Im trying to negotiate my first lease deal, and so far Im having no luck. The car is a 2006 Passat Automatic Value Edition with MSRP of $24,650, we tried to negotiate down to around invoice our goal price is $22,600. Im returning my girlfriends leased Jetta (I wasnt around when she leased it) so they said they would hook us up with the $500 loyalty discount. Anyway we are still hitting around with the numbers, but they are telling me that even if I can get it down to 22,600 they cant lease it for under $300 on a 12kmiles/year for 3 years deal with nothing down. They are telling me the residual is 59% and they are giving us a "lowest" interest rate of 1.8%. If those numbers are correct Im thinking this should definitely go under $300 with nothing down. Any help here on what I should really offer these people, are there less deals on the lower end models?
That's interesting! Why would return a brand new car within a month. Perhaps you should try to find out the reason, maybe speak to the previous owner. I am also looking to buy a new passat, in fact test drove it today. Drives like a dream; the only thing which sucks is the front passenger seat recliner (extremely hard to reach it). And I didn't even know that you could switch the transmission between automatic and manual (without clutch of course). Haven't started negotiations yet, but would be offering 25000 (with the rear curtain airbags as added option) if I do decide to buy the car. PT.
i just purchased a volkswagen passat 2006 2.0t sedan at VW dealership in lewisville texas. i signed on the financing for 3.99% for 3 years with a downpayment of $4000. i drove away with the car on 09-29-05 the finance manager told me the VW credit had not yet approved my financing and it might be monday before they do it. they didnt have the color i wanted so they told me that they had to drive it down from oklahoma city, the new car had 252 miles on it already. The finance manager was very rude to me when i called him today to see if VW credit had approved my financing. what should i do on monday if the finance manager tells me that i had not been approved for 3.99%by vw finance please advice me as i am a first time car buyer.
I did question the reason and was told the previous owner changed his mind and bought a different car.
When I took it for a test drive, the guys credit report was in the manual in the glove box.
It was dated 8/15. I questioned the sales guy about it and the fact that 2800 miles is a lot of miles to be putting on a vehicle in 1 month and again 'Why the return?' He said he did not know, but the guy bought another Passat. I told him that was even wierder.
The car drove great and was in fine shape, but due to all considered I was not going to pay more than 24000. They want 24500 so I said that would not work and they have not called back.
If they call back, and say you aren't approved, tell them you will bring the car back immediately... that you aren't doing the deal without the special financing...
Sometimes that will motivate them to find equivalent financing..... and, you will find out if they really can't get you financed at that rate, or they are trying to jack up the rate on you...
Many dealers would rather cut the price of the car to get the same payment and terms vs. having to take the car back..
Hey all, does anybody have any experience in buying from Potamkin VW in Manhattan? The salesman gave me a quote of 25,000 for a 2.0T; unfortunately can't remember the options but it had a black leatherette interior with the 60-40 split rear seats. It didn't have alloy wheels which I found unusual since the VW website showed alloy wheels as standard on the 2.0T. Thanks for your response - just moved to the US and this is the first time I'm buying a car (in any country).
Does it include destination? If it does then it is just what edmunds says about tmv ($200 lower). Do let me know if you do buy from them. I am looking to buy one (test drove one last week) and will be starting for quotes beginning monday. PT.
The VP Passat at $24,650 with 59% residual and Money Factor (interest rate) of 0.00065 (equal to 1.56%, for tier 1 credit) with a sales price of $22,600 should be $247.93 month + tax. At MF = 0.0075 (1.8%, possibly tier 2 credit), it is $251.65 + tax. Nothing down. Hope this helps.
Is there a typo in your numbers? The standard lease factor is 1.56%, and Dan had 1.8%. You would have to have a horrible credit score to get 4.8%. Even if the 4.8% is correct, if you paid full MSRP, with $2,500 down, and using the 59% residual for 36 months and 4.8%, I calculate your payment before tax of $285. I suggest you use Edmund's lease calculator and then go back to your dealer...or better yet, goto another dealer.
Hey Nvnick..thanks for the numbers. The VW guy told me last week that there is a differnt MF on the Value Edition Passat from the 2.0T standard (1.56% was the quote on the 2.0T). I believe he quoted me 3.9% which isnt awful, but its about 20 or so $$ differnce in monthly payments which matters to me. Whats your take on this, the dealer showed me this number from his VW finance book? Seems like just a sneaky way for VW credit to get more cash out of the so called "Value Edition".
