Congrats on your new Passat. Sounds like you got a GREAT deal on a great car.

Its 2005, the new 2005 passat is out, but im looking at the 2004 GLX to save some cash, is there a huge difference in 04 and 05? The pricing difference would be about.. 6k. Around 30k for a 05, and 24k for a 04, both brand new, fully loaded. Should i go for this deal, the 04 that is.
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
No differences worth talking about - colors and some trim details. Go for it.
  • lmxlmx Member Posts: 35
what is the interest rate for the 04'

and maybe consider a gls vs. the glx especially in the 4-motion version there is not a big diffrence bettween both packages...

glx-electric seats, rain sensor and climatronic for a lot more $$$

did you try the 1.8turbo version?i would aim the 4 cylinder version, the v6 is not very impressive, lot's of midrange power but not as peppy as the 1.8t,and i'm not talking fuel economy where the 1.8t shines...trust me and go for the fully loaded gls and just add wood trim for a more glx looking interior...

I also don't think there are many/any changes that warrant the price difference. Hence, I purchased a 2004 myself last month at at $17,995. I financed it and got it at 4.95% for 60 months.

VW is completely redesigning the Passat for 2006, so there is another reason to stick with the 2004. I do not think that when you trade your Passat away down the road, you would get an extra 6K for having the 2005 model.

I also agree that the V6 Passat is not very impressive. The Acura TL that I tested has 270 HP I believe, while the Passat only kicks out 190 HP. The 1.8L Turbo only produces 20 less HP. I believe when I was looking around about a month ago in St. Louis, the prices were around $20,000 for the 4 cylinders and $22,000 for the 4 cylinder plus 4 motion. I would expect the prices to be even lower at this point.

Also, I was able to get a great deal on mine because I went on during a stretch of cold winter days and when I was at the dealership I was the only customer there. It actually snowed 3 inches that morning. So I recommend, if you are not in dire need of a car right now, wait for the weather to get bad or go during the weekday instead of the weekends when everyone else shops. Good luck and enjoy your new vehicle.

    Hi All,

Pleased to see that some folks are getting what appears to be some pretty good deals. I was hoping to get some input as to my situation.

Looking for a Passat GLS TDI. MSRP is about 26.5. We've missed advantageous deals over the holidays, but I really think there is a glut of TDI's right now. Spoke with a very knowledgeable and straightforward sales manager at Brandon VW (Tampa, FL). He advised waiting to see what happens in March. I don't know what to expect be it rebate, advantageous financing, etc.

The new Passat comes out summer/fall of this year. I cannot see Passats getting even invoice in anticipation of the newer model, but who knows. My question is - what bottom price should we expect in the next several months? I'd love to get an '04, but they are non existent now.

    Thanks all,

    JG
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
The thing to watch out for is, although the new car will be out during the summer, VWoA has been very cagey about revealing engine choices. Some insiders are betting that they are going to withhold the TDI in our market until the '07 model year [mid-to-late calendar '06] when the final nationwide mandate of low sulfur diesel will make it possible for them to bring in the latest, most powerful, and cleanest version of the engine.

Thus, it is possible that the current supply of present-generation TDI Passats is all there will be until sometime in mid-2006, with the new car only being available with the gasoline direct-injection 2.0 turbo, and the new V6, when the car is launched this summer. In that case, the current-gen TDIs could turn into something fairly hard to get fairly soon. Now vs March? Probably no biggee....but I wouldn't wait too long if you want one of the current cars - what is on the ground now is all there will ever be.

I'm looking at a 2004 GLX 4Motion Passat w/ around 28000 miles. Car seems to be in great shape and will come w/ all records (which seems to be vital due to oil sludge probelme I'm read about). The non VW dealer was asking $19.7k. I think I can get down to $17.9, but I don't think I can get any lower than that. He's officially offered $18.5 after I offered $16.

