Cupholder1: thanks for the information. i investigated. my pay-off would be $10,606 if i were to buy today. edmunds says my trade-in would be $7609 and my private party sale would be $8625. So the difference (~$3000) will be rolled into my payments if i buy a Passat? Does this get split evenly across all of my potential payments or can i pay bigger payments up front so my interest is less later on? Will this add a significant amount to my payments? I guess i don't really have many options...the vw guy said maybe CarMax would buy it from me. they aren't going to pay me $10,606 if edmunds is saying $7609 though, right? am i just plain in a bad spot? How can i make the best of this?
Wait until you're not upside down on the trade before getting a new car... That is the best advice I can give... I would never trade in a car that I was upside down on -- unless I was trying to unload a problem car, lemon, etc. But to trade in just because the new car's fresh paint would look nice in your driveway? Don't do it.
Supposedly CarMax gives better prices than the dealer will give. I can't say if they do, but that's what I've read on these message boards.
I've been quoted a price of $27,904 (+taxes, title & tags)for a 2002 Passat GLX Automatic through my credit unions buying service. It sounds like a great deal to me, but I'm trying to see if I should shop it around some more. Any thoughts?
$27854.00...$50 over dealer cost would certainly be very attractive if only it were possible... Personally, I would ask the folks at your CU to verify the numbers...Or make sure that they are quoting you on a 2002...There is incentive money available on 2001s that would make this deal work, but not on a 2002...
Thanks for the info. I'll make sure that it is in fact a 2002. I've bought 2 cars in the past from the credit union and each time they have been as advertised, so I have no reason to believe that this on is any different. Sound like if it's true, it's a deal I can't pass up on.
It really has me wondering...Who is making the $$$$????Volkswagen Credit is offering APRs as low as 3.9%-5.7% (24-60mos).
Now, I supply cars for our local Credit Union's buying service here, and it is just like a Broker Deal...Customer gets a price from the buying service...buying service makes a couple hundred & the Dealer, of course makes a hundred or so depending on the car.
The only thing that makes any sense is that some one is on a different page...No one works for free...Starting from the CU's buying service Rep...they are normally on some sort commission based program, the dealer needs to detail & deliver the car, not to mention gas...
All of this would seem to spread that $50 pretty thin...
Is it really just $50? Doesn't VW have a 2% dealer holdback as well? So in reallity, it's $50 + 2% of the invoice price of the car. That makes a little bit more for the dealer and credit union to share.
LOL. Then too, there's also the fees. They're all legit you know: delivery fee, advertising fee, document fee, port prep, SPIF, locate fee. Yes, you pay sales tax on them---but we have have to charge you, sir. They're legit.
We have been looking since March for a Passat Wagon, 1.8T, Manual, Silverstone Grey, Grey Leather, Luxury Package, and Monsoon. Still none in the US and none slated for arrival. Dealer in SoCal can order 2002 with 6-8 weeks delivery for $25,992 ($500 under MSRP). Will throw in homelink and tinting. Includes all fees, except registration, sales tax, and title transfer. Is this a good deal for a factory order?
Harold, no, it's not a great deal. But if you're happy with the dealer it may be worth the extra money. He may "throw in" the homelink by discounting it. As vwguild can testify, this is a factory installed option.
First off--this site has some really amazing reviews so thanks already fro providing some solid info and opinions... My dilemma is deciding between buying a 2001.5 Passat v6 probably at the gls trim but maybe with monsoon and moonroof or buying a 2001 Audi a4 w/o the quattro Does anyone have any thoughts on this? which might be the better buy? The way i see it---the a4 is slightly "more sporty" and bit smaller than the Passat which i dont have a problem with however--i am a bit concerned with the idea of more expensive repairs on the A4 or what consumer reports says is a less relaible car (i dont see hwow this is possible being so similar to the passat and the audi vw connection) Any help you can provide on this would be great!! Also:: Do you think it better to try and buy a car before new years or after?? talking aobut the 01's here still and I am ready to buy as they say......thanks!
Is it "acceptable" to insist on the TMV price for an 02 passat glx? I was quoted +- 800 over TMV on a car that isn't exactly what I want, and am considering asking the dealer to order what I want iff (if and only if) he'll accept the TMV.
Picked up my new 2002 Passat GLX last night. So far (only driven 20 miles so far) I LOVE! the car. It's amazing how comfortable I feel in it. It's the most luxurious car I've ever owned.
