Terry (and others with experience with these, please feel free to chime in), what do you think about the idea of going to a Public Auto Auction (specifically, State of Illinois in Harvey, IL) to pick up a beater? I'm aware that a potential buyer can't drive the car and likely doesn't have much time to check it out, which is a bit scary, but I think I know what to look for and what to avoid. Do you think the lower prices are typically worth the risk? We're talking about a $300-1500 car. Sorry if I'm asking in the wrong place, but I didn't see any way to open a new topic any more.
Do you **really** want to buy a car that you can't take for a ride first?? I don't know what the rules are in Harvey but the auctions that I have been to in LA geared toward consumers will let you start the car, but not drive it.
I don't know what your time frame is BUT ... the Chicago suburban municipal auctions are coming in September and October (sale of police and other surplus vehicles). You may be able to pick up something for $1000 if you're not too picky. A am looking for a 1992-98 Caprice for a friend ...
Hey Terry... don't want to be a pain, but I am looking at the 2.7 S deals right now and probably need to move or not move in the next day or two. Cars are getting somewhat scarce. Anyway.... Terry, Please help with my car. I've been quoted all over the block on this one, and want to see where I really stand: 2000 Audi A8, black on black, regular wheel base, Quattro of course. NJ. Pretty good condition, no paint or accident damage, leather inside is in good shape other than typical 4 year wear. 76,500 miles- I know, the real killer here. NAV, Parktronic, cd chg, cold weather. Pretty much all of the major options on that model year. Looking to trade in to Audi to A6 2.7s. What should I expect? Thanks.
==========================
I know I know, I'm slow .. always repost your little fingers off if I'm stairing out the window .....
2000 Audi A8 (not a L, right.?) .. nice drivers ... your right, cars are getting more and more scarce and the ones that are waiting for that "special" deal in late Sept/Oct will be holding their ..... breath.
If this dude is nice, clean, ALL the service, waaay deep in rubber, has that babied look, looks/feels/drives like 50k .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $14's, might "maybe" see the low/tall $15's if it's super nice, glows in the dark and needs -0- .. if it's needs stuff, then start deducting, right color ~ wrong miles ..... what figures are you seeing.?
Some friends went to a public auction here in Texas, and they told me that the cars were selling for way more than they normally would at the dealer's auction, and in some cases more than they would if retailed. Is the lower price worth the risk? Depends on how lower, and what the worst case scenario of repairs would be.
This probably ought to go in the CCB board...I'm now at 2 in 2 months. Anyways, I'd like a private party # for my little sled.
'93 Sentra SE-R White with grey interior 5 speed 60k original miles (just turned today!) Nice shape, 1 shallow dent in the driver's door No cruise, no roof, no PW/ no PL - base SE-R only Cold A/C New front brake pads and rotors 5k miles ago Michelins match but need new rubber Hmm... one busted driving light lens and it's missing all 4 center caps, but in great shape otherwise.
What's this worth to the right buyer? Depending in what it's worth I might just keep it. It's been a great little car but now that I'm done with school I wanted a beater truck for yard work. Which brings me to the "did-I-get-taken" part:
'92 Dodge Ram 50 4x4 Reg Cab 5 spd 156k miles Red, original paint, never hit. Still has eyes! Might need a new clutch, or maybe just an adjustment No click-clack in the 4x4 Tires oldish, but not horrible. Probably passes inspection A/C not blowing cold, but it's all there Engine and trans seem solid, no smoke or drips Asking $1900, I paid $1500 cash
OK Terry -- your advice has been spot on and I may have to go visit the Car Buyers Anonymous section next as you helped me with a Mini cooper trade on a new Passat two weeks ago... but I have one more (insane) request...
The trade: 2002 Kia Sedona, 45,500 miles, EX, Leather, Moon Roof, two tone (Green and tan), automatic (of course), wood trim, etc.....
Condition: good except the following -- small ding on passenger side door, a few small paint chips on the front, a small rock hole in the lower level cowling (front -- rock went through it). Cleans up pretty well.
Location: 12054 (just kidding) upstate NY (Albany/Schenectady/Troy).
The dealer offer is $8,500.
We are talking a decent discount on the Passat GLX Wagon so we are going to close on Saturday. Terry, I know Kia's aren't on your favorite car list (and CCB's can drive you crazy). Thanks for all the help you've given!
