I guess with all that's been going on, I was missed so I'll repost. Thanks
    -------------------------------------------------
Due to gas price shock and my 120 mile/ day commute, I am considering replacing my Jeep Cherokee one year sooner than I originally intended with a Honda Civic coupe. I don't have a car in mind , but I'm looking for something like this:

2002 Honda Civic Coupe LX, 5 SPD, typical Honda LX options, silver black or white high 20's low 30's on miles

I will probably keep the Jeep as a third car because it makes a good hauler and snow vehicle, but here are the spec's anyway:
1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic, white, auto, 4X4 (full time, not part time), cold air, cruise, tires have about 20% tread left, paint still shines (it details real nice looks like 40K miles), but has some scratches on it, interior clean, the only rust is on the driver's door pinch weld ( you have to be looking for it to find it). When parked, drips one drop of oil each night, probably the rear main seal. 136,000 big miles. I live near Newburgh, NY. Thanks in advance.
    --------------------------------------------------

Also, I found these two, and I think I'd like them better. The wife and I will look this week

    2001 Honda Accord LX

No sale Blue, 5 spd, 44000 miles, looks ok from a distance, it is not at a Honda Dealer, its at a local Mom and Pop Chrysler dealer. Might be a good commuter, I can put a lot of miles on it. Asking $11,995.

    1999 Honda Accord LX

Black, Automatic, 35000 miles, haven't looked at it yet. Asking $10,795. Local independent lot.

    Thanks in advance.

You aren't kidding on the V10 thing, dealers don't want 'em.

However, what most people don't realize is that the V10 isn't really worse than a V8. We had a 2001 Ram 2500 5.9L V8 and it was much worse on gas than either of our Ram V10's. Our V10 easily averages 13/14 mpg hwy, 10 towing heavy loads. My dad's Cummins gets 18 hwy empty and 8 towing (we towed with it).

My Explorer gets about 17-19 mpg hwy, but can't tow anything.

I dunno, we like the V10, even if it likes the gas stations more than us.

see the post that is inbetween yours and mine... nice description of that mustang. Would also be helpful to include the condition of interior/body.. any accidents or paintwork done, etc...

Please put a little more info in there, and you may get a little better idea of what its worth. For example, are we talking an automatic or a stick??? big difference in value.

the problem with v10s is percieved hogness. i know that in everyday driving, its not that bad compared to a smaller v8, but when you pack 5 tons behind it, then you cut the mileage by about a third!

terry, maybe you have a better market for these things, i dont know...but id be lucky to get a buy bid AT ALL around here for that.
  • mark156mark156 Member Posts: 1,915
Akangl, when you mentioned about getting a camper trailer, wouldn't it have been better to pull it behind "hubby's" V10 Dodge than your Explorer? I know you have changed your mind on trading the Explorer at the moment but use that Dodge that has only 18K miles!

Well Terry, with the new 911 and the new engagement, I honestly cannot remember the last time I drove my first porsche, my beloved 1997 911. It has been sitting in my garage getting eaten by dust mites..lol Would like to trade it in for a new cayenne but probably just end up going down retail road. Here are the specs in Hotlanta, GA:

    1997 Porsche 911 Cab Tiptronic
    Blk ext/Blk top/Dark Grey interior
    Power Seats
    CD Stereo
Burl Wood Pkg (steering wheel, dash trim, shifter, ebrake handle)
    Brand spanking new 17" tires
    Brand spanking new brakes
Garage Queen - no wrecks, no paintwork, and never driven in rain
    36K miles

What say you oh wise one for trade-in and retail road?
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
We routinely pull 12k behind ours and still manage 8-10 mpg. Its a great truck. We thought it would be horrible being a dually (had never owned one before) but its not bad at all. Thankfully it has a 3.55 rear end which I'm sure helps a lot.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
That would be what we were doing BUT hubby's truck is a regular cab and there's 4 of us. Probably the reason the truck doesn't go many places.

Yup, makes it rough. We aren't going to do anything for a while. Just work on paying off bills. Good thing we have 2 reliable vehicles.

May have to trade the Chevy for a small car since there is going to be 1 to 2 trips a week to town (100 miles away) for the next 7 months.

