Getting a 20 ft. Elan Air Eagle with a vortec/V drive, ballast tanks/tower for the kids and good ski boat for us old folks. Tandem trailer. All in all only 3500 pounds dry weight, but too much for my Odyssey.
I guess I will be doing some detailing this week. I'll let you know how it goes.

....... Great description - thanks.! .. Chattanooga, one of the prettiest area's of the country in the fall .....

It's a 00 with low low miles, we have the leather, we have the cold pack, slider, cd tunes, wheels, a few little scrapes here and there and we have all the books and records - everything was going your way until you mentioned that darn handshaker ... trade side, in and around the ultra high $8's low $9's, "might" "maybe" sneak towards the mid $9's, but I have a feeling the tires and the joystick will hold it back ....... :)

Let me know how it goes ..!

                            Terry.

Thanks Terry! As requested, I'm letting you know about the offers I got on my '00 VW Passat GLS 1.8T w/29.6k miles, etc...

When I was in for an oil change @ the local VW dealer last week, I had them look it over and make me an offer. I guess they found a little bit of damage to the under-carriage, nothing big but said it knocked their offer down a few hundred for a net of $8.5. I asked if they could come up a little higher and the guy said he thought he could get me a little more - but I didn't bother sending him back to his boss since I knew it was way too low for me to accept anyway. Last night I bought a new Honda S2000. They offered me $9.1 for the trade. So, basically, just what you estimated. You were "right on the money" (pun intended) I'm sorry to say - because I wished it had been higher.

Anyhow, I passed on the trade and will sell it myself. Any idea what I should be able to get in a private party sale? Once again, here are the particulars:
    2000 VW Passat
    GLS Sedan, 1.8L Turbo 4-cyl
    5-speed
    Indigo Blue
    Tan Leather Interior
    Heated Front Seats & Mirrors
    Moon Roof
    6-CD Changer
    Alloy Wheels (15")
    Full-Size Spare w/Alloy Wheel
2nd Owner gets half of original 100k miles powertrain warranty.
    Only 29,700 miles
    Location - Chattanooga, TN (37421)

    Thanks again!

2002 Tahoe LS, 35,800 miles, with leather, dual power seats, cassette and CD, rear air and radio controls, 2WD. Good shape. No mechanical or other problems. Kept in garage. I was hit by a car 5 months ago. Repair cost appx $5 to 6K. Hood, fender, bumper, tire, etc replaced. No frame damage. All repaired now.

Carmax only offered 18,500, which seems low. They seemed concerned there might have been frame damage (there was NOT).

    5-Spd Manual

Was thinking Thursday or Friday *IF* the Chevy gets going by then. Otherwise it will be next week.

As for the insurance thing, I've done it before, but not with Ford Motor Credit, it was with GMAC. All I had to do was get a letter of permission and they didn't have a problem with it.

.......... It's hard to say what they "think" they saw .. but a $5/$6,000 repair is a big repair, maybe it was the paintwork, maybe the overspray, could be the way the fenders hung, it's hard to say ...

Probably the best thing you could do is clean it up with a great detail, drop some new rubber on it, create a great Ad and send it down Retail Rd .. have all the paper work ready to *disclose to the next buyer and start at $22,9 *asking* and let it go at the first $21/$22 figure - and don't forget to park the ego if you want to sell it ...

Let me know how it goes ..... :)

                             Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ So your off to Retail Rd huh ..?

Get it to glow in the dark, super nice 5 liner Ad in the biggest paper in your area, all the service stuff hanging from the mirror and $10,900 *asking* and wave goodbye at the first $9,9/$10,5 ....... :) .. the handshaker is no help, but the low miles and the warranty is ...

And dont forget to let me know!

                              Terry.

Homer..I was just there..good luck on the private retail. I had a '00 silver V6, three pedals and 41k on the meter. Problem is the Northeast market is choking on them and the VW cert warranty is attractive to buyers in this price range.
Sent it packing for $9900 acv plus $600 tax credit for the trade- in.
    Btw..it too was replaced by a ragtop..Enjoy.

Grab a copy of the latest Car & Driver (or was it Road & Track), nah, minivans had to be Car & Driver. Honda 1st, Toy 2nd (very close), Nissan 3rd, DC 4th, and Ford way back there.

