Thanks for the excellent input Terry.

Carmax offered me $18k even, exactly what KBB says for my car in 'good' condition. I'm going to attempt to purchase a new car tomorrow, and if that dealer will match Carmax, I'll let them have it, otherwise it's going to Carmax.

.... 2003 V70 2.4T - 24,xxx miles. Premium package, 17 inch wheels, leather. NO third row seat. Platinum green paint. No noticeable scratches, and tires have lots of tread.
    Asking 30,500.

2001 V70 T5 - 47,xxx miles. Premium package, upgraded stereo, 17 inch wheels with upgraded rims, leather. YES to third row seat. Silver paint. No noticeable scratches (looks very nice actually), and tires are only ankle deep in rubber in my opinion.
Asking 22,900, down from 25,400 (or at least I was told...).

                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Good description, thanks .. 03 (not AWD, right.?) .. dealer probably has the $24/$25ish figure in it, add some service, add some detail, probably hits the table at $26ish and $28ish should get it home, no 3rd seat ...

01, miles are a little steep, 3rd seat and the tires are ho-hum .. dealer probably has $21ish in it and is lookin' for a new home at $22,9 .. see if he will do $22,0 and go from there ............ :)

Don't forget to let me know what happens .....!

When I sold cars there was a Chevy car, can't remember what it was except it said Z34 on the side. Anyway, that darn thing would never start, never, the whole time I was there in sales. Service would get it going, customer would come in and whamo, dead car again. Or *if* we did get it going it would die before it hit the end of the lot. Car sat on the lot for a year, don't know what happened to it after that. Then again nothing Chevy has ever been nice to me.

Now my mom on the other hand......she has that 96 Cavalier with 200k+ miles on it and its just ticking along. Hubby will change its oil this weekend, crazy little car.

Here in Texas we save the sales tax on the trade amount. If we get $16950 in trade that's the same as having $18000 in cash in hand. On the BMW trade, if you save sales tax, you could take a little less than Carmax offer and still come out further ahead than selling to Carmax.

A friend of mine might need to sell his 2004 Suburu WRX (not the STi). Silver w/Black interior, ("short shifter") stick shift, carbon fibre interior option, upgraded factory stereo w/CD, heated leather seats, 5K miles, really nice condition. He also bought an extended warranty, & optional (aftermarket) 17" alloys w/Pirellis, plus has 16" stock alloys with almost new Dunlop snows. (I suppose he could sell one set of rims separately). N. Vermont, about 40 miles from Burlington; altho I could also sell it for him in the metro Boston area. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Terry,

You've given me some valuable information on a few TL's in the past few weeks. I wonder if you wouldn't be so kind as to assess this one (it should be my last):

2000 TL with navigator, 35k miles, White with tan interior, Charleston, SC. New Tires and brakes, very clean inside and out. Tinted windows. Rides nice, very quiet. Local dealer is asking $22.9. I'm real sure they are negotiable on that price. What would be a decent deal for a buyer of this car?

    TIA
    Bill

It's a 2000 with 61,000 miles, and it's in very good condition (no more than normal wear, and little of that). It's silver, has the premium package, spoiler, etc. Better yet, it's been very well-maintained. It has already had all the 60,000 mile maintenance done including the timing belt. It also has brand new tires (the best ones rated at TireRack.com). Thanks in advance for your opinions,

Did the deal late yesterday. Got $18,100 for the Honda. The G35 was a 2004 black on black sedan. 6 speed, sunroof, and aero pack for $29,900 before tax, title, tag. As near as I can tell, that's invoice for the G. They beat my gap figures with their first offer. I was a bit stunned.

It was also rather difficult for both wife and I to conceal the grins on the test drive. The G's got soul.

Terry, I am very grateful. Thanks

........ I think you had a great idea with your ability to sell it in the Boston area .. 5 times the population 5 times the chance of selling it for the right money, plus the extended warranty is a big help ..

Trade side, in and around the mid to high $18's, then he will have to wait 6/8 wks to get back half of what he paid for the warranty .. with a great Ad and this puppy lookin' brand new, you can *ask* in and around the $21,9 figure for it and see $21/$21,5 for it .. the "fast and the fungus" love these cars, I bet with the big Boston paper it might last 3/4 days, I have seen 03's get the tall $19's on the Retail side .....