Not that it really breaks my heart to keep the miles off my Explorer.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,264
Terry: I didn't end up trading in my Miata (still might, but I don't think the dealer is likely to reach my area code), so what do yo think I should list and grab on it down on retail road?

2001, red, base w/spoiler (about 22K MSRP) 5 speed, nice and shiny and clean, recent full service and sneakers, 44,000 miles, in NJ (Phila burbs).

Might just sell now, and buy a replacement 4 seater later in the year (pray for early snow)!

Thanks for the advice. The van was in good mechanical condition, but I did not take it in for an inspection. I did have it detailed, which helped the interior tremedously, but I was not completely happy with the exterior job. I made up some fliers to put in the van windows and referenced the Kelley Blue Book private sale value of $5,340(I know its way too high, but not everyone else does)and had an asking price of $4,940. Someone saw the van while I was at Wal-Mart and called about it the same day. I sold the van for their first offer of $4,500. I probably could ahve got another $100 or so, but felt I was doing pretty good and they had cash (or at least could get cash from the credit union). I also wasted money on an AutoTrader.com ad which generated 1 call from 2000 miles away. This is the 3rd car I've sold myself and I've never used a newspaper ad. I defintely think selling your car yourself is the way to go. Thanks again.

I have seen all the major reference guides debunked here but I have not seen anything about Galves.

Most of the dealers here in the Northeast usually quote trades from Galves and I see they now have a website that you can pay for their service(day,week,month...). They claim to update their info. weekly from the large dealer only auctions. I was wondering if you have any idea if their information is any more accurate than the others because it is updated weekly ?

Do you think it is worth the 5 bucks(money back guarantee to help you) they charge for a one day subscription?
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,264
From my recent visit to a Toyota dealer, it seems like more UC managers are just doing what Terry probably does, which is check on-line for up to date info. Why pay for a book with old data, when you can fire up the Manheim site and see everything that is happening around the country?

Either that, or they go out back and smoke something illegal, then just make up rediculous numbers at random.

Places by me do love to print out KBB retail worksheets to post in the windshield though.

if for dealers only (I thought).

We get those KBB printouts stuck to the side window too. It is usually funny because they are always way too high , but show you saving $200.

    A $6000 spread between trade-in and retail on a car under $20K.

That right there makes me think their prices are garbage.

What would be fair trade-in or retail price for a 2000 Maxima GLE (bought July 2000), about 51,500 miles, has been well-maintained with oil changes every 3 months, new tires about 3 months ago, garage-kept, etc? It's light blue with grey leather interior, excellent condition all around.

I'm getting mid-life convertible lust, would like to get a SAAB 9-3, but don't know if we should keep the Max as a winter car or sell it and use proceeds towards the new one.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 264,504
Saab convertibles make great winter cars!! It has a triple layer top, glass rear window w/defroster and front wheel drive. I wouldn't keep around an extra car worth as much as the Maxima, just as a winter beater, if I were getting a Saab..

My Dad gave me a similar quote to yours ( post 19619). His was on the stock market but it applies to buying and selling of cars as well. " Son, there are bears in the market and there are bulls in the market. There aren't any pigs. Don't get greedy."

  • biancarbiancar Member Posts: 965
Well, we might find a second car handy for other reasons too. I'm just curious what might be a fair value for the Maxima at this point. I'm in the D.C. area, if that makes a difference.
  • turbotorqueturbotorque Member Posts: 45
    Terry,

Could you please run the numbers on the following vehicle:

2002 VW Passat, GLS 1.8T... stick shift. Only options: Monsoon radio, homelink. 34,000 miles, blue anthracite, excellent condition inside.

Minor door ding scratches on the outside (body shop estimates $350 to repair). On that subject, does it make sense to do the repairs before attempting a trade, or does it make sense to simply deduct repair costs in negotiations with the dealer? I mean, do DEALERS fall for the car with a fresh coat of wax routine? (i.e., a $10 car wash yields hundreds more in trade in offer)

    Thanks!
  • turbotorqueturbotorque Member Posts: 45
    as a p.s.

