......... It "only" has 100k, oop's I mean 98k, oh my and it's a GTP in the pothole capital of the universe ...

               Might this be a 4dr GTP ..?

Or perhaps this is a 2dr GTP ...?

....... These are pretty strong rigs, but like anything else in life it depends on the last owner ..

I would spend the extra $100ish and drop it off at the Nissan God (whoever that might be) in your area and have him take real good look and make sure there is no click click in the 4wd, no hinky stuff under the hood and all in all just a nice look see, this IS for your son - safety first .... $8,900 is a fair price, dealer probably has the $7's in it ...

1992 Ford Taurus Sedan. 110k miles. White, V6 engine, A/C, power locks/windows/mirrors. Damaged by collision between rear bumper and taillight (gap about 3"), drives fine, clean title. Minneapolis/St. Paul.

I am thinking about advertising it in a newspaper. What's a reasonable number to ask?

Sad when they think they need to make a point, sometimes egos get in the way of good business.

We've had a little of both in the past couple weeks, body shop screwed up and put the wrong tranny fluid in the Dodge, but they paid the dealer to flush it and make it right. Thankfully no damage done. They fired the guy who screwed it up too.......Good business.

Then with the Chevy, repair shop screwed up the t-case, so this whole thing is their fault. Owner of the shop won't fess up to the mistake, so we get to eat the $200 bill. Yeah I could sue them, but its not worth it really (or maybe I'm too nice). Bad business and we will just spread the word.

I have a lot of respect for a business that does the right thing. Even though that body shop made a serious mistake I wouldn't hesitate to go back, they did make it right.

I would try to sell it - realizing that the price would be something like $500-1000 max depending on how it ran.

If you donate it and plan on a big tax write-off, it is not worth it. The car is worth no more than $1000 and for most people, that yields a tax benefit of $100-250 IF THEY itemize. Oh by the way, the IRS is looking at such donations as a potential abuse area. Save a couple of hundred and increase your chances of an audit. No thanks.

Good point and folks should be very aware of it, plus they go back the 2 preceding years for a total of 3, so lets hope you didn't throw out all those records ............. ;)

they suspect fraud & can show fraud in which case they can go back further ( No really I seriously thought that 1985 Buick Skylark was worth $15,000. My brother in law's cousin has a friend of a friend who knows a guy at a dealership who said so:-).

Sorry - 2Dr GTP. I'm asking for information because several websites said I could get it here.

I'm not looking for wise-[non-permissible content removed] comments about my car. I know what shape it is in (good) and it has higher miles. BTW, 15K/per year isn't that high - it is 6 1/2 years old. I know it lessens the value about 1K.

Other websites said that there are people on this forum who know what dealers are offering for trade in. That is what I'm looking for.

    Thanks in advance.

yeow.. now thats not very nice. Terry (rroyce) is the one who can give you the info, don't get so defensive, roll with it. Read back a few hundred posts, I think you'll get the picture, he's just adding a bit of life to the board.

    >>> I know it lessens the value about 1K<<<

compared to what? one with 50-60k miles? I think you're going to be suprised.....

Dear experts here, what may be a reasonable asking and "letting go" price on it - on a private sale?
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
"I'm not looking for wise-[non-permissible content removed] comments about my car."

Just because Terry makes a joke or two about french fry invasions, comments like that are not cool, not professional, and are very disrespectful to a man who comes here on his own time, helping folks for free, when he could be running his multi-million dollar business.

Lighten up, or you can feel free to PAY someone for an evaluation, or just play it by ear and hope for the best.

Thanks Terry! Overall very impressed with the dealership, very professional (Milford, CT). Of course, my husband had a little bit of a hard time parting with the keys (LOL) His "baby" -- first car and all. My five-year-old keeps telling him, "Daddy, it's in heaven now!" Thanks again for everyone's advice.

Those so-called wise-[non-permissible content removed] comments are one good reason some of us read this board; well, also to hear updates on Jolie's truck adventures, and to see who wins the pot on when she buys another car/truck :):) Is it May or before Memorial Day ... I forget which now !

aarggh: For someone who wants help on this board, you should be more temperate in your words .... But we are all good people here, so we'll forgive you this time cos you know not what you speak ! Terry, ignore his other wise-[non-permissible content removed] comment and help him out, will ya ?

