I had a very hard time deciding between the Honda Accord Coupe and the Passat but I just called the dealer and made my final decision to buy the Passat
Question: Does the Passat really take premium gas only?
Also, I know this topic has been thrown around many times, but is it worth my money to buy the Bumper to Bumper Masterguard Extended warranty?
I was told that the Passat, since 1998, has been bulit on the Audi A4 platform so, to predict the reliability of a Passat, isn't it a better idea to look at the track record of an Audi A4? How is that track record, by the way?
but this is the last 2001 passat with these amenities for this price, trust me, I called about seven dealerships. There are very few left, most of them are demo cars with about 5,000 miles on it.
I bought an old one last month-the dealer would not budge at all from advertised price(standard sedan,no options at all, list exactly $22,000 for $18,500. Now the same standard is in our local paper for $17,900.These prices are out the door,no extra dealer charges-just state taxes. So I would say the price for the car you are considering could be lower. More importantly, though,I an THOROUGHLY enjoying my car.It is the best car I've ever owned. In other words, don't get too bogged down with price.Make tour best deal,of course, but you will end up with a fantastic car.
Sorry that I missed your question...But, better late than never... With your lease expiring in the Fall you will be dealing with two unknowns... 2002 pricing, which is unavailable at this time, but, although I am sure there will be increases, they should be slight...The other is market conditions and availability. At this time 4MO wagons in either GLS or GLX configurations are very scarce. Wagons are generally always produced in smaller numbers than Sedans; so you will have to keep that in mind.
Another factor that might warrant some consideration, depending upon your preferences, is this Winter's Introduction of the Passat Plus...W8 engine...4.0L, 280HP, 4MO Std., and possible Six Speed Manual Trans. This car will, no doubt, will be available in both Sedan & Wagon. www.vwvortex.com will have updated information on this release as the year progresses.
To your question regarding price differences...Using todays #s, there is a difference of $1071 between the GLS & GLX all options included for the GLS. The difference between the two is that the GLX will give you bilateral Power Front Seating with 3 person/position Memory which can be remote controlled, Climatronic Heating and AC, 16" Wheels & Tires.
www.vw.com will let you configure your new Passat & Price it as well as locate several Dealers in your area of Colorado. And speaking of Colorado... Although the name no longer applies, The new VW/Porsche SUV will be available for 2002 as well...Have fun shopping...
Why is it that many WV dealer internet sites indicate that you can find out new Passat inventory and prices, then when you log on end saying "contact us" and provide little or no information whatsoever? What's the point of the web site if you still have to contact a dealer -- something maybe early researchers (or near buyers for that matter) are not ready for? Has anyone had a good experience purchasing a Passats strictly on-line?
I believe my region is slightly atypical, with there being a severe shortage of Passats, particularly in the more popular colors. Ordinary operating stock would be 8-10 GLX Automatics, and 4-6 5-speeds. We currently have 2 Automatics, and 1 5-speed. I've gotten about 25 requests in the past 72 hours for Silver GLX's. I guess no one has any.
Well, I did it. I bought a demo 2001.5 GLX Passat over the weekend. Silverstone Grey with gray interior. Looks fabulous. Invoice price. I saw one of the salespeople driving the silverstone, but it had beige interior. Gray interior looks much better. Still can't believe I did it. Hoping to enjoy my Passat for a very long time! Thanks to all of you for the info and insights! As I have experiences to share, I'll post and let you know how it's going!
Northeast dealer offer price for a Reflex Silver Passat GLX automatic 2001.5 for $28,600 including ALL fees, (even doc fee) except plate transfer and taxes. Everyone in my family seems to feel this is a good price. Something inside me says I can do better elsewhere. What do you think? Would like to buy at this dealer, but I really didn't want to spend more than $28,350. Thinking of looking elsewhere, but would have to go out of 10-30 miles out of town.
I've seen better, but not much. You'll have to decide how much trouble it's worth to save a couple hundred. You're less than $1000 over invoice on a popular car.
