What's the trade value of 1999 Ford Exped. Eddie Bauer 4x4, 5.4L V8, 6 disc CD, dual zone climate, tow package, load leveling suspension, 50k miles? Leather immaculate, carpet normal wear and tear, 2 small body dings, no accidents, good rubber (all 4 < 16 months old)
I posted a while back about buying our 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser at the end of our lease. Purchase option at end of lease is 31,342; car is dark green, excellent condition, 51,500 miles with rear A/C and third seat package. No accidents. We are located in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Trying to follow Terry's good advice, I waited until today (about 5 weeks before lease end) to call Toyota Financial Services (our lessor) and -- try -- to make them an offer to buy the car in the 28-29K range. I was very polite, but the representative I spoke with simply stated that Toyota would not negotiate off that price. I asked -- politely -- whether there was anyone else I could speak to because I was willing to give them more than what they would likely get at auction (I didn't give them a specific price). She simply stated -rather that they did not ever negotiate off the price in the lease, on the rationale that "If it was worth more, they would still be obligated to sell it to me at the set price." I politely asked the question one more time -- "is there anyone else I could speak to?" and got the same response.
Obviously, that has nothing to do with the issue, but now I'm wondering what I can do. Did I do anything wrong? Should I call back, or simply be resigned to my fate and decide to either simply pay up at the stated price or return the car?
...... It's a 00 LC and we have about 52k rolling around .. right now their doing around that $27ish range in your area ..
Residual is $31 and some change .. $28/$29 is fair, even $30,0 on a push ..
Not everyone you speak with will have that Christmas spirit .l.o.l. and there's never a guarantee they will come down, some will, some don't ..
I just rolled around on 5 different phone calls for a 03 XC90, but it's a done deal now .. all you can do is be patient, get with Dist Mgr/Reg Mgr and see what happens, it might take calls till the last 5 days, or in your situation maybe go to a month to month lease and kinda let the "dust" settle and buy it in Feb ..
Isell: they all do it, it's good business sense, all he has to do is find the right person with an auction report and some common sense .....

1995 Lincoln Continental. 74K miles, loaded with everything. It looks 8 years old but I oddly still get compliments that it looks newer. It's in Roanoke Va.
Isellhondas -- fair point. I dont blame Toyota F.S. either ... its their car, and they are obviously willing to live up to the contract. The way I was trying to -- rationally -- explain the situation to the representative was that I would pay more than they could get at auction, but that the residual was more than I am willing to pay. Maybe they have just decided that its not worth the trouble to have a bunch of phone reps. trained in negotiations about residual values. Or, maybe I just spoke to hard headed one. Or maybe they just make it really hard to find, or some combination of all of the above. Terry -- thanks -- your numbers are exactly where I thought they would be. I will give Toyota FS another call tommorrow and try to find some "Christmas spirit." I will report back.
Any estimates from the experts on the trade in value on the follwing car would be greatly appreciated:
96 Chevy Monte Carlo 135K Black - good paint one fade. Runs good (engine / tranny) - looks good (for 7 yrs) Good interior - loaded toys newish skins no accidents couple of quirks (passenger electric lock, engine light in the dash been on for a year, funky fuel reading)
Dealer trade in value? ($1K, $10, or will they make me pay to take it) street value?
Unless you do not want the hassle of having the little problems fixed and the time to sell it yourself, you will lose big time trying to trade it as it sits.
Retail side, deep in rubber, those little things fixed, a good detail, everything works, maintenance up to date and all service records on the seat, asking $3900 and first offer $3K'ish takes it home. These are still kind of popular in our hickabilly area, but dead flat in other areas, you should have posted your location.
Trade side as she sits. Maybe $1500ish. Probably lower if it does not show well. We occasionally pick those up as low as $1K with your kind of miles and relatively unknown mechanical problems.
I have a 1996 Toyota Camry DX. It's 4 cylinder automatic. Black exterior, gray cloth interior. I'm the third owner. 98K miles. Air and cassette. I'm in northwest Atlanta. How much in a trade? How much if I sold it myself?
I've got a 1999 Olds Alero sedan, silver, v6 (GL model). Neutral cloth interior color (willow i think they call it). I've upgraded the head unit w/ a touch screen single CD player from panasonic (does that affect the value). First owner. Everything runs pretty well. One part of the hood has some clearcoat damage about 1"x.5" spot. No other damage to the paint. Very glossy. Wondering what the value of this would be. Looking to trade it in soon. I live in Orange County.
I don't have alot of info on this puppy cause I haven't seen it yet, but...

