Yeah, I posted about that Integra a few (maybe six?) months ago, she didn't pull the trigger then (probably still won't for a month or more), I just needed a ballpark refresher. Thanks for the reply, it looked and sounded just like Terry typed it!

I don't know if you're trying to make a joke... but it WAS Terry who typed it... in January of this year. I just cut&pasted. -m
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
No, I was serious, you fooled me! Ya think values have changed in the last four months? It was only January? I guess so, sorry. You clearly have too much time on your hands, Mathias!
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
"Too much time on your hands" Yeah right.
I just spead-read and type fast...
I read your description and my brain goes.. hmmm integra... cool... chicago's not that far... wants to trade... hmmm ugh it's an automatic.

And then my brain tells me we've been here before...

As far as depreciation; sporty coupes, 4x4s and -- for sure -- convertibles depreciate *hard* once a year, at the end of their respective seasons. Then they're pretty stable until the next year. I'm thinking a 1995 Integra hasn't lost any value since the winter, and I'm thinking (see next post) that a 5-year-old Cherokee 4x4 has done all the depreciating it's gonna do from here until December. Terry will tell me if I'm wrong -m

From second owner, suburbanites with a kid on the way who bought a former "demo or corporate exec car"... okay, quite a difference there... will check the history.

Anyway, haven't seen it yet, but it's a gray over gray 00 Cherokee Sport, 6cyl auto 4x4 with 79k on the clock and the usual accoutrements.

No smokes, no dog, newish tires/exhaust; still a lien on it (local bank at least) and they've got the replacement already... been trying to sell for 3 weeks or so, and are asking $8,700, which strikes me as too much but not outlandish.

Buddy at work bought a 1953 fire engine. And when he was asked, why'd you buy it? He said: "'cuz I didn't have one!"

    Never had a 4x4 yet...
    -Mathias
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
...So I went out and had a look at the above Cherokee. Man, it was like the 80s all over again. Not only arcane, but downright unpleasant... the tippiness and lousy handling of a big van combined with the tight interior of a small Kia... in a 4x4, one might overlook it, but I didn't "like" the feel of the car... so in that sense, it was worth the 45 minutes investment.

Also, it had issues: Previous light rear-ender, bumper poorly repaired -- just cosmetic, though. Light rust EVERYWHERE; edge of the tailgate, pinch welds all around... I thought they had that fixed by '00???

The 4x4 was inoperative, or the indicator light was bad, but at that point, I didn't really care too much anymore. Oil seepage from head gasket (or worse). Other than that, fairly tight car, good engine/transmission, as far as I could tell. I was glad to be back in the Vibe.

But why someone would put a car up for sale in this kind of condition -- and then ask $8,700..??? I sholdn't complain, got a free test drive out of it... I'm thinking it's "worth" the high $4s in its present shape and MAYBE towards $6 on a private sale... but not of my money.

Hey, where else can you get test reports for old sleds!?

I love the Cherokees personally, had an 85 that was a kick to drive. Looked at some 01/02's last summer, they drove the same as my 85 for the most part. I've had 2 Grand Cherokees, they are super nice too. Although I hate the new ones.

Around here its not unusual to see a car for sale in that condition. I looked at an 95 Escort with around 30k on it in 1997, car seemed nice enough, I think they were asking $4000. Anyway, opened the hood and oops, the core support was bent, airbag light was on, lifted the steering wheel cover and oops, no airbag there, it had been cut out after it deployed. Offered them $1500 for the car, they declined. LOL Guess nothing surprises me anymore.

    Terry,
Great site, thanks for the info, On my Pilot it is so obvious that it has had major paint issues that my 4 year old could probably tell. They painted all the insides of the doorframes, right over the vin decals and all the nuts, bolts etc. There is paint all over the inside of the hood again over all the decals. The back hatch doesn'r even come close to level from side to side. There is a ton of overspray and "trash" in the paint (their words) but the shop is supposedly fixing that. They oversprayed onto some of the carpet. There are lines around where they put the back glass in. The pieces that they used to rebuild under the hatch on the inside are still grey colored, next to green it looks more than noticable. What can I do at this point, they are working to fix the mess, but aside from fixing the obvoius overspray and buffung issues, what can be done?