Any thoughts on what a reasonable price for this car is? I've also posted w/ in the real world trade in value forum, but since I'm really looking to buy from a dealer I would see what kind of a deal this is. I'm possibly willing to wait till the 06's come out so I can see what kind of a deal I can get on a new or used 05, but I'm afraid that I won't find the standard +4Motion in a 1.8T. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Greg
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
I thought the GLX only came with the V6. Therefore the sludge issue would not affect you. But, I agree, that having all maintenance records are vital.
  • martinimartini Member Posts: 5
Ok, you car people. I am not a car person and am on a budget in NC. I think I want the '04 diesel Passat, automatic, fully loaded with leather and fancy wheels and sound system. (Any problems with the diesel?) The dealer quoted me 27K yesterday on a 2005 model(not including tax, doc, lic) -- thank goodness I walked away (couldn't afford that anyway) and checked out you guys! What should I pay for an '04 fully loaded diesel (assuming I can find one)??
  • jrct9454jrct9454 Member Posts: 2,363
If you can't afford $27k, what can you afford for the kind of loaded car you describe? Around here [Portland OR], local dealers are now knocking $2k off MSRP on any '05 Passat in stock, including TDIs. This is something new in our market, where diesels were harder to find discounted. How that translates to NC I have no idea, but you do need to be prepared to pay around $24k anyway, for a car with leather, and it could be as much as $25k. If that doesn't work, try a nicely discounted 4 cyl Accord EX automatic - easily bought here for $21k and change.

Ooops. I meant GLS. typo. sorry.
  • ckieltckielt Member Posts: 11
I thought I closed a good deal on a 2004 Passat GLS Sedan with ESP and Leather/Wood package, but I'm not so sure after reading this board. This is a 2004 mid-year model, so it has the same sideview mirrors as the 05 and the cold weather package is included with the leather and wood. MSRP was $27,375. I took the $500 VW loyalty money plus a $4500 discount. I also got $3K more for my trade than I should have based on research from this and other web sites - the dealer said he went heavy on my trade. Bottom line is I got the car for $8K under sticker. Was this a good deal?
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
You never told us what price you got the car for. Was the price $19,375. If that's the price, you got a great deal.
  • ckieltckielt Member Posts: 11
Yes, sorry. I paid $19,375. Again, this is counting the "extra" $3K I got for my trade plus the $5K discount for a total of $8K off. Thanks.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
You mentioned: You got $3K MORE for your trade. What was the original trade value?
  • ckieltckielt Member Posts: 11
KBB was $12K for my 2003 Passat GLS Wagon (37K miles, good condition) when I checked it this past week and it has since dropped to $11.8K. This is consistent with Edmunds and Intelliprice. Dealer gave me $15K. He's retailing 02 Passat Wagons on his lot for $16K, so I'm comfortable with what I got.
  • lin8lin8 Member Posts: 5
Hi there, I found a 2004 GLS wagon in my area (NY metro) and the initial offer from the dealer is $22100 (the only option included is ESP). Is that a good price? Any suggestions on the counter-offers? Also, is that normal for a new vehicle to have non-zero mileage (about 20 to 30)? It's my first brand new vehicle purchase so any help will be appreciated. Thanks again for your help.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Have you figured the MSRP and Invoice prices?
  • ckieltckielt Member Posts: 11
Even a new car will never have zero miles, but I wouldn't accept more than 30 or 40 miles. As for the price, you should be able to get them down another $1500; afterall the 2005 are on the lots and the 2006, competely redesigned Passat sedan will be on lots in September. Good luck.
  • lin8lin8 Member Posts: 5
Thanks for all the responses. Armed with the information from here, I got my vehicle today for $20999 ($99 doc fee is included but not taxes and reg). This might not be the lowest price but I'm still happy with it. Given that my original budget was $26000 for the 2005 model (without the leather package). I saved 5000 because of this forum. Thank you again!!!!

This is my first at purchasing a new car and I want to make it a half way decent experiance.

What wagons would you recommend. Family of 3 week like to go hiking and sking. And hit the Jersey shores in summer.

Also I heard something about oil problems with the volks and someone update me on this problem.

Any and all advise would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

Looks like there's alot of SMART realible people on this forum. Hoping someone gave give me some good advice. I received a quote from a dealer in NY on a 2005 GLX 4 Motion:
    Invoice: 30,017
    Desn charge: 75
    Phil deal adv. fee: 150
    Floor plan interest reserve: 142
    Port Prep: 25

He's then charging me $500 over which brings the total to $30,909.

The terms on the Driver Option is 3 yrs 10K miles, with $3000 down
The residual value after 3 years is 49% (seems low??)

    My monthly term is $462.

This is my first Passat, but the numbers looks kind of high??? Any help is appreciated

    Thanks all.

    sony112,
go to Edmunds new car pricing, and run the numbers with all the options. You can find out what the average purchase price is for a car like the one you're shopping for.
  • sony112sony112 Member Posts: 2
49% residual value after 3 years at 10K/year....isn't that a little steep???? I was always under the impression that German cars have better holdup value.

have been assuming in the past due to low mileage and a buyout of about $14k that I would purchase my 2003 Passat GLS 1.8T Auto/Leather/Monsoon at lease end. It is 28 months into a 36 month lease, with 20k miles, been driven gently with regular service at the dealer.