...... Yeow, I'm going blind with all that printer stuff ...
The one with 3,400 miles is priced right .. the dealer probably has $34/$35ish in it, so at $37ish he not trying to kill anyone .. the 18ker, the miles are waaay tall and they probably have $30ish in it .. $35,9 ..? .. maybe $32,9 ...
The car itself runs good - could use a tune-up and oil change. It has 107,000 miles and new tires. The exterior is okay, EXCEPT, the front bumper and passenger fender have been replaced due to a deer collision, and are primer black (the car is maroon). The interior has some problems, too. There is not CD player/radio due to an idiot ex-boyfriend hitting it with his fist and there's a great big cigarette burn on the driver's seat.
My question....should I go ahead and fix this stuff BEFORE I trade it in or will it really make a difference to the dealer?
Please answer quickly - I might try to trade it in the week after Christmas which is supposed ti be a really good time to buy a car.
So if I decide to go down the private sale road, where is the best place to advertise? Park it at the mall with a sign? autotrader? Local paper? All of the above?
We're thinking about getting the wife a new car. Her current car is a 1993 Ford Escort Wagon with just a shade over 29,000 miles. It is immaculate, never wrecked, you might find one or two small paint chips if you look close. It is fairly basic..just am/fm radio, A/C, roof rack, and rear window wiper. It is white. It is all original, except for the tires..I put new ones on last year because the original ones were starting to weather check on the sidewalls. She uses is to run to the local stores, and we take it to the casino's once a month (50 miles) to blow the water out of the exhaust. It is mechanically perfect, gets 25MPG city, and we have seen as high as 34MPG on the highway without running the A/C. We are in central Missouri..any ideas what its worth???
They were in the 740/760 line.. In fact, that is how the 760 designation came about. But, they were so crappy, eventually they made the 760 model just the higher trim line version of the 740. Hence, the 760 turbo.. which is a 4-cyl turbo. As Isell noted, they had a very poor reputation.
..... Well, it's not like their selling 5,000 of these a month .l.o.l.
But there has been more than I expected for this time of the year .. new ones, MSO's have been doing "around" $310/$315ish .. the preowners with miles in the 3/4/5k range seem to be tilting around that $285/$290ish ish ish ish range ... wow, what a stocking stuffer.

Trade v. retail? I'm getting killed on trade value so far. Thanks Terry.
Let's see .. it's one of those funny German cars, where all the wheels run at the same time ... color is good for the area, miles are okish, it's 2.7 A6 (not an Wagon, right..? ~ pay attention, I'm going to ask questions later.!) .. 4dr, bun warmers, Bozo sound, blinders, side crushers ..
Service better be 110%, no I ran my car through the $2.00 Swirlo'matic car wash 50 times, deep sneakers .. trade side depending on the dealer, in and around that $20ish zipcode, "maybe" could sneak up towards $21ish if it's a baby doll and needs -0- ... down the sacred path to Retailville, $24,9 "asking" and say See Ya when one of those cute little Buckeye cheerleaders say $22,9/$24,0 ...
May the Force be with you and Don't forget to let me know..!
I changed the oil and filter every spring and fall...used Pennzoil 10W/30 and Fram. I changed the transmission fluid and filter when the car was about 5 years old..12K miles. The car was always garaged, and I don't think it ever saw snow. There is no rust or corrosion anywhere, and even the exhaust is rock solid. I pulled the wheels and checked the brakes about a year ago, and they have at least 90% of the pads and lining left. The wife kind of likes the new 2004 Chevy Malibu, and we took the car to the local Chevy dealer to shop it. At first the salesman made us the standard (not worth squat) offer, then the sales manager saw the car, and he had a mechanic put it on the rack. After about 20 minutes of inspection, he came back with an offer of $3000 against a loaded Malibu. One of our neighbors who knows how we've treated the car said he will spring for $3250 anytime we want to sell it. After driving one of the new Malibu's for about a half hour, I think I'll give the neighbor a call.
If you have $3250 cash offer that is real, you are getting about all the money in it. Any dealer would be hard pressed even with the low miles to get much more than $3500 due to its age and the fact that it is a 93 Escort Wagon that is pretty bare bones.
The fact that you did the fluid maintenance and did drive it at least once a month to keep the exhaust dry, a private owner sale will net you more than ACV on trade easily. Plus the miles will make it a very easy sell. Unless you replaced the belts (including timing belt) once they are likely on the edge of dry rot and the new owner should look at them periodically to replace them before they break and leave them on the side of the road.
$3000 trade in? I am pretty certain the dealer was giving you an overallowance and actually had around $1000 more room to come down on the Malibu from the price they were showing you.

What fate? You knew what the residual was at lease inception. Residuals aren't supposted to be negotiable.
I think Toyota would be opening a big can of worms if they started negotiations on "set in stone" residuals.
It sounds like, to me, that you like the car and want to keep is but don't like the residual.
On the other hand, suppose the residual was too low and Toyota refused to sell you the car for that and wanted to negotiate a higher price?
I can't really blame Toyota for their stance on this.
Residual is $31 and some change .. $28/$29 is fair, even $30,0 on a push ..

My apologies if this is off topic.
De Loreans used them too and they were total junk.
Perhaps the very worst V-6 engine ever produced. They would eat camshafts every 40,000 miles and were known for VERY short lives.