Don't worry about a couple $k diff. Drive them and buy the one that suits you best.

I'm getting ready to trade a 2002 Chevy Extreme (black in color) and haven't been able to determine a good trade in figure. Can you please help? The truck has a little over 16k miles, power windows and locks, cruise control. My son has installed a "system" with a speaker box behind the front seats; should I remove all that before I try to trade?

Nice car you're trading in there. Very desirable with the extremely rare ABS/side airbags option. Miles are low, and I don't think any of those offers are insulting. That said, this car should be an easy sell if you decide to sell it yourself.

I didn't know you could get a Sienna for under list right now. Of the three vans you mentioned, I'd pick that first followed by the Nissan with its funky center-mount gauge pod, followed by the Chrysler way back in third place. Check out the Odyssey - it doesn't have all the niceties of the new Sienna like the wood-trim steering wheel, but you might like it.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,273
Yes, by all means remove the "system" if you are able to do so cleanly. You can sell the system on eBay, use it in the next vehicle, save it for later, whatever. Either way, it won't add any value to the truck, so it's probably worth your while to take it out.

Akangl, I've been following your humor/horror stories for quite a while...

I OWN a '02 Cav LS. During the warmer weather months, expect to get app. 30-32 mpg's. This is assuming at least 90% highway driving AND going no faster than 65-70 mph. The 2.2 has great low-end torque (for around town) but runs out-of-breath at speeds over 75 mph. My civic, on the other hand, is quite gutless (around town) but loves highway speeds--75plus mph.

    Hope this info helps...Rich

P.S. I enjoy your sarcastic sense of humor VERY MUCH!! You make my evenings...LOL

Buying a car to save gas money while "parking" your brand-new upside-down Explorer...

...that's like trying to borrow yourself rich. Drive the Explorer, keep the speed down to save gas, and take care of your car.

    Time for a little bookkeeping.

I asked some days ago about a no-sale green 107k 99 Camry CE in decent shape w/ 5sp... asking $5,400, Terry said <=$4 wholesale... badda-bing, sold in less than a week.

Called a Lady about a 2000 Prizm, 50+k miles, 3sp auto, white, ex-rental, small dent in hood, good shape otherwise.... asking $6, then asking $5,500, sold the next day... (that's a lot of money, no?)

Neighbor just sold: 99 Trans Am, 55k, no-sale blue, no ram-air, automatic, leather, t-tops, chrome wheels, taken care of.... asking $13, dunno what she got, took her 2-3 weeks to sell. Lotsa calls, but most people wanted, get this, a stick shift.

    Just keepin' tabs... -Mathias

Oh, yeah, gotta have the WS6 (Ram Air, big brakes) and 6-speed -
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Glad to see I'm so well loved, you guys make me smile.

rae52......my mom has a 96 Cavalier that has about 205k on it, she drives the car 1k/week and averages 32-34 mpg. We are still debating on what to do.

Mathais........well, if things go the way I want no money will be coming directly out of my pocket to buy the car. We are dumping the ever troublesome Boomerang (94 Chevy K3500). Parking the Explorer isn't necessarily a bad thing, I'll use it when I need it.....camping trips, fishing trips, stuff like that.

See we've identified a pattern........if we have an SUV we want a car, if we have a car we want an SUV, so we figure why not have both. A cheap car ($3k or less) and the Explorer. Then we also have a pickup truck, best of all worlds.

Insurance on the car will be about $400/year, maintainace is minimal, we do all our own and run Amsoil.....25k drain intervals, so that just leaves tires and other little things.

Or we could just completely lose our minds and go buy a 4wheeler.......lol.

I'm looking at trading in my '97 A4 that currently has 87m miles on it. It's an auto, 1.8T Quattro. It's got heated seats, power everything, ski sack, leather seats, leather wrapped stearing wheel, aftermarket remote starter (though I may remove that). I need to get it detailed...

I'm in Cincinnati, OH and will likely trade it in for an Acura TL or Infiniti FX35.

Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect on trade?

Looking for suggestions regarding trade in value for a 1992 Civic LX 4 dr

    Mileage 135,000
    Auto tranny
    A/C
    Power door locks
    Cassette radio

I am original owner, car is garaged and very well maintained (I do my service at a Honda Dealer), can provide service and repair records for the life of the car.

