I bought an 02 wagon with 9K miles on it...the dealer and the paperwork all say it was in the VW corporate fleet and it was only put into service in July of 2004, therefore the warranty starts on that date (in-service). Paid $17,900 and the car is loaded. Has anyone heard of this situation before? Can anyone tell me why VW kept the car out of service for over two years? Thanks!

Just bought a beautiful blue graphite wagon, GLS trim, TDi, and the 17" alloys for $23,149 plus the proc. fee and tax/tags/license. Dealer drove 50 miles to get the car from another lot, drove to my credit union and picked up the check, then drove the car 100 miles to deliver to me within 24 hours of closing the deal by phone and fax.
Sticker was about $27,700. "Invoice" should be $25,357 with the wheels, so I feel like I did pretty well.
    Some Pics
Love the car more than I could imagine (put 800 miles on it in the first weekend), and several coworkers are considering getting one before they're gone. If you're thinking about it, get one now!

Hey all, I'm new here, but have been reading a lot off this forum lately. I am currently looking at a 2002 Passat GLS 1.8T 5-speed with: monsoon, sunroof, and cold weather package (dealer says). The car will be a Certified Pre-Owned VW before I buy it (just got on the lot I belive) and thus come with the usual 2 year 24000 mile warranty. It has about 34k miles on it, and is light blue. I test drove it earlier this week, and it was a very nice driving car, I like. It is just off lease, only issues are a small dent (which should be repaired easily) and the rear brake rotors need to be changed out. Dealer will do this before I take delivery of the car.

So here's the deal, I have not talked money with the dealer yet, wanted to make sure I actually was interested before doing that. I will be getting full service records and a carfax report on the car tomorrow (dealer says, so hopefully this happens). Dealer sticker price is $16,999. I have found via the edmunds site and KBB and NADA many different prices for this car.

So far have found trade-in values ranging from $10,960 to $13,775.
Have found "Dealer Price" values ranging from $15,081 to $16,325.

I am wondering what would be a good price to actually pay, seeing as I will be getting the warranty and it will be a CPO VW.

I will be (as long as carfax and service records dont suck) negotiating prices probably this Saturday (last day of the month, not sure if that means anything) for the car. I was thinking of telling the dealer that the trade in was probably close to $11,500 and that I would take the car (before tax and etc) for $12500. Then go from there with negotiations.

    What do you think?

    Thank you very much :)

What price should I pay for new leftover 2004 (new car)GLs Passat 170 hp 1.8 with leather package 5 speed manual MSRP $26,345 dealer asking 21,595. Does he get any other incentives to sell this 2004 leftover. What is the bottom line

You should be able to get that car for under 20K. You can get an 05 for that price and all the specs you listed easily.

Forget any VW between 1998 and 2002. Too many bug-related issues in those years. If you want to save your wallet (and your sanity), look at 2003 and later models.

And if that doesn't convince you - I own three VW's - a pair of 2003s and a 1997 with absolutely no problems.

To have a 25-year VW guy tell you this should be a hint and a half...
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
I would agree with the above post. Try to find a Passat in the 2003 - 2004 model yr range. If you do decide to go for the '02 Passat, i think your base starting price is appropriate. For about $2,000 above the $16,999 you could get a brand new '05 GL. I think your on the right track!!! Good luck!!!

    Thanks!
I got the carfax report and a list of all service done on the car today. Only things on the service record that aren't scheduled maint is one case of a check engine light coming on and some repair of one of the rear doors. I am going to ask for a detailed list of what exactly happened in each of those cases to make sure it wasn't something major.

All the recalls (all 2, wheel well / gas tank, and engine coil pack) were fixed at the dealer in '03.

As long as the two service items I mentioned aren't serious, it seems like this car has had a very good past. Carfax said no major things and no accidents. We shall see if the dealer wishes to part with it for what I want, otherwise I will take the advice of looking into 2003 models (or something else).

