..... They might have marched up to $17,5 and some change and given you a $1,500 discount and showed it in overallowance, it's January and I'm sure they are lookin' for some business ......... :)

Forget the SHO and quit drooling!

The only good thing about these is the engine. They are mechanical nightmares otherwise!

"they ruined them when they put that dang V8/Auto in there, yuck"
i guess we're just destined to butt heads.

had an 89(5 speed), 92(auto), wife had 96(v8-auto).
after the 92, i said that was enough for me.
at least in the 89, i knew how fast i was going.
nicknamed the 92 'heroin - as in addicting'. never had anything major go wrong with it(only 30k), but did have some problems. traded it in 2 years later on an explorer.
wife drove the '96 up to 77k miles. i never liked how the tranny shifted, the suspension was kind of noisy, but overall a pretty good car. got us home one road trip when the 18 wheelers were stopped at a state border. guess we were too road weary to figure out what that meant, at the time. always sounded great, and since it didn't have a straight line on it; it never got boring to look at. i still see it driving around once in a while.
since my wife is leasing her current car, we don't have a trade in.

    1. Buy your old Explorer.
    2. Buy aforementioned SHO.
    3. Spend from now until breakup season figuring out how to become the only owner of a SHO-engined Explorer in Alaska. If nothing else, it'll keep you off the car lots. :-)
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
    Killing me.......LOL.

Actually if I was to buy my old Explorer I would forgo the aforementioned SHO and go straight for an SVT Mustang and steal the engine and whatever else I needed. THEN I would have the ONLY SVT Cobra Explorer in Alaska.

I promise I'm not going to the car lots, LOL, well, only the Ford dealer for service on the Explorer and the Ram (Ford ESC). I'm too busy keeping hubby out of the ditch, the kids from getting lost in all this snow, and trying to figure out how to buy 6 winter tires at $165/each.

The sequoia is a 2001 SR5 and is 2wd. It has leather,50k, new rubber, beige exterior, but no slider. They are asking 23,400 and are not moving. Is that a fair price?

As for the expedition, I might send it down retail road. How much do you think I should ask for?

    Thanks again.
  • ben95mben95m Member Posts: 10
..that the sequoia is at a Chevrolet Dealer.

    Thanks.

    Thanks, Terry.
right, the mileage should be 25K...
The owner is asking for 22K for the car. Most of private sales I saw were asking 26, 27k for 01' 325i with teen miles. I am having really a hard time finding any decent deals here...

    Regards,

... ** 'heroin - as in addicting'.** ..... hmm, good name for a boat ..

                          Terry :))
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... If you look at the retail books and use their numbers, then the numbers get a little distorted ...

Most of these folks have been to dealers and the dealer hit them at $17, maybe $18 with the miles in the teens, then they call their bank, credit union and/or go to internet sites and pick the highest figure, it's only human and Always keep in mind, those are *asking* figures ...

Even here, folks will post with a great description, I give them a number and then I don't "see" back from them for 2/3 months, then there's an email or a post here on the "trial and tribulations" of asking too much $$ .l.o.l. .. I guess the point is, look for the vehicles that have been up for sale for awhile and shop those first .. I'm paying $20ish for the super nice, ultra clean "00" 328i's miles in the teens and happy to see $24ish on the retail side, the 01's for $26ish is fair, depending on the options and history, but 99's for that kind of money ..? .. maybe in some very odd and strange area's of California and Mars.

                           Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ If it's clean, a great history, deep rubber (3rd seat.?) .. then $23,4 is cheap for a Sequoia, even a 2wd ~ I would wanna be there, like yesterday ..!

I still don't get the $8 grand part for the Expedition ... down Retail Rd after a super detail and a great ad, $13,9 *asking* and nod your head at the first $12,5/$13,5 ...

Good luck and let me know what happens ...

                         Terry ;-)

...... Hold on here for a moment, let me take a big gulp of Jack Daniels and a few meds, just so I can understand this better ...

02 Honda 4 dr Accord EX (stop me at anytime) V6, right ...? .. 26kish, right.? we have some leather, slider, wheels, it's a 4 banger plus two more cylinders, right.? ... it's in ok, to ho-hum shape and it maybe looks good, right ..? .... and trade you for a $12,000 *difference*, right.? .. hmm, let me ponder this .. so they are "showing" you $16 for yours, right...? ... not a superb, great super duper deal, but almost kinda of fair, maybe $11ish would be a little better ~ hey, you don't ask, you don't get ....

Well I was out and about a bit yesterday prowling around for a pickup. I went to the local Ford dealer when I saw a 1990 F150 4x4 "custom". It HAD brown paint. I say had b/c there was little of it left on the hood. It was a regular cab, longbed, automatic with about 90XXX miles (but looked more like 190,000 LOL. The bench seat looked like a satelite photo of the grand canyon with volcanos of foam spewing out. It was deep in ill-fitting, undersized cheap Cooper rubber.