If I were in your shoes, I would run, not walk, to an attorney..... It'll cost you, but probably not as much as what you'll lose on the trade. Good luck and keep us posted.

    Lisa,

The lawyer route is your last step, not your first. After you get the legal beagle, everyone will stop talking to you. Next, it gets expensive.

The problem is, everything is a judgment call -- they fixed the car, they painted the car, they put everything back together, you took it home... now it's up to you to *prove* it's not just a case of buyer's remorse.

Don't get me wrong, it sounds like you wound up with a really crummy repair... and I'm not saying a lawyer is definitely wrong in this whole thing, I'm just saying try it without first... sounds like they're working with you.

First things first: Find out if your state and/or your policy supports diminished-value claims.

Next, get your sled appraised by two or three people who know what they're doing... the used-car managers of large, well-known dealerships in your area would be good.

Take some digital pictures and post them on the web so Terry et al. can look at them and give you an idea what you're up against. This forum is definitely the place for you to get help -- and I'm not talking about myself, I mean the professionals.

THEN you can make a decision on how to proceed. I had a similar experience where the ins. co. wanted to put $6k of repairs into a car worth $8 after the repair, and I took the check and sold the wreck; came out "OK" in the end. And it was mostly due to what I had learned here, and to Terry pointing me in the right direction.

In your situation, the repair is already done... your only avenue is to have it fixed *corrrectly* and pursue a diminished-value claim, if applicable.

    Long-windedly yours,
    -Mathias

Could anyone give me some idea of what we might expect to get as a fair price if we trade-in our XC90 (to a Volvo dealer) at the end of the summer? I know it may seem odd to trade a 2004 vehicle, but it often works out best for us rather than having to ship it back and forth between our residences when we move once a year (we have never owned a vehicle for more than two years).

    What we have is:
    2004 XC90 2.5 AWD
    7-passenger
    Premium and Climate packages
Silver finish, taupe leather, aluminum inserts
    Bi-xenons
    Navigation system
    Reverse warning system

What might that be worth to a dealer as a trade-in, with, say, 25,000 miles and in excellent overall condition?

    Thanks for your assistance.

I interested in getting a 5 speed LS; I drove it at the dealer on Sunday. While I was a little (ok very) rusty at the stick I loved it. What do these go for? It stickered at $17,9.

    Grey
    V-6
    45K miles
    Auto
    Leather
    Good condition
It if certified by Lincoln/mercury for 75k miles or 6 years.

My current car is a '96 Dodge Neon coupe automatic with 103k miles it leaks oil, trans fluid, the A/C, Speedo & gas gauge doesn't work. It runs and paint & interior are in good condition but with all the problems will the Lincoln dealer give me anything for it on a trade in? My friend offered me $300. :) Thanks.

Terry will need your location ( NJ?) and the conditions of the tires to give you his best estimate.

  • dbgindydbgindy Member Posts: 351
Terry will need to know what part of the country you will be trading this in at ( your profile says Spain which could be interesting for the great one:-). I'm also assuming the tires are in great shape. If not Terry needs to know that as well.

Okay what part of the country are you in ( Alabama?)? Terry will need to know that as well as the condition of the tires on your trade.

You people are killing me... :-)

Seriously when asking for a value on your trade in please be as descriptive as possible of all the bells and whistles on your vehicle, what model it is, the condition ( as an impartial 3rd party not you might see it:-),if it comes in 2 or 4 doors which is it, if it's an SUV whether it's 2WD or 4WD and WHERE YOU PARK IT (area location where you reside/are trading it in or selling it).

Terry does a yeomans job on these boards helping people so let's try and and make it as easy on him as possible.