This is a leased vehicle. Current payoff is around $13,800. Lease expires this November, and the residual is around $12,700. I am considering buying it out at the end of the lease... but I am beginning to tire of rowing, and am not particularly interested in being responsible for repairs on a VW turbo engine after the warranty ends.,. and question the market demand for a Passat stick shift with no sunroof. For these reasons, I am considering an early trade in or simply dumping it at the end of the lease.
  • 02electronblue02electronblue Member Posts: 22
I've had a Saab convertible, and a Nissan Maxima. I used the Maxima mostly in the winter. However, during the summer, I regularly used the Maxima, as the Saab spent much of its summer with the dealer. So...my advice is to keep the Maxima and lease the Saab during one of their specials. By the time that 24 or 36 months is up, you'll smile as you turn it back into GMAC. If not, you can always purchase it.

    Terry,

What would you consider a fair trade-in value for a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD in NYC with 45,000 miles. V6 * Dark Blue * Gray Leather * Sunroof. Interior exceptionally clean (how? I have no clue) Body is good..a few light scratches and one minor ding on door from car seat #1. Can get ding fixed for a C-note (is it worth fixing?) While researching I see that asking prices are all over the place.

    Thanks!!

so, what could I get for this puppy (trade / retail)

    2000 Pontiac Montana Extended
    Located in Northern Virginia

7 passenger seating (cloth, no rips, no tears)
    AM/FM CD
    Front/rear A/C
    Rear audio controls
    Power passenger-side slider
Deep red exterior / tan interior
    57,500 miles
    Newish tires, brakes, just serviced
Average condition (nothing a great detail couldn't fix)

We've been pretty happy with this van, other than the two transmissions it received in its first 10,000 miles!!!

Thanks as always for your great insights!!!

I really didn't ask them, but perhaps they thought they were giving me a really good deal on a 4 runner?? BTW the 01 landcruiser with 53k- they had "on sale" for 35K.

Unfortunately, there is only one infiniti dealer in Indy, so I'll probably just wait and see what else comes out that catches my eye later.

We put the Chevy back together today, finally. Took it out for a drive and its doing the same thing it was before.......so we are back at square one.

Now we either pay a shop to figure it out (again) and fix it or sell it for parts.

.......... The Galves book is indiginious to the Far Upper NE area of the country (kinda) .. mostly the dealers will show this to a customer to hit the trade at a lower value, that being said, you will "never" see a dealer at an auction using one (unless he want's to go home with -0-) if he has any brains and has been in the biz longer than 27 minutes then he will be using the Black Book as a reference point ... the word here being *Reference* point - is the vehicle doing more than average book.? is it doing "out" of the book, how much work "could" it need and that will depend on the miles, and what about that crazy color.? 5 speed in a Accord, where's that market.? etc etc etc.com

TMV vs KBB can be off by 50/60% of the time, if you look at the TMV it's waaaay off on particular vehicles and overrates the ones with high miles and clobbers the ones with low miles, none of that makes any sense ...

Nada is good for a starting *asking* price with some room to roam, and that gives the dealer an idea of what the lenders will loan on the vehicle, which is great, because most folks are "flipped" in their trade with little or no money down ...

As far as auctions, Manheim is the largest in the country with probably 100+ auctions from New York to Puerto Rico and everything from DC to Hawaii and they probably run about 12 million vehicles a year I would guess, but there is quite a few others like ABC and the Adessa auctions ..

The point being is, as a rule the dealer needs to be "behind" auction money on a trade (depending on the vehicle), they need to do service, add tires, dent and detail work or add a CPO to make it frontline ready - that's why it's important for me to get ALL the Info like the Location, Color, Options, Miles, Tranny, any Body work, etc on these posts .. the only way for me figure what a vehicles is worth in Cincinnati, is for me to look out the window of that store and think like that dealer, then add or subtract all those items, then calculate the market depending on the time of the year and the barometric pressure ...................... ;)

                               Terry.

    2001 Honda Accord LX Sedan

No sale Blue, 5 spd, 44000 miles, looks ok from a distance, it is not at a Honda Dealer, its at a local Mom and Pop Chrysler dealer. Might be a good commuter, I can put a lot of miles on it. Asking $11,995.

I had found a 99 also, but its been sold.
Then I also saw a Gold 2001 Accord EX sedan, 5spd with leather, 29,400 miles, asking $15,998, at a Honda dealer.

(boy, am I all over the place, maybe I'll staighten my self out soon naahhh :)).Thanks again