Curious, I went in and asked about it. The guy in there said they had just sold it. I asked how much...again, out of curiosity. Guy says they sold it for $3500!!!!!

Yeah, the market around here for 4x4's is pretty whacked. Of course, as I say this, I am currently snowed and iced in under the second storm this season with a 2004 Civic sedan as my best snow car LOL.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
That truck would have easily brought that here in Alaska if not more. I see 78 Fords bringing $3k, if it runs and its a functional 4WD that's the price.

Or worse.......took these out of the paper.

1976 Chevy P/U, clean, new motor, rebuilt trans, new parts, new snow tires, $5k

1985 Chevy S/B Pickup, 4x4, new tranny, rims, stereo $5500

And to think we let that *nice* 94 Chevy K3500 diesel go for only $5500.......*kick*

I know how you feel though, we had a heck of a time finding an older 4x4, course when we did we should have run screaming for the hills.

I bought the gold 2000 Mustang GT for 12,200. There were a few scratches, mainly on the plastic bumper, but the rest of the car is in line with only having 19800 miles.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... That's a great price and nooo miles, just be careful in the snow (DC right.?) cuz' it will be a great vehicle come spring .. thanks for letting me know ..

                       Enjoy.!

Yes snow in DC. Luckily I only live a mile from my office. I've owned Mustangs before so I know how dreadful they are in the snow.

Great input Terry. I guess I'll have to pass on this one :)

One thing intrigues me is: when is the best time to buy a used car, in terms of the vehicle age, bmw in particular. From the depreciation trend and maintenance point of view, it seems after 3 and half or 4 years, year to year True Cost to Own is getting relatively stabilized. As of now, 00-01 cars seem to be the best choices. What do you think?

Oh, I just come across another ads from local ferrari dealer:

    2000 BMW 528it Wagon Sedan:
Black on Beige leather, 21k miles, 5 speed transmission, Premium Package, Cold Weather Package, Moonroof, Keyless Entry with Security System, Factory Warranty still remaining.

asking 19.9K. I don't get to see the car yet; They close on Sundays. It sounds like a great deal to me. The only down side is I don't want to drive around with a wagon :(

    regards.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
where abouts is this? I would be more than happy to drive around in a wagon for this price.

From what I remember, this is probably a reasonable price for a 3 series, and storng for a 5'er, considering the mileage

  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
Indeed, where is this? I'd prefer a wagon, and that seems a good price.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
looks like (from an earlier post) that he might be in Seattle. Your must be at least half way there, so I'll give you dibs. Quite a hike from NJ.

FWIW, the sticker on that BMW would have been at least 42K, depending on all the options.

Here I am again. I hope this does not sound too cheesy. Is it possible to get vehicle transaction history (tax records that indicate vehicle transaction & etc), based on the vehicle's VIN # & or Title #? Would this type of information be considered as part of the public domain? I am thinking, that if I were to go to the State DMV office, I would be able to get this type of information. Am I crazy again? I do not know, you make the call.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
Ever heard of CarFax? Look at the ad to your left. They'll tell you how many times the car has changed hands, accident repair history, as well as odometer information.

What I am looking for is the amount of money that changed hands. For example if I were to go to a the County offices, I can research how much money a particular real property was purchased for (at least I believe this info is available @ the county offices).

whats the purpose? to figure out what the dealer has paid for a used vehicle? do a little research, it doesn't really matter what they paid, its what the going market price of a vehicle is in your area at any certain point and time.... do you know what Best Buy has paid for that 42" plasma? i think you'd be suprised, but they sell for what the going market price is at any point in time, ie - someone is cheaper, either buy from them or ask best buy to compete with the price....

if your looking at a car, do a little research, look around, present a fair deal to the dealer/seller....

I always wondered why Ford didn't offer the SHO engine as an option in other models. A 220hp/200 ft.lb. Probe SHO would have been a demon. They could have slotted a Mustang SHO between the LX and GT. Maybe Yamaha couldn't increase production. It's a shame, because that V-6 was spectacular.

Just wanted to let you know that I was patient and got $12k for the Audi -- a good bit more than you estimated. Now I get to think long and hard about my next vehicle...thanks for steering me away from trading!

Down Retail Rd...well that's up to you, you might see $9/$10,0 if you can get it to glow in the dark, 120% service, but the miles are Killing you here ...
    Good luck ....

    Terry and dkuhajda,

I just want to follow up with you guys and let you know I sold my 95 Ford Windstar "down retail road". I ended up taking it to four used car lots to see what my "I give up and sell it to a used car dealer" backup price would be. I got four quotes, all between $1500 and $1900. I ended up putting a nice classified ad in my local daily fishwrap with a price of $3,900.