I'm a current 2004 Passat GLS TDI owner and plan on selling it this spring. I've tried listing it once on autotrader.com and only got a bunch of lowball offers(19-20K) from dealers in California. It's a great car. Blue graphite exterior, grey leatherette, upgraded to 16" VW Vancouver rims and new Michellin tires($1500), has ESP - electronic stabilization and cold weather package, 6 CD player. It has about 15,500 miles and all maintenance has been done by the dealer. I was hoping to get about $23K. Is this realistic?? Anyone recommend selling by Ebay??
    thanks :)
  • jfjfjfjf Member Posts: 4
Roxster, I don't know what the used prices are like where you are, of course you should check the blue book and nada values online, but the price you're hoping to get is what I paid for a new wagon otherwise just about identical to yours, except it has 17" alloys. No CD changer, but the PhatBox is on order for $120.
FOr sure, I doubt you'll get much if any value out of the new rims and tires.
DOn't get me wrong, I think your car's worth it! But at least as long as the VW factory-dealer incentive of $2k is out there, it may be tough to get that much outside of the 'embargo' states of Cali, NY, MA, etc.
I've bought and sold at least a dozen times on eBay (restore olf INternational Harvester vehicles as a hobby/obsession) and think it's great, but keep your eyes open.
    Best of luck with it!

I have put a deposit on an '05 Passat TDI GLS w/ Leather & Wood Package. Car cost me $26,057 inc. destination and the dealer threw in a set of rubber mats. As a side note, the dealer does not have the car so they have to locate one because they do not have the one optioned with leather. This price is before NJ tax and MV Fees. Is $26,057 a good price for the car?

    Thanks to all who answer.

P.S. Looks like the combo I want (ext. color, int color and options) is hard to find because I went to VW.com and there are only a couple in PA optioned the way I want the car.

I recently bought a new '04 Passat GLS Wagon 1.8T in Oregon for $20,670. The MSRP was $26,635. I thought this was a very good deal on this vehicle. Added bonus in Oregon is no sales tax.
The dealer also had a new '04 GL Wagon with Monsoon and cold weather package for $18,970 but I just missed this one and settled on the model with the sunroof and alloy wheels for a little bit more.

This is my first VW vehicle since a van about 20 years ago. Just recently am out of a 99 Subaru Forester and am looking for a much better ride in the Passat. In my younger days I had a '64 Bug, '67 Bug, '67 Fastback, and a '64 Van. We used to be able to fix most things on the older vehicles but I wouldn't have a clue anymore. I'm hoping the Passat holds up well as I am very impressed with it's quality so far - except for storage space in the front. Don't see many nooks and crannies to keep all of the stuff that goes along with today's lifestyle.

Is there any aftermarket makers of storage type accessories for the Passat?
  • rstar32rstar32 Member Posts: 6
tomsawyer, that is not a good deal IMO. You should be closer to 24 K than to 26 K for that car. I would keep looking unless you are locked in to it now.
  • bradfabradfa Member Posts: 4
Sooooo.... As of now, I'm not buying that Passat. Went to dealership, waited around for a little bit to talk with the sales guy I had worked with when I test drove and got the carfax, watched the Yankees game. When I got to speak with him, he brought the car around, we looked at it again, I showed him the little scratches and the one tiny dent I wanted to make sure he saw, and asked questions about the warranty. We went inside.

I said I was interested. He says, sticker price, 16999. I say, well lookie here, I found trade in value on KBB, and it says $11000, I offer $12500. I notice these numbers are very far apart. Sales dude walks over to sales manager, shows him my offer and my KBB print out, I hear sales manager laugh loudly from across the dealership. My sales dude and the sales manager come back, sales manager introduces himself and tells me that my offer is below what he paid at auction. I find this odd, why would you pay below trade in value for a passat at auction and then try to sell it for just under what a new passat costs? I ask him what he paid at auction, and if I could see the invoice, he says no way. I tell him, "well then, I assume you paid the trade in value or less." Sales manager says, "the internet doesn't sell cars, I sell cars." Which I found very funny.

Sales manager says, he can do 16999. I say, ok, how about 14000. Sales manager says, 16300. I say, ok, 14500. He says I am still not going to make him any money. He brings out NADA retail price that he printed out, it says 17--- something. I got a NADA quote from the NADA site as well, mine says 16 even. I tell sales manager "no dice" and get my papers back together. Sales dude, who is still the "good guy" asks me how high I would go, I say 15000, cause thats as high as I will go, thats all I think the car is worth from doing research. Sales manager goes back to his little table with the other managers.

I thank the sales dude, who was actually very helpful, he spent probably 3 hours working with me when I told him I was not interested in buying the car. I get up to leave. Sales manager comes back, shows me a sheet of average prices paid for cars at the last auction he went to. 1.8T GLS Passat from 2002 in stick shift went for average of 13400 at an auction on march 30, 2005. This seems interesting, he wouldn't show me this unless he paid less.