Personally I think it's a good price. Perhaps you can do better but how important is the couple hundred bucks you'll save in the overall scheme of things. More importantly at least to me would be is it the color combo you really want and is it s decent dealer, perhaps where you'll have the car serviced. In the overall scheme of buying an almost 30k car I'll gladly pay a couple of hundred bucks more to do business with a good dealer who is closeby and with whom I'll have the car serviced. A lot of times dealers will treat their own customers better than someone elses by doing such things as offering loaners, free car washes, discount on parts etc. In addition and as naive is this probably is I believe in attempting to establish and maintain a relationship with a particular dealer if at all possible.
I'm not sure what the true definition of a "demo" model is, but dealer considered mine a demo at 850 miles. Stamkis, I think $28,600 is a good price for the GLX auto, does that include in-dash CD? If, so you're doing well. If you like the color and the dealer, it's might be worth purchasing at that price. I heard Reflex Silver is somewhat scarce. You may want to email a few other dealerships that are further away and see what their willing to do before driving the distance. Tell them what you've been offered and see if they match.
i,ve been looking at passats. recently our area had a major hail storm. I found the car i was looking for. gls silverstone, black leather, luxury pkg tip. the dealer said they would fix and warranty the work to repair all the dings and back glass. anybody have a good idea what this car is worth(discount wise). also anyone in the st. louis, mo. area have any dealer suggestions good or bad?
Just came back from a dealer and got a offer as following. Is this a good deal? 2001.5 Passat GLX 4 Motion, Reflex Silver/Grey leather
Invoice $29,016 Destination Charge $ 550 SF Bay Area Assoc. $ 75 Floor Plan Interest Reserve $ 92 Port Pre Fee $ 25 -------------------------------------------------------- $29,758
Got a deal for $30,400 Doc Fee $ 45 License $ 446 Tax (8.25%) $ 2,508 ------------------------------------------------------ DRIVE OUT $33,399
IF the car is TOTALLY fixed to PERFECTION by a paintless (You know.. the "dent doctor/wizard/magician" people) dent removal process than the car ought to be OK.
If it's been repainted... $2K wack right there.
Because that car is going to be worth that much less as a trade-in a few years down the road.
In fact, if you can get that kind of a discount on a car with paintwork like that, and the money factors are reasonable... I'd go ahead and lease it since the residual will be the same as a never-damaged car but the car will have had paintworkand be worth less. It's a safe way of hedging your bets.
If you are posting here...I would think that you know that is an awesome deal...particularly from a Bay Area Dealer...No Mark-up? It is still early...I would get back there quick!!!
For compaison purposes, I bought a white/beige 2001.5 GLX w/tip and in-dash CD for $28,554 + TTL in Dallas, TX. It had 22 miles on it. A savvy negotiator probably could have gotten it for less, but I was satisfied.
I placed a deposit with my dealer for a 2001.5 GLX wagon with 5 spd manual. There hasn't been any inventory anywhere, and my dealer said there was a shipload of VW's arriving in Boston the first week in May. Now he tells me the ship came in, and there wasn't a stick shift GLX wagon on the boat. VW has customers lined up an waiting and then they don't provide them with a full range of choices. I don't get it.
I hope you agreed to pay enough for the wagon. If not you will surely be bumped to the back of the list. You might want to ask them if you paid more if you could get it quicker. $2000 over cost is enough to get any dealers attention and is not unreasonable to get what you want.
That is strange advice on that wagon. Offer a bribe to get the car faster? What I would recommend, is that you ask them for a VIN on the car you ordered. If they can't provide it, that means either the car hasn't been built yet, or they just took you out of the market to hurt their competitors. Check around other dealers in your area to test the assertion that none are out there. I just got an allocation of wagons, and there was a GLX 5-speed on it, so they are out there. Hopefully, there's one in your area too.
Strange response. The reasonable nature of paying an extra $2000 is purely up to the one who has to spend the money. It also not a bad thing to understand the difference between want and need. Investing $2000 could easily be $4000 on 7 years, $8000 in 14 years, $16000 in 21 years and $32000 in 28 years, etc.. etc... I for one have a very difficult time telling someone how and where to spend their money. It must be a special talent.
