We are going to fix it (again) and just keep it. It ain't worth anything, might as well run it into the ground (at the rate its going that won't take long). With the price of gas hubby can run that diesel out logging and save $200 or so a month in fuel.

At least the truck is paid for, ugh.

    Hi Terry-

Can you please give me a ballpark of what I can expect for my:

    2000 Toyota Celica GT, Red,
    2 door hatchback,
    70,000 miles,
    5 Speed Manual,
    Cruise,
    AC,
    Power locks, windows,
    Moonroof,
    Spoiler,
    Single CD, Cassette,

I'd classify it as in good condition. Nothing major wrong with it. It currently has a broken fog light which I'm not going to fix since I'm trading it in and don't want to spend the $300 to fix it. A few little scratches and dings. Thanks.

    Terry,

Recently had a new baby, so we need larger vehicle. Looking at a Honda Odyssey (yikes...not a minivan!!!).

Anyways, could you give me an idea what to expect on trade-in for a 2002 Jeep Liberty LTD, 4WD. Has 21k miles. Garage kept...outstanding condition..no stains, paint chips, etc. Optional equip includes, Power Seats, Heated Leather Seats, AM/FM/Cassette/CD, Alarm System, Power Heated Ext. Mirrors, Tow Package, Power Moonroof, Privacy Glass, Selec-Trak 4WD system, custom molded Jeep body color running boards. Stone White color. All service records. Tires with at least 50% tread life left.

What should I expect a dealer to offer me for it??

    Thanks for your help!

I was hoping to take it to a few places tomorrow, so it'd be great to have an idea before I head out:

It is a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero GLS Coupe, Black with Grey Leather, sunroof, power everything, V6, upgraded chrome wheels and 20,400 miles. Couple scratches here and there, still looks nice though.

    We're in Northern Virginia/DC/MD market.

Just had steering failure so it has a new system--fiance wants a car with a warranty now so we're looking at a Malibu Maxx.

I'm hoping for close to $7 on trade, but is that pushing it?
  • kmurpkmurp Member Posts: 21
What is it worth? It is on a dealer lot. 8000 miles, Xs with sunroof package, manual transmission, white, in upstate NY. This is a VW dealership if it matters and the car has been sitting there for a few weeks now.

99 Jeeep Cherokee Sport, 4 door, midnight/gray int., 4WD, automatic, ps, pw, pd, am/cass&CD, privacy glass, alloy wheels, 70K miles, a few tiny scratches, otherwise mint. Tires are a year old. No mechancial problems. I'm in NJ.
I'm hoping to trade it in and cover what I owe. I'm considered selling it myself but worry about the process, since I still owe and I don't want hassles after the sale. Suggestions? I'd also like an accurate trade-in and private selling price.

I'm looking at a 6 speed bimmer(beemer?) at a local mom&pop dealer (Orange County, CA) they want $22,950 for it. The books seem to say ~$25.5K retail and $18.7K trade-in. How much do you think I could get it for.

    Mileage 82,482
    Exterior Color Black
    Interior Color Black
    Engine 8 Cylinder Gasoline
    Trans. 6 Speed Manual
    Stereo Compact Disc W/fm/tape

New Wheels & Tiers. New Brakes & Services. Shows great! Very clean interior. CD changer

    Thanks for any help.

2002 Honda Civic Coupe LX, 5 SPD, typical Honda LX options, silver black or white high 20's low 30's on miles

========== Dealers will probably have the ultra high $8's low $9's in a little dude like this, add a this and a that so figure the mid to high $9's when all the blood settles, it's a 2dr and a handshaker so no biggie there, you should be able to grab one for the tall side of the $10's probably less ..........

** 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic, white, auto, 4X4 (full time, not part time), cold air, cruise, tires have about 20% tread left, paint still shines (it details real nice looks like 40K miles), but has some scratches on it, interior clean, the only rust is on the driver's door pinch weld ( you have to be looking for it to find it). When parked, drips one drop of oil each night, probably the rear main seal. 136,000 big miles. I live near Newburgh, NY. Thanks in advance. **

