    Terry,

Please help with my car. I've been quoted all over the block on this one, and want to see where I really stand:

2000 Audi A8, black on black, regular wheel base, Quattro of course. NJ. Pretty good condition, no paint or accident damage, leather inside is in good shape other than typical 4 year wear.

76,500 miles- I know, the real killer here.

NAV, Parktronic, cd chg, cold weather. Pretty much all of the major options on that model year.

Looking to trade in to Audi to purchase A6 2.7s.

    What should I expect?

    Thanks.

    2002 Mercedes C230 coupe/hatch
    6-speed manual
    36,000 miles
    Black exterior/dark gray cloth interior
No sunroof, power windows, power locks, cruise, CD changer, keyless, wheels .. typical Benz stuff.
Exterior: rear right quarter has been repainted, couple of 6" surface scratches on left quarter, some rock chips on hood, *otherwise* it's clean outside.
Interior: Spotless, non-smoker, no Mcdonalds souveniers

    What's this worth in Atlanta?

Oh yeah ... what about this too?

    1995 Acura Integra LS hatch
    Silver exterior/black cloth interior
    143,000 miles
    Manual transmission
Sunroof, spoiler, power windows, locks, etc
Decent outside but it's been hit and has some possible frame damage up front. Some small scratches and dings throughout.
Interior needs a good cleaning but is smoke free and stain free.

As always, thanks for your time.

    Hi Terry,
Retired Navy Chief here in Norfolk VA. I am going to trade in my 2003 India Blue with black roof/mirrors and bonnet stripes. Sport Seats, Premium Package, 17,660 miles and near perfect condition. The Ford dealer(Looking at getting a Explorer) told me to check KBB and it says 18,100 so I'm assuming thats what he's going to give me for it. The Local Mini Dealer has zero mini's on the lot. Whats your take on the value and what should I expect.
    Thanks
    Bill "Mnidrvr" Holmes
    USN Retired

                      ==========================

Hey Bill, Navy man huh.? thanks for the help.!

Cute little buggers, ain't they.? .. we got the blue/black and the bonnet thing going on, Prem pack, the miles are kind ho-hum and you say it's in nice shape (no hits no runs no errors, right.?) ... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $17's, low low low low $18's, sounds like the Ford dealer is stepping right up for your biz,, cuz' there's no help on the color or the miles, try the import guy and see what he might do, if anything ............ :)

                          Let me know.!

                                    Terry.

My dear husband wants to buy the Benz, drive it for a few months, and then sell it. He wants to use it to see if he *really* wants a G35 or some other RWD car. He actually had plenty of head room but leg room was a bit tight.

The Acura would definitely be a "buy today, hope it sells tomorrow" deal. Although I wouldn't quite classify the Integra as unpleasant or trying so not sure about the whole masochist label :)

I'm almost embarrassed to ask about this one, but here goes:
This is my current commuter (2nd) car ... I'm looking to go back to one car for awhile.
    1994 Ford Thunderbird LX
    4.6L V8
    4 sp Auto
    Green
    Leather, in good condition still
    Automatic Climate Control
    No sunroof
    AC blows cold
some door dings, nothing major, no big dents.
Paint is still good, no oxidation
    129,xxx miles
    Everything works
    All records since new
Newer Yokohama's have about 18K on them.
    Brand new rear rotors
    SF Bay Area
    I'm the 2nd owner:
The previous owner was a aircraft owner, and he took excellent care of the car ... and has records of every oil change, and even records of every fill up!!
What do think it would fetch on a private sale? I think it would make a great car for somebody to drive to BART every day ...

                  ============================

Nothing to be embarrassed about, ya never know what ya got til' you ask ..

In the land of Aaarnold we have a 94 LX T-Bird with 130k, the 'hamas are ok, we have the leather, V8, auto, cold breeze, we have the no-sale green, no rust, records from day one and new stoppers .... if it's nice, clean, no tranny slip, looks/feels/drives like a 98 with 50k, then down Retail Rd $2,495 *asking* and cut it loose for $1,5/$1,900 ... if it's a beater, needs stuff, looks like a bad accident with no eyeballs then you have a $500 driver ......

                                Terry.

Thanks for the service you provide. I am looking to trade my 1999 Honda CRV EX in for a brand new Scion TC. Regarding my car:

Model: Honda CRV EX AWD (no aftermarket parts)
Engine: 2.0l I-4 DOHC MPI 16 valve engine - Automatic transmission
Owners: I am the second owner
    Location: 66046
    Miles: 99,000
Exterior/Interior Color: Green with grey cloth interior

    Features:
AWD, Cruise, Keyless entry, Alum. wheels, power windows, power locks, dual airbags

    Condition:
---The car has been scratched with a key 3/4 the length of the drivers door.
---The plastic covering the switch to toggle the side mirrors is broken. The switch still works, just the plastic cover needs to be replaced.
---Yokohama Touring tires with 8k miles on them
    ---AC blows cold, heat works
    ---Dual Airbags
---All power windows + power locks work fine.
---Car is well maintained (clean interior/exterior) and driven by an adult. The oil changed at 3k miles, the car has never been off-road.
---The car has not had any major damage, clear title, and has not had any service work done since the brakes at 50k. Brakes will be re-done by me this week. It has never been painted.

