I am looking to trade my 2001 Hyundai (I hear the snickering already). The price on the new car (2004 Hyundai Sonata Sedan) is good. The dealer is offering $4639 on my trade. Do you think that is about the best I can expect? Based on Kelley Blue Book, I was hoping for between $5500 and $7000. After reading all the Hyundai posts, I am thinking that my hopes were irrationally high.
2001 Hyundai Sonata GLS, 42,500 miles, V6 (170 HP), Slate Grey, 5-speed Manual, AC, PS, PW, PDL, Tilt Wheel, Cruise, AM/FM Stereo CD (Single), Dual Front Airbags, Front Side Airbags, Alloy Wheels, Keyless Remote (no alarm).
Not sure if this is important - Power Assisted Rack & Pinion Steering, Fully Independent Suspension, Front & Rear Stabilizer Bars, Front & Rear Disc Brakes (not ABS).
The body is in good shape (a few very minor dings). No accidents and all the required maintenance has been performed on time. It is about time to replace the tires and brake pads (normal wear and tear). The interior is in good shape (no holes or wear). Based on Kelley's condition guide, I'd place the condition at GOOD (except for the tires and brake pads).
I'm thinking maybe I should keep the 2001 for another 30 months (when it will be paid off).

I know, there's always the danger of inflating an already, uh, robust ego.
But here goes:
Question: "Subaru Legacy Wagon 1998 5sp AWD ABS rack, very clean, well maint. 1 owner 79k mi $6675."
Answer: "Sounds like a $4,5ish vehicle auction side, time ya get it home probably have close to $5,0 in it .. $6,7 is a Very fair asking price if it's a nice one .. "
Okay, I give the guy a call, I go to check it out. It's silver, it's pretty clean, and I'm under the car looking for warts. Find only two; oil seepage from the frt engine cover, not a big deal; and a lightly mangled pinch weld under the driver's door... Apparently, my new friend hopped over a parking curb and rested the frame on the far side... not nice, not the end of the world. "Oh yeah, when they appraised it at the Toyota place, the manager asked me about it". I told him, lemme guess, $4,700? He says, $4,5 actually.
Score one more for Terry.
Didn't buy it, though, at least not yet. There is a growl that really kicks in after approx. 2000 rpm that is really suspicious.. I've driven the 2.2l automatic before and it didn't do that.. it's a really pronounced vibration, feels like 1/2 crankshaft speed, vibrates the shifter pretty hard, I don't think it's normal but I dunno for sure. I posted a question over on the Legacy forum but haven't heard yet. It's a nice car otherwise, maintained, new t-belt. But I'm thinking either it's got problems, or if THAT noise is normal, I don't want a Subie...pretty rowdy.
Anyway, thanks for the help, if I do get it, I'll post for how much. -Mathias
But, I didn't go to a car lot, I simply called our salesman at Cal Worthington......actually I called him for another reason......we haven't recieved the warranty papers on the Dodge yet. He just said it could take up to 8 weeks, but we could use it now if needed.
Then I mentioned about the Explorer, he wasn't pushy, said to call him Monday and he'd put a couple things together and let me think about it. Said I could go with it or keep the Explorer and wait. I figure if I go with it I will get trade in what that thing is worth retail (has 56k on it now, will have about 90k on it in a year) in a year (and have the hassle of selling the darn thing myself). I dunno what to do, I'm so close to owning it, but its trying to fall apart. I love my Explorer, but hate repair bills with a passion.
30-40k/year in Ak one YOUR car alone? Can you explain to me, in words that I can understand, why you're driving a Ford???
I can't think of anyone more in need of a TOYOTA than you. 4Runner, Tundra, anything trucky so it doesn't get beat up too badly; maybe even a DoubleCab Tacoma... Buy it new, get the extended warranty, and stretch the loan as long as you have to... I don't think it could be any more expensive than the adventures you're engaged in now. With that kind of driving, you're always going to have those $2-3k/year repair bills on top of having payments... now wonder it's killing you.
-Mathias (who's never afraid to spend other people's money)
Unfortunatly I can't afford it ($32,500 new for a 4Runner vs $22,500 for a new Explorer after rebates). I had that Corolla for a little while, then with all that happened last summer it got sold. I bought the Explorer (should have bought a 4Runner or something else) because it was low miles and cheap, figured it would last me and the kids a few years in Texas (since I knew I wouldn't be driving nearly as much). Well, you see where things went there.
Anyway, so here I am, with an Explorer that will be quickly approaching the 100k mark in the next 18 months, however, it will be paid off in 11 months.