========== The miles are on the MT Everest side, it's a 4x4, cold breeze, auto, weak rubber, leaks a little oil and you say it still looks and feels on the 40k range .. with spring being in NY, I would think a dealer wouldn't be dropping any stiff money on a 4x4 right now, So I would figure the tall $2's, maybe the low low low $3's come trade side .... "If" it's as nice as you say it is, down Retail Rd it goes - super duper ad, great detail, finish any service, spend $150 bucks for some Sears tires and you would be at $5,900 *asking* and drop-kick that dude loose for the first $4,5/$5,5 that hit's the door ........
    -------------------------------------------------
** 2001 Honda Accord LX Sedan
No sale Blue, 5 spd, 44000 miles, looks ok from a distance, it is not at a Honda Dealer, its at a local Mom and Pop Chrysler dealer. Might be a good commuter, I can put a lot of miles on it. Asking $11,995 **

================ Miles are ok for the year, what can I say, it's a 4dr no-sale blue Accord, dealer might have the tall $9's in it, "might" have pounded this one silly with a bad hangover and have the low $10's in it, I would think $10,9/$11,5 would make it go away ......

** Then I also saw a Gold 2001 Accord EX sedan, 5spd with leather, 29,400 miles, asking $15,998, at a Honda dealer **

============ This sounds like a nice one, no miles, right color EX, I have a feeling though it would take at least $14,9 to get it in your driveway .......

** (boy, am I all over the place, maybe I'll straighten my self out soon naahhh :)).Thanks again **

Yep, you are "ALL" over the universe, slow down, your speeding ...!

Hey Terry - it's me again, looking really hard at the new TL. Back in March, I said:

'99 Lexus LS400, black on tan. moonroof, heated seats, CD changer, HID lights, 50% tinted windows. Decent condition, no accidents according to carfax, but paintwork on the right rear door. There is a scratch (about 1") on the right rear quarter panel. Typical stone chips on the front. Clean interior except for a carpet stain under the left rear floor mat. 41k miles, and still running great. Columbus, OH.

    And you said:

Trade side in and around the super high $20,0 figure, will probably see $21 because of the low low miles .. down the land of the Buckeyes is a little street called Retail Rd, finish any service work, a super detail, a Superb 5 liner big Fat Daddy ad in the paper, $24,900 *asking* and off it goes for the first $23,5/$24,5 ..

Are those still good numbers? Prices at the dealers seem to have gone up in the past few months! Here are some pictures and a quick webpage I threw together...

    As always, Thanks.

....... SCal area huh.? ... Good description, Thanks ..... :)

82 Big ones, nice vehicle though .. IF ~ all the service has been done, no oh oh it's Maaco, the dash doesn't lite up like a Christmas tree, the ABS is ok (99/00's had a computer problem) seats look "hovered" in and if we are waaay deep in rubber then the dealer might have the super tall $18's low $19's in it after all the stuff .... $22,9 ..? Eh, he's not trying to kill anyone, but a handshaker even in the land of the beautiful people still won't ring any bells .. $21,5ish would be just about all the crayons in the box ...

Bimmers in California always intrigue me, so let me know ......

......... I bet you guys will be backed up with the the Memorial Tournament in town, I heard they had 35,000 people there today (on a Friday, Wow!) plus you have all those cool lookin' bugs flying around, I bet the players just LOVE that .l.o.l...

Anyway the pics are pretty good, looks nice and you did a great job on the Ad! ... you should shoot at a little lower angle and black the tires out and have your neighbors move their stuff for another shot, other than that it's still a fat daddy dude ....

$24,9 is the right *asking* price and $23,9/$24,5 gets a new owner, I think you will like that new TL, I betcha they will steal a bunch of the "3" and "5" buyers ... you guys have Spring up there so the prices will be moving up on the retail side and the dealers will be "showing" higher than normal trade values .l.o.l. If ya know what I mean .. I see our boy Germain has a few in the Ad, he has a store down here in Florida, whatta putz ..

Let me know how it goes, I love this stuff ............ :)

........ The word is: decapitated ....

01 base with the purty little spoiler, the right color with 44k and new round things ... I'm a little surprised the dealer didn't call you back on this one, I know of 2 dealers in your area that spent $16,5 for 2 - 02 SE's, that means someone is going to pay $19,999 for at least one of them .l.o.l..

$13,900 *asking* and send it off to charm school for the first $12,5/$13,5 ...

                        Let me know ......... :)

The building where I work has about 7000 employees, and I bet half of them were at the Memorial today! Thanks for the advice. I knew the pics weren't great, but I just rushed and took them before the wife got home yesterday since I was blocking the driveway to take them. :-) I think I'll like the TL too, and I think they have probably already stolen some 3 and 5 buyers. Take care, have a good weekend, and thanks.

