If the van is priced at $3k or more, it will not sell, IMO.

Keep it under $2k and you will find a CASH buyer.

for your opinons guys. I'll pass 'em along.

I think he's gonna take the van to CarMax to see what they'll give him, just as a baseline. Can't hurt....

Buying that Toyota would probably be a mistake. For one thing, it has 200,000 miles on it! The head gasket may be the least of it's troubles.

So, the head comes off and it's determined the problem is much more than a gasket. Then what? a used engine of unknown quality?

Personally, I think you would be MUCH better off spending a bit more money.

    Others may disagree...

....... Well, it's got some miles .. it's a conversion van, what can I say, In Chi -Town there doing in and around the $700/$1,000 figure on a trade -IF, they are super clean, no rust, waaay deep in round things and haven't been wrestling with one of Aka's Mooses ..

Down the dark a curvy lane to Retail Rd, $2,900 *asking* and drop kick that dude off the driveway for the first $1,5/$2,500 .. the 5.2 saves it, the conversion part kills it, cargo vans are in bigger demand ... let us know how Carsmack does ...... :)

You know it isn't moose we tangle with around here, the last altercation was the result of a out of control tree. So, you see, its not the moose you have to watch out for anymore.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Tree Mooses, very rare, they only come out with the snipes late at night ........ :)

Used big vans are popular in low income areas. Should sell easily since it's an early 90's model. To less fortunate people, a 1994 vehicle is not so old, compared to all the 1980's buckets still smoking.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Yup, I knows it, but hubby seems to keep finding the darn things, I really wish he would quit it.
  • janzjanz Member Posts: 129
We don't want to spend a ton of money, but I'm no longer sure this is the answer.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... What saves you here is the extended part, because the miles are on the tall side ..

If the service is all there, no Mormon drive-by's, no K-Mart kisses, cold air, no weird science in the interior .. then trade, in and around the low $7's, "could" maybe crawl towards the $8's figure if it's Reeeal nice .. if it needs stuff, start deducting ..

Good luck and I will be holding my breath waiting to see what happens ...

                          Terry :)

.......... It's a big fat cold winter in the upper half of the country (and it's been a little cool here) and depending on the condition they seem to be getting some extra large money .. "most" (not all) clean 01 Impreza wagon L's with miles in the 50/60k range are doing in and around the strong $7's at the auctions .. that tells me they are probably seeing $8,9+ at the dealer lot's ...

                        I hope this helps ...

                            Terry.
  • waydewayde Member Posts: 198
It's been perfect. The reason I want to trade it it is that I am buying a house... so I want a lower payment and better gas mileage.
I had always owned smaller/sporty cars before the 4Runner... I just wanted to try something different. As much as I love the Runner in the snow cars are so much more fun.
    Thanks again.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... The miles are a little tall and it's a handshaker .. depending on the color and condition, it's probably worth the high $10's, low low $11's on a trade ...

If your going down Retail Rd, you need some deep rubber, a great ad, a super detail and don't forget to finish any service ... the hand buys what the eye see's, and if it's dirty, scratched and it needs stuff you will be one of many, not one of few, so spend a few bucks .. nice, big fat 5 liner ad, *asking* $13,900 in the biggest paper in your area and sniff and cry at $12,5/$13,5 but take it, it's a car, not your Grand Ma's wedding pictures .. don't forget to park the ego .. the VR6 saves this one.

SUV's.? .. no matter what folks want to tell you, it becomes One thing only -personal taste- you have picked some good ones but you will need to DRIVE them, not around the block and Not with a salesperson .. drop by your local dealer and drive each and everyone for at least an hour (some will take much less.l.o.l.), drive over your streets, your hills, your neighbors mailbox, then make a decision ... Remember, your going to be in this pup for awhile.

                 I hope this helps ...

                           Terry.

    Hi Terry,
What do you think a 03 suburban LS 4x4 with 6000 miles on it would get for trade in Massachusetts?
They are discounting 04 Lt around $10,000.
  • thelthel Member Posts: 767
Looking at a 2000 Miata. Red base with 58,000 miles. 5-speed (naturally). Only options are a luggage rack, power windows and a cd/cassette player. It also has new tires, which for me is actually a turn-off....I'd prefer one with old tires, so I could slap on some Yokohama ES100's :D

Dealer's asking $11,950 and it has been there for awhile. What would be a reasonable amount to expect to pay for this bad boy?

    Thanks in advance Terry!

Just wanted to give you a Thank You for the help on the 03 X type Jag. (6,100 miles)
We finally found a Chrysler Limited for our friend with a handicap conversion, the hard part was getting a Dodge dealer to give us $22,500 for the trade, minus all the rebates, but things worked out well.

    As always - Thanks!

I have a 2000 s80 2.9, moondust, with 82K miles, clean (very), no dings/stains/smells, and clean history. All service records available and up to date. Seems the kicker is that it has cloth seats. I gasped when I heard the trade in value since I bought it new 4 years ago. The story I get is that the cloth seats and no sunroof actually decrease the value of the car. rroyce10 what would you think it is worth? Is the cloth seat thing true? This doesn't jive with the edmunds value. I'm considering selling it myself, but am concerned that any buyer would actually have that much cash to offer - not the typical $5K high mileage used car.

There appear to be a few out there now. Anyone have any advice with price reductions for one with around 9000 miles?

I am really looking for a percentage depreciation for less than 1 year old used vehicle with this many miles to let me calculate an offer. Most have about this many miles on with different varieties of options.