Just had the worst expierence ever in a car dealership. I like to shop online so that I can make the deal on the phone and then just walk in, take a test drive and buy. No haggling, no time waisted. I was looking for a 06 Passat 2.0t with pkg#2, Dyna Audio, Rear Air Bags, and 17" wheels. When I searched on the Web for the this combination, Bernardsville VW listed 3 vehicles in inventory. I even obtained the VIN #. I contacted them via email and even spoke to salesman and saled manager on the phone. I agreed with the sales manager on the lease numbers for the deal. When I went to the dealership 2 dyas later I was greated with the famous line by the salesman "sorry but we dont have that car here, we will have to get for you". I asked to speak to the sales manager, who immediately became irritated, asking me what I was doing there. He also stated that they did not have the vehicle and that it was in transit, but he wasnt sure when it would arive. He also said that he never told me to come there and that he would prefer to do business with me over the phone. To me the sales manager was rude, cruel, and degrading. He has no idea what customer service is. He then said that he changed his mind and would not do the deal with me and to get outta there. On my drive back home I left a voice mail message for the sales manager's boss, who also happens to be the owner of the dealership. He didnt even call me back to apologize for his sales mananger behavior. All I can say is dont go there. Dont try and buy a car there. They will leave you high and dry.
I'm new to this forum stuff, so I'm sorry if I'm off track.
Here's the dilema - My pocket book is getting killed b/c I have an 03 Chevy Crew Cab Diesel fully loaded with canopy that's sporting about 13.7MPG in town = $60-$70/week. I'm a Realtor, and needless to say I drive too much! I own it free and clear.
My wife and I are thinking we need to buy a VW Passat, V6-4 motion. Found a great 03 w/ 25k miles fully loaded for $24k.
Question 1: Should I buy it? I could pay cash and sell my truck on my own..., or is that even smart? or trade the truck for what I feel is $5000 less than what I can get on my own?

Totally agree with fdyex, if they say they can't get the 3.99 then tell them you will return the car. Don't back down at all, you bought the car on the basis you'r getting 3.99 period.
A lot of people don't know this, but in some states you have up to 3 days after signing the paperwork in case you discover any discrepancy with the paperwork you can return the car.....
my sincere thanks to fdyex and yodaroni. i just got the copies of the paperwork i signed, from the finance manager. the passat is a nice car to drive, but i thought that it could have been more stable, maybe i am being too critical. i compared it to the audi A4 1.8t and i felt that the audi is more stable especially on highways. any comments?
That price seems steep for an almost 3 year old car. For about $3K+/- more you could be driving a brand new Passat. I would look at the new Passats or even Jettas for that price. Good luck!
My take on the different MF's on the value edition & 2.0t: VW overpriced the new Passat and customers are buying more VE's and less 2.0t's than they planned. To adjust supply & demand, VW is tweaking the MF to tilt towards the 2.0t...it's easier than slapping an incentive on their new car.
An Accord with heated leather seats, sunroof & automatic goes for $25,500; a Passat $27,440. The 2005 Passat drove better than the Accord, but I'm not convinced the '06 Passat does. Sure, there is the extra 34hp and extra gear in the transmission, but is that worth $2k??? And where do you find 95 octane fuel, as recommended by VW? Just my $0.02, and yes I drive a German vehicle today.
This is from VW web site under "2006 U.S. VW Passat 2.0t technical specifications: Fuel Requirement: Unleaded 95 octane (Unleaded 91 octane alternative with slight reduction in performance)"
I agree most US cars call for maximum 91 octane, so this caught me by suprise too. Could this be due to the high compression ratio? This engine is also in use in the Audi A3 & A4.
You know, I could be wrong... it happens fairly often...
But, I still think those are european octane numbers... If you look on a fuel pump, you'll see the the octane number sticker and on it, it will have R+M/2.
That is the US method for calculating octane... It is an average of the Research method and...and.. whatever M stands for...
One of the numbers is higher (the R number, I think) and one is lower, and they are averaged for the US octane number.. In Europe, they just use the higher number...
That new 2.0T engine has been out in the Audi for over six months... Pretty hard to see how that wouldn't raise a big stink, if it actually required an octane number that is basically not available in the US...