Okay rant over. Nurse I'm ready for my thorzine... :-)

    Lisa,
Also check for paint on the weatherstripping, around the door handles, other black moldings, etc... It ought to drive just like it did before the wreck. If you have a competent and trustworthy Honda dealer, take it to them and explain the driveability problem and let them diagnose and repair it. The body shop doesn't have a clue here. If they don't get the paintwork right this time, tell them you want it fixed/finished/repaired at another shop!

I've been offered $22,000 on a 2002 Honda S2000 18k miles, mint condition. I'd be getting a TL 6-speed with Navigation at $1,000 over invoice, a very good deal by my research. The trade deal came after the TL negotiation.

    Any comments from the experts??

Terry, please give me an estimate of the trade in value of a gray 98 Grand Caravan SE 113K miles, 5dr, AC, CD, rear captains seats, 3.3LV6, remote key, luggage rack, power doors/locks/mirrors. Has had some minor side body damaged repaired. Transmission rebuilt 6 months ago. Garaged indoors in Waverly Ohio. Does having a rebuilt transmission lower its value when you consider that the caravans have a history of tranny troubles?
    Thanks,

Keeping the Maxima to go along with the TL, or consolidating down to 1 car?

Just curious, because I have a similar situation ('99 Max 5 speed and a '01 Miata), for pretty much the same reason IIRC correctly that you got the S2000 (spending the money on a toy instead of replacing a perfectly fine sedan).

Alabama LOL What are you saying??? :)
I'm in Orange County, CA. The neon is striped, no power windows or doorlocks. The only options it does have is an auto and an afteir market cd player. All four tires are less than a month old Dunlop sport A2's. All the belts need changing and the miles are most likely a lot higher than stated since the speedo only works about half the time. I've had this car since I was a teen-ager so the miles are pretty hard.

Thank you for your reply. The car would be traded in probably in the Carolinas, mostly likely the Charlotte area. My profile says Spain as I travel back and forth between offices in Spain and South Carolina. The vehicle in question is totally American-specification though, so I wouldn't think that should complicate the valuation.

Seeing as how Terry is enjoying one of his exended-stay, belly-rub-included, Christian Fundamentalist & Atkins Diet Tent Revivals, allow me to venture a guess.

That minivan -- if it's in nice shape -- could make a nice van for a family on a budget... if all the maintenance was done, the van is spotless, and you invest $200 for semi-decent tires from Sears, you should see the mid-$4s to $5 on the street, and quickly. Just under $5 is a pretty sweet spot in the market, and it's not often you can score a car with leather seats in good shape in that range.

On a trade-in, as-is, maybe $3 if everything is shipshape and Bristol fashion. At least in Atlanta, there ain't no rust.

But I'm not a car dealer, I just play one on Edmunds.

    Hi Terry,

I'm looking at two BMW Z3's with the CPO warranty at a BMW dealer. What are the Retail and Trade-in values?

    1. 2001 BMW Z3 3.0 - 5spd, Premium package, Power top, BMW CD Radio, Cosmos Black / Black Leather, 18,800 miles. Dealer is asking $30K

    2. 2000 BMW Z3 2.3 - 5spd, Harmon-Kardon sound, BMW CD Radio, Titanium Silver / Black leather, 32,000 miles. Dealer is asking $23K

By the way, both cars appear to be in excellent shape (interior and exterior)

    Thanks in advance...