Thanks for all the advice and support from all. I ended up buying a GLX Reflex Silver with gray leather interior automatic - no 4 motion or CD changer for $28,700. ($200- $400 more than I wanted.) Originally, I had a deal with a local dealer for $28,500 but he didn't have this color scheme in stock and couldn't or wouldn't get the car for me. He told me that there were two Reflex Silver with gray leather GLX's without 4 motion left in my state and none in port. So, I went to a dealer about 10 miles from home - not the one I'll be servicing with. This dealer was willing and able to get the car for me.
Once I felt the car was rare I got caught up in my emotions and made the mistake by NOT agreeing to a price before looking at color and availabilty. Kimmers71 suggested this in a previous post. I should have listened. Please keep this in mind before you negotiate.
I know it only cost $200-$400 more than I wanted to spend, but the male ego is fragile and paying more when I could have paid less is ego deflating. Especially, since I know this dealer was far more eager to negotiate when I had a deal with another dealer. Regardless, this is going to be a fun car to drive and I am looking forward to driving it.
I purchased a 2001.5 Passat 2 weeks ago. It's a GLS, Reflex Silver with Lux Pkg, Tip. Auto, Monsoon and Home link. Sticker was $25,380 and I paid $24,300 with tax (7%) title, license, etc. the total was $26,180 delivered. The car was still in plastic when I picked it out. I live in Coral Springs FL. I love it!
Replying to Jason's message #1031. Thanks for the good advice. I did call other dealers, even a high volume dealer in CT, who I know from a previous purchase. GLX stickshift wagons he said, no problem, he could get two in the color I wanted. Great says I, I'll buy one. After setting up the purchase on the phone, he calls back two hours later. Oops, those two GLX's are already sold. So far two other upstate NY dealer have also come up empty. One guy said he had a GLS 6 cyl stickshift arriving in 8 weeks. I said I'd hold out for a GLX. Do they use Black Forest elves to make these things or what?
It sounds as though you are located in the greater metro NY area, might want to do what I did. Get a list of all of the dealers that you are willing to travel to, and call them all for their inventory of GLX wagons. Once you find the car, pack a lunch and take a road trip. Once you actually see the car, start talking the magic talk. It is truely the only way to get the car that you want. The line "I can locate it for you" ususally works, but when it is a popular color/rare combination, the dealer is under no obligation to give the unit up for swap. I have done this several times already, and it works. Good Luck!
hi guys, I went to BILL COOK dealer in Farminton today, they told me the sticker price in the 2001.5 GLS 1.8T's window is the sell price, no haggle in this model.
Try the internet, there are discounts in your area. You may just be talking to the wrong person. Try linking to a couple of the sites from Edmunds for starters, and you can try a couple of others after you get price quotes.
Hi John, I live in Auburn Hills and got my 2001.5 Passat GLS from Suburban VW in Troy. Here are my options: 1) Leather Package 2) Luxury Package 3) Monsoon 4) Homelink 5) Tiptronic Sticker price is $26880(destination fee already included). I got it for $24773.81. I shopped around(including Bill Cook)but Suburban gave me the best deal. I am sure they will work with you if you haggle hard enough. However, don't ever go to Fox VW in Rochester. They are a bunch of morons. I was so pissed with the way they treated me that I immediately went to VWoA HQ to file an official complaint. Can you believe that one of their salesman called me an "animal" when things didn't work out? Please let your friends and your friends' friends know, don't ever go to Fox. Sam
i did went to Suburban in Troy yesterday b4 i read your post, i made got a price from them much better than BILL COOK(what the heck that salesman thinking?), but Suburban didnt have my colors, so they tried to make a deal with other dealer. your price is better than mine, guess i was not haggle hard enough:( thank you again, i will post the outcome later, hopefully not to long.
I am looking at purchasing a 2001.5 GLX 5 speed with the Blue Silver exterior/black leather interior. First initial quote was $29,200. Looking at all of these other messages, that seems awful high. Any suggestions as to what I should expect to pay or offer? Hear the GLX manual is quite hard to come by. He did say they'd throw in an in dash cd player.