I got a grand total of ONE call from the ad, but the lone caller was the real deal. He came and looked at the van. Came back the next day with the Mrs. and asked if I'd take $3500 cash on the barrel-head. I hemmed and hawed for a few beats and said I would. He gave me a $100 bill to hold the van over the weekend. They came back today with the remainder.

I just got back from the notary, and I have a stack of 35 $100 bills in my pocket and an empty space in my driveway. The market seems pretty soft for used cars of this sort, which I knew. But I thought I had it priced pretty fairly, so I was surprised to only get one call from my ad.

Thank you, guys, a whole bunch. Along with Edmunds TMV, your advice helped me come to earth with my pricing, unlike the $4500 to $5500 figures I got from Kelly and NADA guides. Just to refresh your memory, Terry, you told me to expect $2k-2.5k wholesale and $3.5-4.5 retail. dkuhajda said I could expect $2k wholesale and $3.5k retail, but said I would have a lot of trouble finding anyone with enough dough to actually pay for the van. Edmunds TMV told me to expect $2600 trade-in and $3300 private party.

Please note I'm not nitpicking your numbers or advice by noting it. I just wanted to save you from having to scroll back and find your earlier posts. And I fully realize the imprecision of the market. I just wanted to let you know how it all ended up. I really appreciate the tremendous help you guys provide here. Thanks again!!!

I am looking at an 2001 Chevy Malibu, it has 26,800 miles, is the Standard 4 door model, has power windows, locks and cruise. It also has the split folddown rear seat and has AM/FM/CD player. The car is beige in color with cloth interior. The car is very clean looking. The dealer just turned the rotors and put on new brake pads. He will sell it to me for $7700. I also can get a GM extended for 3 years 36000 miles for another $1000. What kind of a deal is this?, Is the GM (the best one) extended warranty worth it?. I checked the cars repair record from the dealers computer and it's had only a couple of minor problems so so. What do you think?

....... That would be my question also .. they paid $33,5 and your are going to give them an offer of $33,6 .... ? .. we are getting side-tracked, whats the point ..?

                          Terry.
  • tdomatdoma Member Posts: 48
I am just trying to see if what I am prepared to pay is reasonable assuming I can figure out exactly how much the dealer paid for the vehicle. In the example you provided, if they paid $33.5K for the vehicle, VIN # JNRAS08W53X202254, I will be hoping that an offer of $500-1000 over their cost will be reasonable. Hopefully I am not unnecessarily trying to complicate the issue here.
Please bare with me. If there is no-way to tell the figures involved then this issue should die a peaceful death.

what if they paid more than they should have, for whatever reason? You still gonna offer them $500-1000 over that?

Concentrate on what the vehicle is worth and what you're willing to pay.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ Let's see if we can make these figures a little clearer ...

(example) .. Let's say I take this vehicle in for $33,5 (hard money) on a trade .. it's going through service $150/$200, it's gonna see a detail $75, a this and that $100, pack $350 .. it will hit the table at around $34,225, probably ask $37,9, will take $35,9 .. so what I paid for the vehicle is a mute point.

    ...... Great description, thanks ..

(the one that shot his truck with a shotgun) ... oh that guy, is he out on parole already .?

You know the deal on these, the service has to be 125%, a shade tree mechanic or a Mr. Import guy will tear it apart if it needs stuff, no fill no paintwork .. color is right, miles are low, both tops, cold breeze(?), soft top has to be strong .. "might" invest in some sneakers, gotta a have a superb ad, a Glorious super detail, finish any service, probably worth in and around the $9's on a trade .. down Retail Rd $14,9 *asking* and $13,5/$14,5 gets a new owner, as long as there isn't any shotgun holes ....

                     Let me know ..

tdoma: As far as wanting to know what "the dealer" paid for it, I sympathize.

Guys, we all understand how this works, and if he got the car for fifty cents he still ain't gonna sell it for a $2000 profit... but sometimes I would like to know if it's worth the trouble to try.

Let's suppose Mr. Dealerman's got a car keeping the top layer of the asphalt from delaminating for a month or three; it's worth $8 he's got $8 in it, I know I can buy it for $9 and everyone happy. But what if the lady that traded it in was busty and it was a sunny day and he put $9,3 into a Mustang convertible...? He's gonna hold out for $10, it's human nature... and I'm gonna have to go buy something else.

There's a Ford dealership here in town where they must be making profit on storage fees... they've got a 1995 Club Wagon with 100k miles that just had it's birthday on their lot, and they're asking, are you ready, $7k for the piece of junk.

I happen to think that had they paid $4 for it, someone would have picked it up for $5,3 last summer and gotten themselves an OK deal. 'tis a funny business y'all are in...

But no, it's not only impossible to figure out what someone paid -- unless it came from the auction, then other dealers can dig it up -- but it's pointless 'cuz you never know everything else about the deal... overallowance, etc. etc.

Best to know what stuff is worth; what it's worth to YOU, and then make an offer and walk if you don't come to an agreement.

    -Mathias