Hoping not to buy another car for several (I mean 7+) years so I can be drummed out of the local branch of the CCB's
Yeah, if I could rationalize keeping the SE-R I would. But it did its job getting me to and from school and since I can bike to work in 20 minutes and there's 2 yrs worth of yard work I've neglected for my MBA it's time for a little truck. But why is Utah a problem? I bought it in South Carolina and drove it out here...
Stickguy - that's kinda what I thought too. There were two other guys looking at the truck when I showed up. I had cash in hand. I won
I got thinking about this today when a 2004 Malibu passed me and the back was covered in bumper stickers.
What kind of hit does a trade take when it comes in covered in all kinds of bumper stickers?
I would NEVER put one on my truck, no way, not gonna happen. Its a major pet peeve of mine. Any sticker stuck anywhere drives me nuts, just ask my kids.
people put big stickers or decals ON THE PAINT ! You can put these on glass or even chrome, all day, and you won't have any problems. In many cases, if a big sticker is on the paint for an extended period of time, it'll actually pull up the clearcoat, and sometimes the color coat, when removed. Best case scenario is that the sticker comes off clean and leaves an area of unfaded paint that makes the rest of the tailgate look dingy.
When I look at a car that has stickers on the paint, I hit it for a repaint of that area (tailgate/rear hatch/trunk, depending on the type of vehicle).
Put the stickers on the glass if you have to put stickers on!
The college where I teach reqires a sticker on the bumper. I refused and told them it would go on the glass. I pointed out that it was on the back drivers side,om;y about 2 feet up from the bumper, I would think the security folks could see it. Nothing more was said.
And, yeah, I'm one of those people who goes straight home and takes the dealer decal right off....
Turboshadow (who didn't on his last car because the decal is in fact over 20!!!!! decals)
all the time with honor student, political, or college decals right on the paint - those could be placed low on the glass and not be in the line of sight.
Even my wife comments "those stickers are going to take paint off, why would someone put them on the paint?".
She's been married to a car guy for almost 20 years...
Stone White (ext) dark taupe (int)...tupelo, MS Paint still shiny....no problems or blemishes... no mechanical problems..interior in excellent condition

Throw a net on this guy, cuz' he's on a buuuuying Frenzy .......
It's not important what I think, it's the other 15 million people ...
Okay, we have a 02 Sedona EX .. we have 46k, slider, hydes, we have that greenish thing going on, a few rocks here and there .. what can I say, if it's really really nice, deep round things, no K-Mart collisions, service from yesterday, then the $8,5 seems to be the right figure ... puuuurfect 02's with barely 10/15k and are stored by grandma in her special dehumidified sound insulated, anti-uv garage aren't seeing much more than the mid $9's .....
It went by me like I was standing still. I was driving the Titan (which was fully loaded and looking the part) and towing our loaded firewood trailer, was cruising about 55 mph. The Malibu passed me probably doing over 80. I caught a glimpse of a few (was over 100) of the stickers on the back, they were all the peace, no war, no cutting trees type.
I see cars and minivans with bumper stickers all over them, stickers on the inside of the back windows (from kids), just makes me shake my head. There is NO way my kids would even THINK about putting a sticker any where NEAR any of my vehicles. The Focus I would be pissed, the Titan I would be out for blood.
who put stickers for colleges etc. on the inside of the rear window across the rear defogger lines. I wonder how many of them complain about the cruddy car maker's shoddy defroster when they pull the stickers off...
All mine are on the outside EXCEPT for the registration and inspection on the lower left windshield.
Being in NYC, I have to tout The Finest and The Bravest with a nice 9/11 memorial in the rear window, American flags in each upper corner and various FDNY unit shields in the rear side windows.
My wife's Camry is simarly "dressed up", but seeing as she was a survivor of the World Trade Center (escaped from the North tower barely 10 minutes before it collapsed), I don't have a problem with professing my pride and gratitude as well as remembering those who didn't make it out (of which we knew 15).
All these can be easily removed with a widget, the windows scrubbed with Bon Ami and no one's the wiser.
Looking to buy a new Dodge Magnum right before we relocate to Florida (will SOMEONE buy our darn house...PLEASE!?) and the Intrigue will go away - 38900 miles on it now.