Here are the details of my purchase: - 2002 Passat GLX - Automatic Tiptronic - Silverstone Grey/Black
Price was $29,480.20 (total including taxes & title)
Thanks for all the great information shared on this site.
I guess they didn't like that one because Invoice plus would you mean that you only paid $1626.00 in Tax, Title, & License...Congratulations & Welcome to the VW Family...
I'm new to this newsgroup but have been reading the messages for a while. I finally got down to looking at the VW Passat (to replace my aging but still reliable 1988 Accord).
I have been looking for a 1.8T manual GLS with leather package, homelink and the monsoon system. The color scheme is fresco green metallic/gray leather. This seems to be almost impossible to find as most VWs come with either both luxury and leather or none at all.
One dealer has offered me a price of $23,660 for the above car + luxury package (after some negotiation) which is below the Edmunds TMV of $24,225 when I last checked it, but also insists on a dealer service fee of $387 (in addition to all the usual documentation, tax, title, license fees) which provides (a) inscribing the VIN number (b) provinding a shuttle service when you bring the car in for service and (c) a loaner if you leave the car for more than 24 hours. I told him I wasn't interested in the DSF but they insist that it is non-negotiable and that "all import dealers" in charge something similar. Wasn't the case when I bought my Civic 5 years ago.
What do you guys think of the price? I'm just looking for a fair deal but I assume they are willing to price the car lower than the TMV because it is at the end of the year and they may have some extra incentives (does this really make a difference?).
Any advice/info you guys can provide is appreciated.
It looks like 2002 passats are selling for less than TMV or selling close to invoice+ $200. My questions are, - 2002 GLX AWD Sedan invoice is $29,016. How much is it in San Jose ? - What is the best deal anybody has got for 2002 GLX AWD and where ?
I am looking at a Passat GLS 1.8T manual. The MSRP is $22,755; Edmund's invoice of $20,742 is close to the $20,829 that the dealer showed me. Edmund's TMV of $21,178 is close to the $21,000 + $299 "administration fee" quoted by the dealer - except that this car has been "driven by a manager" and has 3100 miles on it!
From reading elsewhere about demo pricing, I am under the impression that the additional negotiating room on demos can be as little as 10 cents a mile, unless there are manufacturer incentives. I am wondering whether VW provides any dealer incentives for demos of this model.
I have also read elsewhere that VW may extend the warranty by the number of miles on the demo. Is this automatic, or does it apply only under certain conditions (such as to cars with at least 5000 demo miles)?
A journalist with an international newspaper is interested in hearing from people who've bought Volkswagens in the last few years. If you'd like to share your story, we'll need your daytime contact information, vehicle model and year and, if you like, please also provide a brief overview of your ownership experience to date. Please respond to jfallon@edmunds.com by Tuesday, March 25. Thanks for your consideration and participation.

Warranty can be extended to cover the existing mileage...it costs the Dealer a couple hundred bucks for the B2B Component; the PowerTrain is free...It is NOT Automatic...you will have to make sure that it is included in your deal...
And there is no Incentive $$$$ for any 2002 cars...
I just bought the Passat GLS 1.8T manual with luxury/leather/monsoon/homelink I mentioned in an earlier post for $400 (including the Dealer Service Fee) below the Edmonds TMV. I probably could have got a better price if I had not wanted a particular color combination which was not available at any of the other dealerships in town.
Good luck with your hunt for a Passat - I think you can do better (price wise) for a new car than the used one you mentioned.
I would take all of these claims with a grain of salt...There is no truth meter here...
Needless to say, it will depend upon where you live, Inventories & management...It will also depend upon how pricing is perceived...In Calif. and I am sure elsewhere, a favored ploy is to offer a car at a # over Invoice(Base) and then add Destination($550), Port Prep($25), FloorPlan INTEREST Reserve($92), and then possibly, a Regional Ad Fee. All of which a REAL Charges, but should be added to make for an "All Inclusive" Invoice price...I would be more than happy to fax to you an Invoice so that you can see what I am talking about...
The only Volkswagens that are being sold for Invoice or below are 2001s that are carrying Incentive Money from VWOA, or those that have all of the above mentioned fees added in after the fact...Or where the Dealer is making money on the spread between *Buy rate* & *Sell rate*...
This Brand has not had a "Distress" Product since the launch of the New Passat in 1997.