Car is in very good shape with a few very minor dents (can't see them unless in the right light). BTW, I am located in SW Ohio -- near both Cincinnati and Dayton).
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
Trade in is going to be real low, due to the miles. A clean Civic like this, with records, will do much better on retail road (aka selling it privately).

One of the pros can give you real numbers, so this is just my layman's opinion, having watched a lot of deals go by.

Need feedback on reasonable trade in value for this vehicle:

5 speed, green, clean carfax, 75K, all new tires, needs the following work (dealer estimates in parentheses): a/c (900+), stereo (250), front link (440).

Loved this car but since warranty expired it's killing me with repairs, $1900 in 2004 alone with the above to do.

Suburu dealer (looking at Forester XS), gave me trade in value of $7520 with possible $500 upwards wiggle room.

New to Town Hall. Love the discussion. Thanks.

Thanks. I was wondering, is KBB always high? Even with the repair the dealer did it seems like my car would rate "good" (according to their questionaire). A few years back I had another car that KBB, and others rated at appx $12K, but the dealers would only go as high as $10.5K I believe I had it rated correctly - it was fair to good --- and even fair was $12K. Just curious if these values mean much.

After reading the last few posts, I think we need yet another review/reminder of the preferred 'format' for getting an accurate value appraisal. Please include in your DESCRIPTION:

*year, make, model, trim level, body configuration (e.g., four doors, long wheel base, etc.)
*number of MILES vehicle has travelled (see ODOMETER)!!!
*engine & transmission type and optional equipment (factory or aftermarket)
*color, fabric, and detailed physical condition, in and out
(list work needed or work done and mileage or age of tires)
*city/state (no ZIP codes, this isn't the P.O.)

    Like this:

    96 Chevy Blazer LS four-door 4x4
    97200 miles
4.3 V6, automatic, AM/FM/CD no cassette, power windows, locks, driver's seat, tilt, a/c
    black with gray cloth
exterior OK, minor nicks/scratches, no dents, typical of 8 year-old
interior decent, no rips, one small burn, could use a detailing
needs tires (have 50k on them), 4WD works, runs OK but ABS and Check Engine lights on, power seat inop, rear wiper inop, warm A/C

Terry....whatcha you know about the limited edition Rumble Bee Truck from Dodge? Seen any come through the auction?

I can't find crap here on Edmunds, KBB mentions them only in that certain packages aren't available with the Rumble Bee code, but then doesn't have an entry for the RB code itself, and Dodge's site doesn't have crap either. A search for a forum with info turned up squat. Dodge's web site is woefully incomplete on the subject as well...only some pictures. Ugh.

I've never been much of a 'daredevil' (save some really goofy intoxicated stunts of my youth), and I've known a couple of people killed on motorcyles. Plus, here in Chicago, I've nowhere to store one and they're only usable about half the year.

Once had a motorbike. After a head-on collision with a drunk driver behind a VW, I survived to tell the story (thanks to a sturdy helmet, a quick thinking stranger who witnessed the crash, and modern medicine in hospital - in a coma for 12hrs). I am not about to tempt fate again. EVER. The mere thought of a bike brings back way too many memories. You wanna be a daredevil ? By all means have at it....

......... Thank you very much ...!

It can be overwhelming with the 2nd and 3rd post of: .. is it a LS or a LT .. V8 or a V6 .. auto or stick .. Ohio or Oklahoma, well you know the picture .l.o.l..

                          Thanks,

........ See, there is no way KBB, Nada, Black Book, Edmunds can "size up" damage and how it will affect certain vehicles, it's extremely hard for dealers let alone an info source .l.o.l. .....

Your very best example is auctions ...

There might be 30 different dealers bidding on a certain vehicle, 10 might have spotted the damage and thought: "gheez, if I can grab it for $3,500 less than RWTV than I will run the gamble and hope I sell it", 10 might have thought: "hmm it's only a fender" and 10 might walk away and go to the next lane because they saw it all -or- thought it was worse than it really was .. it's hard to say and it's *impossible* for info sources to put a figure on it with words like "good" "fair" "average" without actually seeing it and that all depends on the vehicle, miles, color, geographic area, time of the year, options, your hair color and what you had for dinner on Tuesday ...

