Your Instrument Cluster Lights all work off of the Headlight Switch; however, the AC/Recirculate buttons light up independently when they are put into operation, and the fan is turned on...

Hi! I've been reading the posts here with great interest. I've been looking for a Passat for a while. I went to a local dealer today, and was offered 2 different cars:
1. 2001GLX 2wd Tiptronic at $300 over invoice (car on hand only, no orders). The invoice read $26699 plus best $525, northeast region $100, floor plan $92, port charge $25. Total in. $300 over - $27741.
2. Dealer demo - 2001 LX 4motion, 4000 miles, at invoice. The invoice read $26778 plus $1750 for 4motion plus best $525, northeast region $50, floor plan $92, port charge $25. Total $29220.
Questions:
How to determine "value" (deduction) of used miles on demo?
Dealer says demo is sold as new, so new car warranty applies - any disagreement?
Is 4motion worth premium in price and worse gas mileage? Is there a performance hit? Additional maintenance items?
Dealer says Northeast Region charge is for emissions controls - all pricing sites say no charge - any idea why the discrepancy, and why the charge is $100 on the 2wd and $50 on the 4motion?
I'm in the market for a 2001 Passat GLS 4Motion. I've decided (correctly I think) that I get a better deal by going for the GLS with the Luxury and Leather Package and Monsoon than for the full GLX. After trying to do my homework (through Edmunds of course) I sat down with a dealership. They quoted me $28593 for that vehicle. This seems in general to be a fair price (just a few points over invoice), or at least a fair starting point, but am I making a mistake by not waiting for the 2001.5?
I inserted the wrong price on the GLS 4Motion with the Leather and Luxury Package with the Monsoon. I said $28, 593, when in fact the quote is $29,343. I think that my analysis remains the same. Again, any thoughts would be welcome.
Hi Cary. It is true that demo cars are still technically considered new cars in the eyes of the law, as long as they were never titles as new vehicles. That doesn't change the fact that demos are really nothing more than low mileage used vehicles. Furthermore, even though the 2-year portion of this this car's warranty doesn't start until you take delivery of it, I believe that the car is still only covered for 24,000 total miles. Consequently, the 4,000 miles that it already has on it will cut into your warranty coverage. Given the above reasons, I personally feel as though the first car for $300 over invoice is a much better deal than the demo at invoice.
Really, I don't get the whole demo thing. I've never sold a demo, mainly because I can't think of a convincing argument to buy one! If I was that into saving money, I would just go get a used car. Then I get the benefit of all of the initial huge chunk of depreciation having come off of the car. Its especially bad for VWs, because there is no extra money from the factory for demos like some manufacturers. Go with the new one.
We have a brand new Passat 4motion glx(last one in stock). With the new ones en route we would probably take $650 over invoice(maybe $550)if you are interested. (we are in the northeast)
BTW, we have 5 new passats expected to hit the lot by the 3rd or 4th of Feb. Theyt start shipping 1st of feb.
FYI All true, but Article 9/page 3 in the VWOA Administration of the Warranty and Policy Program allows for and illustrates extending the 2/24 for *Demo* Units... Faxable if you like...
Ahhh. Thanks for the information, vwguild. I don't believe that is usually the case with most manufacturers. I will have to keep that in mind in the future. I still think that the new car is the better value, though.
I just wanted to let everyone know that we just got some of the 2001.5 Passats on the lot. They are amazingly classy looking. My Volvo Sales Manager got a little nervous thinking of them next to his S60's! The Silverstone Grey is undoubtedly the best color I've seen on a VW, and my wife actually may force me to buy her one of the Mojave Beige. I'm still a little iffy about that rear taillight design, and the center console seemed a little small inside, but I'm definitely giving them a big thumbs-up!

Hi. Yesterday I put a deposit on a new 2001.5 GLS 4 cyl. Passat. Our dealer here in NY is getting less than 10 models in this week. Mine should be in on Wed. Dealer was only willing to go a few hundred below MSRP....(our lease is based on $22700 price which was the lowest he would go) I was slightly disappointed but I understand that all of these models (2-4 cylinders and 8 V6s fully loaded with leather and luxury packages) would be sold out within a week or two. Most are already on hold. I would have loved to order the V6s but with all the options it would be too much to finance for me..... even leasing payments would be too high. So, we opted for the 4 cylinder base. Although I haven't seen it, I think it would be a good choice. We got it in the greystone color which everyone here says is gorgeous...... would have preferred the bluish gray color but as is always the case, you hardly ever get the color you want. They didn't have a 4 cyl. to test drive but they said I will be able to test drive one of the new 4cyls. next week. We will probably go with the "Chase Leasing Plan" which includes $1500 damage. Papers would be signed this week. I hope I will be satisfied with the 4 cyl.
just checked out vw.com/passat and was wondering---on the bottom of the screen is a flash rollover menu. If you move your mouse to the right where the "gallery" is a darkish silver car appears. To those who have seen the greystone color----is that the color? Also, I haven't even seen a 4 cyl. I assume it does not come with the wood inserts...what does it look like without the wood? We actually got 7 of them in on Thursday. And we sold 3 of them on Saturday, and 1 on Sunday so far (days not over yet!). The Mojave Beige is a super color, but I think the Silverstone is going to be the #1. Its almost midway between Anthracite and a regular Silver. The prices are around $350 more for GLS models and $600 more for GLX (I believe reflecting the Homelink system) Anyone have any thoughts on how hard it will be to sell a V6 though? I mean with only 20 HP difference, we're a little nervous about that here.