Terry, please offer a retail/trade-in value for this car. Thanks for the help: jratcliffe, dkuhajda, steine13!

    1988 Buick LeSabre (Maroon interior/exterior)
     - Custom sedan 4D
     - V6 3.8L engine
     - A/T
     - Front wheel drive
     - 110,000 miles
     - A/C
     - Power steering, windows, locks, drivers seat
     - Tilt steering wheel
     - Cassette stereo
     - Zip code: 44139

Kelley Blue Book value of this trade-in is $475, what kind of leeway would I have to look for more...at least the car is worth way more than that to me. Excellent exterior except one spot of rust near front drivers side door lock. Please let me know!! THANKS!! Also, can I negotiate trade-in value?
  • butchbr73butchbr73 Member Posts: 325
    >>> - Zip code: 44139<<<

and that is.......where? Terry doesn't work for the post office!

looks to be in some area in Ohio based upon your profile, can you confirm? near Columbus, Cincy or Cleveland?

as for the value, on a trade-in, most dealers won't want it. you'll be much better off down retail road selling on your own. sounds like a decent car for its age and mileage, it should give someone some trouble-free miles, "maybe" up to a couple of g's selling on your own... as long as everything is in working order, air blows colder than your freezer, doesn't need tires, etc...

Terry, thanks for the info on the 1999.5 Pathfinder I am looking at for my son.....I'll go have the Nissan guru look at it and go from there.

I don't know, I lost count of when I'm supposed to buy a new car. Will have the Dodge paid off by Christmas, so good chance of it then.......oops, I shouldn't give hints.

As for the Chevy......*rolls eyes*.....since it isn't really worth anything, it may hang around at least until it breaks down again and I sell it for parts.

Only reasons I hang around here are the constant razzing and of course Terry's wise [non-permissible content removed] comments.
  • rhs88rhs88 Member Posts: 1
What is a fair retail/trade-in value for this car:

1998 Honda Accord LX, auto, 6 CD changer, 50,000 miles, Dallas area.

As close to mint condition as a six year old can be.

Being new to this board, I didn't realize rroyce is the expert. Too many times I go to boards to get information and get nothing but 'noise'. My comments were unprofessional and frankly, I'm having a bad day. That's not a reason for my poor attitude though.

I belong to other boards that I imagine are much like this one, mixed with humor and information and manned my volunteers (such as myself). For whatever reason, I didn't think this one was one of those. I thought this was an information only board based on the description I got from another site.

My sincerest apologies to Terry and all I have offended.

My 1K for high miles comment was based monstly on the blue book deduction versus average (12K/year). So instead of me being a smart-[non-permissible content removed], I'll ask the question, "How much of a penalty am I going to pay for near 100K miles?"

    Thanks.

need some fast advice. i'm graduating college in may. i planned on trading in my '93 SL2 Saturn with 119K miles in september and buying a new Acura RSX. but fate has come in...

yesterday my mechanic told me i need $600 worth of maintenance done. new transmission, alternator, and battery. it's not driveable without these repairs.

as a college grad, i have LITTLE SAVINGS! i need what little i have for my upcoming move in june.

my question: should i suck up the $600 just to keep the car another 2-3 months when i plan on financing one soon anyway?

my mom says donate it, but really, what will I get, $500 bucks if I'm lucky...NEXT April.

i can take if off the road and do without a car for the next 2-3 months, but will it have any trade-in value in september with a much needed alternator, battery, and transmission? i don't think so.

but donating it drives me up the wall cuz i'm just giving it away. i get nothing now. ii feel that if repairs are made, i should be able to get about $800-1000 for it in trade-in value. is this too optimistic?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,441
If it is an independent repair shop, ask them what they will give you for the car as is. You might be surprised. You may get $600-$800 for it.

    Task,

The advice of getting a repair shop to give you a quote on it is a great idea. I once had a 1990 Chevy Lumina with 170,000 miles on it when it finally slung a rod. $1500 to get it fixed.