We make several trips to Anchorage in a year (probably 12 or so at 700 miles round trip each) and then go to Fairbanks usually once, sometimes twice a week at 200 miles round trip. Then there's the driving for ice cream (that's 60 miles round trip) or to rent a movie. It adds up.
I was also making a 42 mile per day trek to the bus stop (10.5 miles one way x 4), but that's since stopped, we switched schools with the kids.
Believe me, if I thought a Toyota Matrix would work I'd be on the bandwagon, but I don't think 160 lbs of dog (2 dogs) would fit in the back.
I'm guessing I will be driving this Explorer until it dies, just hope it doesn't hurt the hip national bank too bad when it breaks.
The dogs do stay home now, but it would be nice to not have to walk past my retriever and his forelorn expression. He always wants to go and when I had my Jeep (cloth seats) he got to go everywhere.
An SUV is nice for us in more ways than one, I do take my vehicle off road some, mainly to get to the logging sites with my husband. I've looked for a used 4Runner, the only ones I can find have 90k plus on them which seems pointless to me to trade my Explorer on that.
I do agree that its sound advise and I'm taking it into consideration. However, to afford a 4Runner I would have to wait until next fall. Up here used ones go for almost as much as the new ones. They don't drop below the $20k mark until they have well over 80k on them. I've seen 250k 4Runners bring $10k up here, its nuts.
I know my Explorer will (already is) turn into a money pit. I'm guessing that in the next 40k it will need a transmission (its got a fussy 3rd), work on the fuel system (its hard starting, acts like lack of fuel) and who knows what other little things will pop up.
I'd rather just bang my head against the wall sometimes. Anyway, enough on this whole subject, maybe I'll get lucky and someone will clobber my Explorer in a parking lot and total it!!
Better yet - there's this place called civilization where long trips and freezing cold and mosquito airways are not an issue!! Your hubby can cut down trees there if he'd like - they may be in somebody's backyard so he'll be working nights.
.... With all the Mooses, deers, skunks, bears and chirping flocks of birds that you have a tendency to hit, maybe a nice used military style Hummer will do .l.o.l....
Are too much!! We are hoping to move closer to Anchorage in 2 years (waiting for a big loan to be paid off). That's another reason that buying a new truck now would be better, could have it darn near paid off by then. Ah well, whatever happens happens.
Terry.....Our V10 is big enough, I refuse to drive it, really think I would drive a Hummer??
BTW, we don't have skunks and all the deer are down south, but dang we do have to dodge those darn 4 legged coat racks that pop up in the middle of the highway.
Oh, so far offers are hanging in the $7500 range for the Explorer......me not happy about that!!
I think what Mathias was saying has some merit to it... I believe I read somewhere you had mentioned you were pushing +$500 on payments now for the Explorer you currently own... I have a sneaking feeling you can get yourself into a new 4Runner/Pathfinder, something of that nature, for a similar payment... you may have to push the payments out 7 yrs, but with an extended warranty (hell, I'd probably even gamble and not worry about a warranty with a Toyota), your cost of ownership will be much less than your current payment plus the $200/300 per month in maintenance/repair bills on your current Explorer.
Personally, I think if your looking at purchasing another used Explorer or Durango, your going to be right back in the same boat in another year or two..... If you want to go used, I would STRONGLY recommend looking toward TOYOTA.
The main reason I'm paying so much on my Explorer is so I can pay it off in 11 more months. Of course now that we bought that Ram I have to watch $$$ a little more carefully. I don't want $500+/mo payments, I'm cool with $400 or so. The *real* payment on my Explorer is $260/mo. It will still be paid off this time next year if I keep it.
Right now its needs are brakes/rotors (all 4 are warped and grooved), the blend door fixed (will try to do that ourselves next weekend), and whatever it is in the fuel system that's causing trouble. If I keep it I'll fix everything that's currently wrong with it and plan on driving it for another 100k or so (hopefully).
I'd love to buy a used 4Runner (I do believe they run forever), however, after looking today I highly doubt I could find one that was decent for less than I would pay for a new Explorer. IF I buy something else you can bet it will have a 100k factory backed ESC.
Yes, I do agree Mathias advise is, as always, very sound.
I am looking to trade my 2001 Hyundai (I hear the snickering already) in New Hampshire.