Offering as trade-in, to the original, dealer my 1999 Toyota Sienna CE, four door (AC, Cruise, Tape, Mats and no more), 39K miles. Much better than average interior/exterior. Trouble free moving parts. Hey! It's a Toyota and everthing works without a peep or sweak.

Bidding on a similar 2004 Sienna CE "plain jane", on their lot 100 miles north of Seattle,
7 pax, no power doors, 2WD.

Reckon I should give $24749 and they should give $10700. But as my GrandDaddy used to say " It's O.K. to dream son, just don't drool on the pillow."

** What would be fair trade-in or retail price for a 2000 Maxima GLE (bought July 2000), about 51,500 miles, has been well-maintained with oil changes every 3 months, new tires about 3 months ago, garage-kept, etc? It's light blue with grey leather interior, excellent condition all around **

=============== The miles are lowish, it's a GLE, we have new rubber, the service is up up to snuff and it's a good color combo anywhere, plus you say it's real nice and clean (that means no KFC invasions, no paint by numbers, no Texas chainsaw murders in the interior) ... trade side, in and around the mid to high $11's, "might" maybe see the low low low $12's depending on the dealer and if the Max needs -0- .. down Retail Rd: superb detail, wonderful Qwalls Ad and $14,495 *asking* and make it look like D-Day at the first $13,5 ....

** I'm getting mid-life convertible lust, would like to get a SAAB 9-3, but don't know if we should keep the Max as a winter car or sell it and use proceeds towards the new one ..... **

============ The only way to get into a Saab is to lease it for El Cheapo' money with little or -0- money down - or purchase one used for less than El Cheapo' money ......

    Terry,
Could you please run the numbers on the following vehicle:
2002 VW Passat, GLS 1.8T... stick shift. Only options: Monsoon radio, homelink. 34,000 miles, blue anthracite, excellent condition inside.
Minor door ding scratches on the outside (body shop estimates $350 to repair). On that subject, does it make sense to do the repairs before attempting a trade, or does it make sense to simply deduct repair costs in negotiations with the dealer? ......

** I mean, do DEALERS fall for the car with a fresh coat of wax routine? (i.e., a $10 car wash yields hundreds more in trade in offer) **

=============== I will never understand this question ...

Have you ever stopped by a friends house that has dirt, sand and dog hair all over the place .? .. have you "tried" to use their bathroom and it's looks like the Taliban was camped out there for the last 2 months, so you decided to wait til' you get to the next BP station down the street.? .. have you ever been at the kitchen table and was afraid to lay your elbows down because the the peanut butter was still stuck since Halloween ..? now the question is: how often have you been back.? ...

Cars are like homes, it's a direct reflection of the owner, dirty cars get dirty money, clean cars get clean money, it's simple. There is a great show on cable I think it's called Curb Appeal(?) .. it's about homeowners that can't sell their homes and they get a makeover ~ it's amazing what happens when you take down those hinky drapes, a little paint, a broom and $500 can do on a $300,000 home ....

The Passat.? .. the miles are fine it's a meat clever and it needs a little work .. trade side you are probably looking at the low to mid $13's if the tires are deep .... me personally, I would keep the driver til' the lease ends, then start fresh with a 05.

Deep red exterior / tan interior
    57,500 miles
    Newish tires, brakes, just serviced
Average condition (nothing a great detail couldn't fix)

    ** Terry,
What would you consider a fair trade-in value for a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD in NYC with 45,000 miles. V6 * Dark Blue * Gray Leather * Sunroof. Interior exceptionally clean (how? I have no clue) Body is good..a few light scratches and one minor ding on door from car seat #1. Can get ding fixed for a C-note (is it worth fixing?) While researching I see that asking prices are all over the place **

================ Good description, thanks ... miles are good for the year, leather, slider, nice interior, color is ok for the area, I would kick the $100 fix unless the dealer is thinkin' $500 .. trade side in NY, in and around the mid to high $10's, maybe the low low low low $11's if it needs -0- glo's in the dark and you never missed a Sunday come to meetin' ...

If your standing, sit down .. if your sitting, lay down.