I left. We will see if they call me. But thought that some of you interested in used prices would like to know that at the end of march 1.8T GLS Passats from 2002 were going to dealers for around $13400 in the northeast.

This was at Nemer VW in Latham, NY.

PS: Sorry that my original post of this message did not meet the guidelines of the forum, I included some things that I shouldn't have. They have been removed.

(Boston) Just bought a new 04' GLS wagon (leather, auto, cold pkg, low emission) listed for 27,600. I offered 20,000... Back and forth, left dealership, and then got a call back on cell in an hr. Bought for 20,750...think I did pretty well.

Could anyone point me the right direction on a dealer in Rhode Island, Boston, or Eastern CT? Perhaps a city would do, not sure of the rules here. I can't find any of these great prices around here people are talking about. Looking for 05 GLS wagon or a used GLS TDI passat wagon. If you have a TDI to sell let me know too. Please email me at aillon@hotmail.com or post it here. Thanks for your help.

Looking for a 2003 or later model, Passat wagon, 1.8T 5 speed.

Anybody had a good deal/dealer experience in Triangle area, NC?

    Thanks ahead for any message.

AFAIK, VW does not have an overseas delivery program. Besides, most of the product comes out of Mexico or Brazil.

hey y'all, I'm about to join the Passat world and right now I'm at the final stage of negotiating with the dealer. for the trim I requested, which is 2005 Passat GLS 1.8T Fwd 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 5A) with ESP and cold weather package, MSRP is $26070, Edmunds invoice is $23914, True Market Value is $24577, and the dealer's quote is $22681 + tt&l.
can anyone please tell me if this sounds a good deal? I'm not sure what you guys were getting at. current incentive is $1500. holdback is 2%. I guess I need to verify the tt&l part as well. maybe more triques there?
    thanks a lot!
  • johndudejohndude Member Posts: 6
So does that price include the $1500 incentive and does it have leather??? :D
  • hoppihoppi Member Posts: 5
it included about $1400 of the incentive and it's not leather but leatherrett.
I was able to make it down a little more, now 22500 + tt&l and driveout 24130.
    how does that sound?

Has anyone around here bought/installed a Phatbox in a Passat sedan? I did in mine ( '02 ). I did it right, with the VW mounting brackets and followed the instructions from VW. Their pictures show it mounted flush with only the hard drive cartridge sticking out. Mine has the whole unit sticking out on the left-hand side of my trunk - obtrusive/space robbing/fragile obstacle. Any similar experiences? Did I wind up with the wrong brackets? I know there is supposed to be 3" clearance at the rear of the unit to keep stress off the D-connector/harness against the left-hand quarter panel interior. However, this thing sticks out like a sore...thumb! Thanks for any input.

7500 miles on it, ex-demo car. Is this a decent price? Other dealers in the area have offered me similar automatics for under $30k, but I want a manual or I'll just buy a Subaru Legacy GT instead. TMV says the price should be like $26k-28k though.
  • sundhario1sundhario1 Member Posts: 16
I'm interested in purchasing an automatic 05' GLS Wagon -- I've priced it out on Carsdirect which quotes $23,295. Is this consistent with what people are getting from dealers or lower/higher? I'm wondering if I can get an 05' for even cheaper as we approach the release of the new body style -- perhaps closer to 22K?
  • oliverxoliverx Member Posts: 14
I bought my 04 GLS from Carsdirect last year. It was the lowest price I could get anywhere. You should call your local dealers to compare the price.

I have followed this and other forums for some 6 months and have seen several comments on subject items.

At 5K miles I have not had to add any oil and have never gotten less than 27mpg. On a recent 750 mile jaunt the average was 28 mpg.

I have a 04 Passat with automatic and am quite happy with the car. The only comment that I might have is the initial confusion on what type of oil to use.

    :confuse: Hi there,

I've been looking for a used / certified SOLID, great car. I just moved to LA and am looking for a VW. I test drove an 02 Jetta GLS at a dealership today, which they tried to sell to me for $13995 with 24000 miles on it. I wasn't that impressed and the cloth interior seems to be one that attracts lint. I saw a 2001 Passat turbo 1.8 in a dark bluey/gray kind of color, and it has 32000k on it and is loaded. They are asking $15,900. I know the TMV for this is $13,024. What would you offer as a maximum? They only offer 2 yr / 50k warranty on certified cars. I also saw online at another dealership they are asking $14,995 for the same 2001 Passat in black before negotiation. I need some input on what people think.