New 2001.5 Passats CAN be had for hundreds over invoice--though the dealers who post here will say anything and everything to discourage you from expecting this.
In the same vein, remember that Edmunds TMV does not represent the BEST that you can do--it represents AN AVERAGE. This means that you can do much better than TMV--and balance out those who got sucker-punched by a dealer...
All I can tell you is what I've seen, and what the dealers in my area are doing. The ones we have sold went for MSRP. All of them. Every customer I've had who shopped other dealers in the area reported dealers charging AT LEAST M.S.R.P. We just had a massive debate here about putting ADM on them. Thankfully, that idea got nixed. I've told people before that to get a deep discount on these cars, they will probably have to wait several months. I'm sure some dealers wil start discounting sooner than others, but that will change (in my opinion) once they have run out of the cars and had to pass up on customers looking for them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy to see this situation. Like I said, I get paid on volume, so the lower my boss will go, the better I would do! Has anyone reading this purchased a 2001.5 at a heavily discounted price?

I think that a poor economy will take an edge off Passat sales.

Oh, I agree. Anyone who is willing to wait will be able to get better deals, especially once the 2002 models are out. It depends on how important it is to people. Lease customers, for one might as well jump on them. The residuals are really good since they just came out, and the extra money they may pay for the car is probably totally offset by that. Two things: I see the economic slowdown, but I think a lot of this has been precipitated by market corrections of companies that were extremely inflated to begin with. My feeling is that the more solid underpinnings of the economy are still there, and will continue to help the economy grow, albeit at a slower pace. Second, I think you may be underestimating two things. First the inteligence of car buyers. They are still looking for deals, but they want the car. If no one is discounting, they realize that that is just the market condition for these cars, and they say ok. Second is the appeal of these cars. The new Passats are EXTRAORDINARY. They basically did a minor re-design, and improved the image of the car about 200%! Have you been out to see one yet?

Moreover, I doubt that a Passat lease, especially since you are implying that it will be based on MSRP, will be a reasonable deal compared to taking the time to find a solid deal and then financing. The residual *might* be better now, but since residuals are guesswork in any case, I am sure that VW and other leasing companies will tend to lower them rather than raise them, thus increasing the "depreciation."
On the economy, the fact that many companies are continuing to lay off people NOW, means that we are in the middle of something bad, not at the end of a poor economic cycle. This will continue to cause a ripple effect--those laid off will not be buying TVs and clothing, let alone brand new Passats. And their inability to purchase will affect the livelihood of others. As a result, everyone should take a hard look at their plans to buy a new car in the near future.
And finally, market conditions/schmarket conditions--see above post (and vwvortex.com) for the example of one guy who got a great deal on a 2001.5 Passat ($2000 below MSRP!) If people WAIT (a few weeks to several months--but not six months) AND shop around, they will find that these "market conditions" you refer to are not a monolithic wall of MSRP, MSRP, MSRP... Good deals can be had by smart people who are not driven by impatience.
Re Post #477: You can look at the features of the 2002 Passats under Edmunds Road Tests, new vehicles tested. I could not detect any changes from the 2001.5.

Speaking of guesswork, all of this economic forecasting is giving me a headache. All I meant was that my gut instinct is that the economy is actually pretty healthy now. A tree can look really full and healthy, but need pruning badly. After pruning, it may look a little ragged, but you're down to all good wood!
I got the car in Columbus, OH at Midwestern Auto Group (MAG) and it included the destination price of $525. I also received a good offer from Hatfield for the GLS v6 w/luxury,cold,monsoon,and leather for $27K also including destination. If you're anywhere in the area, MAG was a much better sales experience than Hatfield.
I just purchased a 2001.5 GLX at Rusty Wallace VW in Dallas. I shopped all the VW dealers. Call Matias Hodges at 214/349-5559. He is willing to work with you. Some of the others dealers would not budge. The buying experience was pleasant. I'm picking the car up this afternoon. I suggest you give him a call.