I jokingly asked the guy at the shop if he wanted it, and he said "I'll give you $1000.00 for it......"

My reply : "SOLD". Used the grand as a down payment on my next car.

Dang you must be getting a pretty good job out of college to be purchasing an Acura.....Good Luck

  • dbgindydbgindy Member Posts: 351
Do you itemize on your taxes? I'm guessing not. If you don't then you receive no break for donating your vehicle. Even if you do I'm betting that it would mean actual money to you of a lot less then $500.

    Just my .02.

Whoo hoo, you came to the wrong place .! .. My sincerest apologies to Terry and all I have offended.

                 Okay, your forgiven ......

Lets see here, it's in Clevesburg, it's a 4DR GTP and we have almost 100k .....

IF ~ it's clean, looks, drives and feels like 50k, waaay deep in rubber, cold air (remember, summer might be coming) no re-paints, no I bounced it off the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame .. then trade side, in and around the low to mid $3's, "might" "could" see the low low low $4's if it's a nice one and it needs -0-, the miles are killing ya .. if it needs stuff, start deducting ..

Let me know how it goes ...

    ...... Another Ohio Buckeye ...

Right color anywhere, interior works up north and the miles aren't bad .. if it's deep in round things, clean history and the service is 100%, then the dealer probably has the ultra high $15's, mid $16's in it .. these are pretty nice drivers, I would think it might take the super tall $17's, mid $18's to get it home ... whats he asking .?

In the Los Angeles area you can get $2,000.00 off sticker with no problem. I qualify for BOTH the military rebate of $500.00(through my son)and the additional $500.00 loyalty rebate. So if you add it up it comes to....let see $4,500.00 off sticker inc. discounts and rebates. If the Nissan dealer wants $16,999.00 for a used one with about 13,000 miles, but it should go for around $13,000.00 used, if I factor in all rebates of $2,500.00 (if I were to purchase new), In my way of thinking I should be able to get it for $10,500. The question is...this car probably came from an auction...What did the dealer pay? Did the dealer pay too much for the car used since the new ones carry very aggressive rebates and discounts? Interesting..... What should I offer?
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
I am not an expert by any stretch on valuing older cars but I have unloaded a number of older cars in Cleveland and Cincinnati over the years and I have some ideas about this.

First, in Cleveland and vacinity, there are a number of working poor families than can only scrape $1000-1500 together for a vehicle. If your car runs well and looks decent (little rust) and most of the gadgets work, you will have a cash deal very quickly.

Most people will not worry about age as I see many 20 year old Buicks out on the road that are running well.

My wife ran a temp agency in Bedford and she would post a "for sale" sign and sell a car in two days.

The key to making a deal is to be realistic. However, at that price point you want cash IN HAND from anyone.

In the old days (like 20 years ago), your car would be an ideal "going to college car" or first car for a teenager. These days, most parents would die before letting their children buy one of those vehicles.

I would come a lookin' if I still lived in Lakewood.
  • ldbrickerldbricker Member Posts: 140
you should get the same $2500 in rebates off a used one as a new one? You don't say if the used one is an S, LX or EX style however I'm going out on a limb to guess it's an EX with 13k miles. It may or may not have the traction control option. Who knows if it has any aftermarket adds. Based on an Edmunds TMV of $18,400 an asking price of $16,999 isn't insane. Some people would compare the $16,999 to the $20,349 sticker on the new one and jump on the used one. I'm not suggesting that's wise, just that there are buyers out there who operate that way. It also leaves them room to move comfortably for a buyer that's going to price shop them. I think you're not just on a different page but in a different book at $10,500. My .02, other's MMV.

    Terry, Isell,
How about a hypothetical question? I'm considering a new Accord V6 coupe... LXV6 has all I want, but sounds like a real looser come selling time. So now I'm thinking about the EXV6. The LXV6 should naturally depreciate less due to its lower purchase cost... but if nobody wants to buy it...