I am looking at the base GLS 1.8T 5M. Edmunds says the invoice price is $20,340, which includes the destination charge but no additional fees, and says the True Market Value is $20,765. CarsDirect says that the invoice price is $20,547, again including destination charges but also including "an estimate of additional fees charged by the manufacturer to the dealer". They post a price of $21,747, which I presume is what I would actually pay (plus tax and tag) if I bought from them. My inclination is to do more research, and see if this car can bought for about the TMV.
Just did some fiddling with the TMV calculator. Noticed that it did not take ZIP into account on first screen, but did when you choose "price with options".
The National Base Price (first screen) is $20,215, plus destination. Your Regional Base Price is $20,387, whereas mine is $20,132. Edmunds adds $83 to that if I select Silverstone Gray, $42 if Black, etc., then $550 destination. Total with Gray is $20,765.
Saw in the Wall Street Journal this morning that GM is about to announce $2002 rebates across all their lines. Speculation was that other domestics would follow, but no mention of VW. Did VW have any incentives last year?
Have looked into what happened last year. VW offered rebates to move out the 2001.5 Passat, and below-market financing (3.9%) on the 2002. That financing offer expired 12/31/01, according to kbb. It would seem reasonable to me to wait and see if VW participates in the new round of rebates that appears to be developing. GM's $2002 offer expires at the the end of February, so there should not be a long wait to see if there is a response.
I am planning to buy/lease a GLS 1.8T Auto in central NJ within the next few days. Edmunds is quoting me a TMV below invoice! How is this possible when Passat sales have steadily and substantially improved each year since the current version's introduction? I want a good deal but I don't want to come in so low on the price that the deal never gets off the ground. And is it true that there is no longer a holdback on VW's? I'd really appreciate your guidance as my current car comes off lease this week! Thank you.
You have configure the car with options, even if you are not selecting any...And Port Prep & FloorPlan INTEREST Reserve add $117 to the Invoice that only Edmund's does not include... Try getting Invoice from Carpoint & www.kbb.com as well...
If you got TMV below invoice, you probably chose the 2001 Passat by mistake.
For other makes I have looked at, you have to follow a separate link to get the previous year's prices. So I think that Edmunds has just made an error setting up their VW page, with both 2001 and 2002 models listed, thus making it very easy to select the wrong one.
I'm actively shopping for GLS V6 automatic with Mansoon, Leather and Luxary pkt. How much should I pay for such a vehicle in San Jose area. Visited few dealers. Dealers seem to ask 1.5K more that MSRP. Definately they are trying to inflate prices to get a better deal while negotiating. Edmund TMV is $27574. Also, is in-dash CD player a standard feature on 2002 passat GLS Thanks in advance for the responses.
Edmunds now shows VW offering the "incentive" of 6.75% financing. My home equity credit line currently offers a better rate - and is tax deductible to boot!
Got a quote from dealer in New Orleans for 27, 664...1K above invoice. Sales manager wouldn't even entertain the idea of dealer holdback. Said they couldn't consider it in the price of the vehicle even if its ordered for me.....which is probably what they will have to do b/c I want Blue Anthracite 5 speed with grey leather. Is this a good deal? I thought maybe I should shop around a little more.
Homelink is a garage door opener. You just do the setup, point your current garage door opener at it, push the button, Homelink records the signal, and from then on you just have to push the Homelink button to open the door. If your garage opener has fancy things like turning on lights and such, Homelink can record that, too. It's pretty convenient not having to clip a garage door opener to your visor.
My local paper ran a VW ad last Saturday 1/12. The ad specified a 2002 Passat GLS 1.8T w/5speed at $249/month for 36 months with $2817 due at signing. Lease based on $22300 MSRP (includes GLS 1.8T 5sp with premium stereo and freight). Ad specified purchase option at lease end of $12711. Must take delivery by 1/31/02. $2817 upfront includes $249 first payment, $1828 down payment, $250 refundable security deposit, and $490 acquisition fee.
I am not sure what this lease relates to in terms of a "lease money factor". Maybe vwguild could provide insight into this?
First off, I am having no luck finding a base model GLS 1.8T as described in the ad. Dealers said that lease will apply to GLS 1.8T with additional equipment, but I will need to pay amount over $22300 MSRP upfront to get same lease terms. The tricky part may be finding the right car to take delivery of by 1/31.
I am sorry that I did not have time to plug this in yesterday, and I don't work weekends, but I am concerned about your last paragraph...It looks to me like the typical *get em in on a low payment* ad...This car could have Leather, Lux., etc. You get the idea...
I custom order cars for clients everyday, find one that will get you exactly what you want...and be patient.