Terry, you pegged trade side about $3,5 (IIRC), and since Mom and Dad both have pretty much new Buick Centurys, no need to take it South. Guess when I'm ready, I'll spend the day doing a detail myself, negotiate the best deal I can and THEN spring the Intrigue on them!
Hi Terry, I need your help. 2002 BMW 330i. Black/Black Auto, Sport Package, Premium Package, Chromes, 46000 miles, new rubber. Looks great but just came back from body shop rear ender 4k in damage fixed with new bmw parts, estimate shows 5 hours of frame work. I'm in Los Angeles, CA. I wonder what it would be worth in trade. Thanks, Jeff
You gave me quote back in Feb. I'm hoping you can give me an update.
02 Isuzu Axiom, blond grey. (It's the one that nobody wants to dance with...) 29K miles 2WD Auto S model Massachusetts had $750 bumper repair due to stop sign hockey a small ding on one door. deep rubber, very clean, service up to date.
I've been offered 10K on trade. I.e. Since you're getting a great deal, we can only give you ACV..
Hey Kfydx, Whats wrong with Chromes on a BMW ? Yes, I live in L.A. and BMW wheels look much better (imho) if they are chromed because they dont show break dust and there is nothing worse on a car then dirty wheels. Jeff
Nothing wrong....its just a SoCal thing... They just don't do it here in the Midwest.. I see maybe one BMW every six months with chromes... Of course, I don't see many with 19" rims and slammed either.. I bet those are all over in L.A.
......... Unless the "Stop" sign is still hanging out of the windshield and we have that Bonnie and Clyde interior, then $10,0 seems a little on the light side ..
The miles are kinda low, the rubber is kinda deep and you say it's nice and clean .. so unless the repair was done by Pablo the one armed painter, then it's gotta be worth the super tall $10's low $11's ~ even in the land of the Galves book .................
....... Stickers are fine, knock yourself silly .. but come trade time, they better be "off" the vehicle, dealers always get that "warm and fuzzy" feelin' they're going to get stuck with a repaint .. can we spell - OFF ..
2002 Mercedes C230 coupe/hatch 6-speed manual 36,000 miles Black exterior/dark gray cloth interior No sunroof, power windows, power locks, cruise, CD changer, keyless, wheels .. typical Benz stuff. Exterior: rear right quarter has been repainted, couple of 6" surface scratches on left quarter, some rock chips on hood, *otherwise* it's clean outside. Interior: Spotless, non-smoker, no Mcdonalds souvenirs What's this worth in Atlanta? Oh yeah ... what about this too? 1995 Acura Integra LS hatch Silver exterior/black cloth interior 143,000 miles Manual transmission Sunroof, spoiler, power windows, locks, etc Decent outside but it's been hit and has some possible frame damage up front. Some small scratches and dings throughout. Interior needs a good cleaning but is smoke free and stain free. As always, thanks for your time.

02 "C" class coupe, 36k, handshaker, no slider, rear quarter has the paint by numbers program and it's a black car in Hotlanta with cloth seats ....
Who ordered this one, Jerry Seinfeld.? .. not much going on for this one, no slider, no hydes and it's a handshaker .. dealer might have the low $10's in it, mighta' had a bad night at cards and made a bad bet, then dropped the the low low low low $11's in it ..
These things are like Mary Kay cars, they're hard to sell, I betcha $12,9 would get this one home ............. : /
Thanks for the service you provide. I am looking to trade my 1999 Honda CRV EX in for a brand new Scion TC. Regarding my car: Model: Honda CRV EX AWD (no aftermarket parts) Engine: 2.0l I-4 DOHC MPI 16 valve engine - Automatic transmission Owners: I am the second owner Location: 66046 Miles: 99,000 Exterior/Interior Color: Green with grey cloth interior Features: AWD, Cruise, Keyless entry, Alum. wheels, power windows, power locks, dual airbags Condition: ---The car has been scratched with a key 3/4 the length of the drivers door. ---The plastic covering the switch to toggle the side mirrors is broken. The switch still works, just the plastic cover needs to be replaced. ---Yokohama Touring tires with 8k miles on them ---AC blows cold, heat works ---Dual Airbags ---All power windows + power locks work fine. ---Car is well maintained (clean interior/exterior) and driven by an adult. The oil changed at 3k miles, the car has never been off-road. ---The car has not had any major damage, clear title, and has not had any service work done since the brakes at 50k. Brakes will be re-done by me this week. It has never been painted.