In the midwest (Kansas, I think), I bet the dealers will step up for that CR-V. Even with 99K big miles on it.. I'll wait for the expert, but that is the way I would bet... In Cincinnati, you can sell ANY CR-V for good money.

    And #21576...

    "Location: 66046"

Whhaa? A zip code is NOT a location...

A location is Lawrence, KS. Let's hope no Jayhawk infestations...

    Hi Terry, et al,

    considering purhcase (used car dealership):

VIN is WBADT63441CF02858, Titanium, 36,000 miles,
Boston area, leather, premium package, cassette.

Listed for 27,900, been on the lot a couple months, started at 29,900.

The CARFAX shows it being originally imported from Argentina w/ 4 miles. This strikes me as odd.

Any thoughts on the asking price and/or the CARFAX would be very helpfull.
  • loven224loven224 Member Posts: 4
Haha. You got me. A Jayhawker here. Sorry about that (not giving the location). I'm not sorry about being a "Beaker"!!

Akangl, I was taking my sister-in-law to lunch and we saw a 2004 Titan V8 parked at the restaurant parking lot with a dealer tag on it. It's a four door, 4x4, black, the MSRP listed for $29,xxx plus another $400 for clear coat added. My S-I-L drives a 2000 Nissan four door truck, white, grey clothe and loves it but it has 93,000 big ones on it now. I told her to go for the Titan, it should be safer than the smaller Nissan.

I think the Titan was an "XE" or "LE", do they have that designation? I'm not sure which one is the top of the line.

Bless me, fellow CCB'ers, for I have sinned. And don't tell the wife.

    Michigan State U electronic classifieds:
"For sale, a 1999 Chevy (Geo) Prizm Lsi
5-spd stick, 133k miles, mostly highway. Engine runs great, but
needs a clutch. Brakes and tires are good. Water pump was replaced
    around 90k.
Has AM/FM Cassette, power locks (but not windows), cruise ctl,
    foldown rear seats. Great mileage."

So the car is silver, generally in good shape, no hits, no leaks, decent
maintenance, dirty interior, driver seat a little flat (220lb owner)...
alloys shod with some decent thread left, AC to freeze your kiwis, and
cruise control. I swear he musta special ordered it to get the LSi with
    crankers, but what the heck.

And yes, the clutch IS shot, definitely needs new wear parts -- a $600 job
as per my mechanic. Maybe the master cyl as well, maybe that's why it went
    bad...
Dealer had offered $700 trade-in against his new Vibe on some GM
Family&Friends deal, that sounds about right.

    Anyway, I offer -- and he accepts -- $1001, $101 down, $900 when I get the
car this weekend. I'll let the pros attack the interior, new clutch, a few
adjustments here and there: $1,800 or so for a daily driver that'll be worth
$2k for as long as it looks good.

Hey Terry remember the wife's old car? I've been driving it since I sold the Lexus last month and I'm sick of it! :-) It's a boat. I wish those '05 TLs would hurry up and show up. Any suggestions for a good winter car for around $5-6k that's practical and fun to drive?

'96 Toyota Avalon XL, beige on tan leather, power moonroof, alloy wheels, alarm system w/ remote start, power doors/windows, antilock brakes, power driver and passenger seats, CD changer, 163k miles (I know). Good condition for the miles and age. leather on the driver's seat is a bit worn. Paint work on front and rear bumpers (Jeep rolled into her car in a parking garage pushing it into the wall, both bumpers) also a few scratches on the rear bumper. (wife parks by feel.) 1" scratch on driver's door. COlumbus OH area.

    http://qwalls.net/images/96avalon.jpg

For a friend at work. Just bought a new '04 TL. Totaled a week later, but the guy who hit him doesn't have enough insurance, so his insurance company wants to fix it. He's fighting it, but wants to know what it's worth in trade if he loses. Black on tan w/ Navigation. the estimate is $25k in damage! Columbus, OH.

    As always - Thanks.

'00-'01 ford focus ZX3...45k-60k miles should do it.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,586
qwalls: Your friend needs to start screaming, and maybe contact an attorney. $25K on a car that invoices for $30,300 brand new? I think after they start adding in a rental car for the 8 weeks or more it will take to fix it, and attorney fees for when he sues for a diminished value claim, and figure out what the salvage value is, they'll total it for him real quick.

Sometimes you just need to be the squeaky wheel. He's looking at a car that will be worth $5K-$10K less after it is fixed. (not the expert)

Thanks Bowke28...I forgot seats 4-5 in decent comfort. "Fun" may have been a bit strong. How about "less boring"? :-) My last winter car was a '93 Accord (sold this year), and the one before that was a '91 Accord.
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
I agree. I think the invoice is more like $32,300 (navigation), but it's still a valid point. He plans to fight it, but is planning for the worst case outcome. Thanks.