Any advice welcome - oh an also how is an untitled demo vehicle values with regards to depreciation and value? (general rule of thumb is fine)

    thanks
  • volvodan1volvodan1 Member Posts: 188
I'll leave Terry to give value, but I can tell you that no slider hurts. No leather sinks it. Sometimes when people are buying they save 2k not getting something, but it costs at least that much when you trade. We still have a new 03 base S80 that we can't give away. My guess is putting it up in the fishwrap is the way to go. Make sure you put cloth to save hassle.

I'm sure there are examples all over, but I see this a lot with Devilles. If you are buying new above the mason dixon you should get heated seats and you will probably get all of your money back when you trade.

Re: book value. This situation is similar to high mileage deduct. It is usually a lot more than "the book says".

This is a vehicle that is being leased by my company. It comes off lease soon. It has a residual value of $13500.

I'm thinking of making the leasing company an offer to buy it out. What is the right $ that it is worth. I hoped with all the big incentives of late that a 2001 would be cheap.

    Hey terry,

I posted here a while back about trading/selling my 2001 V70 T5. We ended up holding it til the end of the lease, and guess what? It goes back in two weeks.

I have been looking at 2000 or 2001 Passats and I came across one of the following:

    2000 Passat GLX Sedan
    44000 Miles
    Tan Leather
    Monsoon
    6-CD Changer
    Green Exterior
    VW Certified
    Internet Price : $13,995

I am in the philly metro area.

The dealer is not willing to move on this price as it is already discounted from their price on the lot.

The car drove nicely itself, but I do not want to get hosed.

Is this a good deal or should I pass?

    Thanks,

    AS

That a stick or automatic? Inquiring minds will want to know.

I'm no expert, but seems at least reasonable to me. heck, I might be interested, if I actually needed a car. It did sticker for close to 30K new, IIRC.

Terry ,what's my car worth ?

Its silver, automatic, 20200 miles, EX model come with 4 wheel drive, moonroof, side air bag, anti lock brake. Car is showroom clean, no scratch whatsoever.

I checked the trade in value on my 02EX on the net. NADA shows $18250, Kelly blue book $15600, Edmund $16480. Which should I trust ? I plan to trade it for a new Toyota 4runner.

........ Not much of a description of the options, leather, slider.? .. I'm assuming it's a half-ton, right.?

With 6,000 miles you couldn't have done much damage .. if it's clean, 3rd seat, all the right options, it's worth in and around $28/$29 figure trade side ....

                          Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... The miles hold this one back .. depending on how long he has had it, he probably has the high $8's, low low $9's in it .. unless this one has a new Tag-Heuer in the trunk I would think $10,5/$10,9 would get it home .....

                         Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Your welcome and I'm glad things worked out .. that was a pretty nice vehicle, I should of bought that one myself .l.o.l.

........ Your right, there is a potpourri of used 03 Cayennes (S 3.2 models) out there .. depending on where you live they are doing in and around the $46/$47 range with 5/7/9k at the auctions, these usually have an MSRP of around $60,0ish .. as fair as a demo is concerned that's kinda hard to say, it will depend on the dealer and where you live ....... :)

I have a feeling the new V8 Touaregs with all the stuff won't be doing to well, with miles in the 3/5k range there only doing "around" $10 grand less, $36/$37 ....

                          Terry.

    Terry,

How about the trade-in value of our SUV:

    2002 GMC Envoy SLT 4WD
Pewter ext w/ gray leather interior
    running boards
GMC Off-road package (better tires and scuff protection plates on underside)
Bose premium sound w/ 6 CD changer
    37K miles
Excellent condition inside and out (even tires show less than moderate wear as car saw mostly highway miles)

    no sunroof

    thanks in advance...

.......... An S80 "without" leather and no slider ...? .... Yeeeow.! .. I bet there's not 50 of those puppys running around and I have only seen two, and I look at a LOT of Volvo's ...

Volvodan1 brings up some excellent points .. S80's are pretty nice drivers and that market expects the luxury that goes with .. Well, let's see here, it's the right color and the miles are a little on the Stiff side, but you say it's in really good condition ..

Trade side, depending on the dealer it's worth maybe $7,5ish, might could "maybe" roll towards the $8 figure if it's like brand new, rubber from yesterday, no kisses or re-paints, etc ... down Retail Rd, $9,900 *asking* and grab the first $8,9/$9,5 .. the high miles and the lack of the "right stuff" kill this one.

                       sorry :(

                           Terry.

...... Color is ok, miles are alright, it's a V6 GLX, it's has all the stuff (new rubber.?) Auto, it has the certified junk ..

Dealer probably has the the high $11's, low $12's in it, maybe a little more with the sillyfied stuff .. actually it sounds like a pretty good deal, see what $13,5 will do, but don't loose it if you like it ....

Let me know what happens ...

Can you help me plan out my trade-in, Terry?

I have a '98 Buick Park Ave Ultra
    3.8L V6 w/ supercharger
    134k miles
    Air Conditioning
    Power Steering
    Power Windows
    Power Door Locks

    Leather
    Dual Power Seats

I am trading it in at a Pointiac/Buick/GMC dealership for a new (or hardly used) GMC Truck. They have other Park Aves on the lot, so I'm hoping the trade would be reasonable. KBB has
the trade at $5200. I believe it, with the miles, but maybe you think differently...

Did the dealer tell you he sold it for $14900? If so, I wouldn't necessarily take it at face value unless you have some history with him. In the past, I've asked dealers "what you get for it?" a few times just to see what they'd say. What I've noticed is that it ALWAYS sold at the lot asking price.... hmmmmmm. Not likely considering some of the asking prices. I no longer bother to ask questions like that.