Wow.! .. now there's a description ...!
In Iowa we have a 100k EX AWD, new round things, cold breeze, auto, serviced, getting new stoppers and no Picasso work ....
Even with all the miles (if it's nice) you should be seeing the mid/tall $6's, "maybe" the low low $7's .... if the dealer gets hinky at $3/$4,000 just throw it down Retail Rd, $9,495 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $7,9/$8,9 .......
I'm reposting this here for your perusal and opinion. I realize I'm in the business, but after doing most of my truck evaluations in Texas, anything down there with a ladder frame sells quick unless it's purple with pink polka dots, then it'll take a few weeks...
Asking about the V-10 vs Powerstroke in the truck I'm getting ready to buy - I'll own it 3-4 years, 'til 70-80k, so resale is a factor.
Not to sound naive, by driftracer Aug 27, 2004 (2:58 pm)
especially being in the business, although now a legal career spectator/commentator...but is it THAT bad?
"The books don't mention that a Ford F350 with a V10 is way under book but the exact same vehicle with a powerstroke diesel is worth thousands more than book"
I'm looking at making exactly that choice in an F-350 - the V-10 gets less mileage, and I don't really tow anything serious, I just WANT an F-350 (this is America, you know)...and I'm having a hard time justifying the extra $5500 for the Powerstroke package. With the V-10, I can buy LOTS of gas for $5500, and it would take 5-6 years to even out...and I'm not a fan of the 5.4 in a Super Duty...
Which is the best way to go? The truck won't be abused, from a usage perspective, so do I pay less now (and get the V-10) and get smacked at trade in time, or pony up the silly money and make sure it's all good?
Hi Terry, et al, considering purchase (used car dealership): VIN is WBADT63441CF02858, Titanium, 36,000 miles, Boston area, leather, premium package, cassette. Listed for 27,900, been on the lot a couple months, started at 29,900. The CARFAX shows it being originally imported from Argentina w/ 4 miles. This strikes me as odd. Any thoughts on the asking price and/or the CARFAX would be very helpful.

Hmmm, I don't see the Eva Peron thing, but the BMW computer would, and thats down right now .. so just have it pulled before you buy via the Bimmer store .. I don't see many of these, but a see a few that the originating port site was Canada, Mexico, Venezuela places like that .. as long as they meet *ALL* the US requirements (that means emissions -and- parts) then everything should be fine .....
My only question is the time it's been standing (since January) and run at 3 different auctions -- now that doesn't make it bad, it just makes me "very curious" .. I would have this one checked out reeeal close at BMW, of course don't tell them why, because they can tell you it got shipped on the Titanic .l.o.l.. ..
As far as price is concerned, it's low ...

Hi Terry, I need your help. 2002 BMW 330i. Black/Black Auto, Sport Package, Premium Package, Chromes, 46000 miles, new rubber. Hey Jeff,
Depends ~ and I ain't talkin' about the ones you wear ...
"Lets just say": the accident never happened .. if so, then trade side in and around the super tall $22's, maybe the low/mid $23 range .... it's hard to put a figure on a vehicle that's had a little Shake and Bake, I know guys that can spot them in the dark from 200ft, if they have an Elco then your in big poo poo ... my guess from 2,400 miles away..? the mid/tall $17's, maybe the low $18's, it's hard to see from here .................... ;-)
By the way, kick the chromee's and put the stock wheels back on ........
Wondering about a good retail price on a 2001 Saab 9-5 SE wagon (this would be for my mom.) The details:
'01 Saab 9-5 SE (V6 auto) wagon, black over sand leather. 31,000 miles, pretty much the all the options (ventilated seats are an unknown...I forgot to look.) VERY good condition, and it's currently parked on a VW/Mazda/Pontiac/BMW joint in Nashua, NH.
..... So get yourself a sticker and hang it on the back of the truck thats says: I hate tree's .. that should keep you popular at the next tree hugging meeting .l.o.l..
