........ Miles aren't bad for the year, color is good for Hotlanta, it's a GLE with the leather, slider, Bozo sound and the nav ..

If it's a stand tall dude, looks new, no paint by numbers, no pin-cushion interior .. then trade side, in and around the $18's, might even get real lucky and see $19,0 if all is well in the land of Falcons ....

You see these scams all the time on Yahoo classifieds, and I know a lot of garbage goes on at ebay, but its a lot harder to get away with big scams when you are putting up VIN#s, etc... I've just never run across these before on ebay, and now they are coming out of the woodwork.

This is probably a $30K car or even more.

Hear you loud and clear. Finally had my first call today. See how it goes this weekend. If I was offered $2000 trade-in sight unseen, seems $3500 retail would not be pushing it.

I would be careful. A lot of times when you have these "super bargains" on E-Bay, they are pulled before the end of the auction.

Also, sometimes you will be approached by e-mail anout an "off EBay" deal that the buyer has.

but it has a BuY It Now feature, which means, if you choose to buy it now, the auction ends right then and there. So there is no pulling of the item. That guy has a real strong feedback (over 200 and all positive). So either he has turned to scamming, his feedback has been rigged, or its a mistake.

...... If you look at the surroundings, the pics were shot in the fall .. also the mileage reads 31,950, not 35k as is posted .. if I (or they) ran it through the auction today (just about anywhere) it would probably do the $30/$31 zipcode ..

Price: US $12,490.00 --- whats up with this dude ...?

Also, "positive" ratings can be done by 8 guys posting 5 months ago, both your uncles posting a year ago, the 10 guys that post from home, then post from work, etc, etc, plus they can say the vehicle was sold 3.5 minutes ago when you posted your "buy it now" figure ... something just ain't right.

    Hey Terry,

Up here in the land of long-faced liberals, I'm thinking about dumping my impulsively purchased 02 Jetta:

      2002 Jetta GLS Sedan
      1.8L Turbo w/ 5spd
      17600 miles
      Baltic green w/black leather
Heated seats, moonroof, 17" alloy wheels, monsoon sound
clean inside and out - no dings, rips, or mars

The market up here seems to be flooded with VWs, but I thought I'd give it a try!

Notice how it says you have to be on a pre-approved buyers list to bid? That and the absurdly low price means he's (she's?) fishing for car buyers and would never sell this car for that price...

Looking at his feedback, there's no way it's scammed though - too many huge feedback posters over a steady, long period of time. That, and you can only leave feedback after a closed auction... however, he (she?) has only sold 5 items out of 283 transactions, so all that great feedback is from buying stuff.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
guys, all the feedback i've been able to look at has been for $2-$9 items from sellers. strong feedback would look a little different to me... a $200 investment starting now would give me some really good-looking profile in about 6 months.
also, the one i checked out was in "US", with not even the state given... whatever is going on, it's way hinky.

hold on - I you have 3 ebay IDs, and so do I, we can list stuff on ebay all day long and sell to each other, leaving glowing feedback - let's see - 100 car speakers (that don't exist) - that's 100 positive feedback reports. It's not hard to build a 200-300 feedback reputation without having ever sold anything - except air.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
    Let me see ...

Terry says that car is worth $30k. Buy it now is $13K.

If I own a car that is worth $30k and I want to sell it for $13k. Mmmm ... Doesn't that make you suspicious ...

    Is it hot??

Does it have blood stains on the hood?
  • spektrespektre Member Posts: 80
Ok, you're right - but that's a lot of work over a long time (11 Feb 01) to pull this one off, and there are a lot of user ids in the feedback section, so I doubt it about the 'you have 3, I have 3' idea - but the guy does leave such automatic and impersonal feedback.

I wonder if somehow this is an ebay account that's been hijacked or something of that nature (identity theft?)...

Or maybe it's one of those 'urban legend' divorce sales, you know the one where the wealthy, disgruntled wife sells her philandering husband's Porsche for $100!
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,441
The big red flag to me is the "private auction". Maybe you e-mail the guy and he says "if you send him a money order for the whole amount, he'll approve you for the auction, and you can buy it right now!!".

I think these IDs have been hijacked, or some con artist has been very patient.. There are plenty of legitimate deals on Ebay, but this can't be one of them... and, I'm not shopping... I just bought mine in December... Now, all I can afford to do is talk about it.

    regards,
    kyfdx

Just got this. Yeah, I'm DEFINITELY going to send the money to Italy, up-front. Riiight. Already reported it to eBay.

    Hello,

My name is Toledo Mulder and i am glad about your interest in hearing details about my BMW.First of all i wanna tell you some details regarding to the car and the way we can complete a transaction.
Since november 2002 i am located in Italy where i tried to develop a business down here in Milano but unfortunately the things didn't work the way i expected and now i really need cash because i am at one step to lose my restaurant from here, so i decided to sell the car. Because i wanna deal as soon as possible i am ready to cover the shipping costs and insurance. You will not have to pay additional taxes, just only the price for it.
All i need from you is to make a $2000 deposit up front through Western Union ( i have an Western Union agent location next to me here in Italy). After I see that the money are available for pick up I'll proceed with shipping to your location. If you will like it (which I am sure you will ) then you will keep it and you will send me the rest of the amount
    after.
I asked you money up front for shipping and insurance.
You will have 7 days ( one week ) inspection. After inspection you have
to send me the rest of money .
Let me know if we have a deal.
Looking forward to hear from you soon.

    Best Regards.