Estimating 7-yr depreciation based on Edmunds TMV for the '04 coupe & a '97 with 120K mi (4dr since no '97 V6 coupes) is
    LXV6 = $22.1-6.4 = 15.7
    EXV6 = $25.0-7.2 = 17.8 ==> $2.1K higher depr

Could you guys rub your headlight-illuminated crystal ball & imagine the not-so-far away future?!? Would the LXV6 be likely to depreciate unexpectedly high or be un-sellable?

    Thanks! Will

Just north of San Francisco in the wine country. 1997 Sentra GXE 4 door, silver/gray in color. Has AC, power windows, power locks, cruise and cassette. It's a handshaker with 104,000 miles. Supposed to be 1 owner. It was just traded in on Monday at a Honda dealer. I saw it before they could do a clean and detail job and it looked good. No dents or scratches, interior looked good. Runs fine. Worst thing was the tires, they looked about 50%. Wondering what a realistic offer would be. Thanks in advance.

He is asking mid 19k. I'd prefer 16k. Considering he has about a dozen on the lot helps me right? I'll find out soon enough. Thanks for response. Is the T version noticeably different than the luxury model (other than cosmetics)? Best I can tell the suspension is main difference.

It's an A-package (AC, alloys, leather steering wheel, power steering, but no power windows or cruise control). It has 123,000 miles, 5-speed (of course), and a hard top.

Assuming it's extremely clean, which I would expect since it's sitting on a Mazda dealer's lot, how off the reservation is their $5900 asking price? I was hoping for more like $4,000 and then sell the hard top for about $1,000 over at Miata.net to a Spec-racer.

    Thanks for any input Terry!

    ..... Still lookin' huh ..?

Base "A" package (with the HT, kinda weird) with 123 big ones ... In 1990 I was selling these for "around" MSRP plus $2,500 .. if it had a "B" package or a "M" edition, it would roll for MSRP plus $4,000 ..... cute little buggers.!

It depends on the condition of course .. cold air, deep rubber, clutch is strong, super nice paint, hasn't been to the Swirlo'matic car wash 200 times, service is 110%, seats are still stiff, no glued on St. Christophers leaving a big hole in the dash ..

If it's a nice one, the dealer probably paid in and around the $2,5ish range, he might of stepped up and paid "maybe" $3ish for it with the *top* and with spring on it's way to the Mid-West, cuz' their kinda all over the place right now, even with 123k (if it's nice) .. so yeah, $4ish/$4,5ish sounds about right, I have a feeling that $4,9 is going to be the "down the road motors" figure ..... but let me know.

                            Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ "I think" you may have your LX V6 and your EX V6 confused with a LX 4banger or a DX model, or I'm reading this wrong ...?

** Could you guys rub your headlight-illuminated crystal ball & imagine the not-so-far away future?!? ** ...l.o.l....

But anyway, there is about a 2,0/$2,500 difference at trade time with both being V6's, and thats rolling it back to 2000 and that will depend on "when" you trade it and the miles, plus these are Coupe's and not the most in demand depending on the color and the dealers inventory, 4drs sell all day long, coupe's they can sell in a day or they can sell in 60 days, or more, that's the "8 ball" ....

                             Terry.

Terry, wondering what your thoughts are on the 97 Sentra in Post 18654. I'm here in the wine country for a little vacation, but I'm spending time at car lots, not at the vineyards. The daughter's current buggy doesn't like to back up anymore, so here I am shopping. Thanks

...... Hmmm, let me see if I have this right .. your in Northern Cal and you posted me at 9:16am eastern time or 6:16am California time .. and your already stomping the Grapes ..?

Are you sure it's a Nissan ..? .. are you sure it's for your daughter ...?

Anyway, it's a 97 GXE Sentra with a power pack, 105k, we got the handshaker thing going on, you say the silver paint is in good shape, cold breeze (are you sure it's not a pink elephant.?) and the tires might be a little weak ... if it's been cared for, a good history and a better service life it could very easily see 160/170k (properly serviced) sounds like a vehicle that someone might have a quarter in ($2,500) maybe a little more if it's a really nice one .... "in and around" that $3,9ish figure sounds like the Retail Figure going on here ... what are they asking ..?

                       Happy Hangover ...