What an awesome board this is.

I am looking to trade in my '02 Highlander, non Limited, AWD, V6, with the following: Roof rack, tow pkg, hitch, mudguards, tinted windows. 57,000 miles. Overall its in good shape except dings on the back bumper from backing into the boat trailer....aargghh!!! Tires are at the end of their life (=need new).
I am buying a CRV EX or LX AWD (can't decide yet) and the dealers have offered me $17,500 for the Toy. Terry, can you tell me what you think? Thanks.

    ........ Good description, thanks ..

               Okay, let me make sure - it's a 02, as in 2002, not a 04 not 03, it's a 02 .. okay I got it and you live in MN .....

For starters, how much were you towing .? service 100% ? .. Big miles, it's a 4wd, non-Limited, we need new skins, we have a few lumps and bumps and your getting ready to run out of winter up there .... $17,5 ..? seems a little on the low side, even with $600 of needed rubber and Big miles ..

I must be missing something ~ thats 01 money (repaint, terrorist attack, click click in the 4wd, been towing a 40ft Formula, Wal-Mart invasion .??) .. have you shopped this dude around.? .. sounds like $18,5 unless you have been using it as silly putty at the boat ramps .......

....... Sounds like a nice one .. right color, low miles, new sneakers, Nav, new stoppers, sounds nice .. all except for that $22,9 part ~ did I really read $22,900 ..?

                and it's a 2000, not a 02 or a 01 ...? .. and the "SC" doesn't stand for Southern California and it's white, hmmm ..

Let's say (just for the grins and glory) the dealer made a mistake and thought it was an 01, let's say he read the speedo incorrectly and thought it had 25k instead of 35k, let's say the dealer thought it had 2 Nav's instead of one (there's a theory .l.o.l.) and it's a CPO, plus all the new stuff ... he could, he might have the $18,0 figure in it and *ask* $22,900, but I'm sure he would snatch $20/$21,0 in a Yankee heartbeat ..

All that being said: it's still an 00, it still has 35k, it's still white, did I say it's still an 00 as in 2000 ...... dealer might have "could" "maybe" have the $16's in it with a CPO and all the new stuff, I would think that the high $18's, low low $19's would send it south -- $22,900 ..?? .. not on this planet .! .. did I mention this was a 2000 ..? .l.o.l...

We leased a new Millenia in 1999 and loved it. We ran the lease out and didn't buy the car but leased an Accord instead. It was a nice car but certainly a step down. We have been shopping for another car now and want to move up again. We looked at the Lexus ES330, a very nice car but really expensive for what you get, same with the Acura TL. Nissan and Mitsubishi styling leave me cold (my opinion of course). We started looking for used Millenia's and found a 2000 near us that looks EXACTLY like out old one except for the wheels which are not chrome and a stripe which is a different color. It only has about 21,000 miles on it and it checks out clean in Car Fax.. My question is: Is $15,999.00 a decent price for this car? It sure is tempting and the dealer won't move from that price.
  • sandman46sandman46 Member Posts: 1,798
Terry will be able to answer your question, but as he always says..."buy and drive what you like"!
He's definitely right about this, why buy a car that you really don't like or had to settle for? Sometimes one has to go with their gut feelings, hopefully you can get this car for a price you feel good about!
With my passion for cars, I just wish my bank account could afford cars I really want. Luckily, I'm satisfied with what I've got, I want a nicer ride...but I don't need a nicer one! Once the kids are outta college and on their own, then it'll be my turn!!!

    Terry,

Yes, you read it right, $22.9 for an '00. Its not an Acura CPO, but it comes with a 3yr comprehensive warranty (they tried to duplicate what an Acura dealer was offering, including a 140 point inspection).

My wife and I went in with a listing of all the online pricing guide values, a similar TL (no Nav) available at the Acura dealer down the road for $19.9, and the information you had given earlier.

We bought it for $18.9. I think we did the best we could. The salesman at the dealer down the road had ticked off my wife, so we were more willing to deal with this one.

Again, thanks for all the help.