00 Montana "L", 7 rider, dual breeze, 58 klicks, Newish tires, brakes, just serviced, color is kinda ok .. trade side, in and around the low to mid $6's, "might" "maybe" get a dealer that's been smokin' the funny stuff to drop the low low low low $7's in it, but I have a feeling the mid $6's will just about kill it ......... :)

    Hi Terry:

I've got a 2002 Mazda B4000 4x4 with the 5sp automatic and 43,000 miles. These came pretty well loaded, cruise, air, am/fm cd, keyless with power locks and windows and mirrors. I've got the extended cab with 4 doors, convenience package (sliding rear window, bed liner and bed extender). Its got aluminum wheels and a frame mounted trailer receiver hitch. I've added a Roll & Lock bed cover ($800 +/- new). Truck is in pretty good condition overall. It's a black truck and I've got some scratches from tree limbs but they have been pretty well buffed out and are hard to see. Otherwise, the truck has never been damaged. What do you think I can get on a trade? Private party sale? Don't worry, I'm not expecting a lot.

    Thanks, George.

I think I've found the car I want to replace the TT with. I'm thinking a 2003 Acura CL 3.2 Type S black/black with Nav and a handshaker...round 12-15k miles. I'm gonna try to find one here in TX, but I may have to travel to find one. So 'bout how many Dinar we talkin about, and how often do you see '03 handshakers with nav roll past the auction block?

From what I've seen, these look like a great value...have all the transmission problems caused resale to drop like a rock?

BTW, the Dinar is the new Iraqi currency.

When I was shopping for a TSX in December, the local dealer had two of the CLs still on the showroom floor. Both brand new and both manual shift. The transmission problems were all automatics, I think. Doubt that would have any effect on the manuals. You never know.. might still find some new ones hanging around.

    61k
    Titanium
    Stone Beige Leather
    4WD
    Heated Front/Rear Seats
    6 Disc CD in rear

======== North Carolina boy, huh.? I was just up in Statesville not to long ago ... these are pretty nice SUV's, but unless they have tiny miles they are going to come back and slap ya right upside your head - bun warmers, right color in and out, 4wd (slider.?) ... trade side (I hope your sitting down for this one) you going to be seeing the mid/tall $18's, "maybe" the low low low low low $19's if, you been on time with your payments to the local Baptist church ... dealers are barely paying $21 for the duelly paint, nav, slider and miles in the 20k range .. 61k is not your friend, down Retail Rd it's worth "around" $21.

If this bad boy is "cleaner than the Board of Health and twice as sanitary" needs less than -0- and it's "jam-up and jelly-tight" ... then trade side, in and around the $34/$35ish range, maybe a little more, maybe a little less depending on the dealer ..... down the curvy path to Retail Rd, $41,900 *asking* and kick it to the curb for $39,999/$40,900 ........

Let me know how it goes ..

Hello Terry, curious as to your thoughts on a 1998 Honda Civic.

White EX model, coupe, pl, pw, sunroof, etc. (everything standard on ex model)
Only extra is dealer installed Honda CD player.
87,000 miles, great shape, all scheduled maintenance, no mechanical problems ever. Does have door dings and deep scratch on back bumper.

Looking to trade-in for new Accord V6. Thanks.

    Terry,

How are the touaregs doing these days say v6 vs v8 (I doubt any v10 tdi's have come through yet) loaded up with say 4/6k miles in a good color combo silver/ lt gray. (Or to make a long story short, are touaregs to be leased and not bought much like saabs and jags?) They are starting to grow on me especially the tdi v10, but yikes, 65 large for a vw???

Dealer listed the SC400 for $9900 and sold it within a week for " almost full price"--so even though I thought he gave me a generous trade in allowance--$8500 off his asking price for the O3 CL--he made a quick $1,000. Isn't it great to have everybody win! The car goes as a graduation present to a young man who will love it, the dealer makes money on both transactions and I feel fine about the deal because I love the Acura and think the price was reasonable if not wonderful.

** so it'd be great to have an idea before I head out:
It is a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero GLS Coupe, Black with Grey Leather, sunroof, power everything, V6, upgraded chrome wheels and 20,400 miles. Couple scratches here and there, still looks nice though.
    We're in Northern Virginia/DC/MD market.
Just had steering failure so it has a new system--fiance wants a car with a warranty now so we're looking at a Malibu Maxx.
I'm hoping for close to $7 on trade, but is that pushing it? **

========= Color is good for the area, it's a GLS with all the stuff like the V6, leather, chromee's and the slider, and let's not forget about those loooow miles ... low miles don't guarantee anything, but "Clean" low miles makes a Big difference .. if it's a nice one, clean, deep rubber, no soccer teams in the back seat, no repaints .. then trade side, depending on the dealer in and around the mid to high $6's, you "could" "might" "maybe" get real lucky and see $7, but it's a Coupe and thats going to hold it back ......