OK Terry -- your advice has been spot on and I may have to go visit the Car Buyers Anonymous section next as you helped me with a Mini cooper trade on a new Passat two weeks ago... but I have one more (insane) request...

The trade: 2002 Kia Sedona, 45,500 miles, EX, Leather, Moon Roof, two tone (Green and tan), automatic (of course), wood trim, etc.....

Condition: good except the following -- small ding on passenger side door, a few small paint chips on the front, a small rock hole in the lower level cowling (front -- rock went through it). Cleans up pretty well.

Location: 12054 (just kidding) upstate NY (Albany/Schenectady/Troy).

Sorry for being late to the party here.... Terry helped me out tremendously with his advice a year ago when my wife hit a deer in the Sienna. Same general problem: $8 van, fixed a $7 van, costs $6 to fix, talking round numbers. I took the check from the ins. co. and sold the wreck.
There are salvage auctions that you can sell the wreck at for a fee, but I made a web page instead: http://www.msu.edu/~steine13/charvan.jpg and started calling a couple of those places in my area.

This is what happened, this is what's wrong with the car, I'll sell it cheap, do you know anyone in the bus who might be interested? Thta flushed out an Italian with $1600 cash and a tow dolly.

Similarly, ask the body shop that did the estimate. They may do it during the slow months, stay busy, and sell it later -- that was my plan B and they offered $800.

$25 in body work means the shop can do it for $12 IF they have free time. That's a lot of incentive.

And tell your buddy that you KNOW his car won't be worth $25 AFTER the fix.

    Good luck,
    -Mathias

Thanks Mathias. I don't know that he's going to want to be bothered, and I don't think it would be a viable solution with the higher dollar amounts, car loan, etc., but good information to pass along. He's still hoping to get it totaled at this point...

I thought that the insurance companies would total a car if the repairs equaled or exceeded 75% of the value of the vehicle. I guess not.

I would like to get an idea of what I could expect for a trade in value for a 2004 Subaru Outback wagon with the following:

    5 spd manual
    power drivers set
    heated front seats
    AC
    In dash single CD
    15,700 miles
    exterior and interior are clean
    Dark Blue
few extras: car mats, cargo storage mat, cargo area cover, rear spoiler, rear door handle, bumper guards

I live in the Albany Area of New York.

    Any help is greatly appreciated

Hi, I have a 1995 Navy Blue Ford Explorer XLT with approximately 81,500 miles. The vehicle has power everything including sun roof, leather, power seats with memory, and a self starter kit. In the last year I have replaced the ball joints, serpentine belt, rear brakes and rotors, Emergency brake shoes, pinion seals, shocks, and sway bar bushings. I have a small 12 inch dent above the driver side rear well but otherwise normal wear and tear. I am thinking about trading it in (I am looking at Certified Used Toyota 4 Runners) and expect the Toyota dealership to just auction it off. Any help in what I can expect for the trade-in value would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    "$25,000 ..?!?!!! .... Yikes.!! did I read this right.?"

You read it right. He was t-boned. Not sure if the airbags deployed since he was hit HARD from the side. He's sore, but ok. Says a lot about the safety of the car. It wasn't a lease. :-( I passed your comments (and everyone else's) on to him today, and he was very grateful. Thanks everyone.

"Anyway, back to you .. why spend the extra money.? Keep the Avalon til spring, drive the new TL on the good days, drive the Avalon in the bad weather (which could be 3/4 months .l.o.l.) clean it up in April and get $4/$5ish for it ..... "

$4/$5ish? Really? Cool. Anyway, to answer your question, a very wise man once said "drive what you like", and I don't like the Avalon. :-) I enjoyed driving the Hondas much more. I know your answer makes sense though. I'm just tired of waiting for the TL. October is a long ways off for someone as impatient as I am. :-) I probably should have just bought a 2004 last month, but it makes more sense to wait now.

As usual, thanks for the information. You're awesome.

As always thanks for great service. Lurking to buy as 02 Infiniti I35 or an 02 Maxima, hence the above link, at auction with a family friend car dealer.

His take, maxima GLE at auction in Dallas area currently doing around 15.5K and infiniti from 17.5. He said to wait until late Nov early Dec (tumble weed season sounds right) to get another 1K off. My sister is returning from Germany in Oct and I am driving her 01 Accord right now which eventually I have to relinquish, don't know if I can wait that long.

He offered to let me drive a car from his lot for free until he sees a good deal. Yeah some dealer are that nice, LOL. Didn't asked him, but wonder what will happen if I get in a fender bender on his car?? Does his insurance get a hit or I can claim it on a car that's not under my name. My ins. covers only what I have insured with them, not any car. Thoughts!!