Looking to trade/private sale a 2002 honda cr-v in honolulu. It is a 2wd lx model(no side airbags), AT, 40k miles, color is Tan, and it is in very good condition inside/out with couple of minor small door ding scratches. I added the extra accessories(hood protector, front mud guard, cargo mat, and tinted the windows. Lx models does not come factory tinted)

What do you think is the realistic value for a trade in or private sale?

    thanks in advance

I have a deal to trade for an 05 Subaru Wagon--paying under invoice for new car and getting $6,000 on trade--and car is the color and has the equipment I would pick. Sounds like a great deal to me. If the reviews on the new Subaru Turbo are favorable end of month, they could become tight. And Dealer has offered to work with Subaru to see if I can get something back for head replacement since they now have an extended warranty for this problem.

Maybe I could do better, but life is too short

.......... Thanks for a good description and especially the area ~ home of the Aloha auction.

It's an 2wd 02 LX, we got the auto thing going on, right color anywhere, a few dings and dents, 40k, got some extra's and you say it's in pretty good shape ...

Hawaii is "kinda" like the Left Coast (minus the crime, plus more people can speak English on the Islands .l.o.l.), high miles are considered just average if their clean .. so, if we have deep sneakers, service is right there, no-repaints: then trade side, in and around the mid to high $12's, "maybe" the low low low $13's if it's super nice, clean and it needs -0- ... down Retail Beach (not sure on this one, it's been 2 years since I have been there, so check all the Ad's) $15,495 *asking* and $14/$15 sends it over to Napili .............. ;)

    Terry,

Thanks for the information on my wife's C-Class a few weeks ago. With the family expanding, we need something bigger, and she likes the RX300. Went to the Lexus dealer in Jacksonville, and after the worst experience from what I can only hope and pray is a green pea in sales, much less Lexus sales, even going so far as to pull the "what do I have to do to sell this car today" line. Anyway, the first RX we wanted to drive had a dead battery and he couldn't figure out how to use the charger, so we took another one and the wife is all but sold on the car, except the price and the sales guy. The facts:

    2001 RX300 2 wheel drive
Vapor blue (very light blue) over black (I know) leather
all the goodies, premium pack, auto, 6 CD changer, slider, wood steering wheel and wood trim, HID headlights
    44,000 miles
    CPO
at THE (one and only) Lexus dealer in Jacksonville, Florida
Carfax and the original window sticker shows the car started life in Raleigh, NC and was picked up at the (according to the genius sales guy) "special Lexus dealer only" auction in Orlando... when I asked if he meant FAAO he had no clue what I meant.

They're asking $29,995 which seems to be all the money in the world, especially when I go down the street to an independent high end used car dealer and they have the same car, same equipment, same miles, pearl white over tan for $25,500 OTD!

Thanks again for your help as always!

  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Hey Sean .. now your not talking about my buddies on Atlantic Ave are you .? .l.o.l... actually I think they bought it at the Atlanta sale, but I could be wrong ..

$29,9 is a L I T T L E on the tall side .. they probably paid in and around the $21ish figure for it, maybe $22ish if they got stupid and bought it online ... so figure auction fee $250, transport $250, a little service $250, a little CPO $900, then add a little detail action $75, maybe tires $500, add a little pack $400 and it probably comes to the table at "in and around" that $24,5 figure ..

Miles are just ok at 44k, $26,900 would be all the $$ (Wow) ~ $27,5 if you can't live without it (double Wow)~ $29,9 if your just brain dead .. they probably have it marked so high because of folks that want $12,000 for $8,500 trades .l.o.l.. you may want to go check the other guy if they get stupid, plus it's a better color and your not paying for that $1,900 warranty ..

                            Terry ;-)

PS: when I asked if he meant FAAO he had no clue what I meant.

             Thats ok, I was at a Chrysler store a few weeks ago showing a friend the new 300 and they had a new Crossfire Coupe in the showroom floor and the salesman walked up to me and said: "We are going to be the first dealer in the country to have the new Crossfire Convert, and would I like to put my name on their list" .. "I said no thank you, I'm driving one" .. he responded by saying "thats impossible.! .. Detroit hasn't even sent the first one" .. I waved as I drove away in it ...... ;}

Dealer might have the the ultra high $5's, low $6's in it, add a this and a that, and it might break the table at $7ish .. $8,900 would be just about ALL of it, a black 2WD slushbox with a 2dr in SC, hmmm .......