Any thoughts on whether I should buy it or give it back? I am more concerned with issues about maintenance/repair costs and reliability as opposed to the terms on the deal.

What should I look for prior to buying? What are the common problems that occur at what miles/age? Is a third party warranty a good idea/which company and type? Any suggestions, information or experience is appreciated.

Any information from anyone who has also bought off-lease from VW Credit would be appreciated, i.e. negotiation tactics or items, experience, etc...

    Hello -
Does any one know what the dealer cash is on 2005 AWD GLS? What are 2005 AWD GLS and GLX going for these days? Do folks really think AWD is that much better?

    thanks!
  • pandboypandboy Member Posts: 28
Local dealer has a 2003 passat W8 AWD in mint condition. it is priced at $21900 with 26K miles. How do you think is this a fair price?

    Hi,
My 2004 Passat is a total loss after being involved in any accident (fortunately nobody was hurt and I walked away with no broken bones....impressed with the way the car handled the crash). Anyway, my insurance valued my car (16000 miles) at 21,371 $ (after the deductible)....I am not sure if this is a the right price. KBB gives 21,555.
Should I just take it ? or maybe re-negotiate with insurance ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated...thanks.

dealer has offered me a 2005 passat wagon gls tdi with leather delivered (they will drive) to my door (300 miles from their dealership to me) for 26,472 cash. This includes all taxes, licensing, title and registration. I give them the check they give me the car. Is this an good deal or could I do better? I used the consumer reports price guide and it appears to me to be an ok deal but it seems you guys are the experts so please advise. Thanks
  • beachdriverbeachdriver Member Posts: 13
Consumer reports guide, (like most other consumer reports data), is incomplete and/or not current. Go to the Edmunds Passat Site. Although not reflected in the TMV pricing page, you will find a small blurb about $2,000 dealer marketing support through 5/2/05. This is not a consumer rebate, (which would be advertised and apparent), but is cash to the dealer to help move out the remaining 05 Passats before new model intro in August. Depending on how aggressive you and the dealer feel, you may get invoice less the whole 2k. Previous VW owners can get $500 additional. Whether the deal will get better as we approach August is questionable depending on inventories as well as the fact that the new passat will be much more expensive and there will be no TDI option for a year or two. This makes now a great time to buy the car. Like someone else said in another post, I would rather have a car from the last model run as opposed to the first model run. BTW, this is not just theory, I picked up my new GL Wagon TDI with ESP yesterday, (still wrapped in plastic with 11 factory miles, when I chose it). MSRP was $25,252 and I paid $21,196 plus $100 dealer handling, (despite my tantrum on the latter, they would not budge. Get 6 to 10 internet quotes from dealers in your area, (link from VW site or Edmunds), print out your return e-mail offers, take them to dealer with the car you want. Salesman told me 05 with TDI is already out of production so grab a remaining model quickly.
  • susansmssusansms Member Posts: 4
Just curious--which dealer was this that sold the Passat GL Wagon with ESP for $21,196? Or at least which city :~)
  • beachdriverbeachdriver Member Posts: 13
Got the last one at Russel in Baltimore, MD. They matched a quote from Ourisman in Laurel. Heritage in Owings Mills came in about $170 higher. King in Gaithersburg came in about $1,000 higher, but when the internet salesman followed up and I informed him of my purchase, he said he could have done it at $21,007. I suggest you act quickly if you want a GL...very few left and they are out of production. There are more GLS models left if you want the leather, sunroof and higher price. BTW - LOVE THE CAR!
  • pusterracingpusterracing Member Posts: 186
This sounds like a pretty good deal......what options are on the car? I picked up an '05 Passat GLS TDI sedan in February....Graphite Blue/Gray Leather, Cold Weather/Wood package, ESP.....etc. etc. for $25,700....BUT that included $500 VW loyalty...so really $26,200. MSRP was $27,934 so I was $2200 below that and about $200-300 over invoice (dealer has got to make their money too)..so $26,472 for a "drive out" price, IMHO, is a pretty good deal.