Then I was told the lease money factor for 36 months went from 0.00065 in September to 0.001214 as of Oct4. Residuals of 59% for 36k miles & 57% for 45k miles stayed the same. With tax that is an additional $25/mo.
Hi. I'd like to get a 2006 Passat 2.0T with pkg 1 or 2. I'm paying cash, but I'm not sure what kind of deal i can expect in the DC metro area. I haven't started to negotiate yet but with taxes and everything, I've been offered $26,777 for a 2.0T, and $28,545 2.0T with pkg 1. Any advice???
TOTAL MSRP: $27,440 Total Invoice: $25,357 According to Edmunds Total Invoice: $25,715 According to Dealership
Sale Price: $25,500 + TTL I financed through my personal credit union for 2.9% over 36 months. I don't mind the higher payments because of the lower interest. But if you can't afford the higher payments suggest looking into 48 months or longer term. Hope this helps everyone negotiate.
PS: Thank you soooo much whoever posted about the mistakes about the Package 1's with the with the multifunction steering wheel. You saved me an easy $2000, because I didnt want leather anyway. But I still get the leather wheel, shifter, and the cool wheel buttons all for FREE!!!! THis site helpmed me tons. I love my VDUB, and the Key is what sold me.
Also, according to the Owners Manual the car will take Premium(91) OR Regular unleaded (87), therefore, even if you put in 87, you still are covered under warranty.
:confuse: The price between base model of Passat 2.0T and value edition is around $950, while I don't know what different features cause this price difference. Any one can help me?
The value edition also does not have the nice chrome trim around the windows. Personally i think the extra $950 for the 2.0T's alloy wheels, power driver's seat, chrome trim, and the choice of interior color is worth it. The value edition only comes with black leather interior.
Took a firm stance and leaving the dealership when negotiations "failed" but they called 10 minutes later.
[I estimate the invoice at $40 less than the invoice for current cars in this configuration. This was an older '05 at an older sticker of $40 less than the current sticker.]
Did you ever buy that car? - I am looking at a new '04 GLS right now, with leatherette, auto, cold weather and esp, and the dealer offered me a sale price of $20,595 plus TTL. I wonder if this is a good price considering it is a 2004 model? I will still have the full warranty, but I am worried about the depreciation factor. I can buy the same car as an 05 model for $22,500. Which one should I buy? Does anyone else have any advice??? Thanks.
My wife and I just bought an 06 Passat. It requires only 91 octane. My brother sells them and he says a lot of the guys he works with who drive the turbos run 87 octane. I don't know what you're getting by running premium or giving up by running regular. But if your car gets 30 miles per gallon on the highway, it only costs about a half a cent more per mile to run premium. And btw, we've gotten as good as 33.4 in our new Passat on the highway and so far I've only put BP 93 octane in it.
I checked the invoice price for the 06 Passat 2.0T Auto with pacakge #1 on edmunds. The price shows $25158. But one dealer told me the invoice should be $25525. Which one is the right one? I am really confused. Is that possible different dealers have different invoice prices?
The invoice Edmunds shows is a little low, but anyone should be able to by a 2.0T at the TMV price or less. Just remember, when you drive off with that $500 or less over invoice price, yes, the dealership made money (and they WILL make more if you're trading), but the salesman (like my brother who sells VWs) will be lucky to make $100. Sure, he'll make a lot more on some, but I'm looking for a good Christmas present this year! :P
I looking to buy a Passat 2.0T. This will be my first time purchasing a car and I am looking to buy in or around the Boston area. Can someone let me know of prices that they received for this car.
Well I just bought a '06 Passat 2.0T Automatic with a package 1 for 25,369, which came out to 27,200 after T.T.& L. That's about $200 over the invoice price according to edmunds. I believe I could have gotten it down to invoice if I negotiated/haggled the salesman some more, but it was late and I wanted to get the Passat in my garage. I was also quoted a drive-out price of 25,890 for a base model 2.0T automatic (package 0) from the same dealership. BTW I bought the car in Houston, TX. Hope this helps some of you guys out .
bought my 06 Passat 2.0T AT Pkg 1 with winter package for $25,000...the car is not selling well and all those interested should be able to negotiate below invoice...

That sounds like a european requirement.... They have a different method of calculating the octane...
Most US market cars have a maximum requirement of 91 octane.. I haven't checked it, but I doubt the Passat is any different.