Does anyone here suggest buying a Passat? Or should I just go buy a Toyota? I've just been reading that a lot of people have been having problems with 01-03 Jetta's and Passats. I can't afford brand new though. When you walk in on your own as a woman, they automatically try and screw you on a price.

If anyone has had a particularly good experience with a VW dealership in LA or just So. Cal. let me know!! (especially LA)... THANKS! :)

I have the same car, because driving usually in the city my mileage is really bad. It's about 16 - 18 mpg. When on highway, it can go about 30+ mpg.

the best i could get was $22.5 quoted. 05 gls passat 1.8t FWD auto moonroof leatherette. msrp 26,070

2 dealers said they'd beat it, but I'd have to go in. I'm waiting for june incentives to come out.

Trying to find any GL Passat Wagon, Manual or Auto, TDI or Gas. Not easy in NC.

There is one GLS Wagon, 2004, Auto, with 500 mileage on it. I offered $20K but the dealer did not even think about that.

From Carsdirect, they offered me a GL Wagon, Manual, at $20K, but they said they are still looking :surprise: for such a model. I do not think they can find any one in the coming weeks. :confuse:
  • ellyelly Member Posts: 8
Look on Autotrader.com in your area and put in a mile radius you;re willing to consider for the search. I hope that helps. :)
  • halsiehalsie Member Posts: 3
I actually just looked at one, and will be signing soon. The 2004 manual was offered at $15,477, the 2004 automatic GL was offered at $17,900 and the GLS automatic with leather option was offered for $20,900. I'm not sure that this is a good deal as it was hard to compare online as all new models were automatically 2005 and 2004 was considered new. These are brand new- 25-45 miles.

    Was yours a manual?
  • susansmssusansms Member Posts: 4
Where were these Passats? I am looking for a late model manual Passat for a good price.
  • narfinknarfink Member Posts: 2
I just got back from a dealership where the best they were willing to come up with for an '05 GLS TDI was $500 off MSRP. I offered 25k, a few hundred short of Invoice and nothing so I had to walk. If you got one for 24k consider yourself lucky.
  • lyonseelyonsee Member Posts: 11
For these who got a TDI wagon at invoice price or so, looks like really good deal. I've been looking for such a car for weeks and most of these car were sold.
I offered $23.5 K Out of door price for a base TDI wagon but still can not get one.

Either go for a Sabaru Outback, or keep fixing problems of my Galant.
  • narfinknarfink Member Posts: 2
    lyonsee,

Where are you conducting your Passat TDI wagon search? Is it a GLS?

There are a few more dealerships here in Minneapolis to crash before I have to figure out something else to buy.

2004 Passat 1.8 turbo GLS automatic with leather but no wood trim, 9k miles, ex-demo. Dealer is asking for $21k. From Carsdirect.com, similar 05 model can be purchased around $23,800. I am thinking about counter-offering $19,900. Is it reasonable? Thanks.
  • sundhario1sundhario1 Member Posts: 16
Does anyone know what the typical markdown one should get from a hail damaged car? I received a quote for a GLS Auto Wagon w/ leather MSRP 28555 and the dealer is willing to sell it for 23533+ttl. PLUS -- They're offering an addtional 2K off for some special deal. So that would drop the price to 21533+ttl.

Should the discounted price be lower than 23533? Especially if the new model is coming out in a couple/few months.

Braintree, MA only in white. Service sucks though. Be careful of what you sign there. They try to trick you into having a co-signer for the owner loyalty incentive. All you really need to do is photcopy someone's registration with the same address. I don't understand what the point was.

Now they are trying to trick me that I own the car because I signed.

don't do it. i was offered $20.9 for a 2004 GLS with leather brand new 45 miles. demos are worse than used cars as drivers slam on brakes etc. i even had a fit about 45 miles as all the others were 25 miles.

what are ppl paying for an 05 gls 1.8t auto?

i have been quoted $22.5 should i try to go lower?
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Here in Boston, I just paid $22,000 even for an 05 GLS 1.8t 5sp wagon - that basically was invoice less the $2,000 wagon incentive.

$22,500 for what you are looking at is right around invoice less the $1,500 incentive on sedans.

    Good Luck.