Just purchased a 2005 Passat. It is a GLS TDI, automatic with leather/wood package. Sticker price was 27,800 and I paid 24,250. The guy said he could only do that deal at an interest rate of 8.5%. I offered 24,250 cash and they took it. This was at Ray Reece VW in Portland, OR. They ran an add last week for a TDI GLS for 21,900. This was without the leather and the color choices were crap IMO. I saw the black one with leather and fell in love with it. I said how about this car at 21,900 plus the price of the leather package which brought it to 23,500. They said no way, so I headed home. The next day I got a call and we battled back and forth over the phone and finally got to the price that I paid, 24,250 (plus a full tank of gas). Let me know if you think that I got a fair deal, great deal, or got ripped off. Thanks guys, BTW this forum really helped make my buying experience much less painful than I expected it to be.
  • hi5hi5 Member Posts: 2
    Hi PR,
The car is an '05, Passat wagon GLS tdi, black with black leather, cold weather/wood, ESP. A dealer closer to home offered me the same care for $26,772 but not with leather/wood package and the price did not include taxes and licensing/dmv fees as the other did. I guess by comparison of the two it is a no brainer but I was just wondering if I could do better. If I go through with the deal they will deliver no later than this Friday 4/22 then on 4/27 we will be driving from Wisconsin to South Carolina for a little get-a-way. If not we will still be driving but in our 2000 Saab 9-3 sedan instead.

    Hi all,
First post on this great forum. I want to buy a 02-04 used Passat sometimes in the next couple of months. Should I wait for the new 06 Passat to be out hoping I'll get a better deal on the "older" model, or will it not make a difference and I might as well go ahead sooner?
    Thanks for any input!
  • bill1975bill1975 Member Posts: 19
I'm in the same boat as Laverdure. However, I don't think the new B6 Passat will affect the USED Passats, only the remaining NEW ones. Car dealers will always have older used cars, and the used lot is usually (physically) seperate from the new one. So I dont know if there is any incentive for them to reduce price on the used ones. Probably only the new ones. However I'm trying to get an idea on prices as well. I'd like a CPO 03-04 GL or GLS with under 35k miles. I'm thinking a price between $14k and $17k. It seems like a lot of dealers are asking well above blue book value. It also seems like there is a big difference between the trade in and retail blue book value. My strategy is to start a few hundred about the trade in value rather than to try and talk them down. I figure this is similar to the new car buying strategy of offering a couple hundred above invoice rather than talking down from MSRP. Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm in the market for a 2005 GLS sedan with manual transmission. Is anybody getting invoice out there these days? I would imagine with the 2006 on the way that invoice should be easy to get however, when I went to the dealer yesterday they offered me 23,995 which is only 1k off MSRP. I basically laughed at them and walked out. Thanks for any advice.
  • rstar32rstar32 Member Posts: 6
I just got a new Black 2005 Passat GLS TDI w/leather and wook package for $24,200. It's MSRP was $27,900. There are definetly good deals to be had out there right now.
  • jbaerjbaer Member Posts: 45
wow thats a great deal. By my calculations that is over 1k under invoice. Nice job !
  • rstar32rstar32 Member Posts: 6
Yeah, I felt like I got a really good deal. I went there last Friday, drove the car and offered 23,500 for it. They laughed me out of the place and so I headed home thinking I would never hear from them again. The next day I got a call and we battled back and forth over the phone and settled on 24,200. I was happy and am loving my new TDI passat. It's a thing of beauty.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
$1,000 off MSRP doesn't sound like a great deal to me. You should be able to get the GLS at invoice or lower. from what I have heard, dealers have a $2,000 incentive on '05 Passats. Good luck!
  • pusterracingpusterracing Member Posts: 186
$1,000 off MSRP doesn't sound like a great deal to me

He got it for $3700 off MSRP...$1000 below INVOICE....sounds like a great deal to me......
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Ah...I must have read it wrong. My bad!!
  • jbaerjbaer Member Posts: 45
There is apparently a $2k incentive on passat wagons and $1k incentive on passat sedans. Unfortunately these dealer incentives are only good for purchasing of the car. If you want to lease there is only $600 dealer incentive on the sedan. Not sure what it is for the wagon. These deal runs until the beginning of may. It will be interesting to see what they do after may. I am guessing the incentives will go up with the '06 passat coming soon but that is just a guess.

I just bought a 2004 Gls wagon 1.8turbo with leather, automatic with the opitonal systronic manual shifting transmission, cold weather package, sun roof and esp. Sticker price was 27,800. Car had 70 miles on it and I paid 22,350 before taxes. How did I do? I financed the car for 3 years at 3.65% through my local credit union.