1 month ago in NC, I paid $27400 plus tax plus tags for a GLX 5 speed, Silverstone/Gray leather with in-dash CD. Invoice with destination charge was a little less than 26,800 including 117 for port and some other fee. 29200 is very close to MSRP. I suggest you arm yourself with the numbers and shop around. Let them know you are looking to get as close to invoice as possible. Make sure you are working from invoice up...
I have been searching for a 2001.5 GLS w/tiptronic in the St. Louis area. I am interested in what others in the St Louis area have experienced. I have been to 2 dealers who want anywhere from $1200 over invoice to MSRP. I haven't begun to seriously negotiate but it seems like Passat's are in big demand in the midwest according to carsdirect who quote prices of $1 below MSRP. Besides wanting to hear from other midwesterners about their prices, I was also wondering if GLS models are available without Monsoon package which I don't want to pay for. Also is there an "advertising" cost built into the invoice for the St Louis area. If the VW dealers are not willing to negotiate more, I will probably go for a 2001 EX Honda Accord, which I will be far less excited about (although wife and wallet will be pleased) . Thanks in advance.
There's a dealer in St Louts with 2 WV Stores...um... they think they are a "Team". Avoid em.
Try the guys in St Charles, Give Auffenberg in Belleville a try and I have heard very good things about Mid-America motors in Hazel wood.
A few people from St Louts have posted that cheap deals on Passats are tough there. Even so, To me it looks like a pretty strong deal on a Passats seems to be roughly $500 or so over invoice so you're $700 apart is my guess. Certainly you can try working that down, even so, I would buy the car that I wanted for a $700 difference. There's a different supply vs demand on Passats than Honda. Also, no sedan on the market anywhere near it price wise has the resale value of a Passat.
If it helps: Average nationwide inventory supply of Passats is 20 days, average discount is about $700.
what should I pay for a Passat GLS 1.8t w/ tiptronic, luxury package, monsoon and homelink? I have an offer for 25.8K - is that high? It's higher than the TMV from edmunds. Im in sarasota FL by the way. Thanks alot! Cuadan
Car has, from what you're telling me, an MSRP of $25,300 or so... So $25,800 is WAY too high...
Are there options you didnt mention? Even so, Try calling Reeves in Tampa. Tell them you live in Sarasota, are ready to buy if you get the right price. $500-800 over invoice ought to do it is what I think. If AND ONLY IF you were treated well by your local dealer see if they'll match the out of town offer, if not, buy it out of town. You're more likely to get a cheap price from Tampa or Ft Myers as you're out of there area and they know they have to be agressive to get your deal.
I'm a partner in a VW store...(Not in Orlando tho.. and Not Reeves we'd do that deal onan in-stock car. Not our usual margin, but if it was quick and easy I'd take it.
I know that the guys in Tampa have either $125 or $150 in advertising, plus the usual wholesale reserve and port prep junk... Even so thats barely $200...
The 2001.5, and I assume that is what you are talking about, with Cloth, Lux. Pkg., Monsoon, and HomeLink, and Tip has an MSRP of $25,380... Invoice is $23,301...As you can see, $25,800 is $420 over MSRP...an odd number for sure...
A year ago, a sophisticated buyer would have been quite comfortable paying $24,301, but tonight $23, 801 will take this car home anywhere... Of course, these numbers Do Not Include Any Regional Advertising Fees. I have to believe that *brentwood* knows those fees; so you are looking at $23,951 plus Appropriate Tax, Title & State fees, and a Doc. fee of $50 or so...
And, that invoice number is all inclusive Destination, Port Prep, & FloorPlan Interest Reserve are included...
I'm looking to buy a GLX Wagon 5-speed manual ("fully loaded" as the salespeople love to say -- with the wooden-ish interior panels, leather obviously, cd, tint, etc.) that is a 2001 model, but not a 2001.5. Seems like the dealer would do anything to get rid of this old news in a manual wagon. All 2001's (as opposed to 2001.5's) on the dealer's lot are advertised at $2000 off MSRP. I'm looking at an MSRP of about 30,000, and I know the invoice is at 26,900 with all the "extras." They've told me maybe we could get at 25,000 or so. So I'm thinking they're either crazy to go below invoice, OR they're getting that $2,000 as a factory to dealer rebate, and they can actually go below 25,000 reasonably. Thoughts?