1998 Acura TL 2.5,leather,130k miles,sr,good condition on Toyota dealers lot for 4 months. they are asking $7000 ,seems high for the miles.

2000 Olds Alero,65kmiles,auto,good cond, on same lot for at least 2 months. I know they have had brake problems, but maybe could pick up cheap.

    1997 Cougar XR7,private owner,excellent cond.,60k miles, 8 cyl engine,trac control,abs,alloys,spoiler,keyless,security,
    asking $6500,seems too high.

LOL.......Terry, you are priceless, I would have LOVED to have seen the look on his face.

You sure you weren't at the Chrysler dealer in Fairbanks?? That sounds like something they would say.

Heck, they still want MSRP + $3k mark up for an 04 Jeep GC, and forget about the 04 Durango, they want stupid money for them......hmmm probably why they have 30 of them on their lot.

Thanks Terry you pegged the difference at $3500(yes it was a 4x4 Do ghe), the best the dealer could do was $5,200 so we walked . Trade in for the Aurora was $10,800 sale price of the Durango was $16,000. My reference at an even swap was in meant to be sarcastic. My original offer my car and 3k so I guess I was not too far off .I know an even steven is probally next to impossible ,you know car dealers they need at least a buck to change hands or they are not happy.

So the search continues. I will keep you posted.

Terry, heres feedback, and I appreciate your advice on the 2002 Highlander post #18574.
I shopped it around and found a dealer to give me $20,000 for the Highlander but then chagred MSRP for the CRV-LX. If I use the approximate number you gave me of $18,500 (for the trade in), it means that I got the Honda for about invoice. I am very happy with that! (Only $50 in sales tax and no advertising fees for me).

          Thanks again!!!!

    Terry and any other dealers,

In looking for a car for my son, I've found a 1999.5 Nissan Pathfinder SE 4x4. Black with gray fabric, new tires, very clean, car fax is clean, with 83000 miles. I can purchase it for $9500 from a dealer which seems like a pretty good deal. I'm located in NE Tennessee.

Edmunds rates the 1999-2001 Pathfinder a "Used Car Best Buy" for midsized SUVs and I had good success with a 1995 Pathfinder I owned for several years.

    Your opinion?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Just thought I'd updated everyone real quick on my trade-in situation over the weekend. I had a black, 1987 Ford Thunderbird with 138,000 miles that I was going to try to trade in this past Saturday as I was buying my new Mazda MPV. I wasn't optimistic, because of the year and mileage and some electrical problems (it appeared I was headed for donation, as indicated by others on the board and the half-dozen wholesalers or used dealers I called). Still, we got the car washed and I cleaned it as thoroughly as I could before we drove up to the dealership. They took it for a drive, then offered us $200 for it. Maybe they wanted to make sure they had the sale, or the car was in better shape than I thought! LOL

Anyway, you never know what will happen. Thanks again for the advice and good luck to everyone else getting ready to trade in.

I'm trying to get an idea of what the trade in value is for my car. It's a 1998 Grand Prix GTP with all the options except CD player and the better wheels. It has (yikes) 97,500 miles and is in decent shape. No major mechanical issues (the suspension squeeks) and the paint is in good shape (a few chips on the front). The interior is just about perfect (non-smoker).

    I'm in Cleveland, Ohio.

    What can I expect?

Terry, have you ever even seen one of these? I'll post more details after I actually see the car, and I'll ask a $$ figure then... but I wanted to get your brain cells aligned up front.
    Both of them :-)

1975 Porsche 914. White, 66k miles. 2-liter 4cyl Boxer engine. The outside mirrors and the sports (Recaro?) seats are aftermarket, the rest of the car is stock.

Owned by a buddy's neighbor lady two houses down, and she had some sort of shoulder surgery and can't drive stick no more. This was her summer weekend car, bless her soul. Coming out of storage any day now, and I'm gonna have to take a look at it.

    Wadday'all think? -m

    ...... Hey $200 bucks is $200 bucks ..!

Sounds like they had a pretty sharp Used Car guy, they took it for a spin to make sure they wouldn't get "hung" in a $400 loser ..

                Enjoy your new vehicle .!
