of weeks ago and so far I love it (except for the Turbo lag, but what can you expect given the price).
Given my experience, I would go ahead and order the car, but I wouldn't get locked into buying it, they shouldn't expect you to commit without seeing and driving the car. You will have to sign a contract but only put down a $500 deposit.