Today my wife was stopped in a line of traffic when her 1997 528iA was rear-ended by an imbecile in a clapped out-is there any other kind?-Cavalier. The brain dead moron tried to swerve to the left and thus nailed the left rear corner of the car. Fortunately, my wife was unhurt but the same cannot be said of the 5er :( The left rear quarter is bucked, the left rear door will barely shut, the bumper cover is ripped, we can't latch the trunk and various trim pieces in the trunk are cracked and broken. Oh yeah, the muffler got clocked as well; the tailpipe is crushed nearly half shut. My shop's initial rough estimate is somewhere north of $7000-and that's before they tear into the car. The car IS miley-104K-but it was in excellent condition: Aspen Silver/Black Leather, Premium Pkg., and DSP Audio. Question: What kind of hit would I take on trade in due to this incident? DV claims are allowed in my state and I plan to recover any and all damages to which I am legally entitled. Thanks for any help you can provide.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
Glad she is okay! Silver paint is really hard to match. Don't accept it if it's not perfect! I have no idea on the DV claim. Sorry!
  • div2div2 Member Posts: 2,580
Thanks for the kind words. My wife is just a little shaken up. I think she was more worried about what I might do to the idiot once I got there...;) She needn't have worried though, since I truly believe that revenge is a dish best served cold-preferably by a process agent.

Am I completely nuts for thinking this....

I am considering trading my Explorer for a Focus (I know I know), $2500 rebate on the Focus plus put $4k down should eat all my neg equity. Would keep my payment the same but drop the loan length from 72 mos to 36 mos.

Better gas mileage, shorter loan term, but a car I would probably not be thrilled with.

Hubby says no way, he wants to keep the Explorer and just drive less. Of course he also wants to take that $4k and buy a truck camper (MEN!!!).

I love my Explorer and am inclined to just keep it and not buy a small car. Of course then I see that I could shorten the loan length and lessen the gas bill......

Cost me $43 to fill up my Explorer on Friday. OUCH

My truck will crest 13k this week, will pack on 1100 miles in 3 days.

    Somebody smack me!!!
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
....getting rid of the Chevy truck and replacing that with a small used car? I understand the desire to save gas and having a shorter loan term, but if this 'opporunity' costs you $4000 cash up front, you're not exactly 'saving' anything, are you?
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Hubby doesn't want another vehicle to maintain, he just hit me with that yesterday. I think what we will end up doing is keeping the Explorer and driving less. I'm learning to combine errands and stay home more. Picking up a mountain bike this week, can use that too.

The Focus was just a fleeting thought, would drop our debt load by $10k, its an attractive thought, but I like my truck......a lot.

The Chevy is still sitting broken down in the yard where it looks like it will remain for the better part of the summer.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
Too bad about that Chevy, sorry! Considering you have kids (right?) and hobbies and a husband, a Focus would likely be a bit cramped as your sole vehicle. Gas savings and $10k debt reduction are quite tempting, I understand your dilemma.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
That car isn't worth a lot more than $7... Buddy of mine bought the twin (black, auto, 108k) last winter & Terry hit it at around $8+ IIRC. Which means that you should get your insurance co. to total it, and if they won't, take the check & sell the wreck to a body shop that has free time.
This is just the very short version, but I think you need to consider it... is there going to be frame work involved? I'd be surprised if there wasn't. That brands the car; has to be declared at every wholesale auction & value drops hard.
Just cuz a 7-year-old bimmer has a huge book don't make it worth that....

                       ===================================

Mathias brings up a great point here .. once you bring out the "big guns", then they bring out the "big guns", most of the time these are just pop guns in a situation like this and "nobody" gets anywhere in a big fat hurry and you lose alot of money, time and especially a Ton of aggravation ....

Right now, you have the ins co on your side and the body shop loves you, so you need to take advantage of a bad situation and recoup as much of this as possible without you losing your cool and them working off your emotions ..... "probably-maybe-hopefully" most of the paint work can be cleaned up with some sanding and buffing, most overspray can be removed, some stuff might have to be re-shot and maybe some parts changed-out ..

That being said, you need to get a Pro in there from a good Honda store, Nissan store, super quality body shop that does high end stuff like Bimmers, Aston Martins, Lexus, Caddys "or just somebody" in the business *that knows their stuff* to give you a little back-up (I noticed no discussion with the words ~ hubby or boy friend in there) .. get the pics, get a list, get prepared .............. :)