Hi Terry. I've found a 98 V70 T5 that I'm considering. It's got 80,419 miles on it and is listed for $10,995 in Thomaston, CT. It's black, and from what I can tell has most options (haven't actually been to see/drive it yet, but plan on going this weekend)... auto with TCS, heated leather seats, etc. I'm wondering if you think this is a fair asking price (and if there might be any room there), and if there's anything in particular I should look for when I go to check it out. Your help is much appreciated...
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
Um, did he bother to even hint as to where the car is actually located? Wonder how many people have sent a $2k 'deposit' so far. Lemme get this straight: I can send this joker two grand to Italy, at which point he's going to 'ship' me a BMW worth $30k for my testing, after which (if I 'like' the car), I'll send him the remainder of the bargain $12k price? Sounds amazing, where do I sign up?

....... Oh, your in the land of Colonel Klink, ooop's I did it again, Colonel Kerry, sorry ...

Hey, if your looking for a real nice vehicle, I have this 7,000 mile 03 Acura TL "S" type with the nav and it's in white with the tan guts for $15,000 ... nice car, like new, not actually mine though, I'm just doing the paper work for this nice old guy thats kinda stuck in Peru (long story) but anyway, after his divorce and his last operation and the wheel fell off of his wheelchair he's gotta get rid of it .. now, if you send me $2,500 ...................... :))

... on cars.com a few months back. found a 2002 BMW 330i in perfect condition with something like 11K miles listed for $21K. this guy was "from Germany" and had to get back there right away, needed to sell the car quick, bla bla bla. when I contacted him I got a reply telling me that in order to complete the transaction I'd have to use this escrow service. did a little research and found all sorts of info on escrow service scams. I pressed him about using the escrow... telling him I'd come down to look at the car (he was near DC, I'm in CT) and bring a money order or bank check, which I'd hand him if the car checked out... the ad was gone the next day and (big surprise) I never heard back from him again!
  • wagonguywagonguy Member Posts: 18
... sorry about the double post asking about the '98 T5. when I submitted the first time the request timed out (or so the message on my screen said), so I resubmitted.

......... Pretty nice drivers, even with the miles -if- all the service has never missed a beat, should see 200k properly serviced ..

Clean, cold air, deep sneakers, no oh oh it's Maaco, just a nice Volvo with 80k .. if so, then the dealer might have the high $7's, low $8's in it, I would think in and around the $9,9ish figure should make both happy ...

Yeah, I drove a sedan version extensively a few years back... really liked it. Thanks for the reply!

Might I bother you with another query? I currently drive a '97 Outback Ltd. Wagon with about 93K on the odometer... black w/ 5-spoke alloy wheels (as opposed to the standard Outback wheels), heated leather seats, single CD player addded (though no upgraded speakers), aftermarket alarm system.

Aesthetically: In good condition with the exception of a scratch along the driver's side front fender (keyed in a parking lot), and a crack in the plastic bumper cover in front of the pass side front wheel well (close to the bottom, and not very noticeable). Interior is in great shape (and I don't smoke).

Mechanically: Dealer tells me at least one of my cam seals is leaking, which I now know is very common with these engines. Side story - I'm pissed that they didn't recommend replacing the seals when I had the timing belt and water pump done about 20K ago, since I'm sure they do these ALL THE TIME. The job is all labor, and lots of it... includes removing the timing belt anyway (which, they also tell me, might have to be replaced AGAIN while they're in there if it's been leaked on!). Total of about $440, including $80 for another belt, if necessary. >:( But, that aside... maintenance has been done regularly, all by said dealer. Pads on all 4 wheels are relatively new, and I just (end of Dec) put on a new set of Michelin Harmony tires.

All of that said, wondering what you think I might get for a trade, or if I'd be better off trying to sell it myself. Keep in mind this is Subaru Country. And, regardless, would it pay for me to get any of those things fixed before attempting to do either? Body work is expensive, as is the seal job...

Thanks again for your help... it's great that you've provided (and continue to provide) such valuable insight to so many people!

Terry and all....I would appreciate your advice on what is sensible to pay for this car.

In Wisconsin, 2001 Sebring Limited Convertible, gold with tan leather and 19,600 miles. Casette, CD changer and about every option. The car looks like showroom new.

BUT...but...but - it is a Daimler Chrysler buy back. That means it is a car repurchased by the manufacturer because of Wisconsin state lemon law. It is stamped 'Manufacturer buyback' on the title. The dealer says it was an air conditioning problem.

The car comes with a 12 month unlimited mile warranty from Chrysler. Is it the wrong car at any price? Dealer is asing $15,500 which is full retail and way too high but are very anxious to deal. What is the right price?

Thanks to all for your help.

    Scott.

just remember, if you buy this, someday you may want to sell it, and that title will be hanging around it's neck like a millstone.

Given that, if it were me and I really wanted it, I probably wouldn't pay more than 50% of normal retail, even though I probably wouldn't know about the AC anyway, since I would never use it in a convert.

    Hi,

I'm tossing around the idea of selling this private party, possibly trade--

2003 Tacoma XCab, 4WD, SR5 V6, 5-speed manual, TRD pkg, upgraded BFG tires and steel rims, sliding rear window, pl/pw/cruise/tilt, cd/cass, a/c, cloth buckets, floor mats, about 7,800 miles, color--gold, dealer serviced, few minor scratches in bed, no bedliner/rhino, in So Cal, original owner since 8/03, no damage/problems.

Thanks for any feedback you can provide--

It is indeed - lots of variety here lately.
I am wondering if I should leave the Sebring lemon up in the tree. I look forward to more advice as to what what price makes picking it worthwhile.

    Scott.