Especially certain imports and especially "high-end" imports and domestics .. have a neighbor accidently run his riding lawnmower down the side of the front fender of a Bimmer 330i and do $650 worth of paint work .. when it's all said and done and they have done a wonderful repair job, the vehicle is probably now worth in and around $2,5/$3,0 less than market, then before that little kiss from John Deere and that will depend on the market and the barometric pressure ........................ :)

5/7 weeks ago they wouldn't been able to "Give" that dude way ... between Nov and April rwd's in Yankee territory is like trying to sell Chicken Pox, folks don't want em', so they either store them like Vette's and Harley's or give them away .....

........ You didn't leave me your address, nor do I know if this is a 4dr or a wagon .....

03 GL with 21k .. miles are kinda tall, it's handshaker (no help there) .. trade side, in and around the mid to high $11's, might get real lucky and find a dealer that might be hungover and drop the low low low low low $12's in it ..... what's your pay-off.? - take all your payments, deduct the tax, then add the residual (thats a ballpark) ......

as in real world saab trade in values.
terry, the saab topic has been pretty active in the last couple weeks.
turned in our leased '01 saab 9-5 se wagon. buyout was 48%(19665). saab got 17100. it had 35.5k when turned in. live in the northeast. immaculate condition, except for one door ding. the front looked brand new, due to the fact that the bumper, fog lights, grille, one headlight was new, and the hood was repainted. the rear bumper cover had been replaced a couple of years ago.
i always took great care of the appearance and had it dressed up for the prom. my wife told me that people at work didn't like to park next to her, because their cars looked crappy compared to hers. the appraiser actually shook my hand as he handed me the inspection report. now she drives a black escape; no rest for the weary. :)

The Chevy should be up and running here soon, we were in town today and decided to take that 98 Cavalier for a drive. Figured we'd check it out before we drug the Chevy to town trying to make a deal.

Anyway, its a pass, driver's side seat back is broken so you get to drive in recline mode, clutch is iffy, and it has a lifter knock. Not worth it if you ask me.

Soooo, we figured we would take a closer look at the 2000 Focus ZX3 he has sitting there. Nice car on first look, got the keys, drove it, was really impressed. VERY nice car, only 26k miles on it, clean inside. BUT.......on closer inspection something was up with the paint on the hood, so I popped the hood and sure enough, the bolts on the pass side fender had been off......looked a little closer, opened the pass side door and UH OH, we found the car that launched the attack on Baghdad. Holy cow, inside of the front door on the car was mangled. I asked if it was a reconstruct and yup, it is. For $5995 I think I'd rather take my chances on a car that hasn't been used in military manuvuers.

Well George, we got some miles going on here, color is good for the "Austin City Limits" (great show) we got new rubber, everything works (of course, it's an Acura) based on your description it's probably worth in and around the high $16's low $17's trade side ... if you cleaned it up with a great detail and dropped a super ad, I bet you would see $18,5/$18,9 down Retail Rd ........

00 SVT Lightning with 32k, hard tonneau cover with the carpet bedliner, tires are just ok and you say it's clean -- that means no runs no hit's no errors, no K-Mart collisions and no paint by numbers ... these lightnings pull some big Jingle, it's whether the dealer will know what this little Bad Boy is all about, miles are low for the year so if it's a nice one, then trade side it should see the ultra high $17's low $18's ... me personally, I would make this dude look like a Prom Queen, run a a superb 5 liner Ad in the Austin paper for $20,900 *asking* and cut it loose for the first $20,0/$20,5 - that should take ya all of 3/4 days, these things do some strong money in the right hands ..

exterior: minor rock chips on hood, remainder excellent

    4 new tires

Miles are kinda tall for an 01, most of the "M" buyers like em' with miles in the 20k region and this one better be clean with no re-paints and deep sneakers and lookin' and driving like 25k ... we have the CPO, so the dealer probably has the high $42 maybe the low $43ish figure in it, might have even fallen down hit his head and have the $44 figure in it ..... $49,0 and some change (or less) takes it home, 44k doesn't put it on Santa's list but I'm sure it's on somebodies list ............ ;) .... whats he asking .?