Good luck and let me know ...

... ** What is it worth? It is on a dealer lot. 8000 miles, XS with sunroof package, manual transmission, white, in upstate NY. This is a VW dealership if it matters and the car has been sitting there for a few weeks now **

======== Subaru makes some nice vehicles, there reliable, they run forever and they are the masters in the market of the AWD .... this one has 8k, slider and a meat clever, dealer might have the super tall $16's low/mid $17's in it, I would think the $19ish figure would get it a new home, the meat clever holds this one back .....

... ** 99 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4 door, midnight/gray int., 4WD, automatic, ps, pw, pd, am/cass&CD, privacy glass, alloy wheels, 70K miles, a few tiny scratches, otherwise mint. Tires are a year old. No mechanical problems. I'm in NJ.
I'm hoping to trade it in and cover what I owe. I'm considered selling it myself but worry about the process, since I still owe and I don't want hassles after the sale. Suggestions? I'd also like an accurate trade-in and private selling price **

===== #1) call the lender and find out what the "exact" pay-off is ~ #2) when you have them on the line, find out where the closest branch is, the hours and when you can get the new buyer in there and "where" is the title and how fast can they "cough" it up .. shouldn't be a big deal unless your financed with Bubba's bait and loan co. ..

If the tires are deep, the service is 100%, no lumps bumps or terrorist attacks .. then trade side, in and around the mid to high $5's, "might" get a dealer to fall on his sword for the $6ish figure, the miles won't be your friend here (or his) and it will hold it back, so mid $5's .... down the Retail Rd, a glo-in the dark detail, a Big Fat 5 liner Ad in the biggest paper in the area, $7,900 *asking* and drop-kick that dude loose for the first $6,9/$7,5 ......

Happy Hunting and let me know what happens ............... :)

Terry, I'm one of those people that can't stay away from the car lots...

After less then a year I'm considering trading my wife's Odyssey. Which btw, I got for a great price with your guidance. My location is MA.

    Anyway, here are the particulars:

Trade/retail for a 2000 Honda Odyssey EX (so all bells and whistles), 39K miles, dark grn, after market tan leather, good exterior w/minor touched up scratches mainly on the bumpers, 2 sets of new rubber (winter set on factory alloys, touring set on new after market wheels), interior hovered in (really), no nav. I'm second owner, first had a minor parking lot encounter with a post that required some skin work on passenger side, fixed by Honda with no telltale signs that I could ever notice.

Auction/retail for 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, 4WD, white, 22K miles, tan leather, automatic, loaded with every option, including factory hard tonneau cover, bed extender, power moon roof, side rails, looks show room inside and out. Dealer just reduced to 19K cause it's been on the lot toooooo long (over 90 days).

I really miss my old truck and wife really wanted an SUV all along... hence the contemplated swap. What say you oh mystic one...

........ Hmmm, a Vibe huh.? .. living in Michigan along is a $2,000 deduct, then add some paint chips out of the plastice cladding? ..

Remember, that cladding is made out of a super special secret material that is a Carbon and Kevlar combination that's used on secret area's of the Shuttle, then they use a very special coating of stuff that looks, tastes and "is" the same special sauce that's used at the Big Boy Restaurant's in Mathias's area, and that stuff costs about $1,800 an ounce .. so after that super special secret application from a chemist from New Zealand, then it's only worth a buck two-eighty, more or less ........ :)

Don't offer the winter set of wheels and tires with the van unless you have to to close the deal. I'd keep them until winter and then place an ad in the classifieds, you should get more money out of them that way. Lots of Oddy owners out there.

    ..... Handshaker, right ..?

Miles are tall, good color for the Hotlanta area, gotta few love taps here and there and it's a EX ... if we are knee deep in rubber, service is all there, interior hasn't lost that lovin' feelin' .. then trade side, in and around the ultra high $3's low $4's, what holds this one back is the Coupe, handshaker and the miles ............. :(

                     Let me know .............