Passat GLS, 4cylinder, auto, power sunroof, 15" alloy wheels, anti-theft wheel locks and a rear sunshade (luxury package PJ6), and Monsoon sound system for $22,000 (~$250 below invoice). Someone above said s/he got the cold weather package included with that same price. I am thinking about asking for the cold weather package (of course) and a CD player for $22,000. Fair price? Assuming they get $1000 rebate and 2% holdback, this equates to roughly a ~$900 profit.
I have been set on buying a 2001 GLS V6 passat. However, I found a deal - A 2000 GLX passat fully loaded, including a bra, a spoiler and a 6 CD changer. This car only has 3800 miles on it and is being priced at 24,400. Should I go for it? SHould I hold out for the 2001.5 passat - it is not being offered at any dealerships here in Indianapolis. If I've got my calculations right (price incr on 2001.5 GLS only $300 more than 2001; no increase on any options) , that's about $800 above invoice (or about $1300 below MSRP). For a brand new 2001.5, I think that's a pretty good/fair deal. I'm fortunate to be in the New York Metro area (Central/Northern New Jersy actually) where there's quite a few VW dealers to chose from. I visited three: the 1st would only go $575 below MSRP, the other two were dealing. The sale of these cars did seem to be going pretty well, but the supply coming into the dealers seemed pretty good as well (I saw all the new Passat colors between the 3 dealers).
In response to a query by JANUS010(post #475)who is looking for a 2001.5 4 motion in Northern NJ area, have you checked out Three County VW in Lyndhurst, NJ? Check out their website via www.vw.com (Go to "Find Dealers"). Internet Sales Mngr is Mike Washington and he's pricing via internet sales at 3.85% above invoice. I've got his current inventory list for the 2001.5s and he's got one 4 motion in the new Fresco Green now on the lot. I didn't end up going with them as I got a slightly better deal at dealer closer to home for me.
Based upon my experience, I would say that if you happen to be in an area with a good selection of VW dealers, you will NOT have to pay MSRP or thereabouts.
I can't wait to get my hands on the car; they drive and look great!! (I test drove 3 other 2001.5 4 cyl automatics in my search)

I can think of several that often have demo money, up to $3,000 per car.
VOlvo, for example, has a small subsidy on service loaners, but nothing on Demos. Sometimes Ford has a small incentive as well.
Still, I think it's a better buy to go used.

I am in negotiations right now and the price that I got for this exact car is $22,900. So, of course I am going to try and talk them down to $22,000.

My question is whether anyone knows how to find actual dealer stock here in CA? I have been all over the net and have had some dealers send me pictures but I am trying to find TRUE answers to this question.

I just learned it when I shopped around that VW dealer received $1000 rebate for the 2001 models. I hope that is the difference you are looking at.

Passat GLS, 4cylinder, auto, power sunroof, 15" alloy wheels, anti-theft wheel locks and a rear sunshade (luxury package PJ6), and Monsoon sound system for $22,000 (~$250 below invoice). Someone above said s/he got the cold weather package included with that same price. I am thinking about asking for the cold weather package (of course) and a CD player for $22,000. Fair price? Assuming they get $1000 rebate and 2% holdback, this equates to roughly a ~$900 profit.
2001.5 GLS, 4 Cyl, Auto Trans, Lux Pkg, Monsoon Sound, Silverstone Grey, Total Price (excluding sales tax, & DMV fees = $23900.
If I've got my calculations right (price incr on 2001.5 GLS only $300 more than 2001; no increase on any options) , that's about $800 above invoice (or about $1300 below MSRP). For a brand new 2001.5, I think that's a pretty good/fair deal. I'm fortunate to be in the New York Metro area (Central/Northern New Jersy actually) where there's quite a few VW dealers to chose from. I visited three: the 1st would only go $575 below MSRP, the other two were dealing. The sale of these cars did seem to be going pretty well, but the supply coming into the dealers seemed pretty good as well (I saw all the new Passat colors between the 3 dealers).
In response to a query by JANUS010(post #475)who is looking for a 2001.5 4 motion in Northern NJ area, have you checked out Three County VW in Lyndhurst, NJ? Check out their website via www.vw.com (Go to "Find Dealers"). Internet Sales Mngr is Mike Washington and he's pricing via internet sales at 3.85% above invoice. I've got his current inventory list for the 2001.5s and he's got one 4 motion in the new Fresco Green now on the lot. I didn't end up going with them as I got a slightly better deal at dealer closer to home for me.
Based upon my experience, I would say that if you happen to be in an area with a good selection of VW dealers, you will NOT have to pay MSRP or thereabouts.
I can't wait to get my hands on the car; they drive and look great!! (I test drove 3 other 2001.5 4 cyl automatics in my search)