I'm thinking maybe I should keep the 2001 for another 30 months (when it will be paid off).
Keeping this car is the best thing you could do. If you've got 30 months left on the loan, it's unlikely that you've got positive equity in this car (especially since, well, it's a Hyundai, and they've got the resale value of beer.) Rolling over negative equity onto a brand new Hyundai would really be a financially disastrous move. I say, if there's nothing wrong with this one, you'd best keep it until it's paid off.
Hi - saw in a website article that this is a good place to ask for a real trade-in value on my 2001 Audi AllRoad w/ 43,100 miles. It's got most of the bells and whistles including roof rack, moon/sun roof, CD player, etc. I've checked NADA, Kelly, et al - but get wayyy diff. quotes from new car dealers. Anyone got a suggestion and a #???
........ The miles are kinda almost maybe ok, 4dr GLS, it's a handshaker, it's a V6, good color .. we probably need some tires and some stoppers ..
*$4639 on my trade*, where the heck did they come up with that number, couldn't they round it off to $4640 or $4650 ... ? ... Trade side, in and around the high $5's, maybe the low low low low low low $6's ....... Hyundai's may not be my favorite mode of transportation, but $4,6 is way low for a Sonata GLS .. has it been hit, repainted, food wars in the interior, you buried you aunt in the trunk ...?
'98 Volvo V70 GLT (light pressure turbo...auto, of course.) 61,000 miles, red (actual red, not that "coral red" that's really more pink...ugh) over flawless tan leather. Newish tires, all the usual GLT goodies plus the cold weather pack. Pretty much perfect, except that for some reason the wood trim is beginning to delaminate on the center console and glove box. Don't know if the t-belt has been changed or not. Here's the kicker: it's been sitting on the local Chevy dealer's lot since they sold their Volvo franchise nearly two years ago. They're asking $14,900. What's a realistic price for this bad boy?
My neighbor is looking to move his truck. Zip code 03060. It is a two-tone (I would say teal green as the major color and a gray on the bottom). It is a regular cab stepside short-bed 4x4, 5.7L V-8, good all terrain tires, nice aftermarket rims, chrome bumper, chrome rollbar, diamond plate on the tailgate and bed rails. Interior is gray, it is clean. Mileage is 122k, and the truck has power everything. The truck needs a few items (windshield, new mufflers and new tailpipes) but he is taking care of them before selling so it will be a very clean vehicle going into the market. It was in an accident a front end accident about a year ago, and got repainted completely at that time. The shop did a very good job with the repair. Your average person wouldn't pick up on it. What are these doing on the market in terms of a private party sale and trade-in? It's in excellent shape, the color is not my thing but it was popular at that time.
Before Terry sees this let me help ya out. Zip code 03060 = Nashua NH
Terry, et. al., needs to know where the car is but he does not have every zip memorized. It seems like a zip would be helpful but it just makes for more work for him.
We need to know retail/trade values for our two cars in CIncinnati:
98 Ford Ranger XLT (keyless entry, alarm, power windows/locks, CD player etc.) 4WD off-road edition extended cab flared bed, red, 5 speed, 85K miles. Aftermarket soft tonneau and hitch. Problems: rear quarter panel paint is dull on one side, door ajar light stays on once in a while even though the door is shut. Seat cloth somewhat worn. Otherwise in good condition, and is getting new tires, tuneup and whatever brake work is needed shortly.
2001 New Beetle GLS, silver, moonroof, cold weather package, Monsoon sound option, cloth seats, 5 speed, 35K miles, very clean. Problem: was dinged by a snowplow while parked, which broke the driver's side mirror, dented the rocker panel, and scraped the driver's door. Repair done by VW dealer. It looks quite good to me; I don't even notice when waxing it, but I'm no expert.
We can't pay off both loans, but we might be able to pay off one. So we're wondering which one we're less upside down on. Currently we owe 8500 on the Ranger and 12000 on the Beetle. Thanks!

$17,500 is ridiculous, true, but don't expect much more than $25K (wholesale). Your best bet is autotrader or ebay and get some Northern exposure.

Seriously, Mathias is giving you sound advise. Most domestics turn into money pits around the 100K mark...I know...some will argue.
A Toyota, if maintained can easilly do 250K or more. I would MUCH rather take a chance on a used 4Runner than a new Explorer.
Just my thoughts...
:-)
Best of luck.

Personally, I think if your looking at purchasing another used Explorer or Durango, your going to be right back in the same boat in another year or two..... If you want to go used, I would STRONGLY recommend looking toward TOYOTA.
Hope you had a good Holidays!
2001 Hyundai Sonata GLS, 4-dr Sedan, 42,500 miles, V6 (170 HP), Slate Grey, 5-speed Manual, AC, PS, PW, PDL, Tilt Wheel, Cruise, AM/FM Stereo CD (Single), Dual Front Airbags, Front Side Airbags, Alloy Wheels, Keyless Remote (no alarm).
Thanks!
Rob

Got any 89-93 Mustang GT or LX !!5-SPEED !! coupes or convertibles down there?

Thanks.
Thanks

That's NE or Colorado car all day long.
Also, I'll do the detective work for you:
"regular cab stepside short-bed"
They only make a step side in the 1500 series.
I guess that msg just got deleted :-)
Thanks bud. And I was on a roll there for a moment... -m