...... Like I said, it's hard to say without putting an eyeball on it ...
He might have a great parts man and Van Gogh for a painter with one of the best booths money can buy .. or, one of the guys from Saturday Night Live with a spray gun, it becomes a Body shop thing and what the customer will except .........
... anytime your having work done, you need to be there with the parts list at least twice, then you should be watching during, and after the paint for the finish work if you want it right ..... I saw some of the finest paintwork in my life at Sturgis, I mean guys that have the talent, the touch and the equipment, some of these guys spend Thousands just for tank work .. then some spend thousands for, lets just put it this way, less than average ..... it's what the customer will except.
The good: 2002 Camry LE Auto Air AM/FM/CD/Cassette Power win, locks keyless 13000 miles mechanically perfect
The ugly: I 'kissed' a post in a parking garage. I greated small dent/scrape near on the rear passenger side fender. Some metal is exposed. Estimate to repair: $850.
Also, some small scratches that I can buff out. Some scrapes on plastic hub caps.
I will buff the scatches, and replace the two bad hubcaps. Should I fix the dent before trading? Or bring the estimate to show what needs to be done?
....... What are you doing up so early.? .. or are you just getting home..? .l.o.l.....
**Some metal is exposed.**
Sounds like a job for the Dent Wizard, see what he can do .. usually costs $75/$100, at least get their opinion, they should be opening up in about 2hrs .. if not, the exposed part will be a problem.
"I'm reposting this here for your perusal and opinion. The books don't mention that a Ford F350 with a V10 is way under book but the exact same vehicle with a Powerstroke diesel is worth thousands more than book"
"perusal", great, another big word I get to look up .. sorry I missed your post.
I hope your thinkin' 4wd.? ... for yeeears, diesels have been doing the big money and it has nothing to do with gas at $2.00 a gallon either .. what sells these things is the -Longevity-, the tall miles don't bother them like a V10 .. it's nothing for a clean 00 Lariat F350 dsl to pass thru the barn doors with 100/125k and ring the bell at $15/$17+ ....... if our going to keep the miles down, then no problem.
ifn' I was back in Texas, I'd look at a 2WD crew cab dually, but given the weather and parking/small streets/traffic here just NW of the City of Brotherly Love (yeah, right, everyone's rude and tries to run you over...), I plan on a 4x4 Crew Cab SRW short bed.

My friend is getting a new 330Ci Coupe performance package, sport yadda yadda yadda on Euro delivery in a couple months, and needs to get rid of his 1999 M3. Here's the deal....
1999 M3 Black/Black All options (pwr windows, locks, heated seats auto dual zone climate control, leather, roof, cruise, traction control, cd changer, side airbags) 55k miles Manual trans Everything works as it should Tires about halfway Interior is about halfway 'tween mint and average, no flaws to speak of Exterior is slightly above average, only flaw to speak of is a 3" long scratch on the sunroof panel, about the width of a cat claw No known paint by numbers
What's it worth private party and trade? Are '99 M3s impossible to find?
My friend Andreas is zeroing in on his quarry, the elusive V6 Solara...
2001 Solara SE V6 automatic 68k miles, black over tan cloth Power options, remote keyless, CD, sunroof alloys with brand-name tires, not new, not bald spoiler (yech), paint has a coupla small dings, and a rock chip in front was fixed.
At a small independent in K'zoo... he says he needs to make room for 4x4's.. I believe it... can you say lake effect snow?
Anyway, the car was bought at the Nashville auction and originally lived in Mississippi. Andreas plans to have it checked out at the Kalamazoo Toyota dealership -- pull the valve cover, check for sludge -- and take it from there. Clean Carfax but no maint receipts.
The "asking price" is $14, which strikes me as, uh, optimistic. What's the real deal?

Turboshadow (who didn't on his last car because the decal is in fact over 20!!!!! decals)
Even my wife comments "those stickers are going to take paint off, why would someone put them on the paint?".
She's been married to a car guy for almost 20 years...
Paint still shiny....no problems or blemishes...
no mechanical problems..interior in excellent condition
Hoping not to buy another car for several (I mean 7+) years
=============================
Terry.

Thank you
Whats wrong with Chromes on a BMW ? Yes, I live in L.A. and BMW wheels look much better (imho) if they are chromed because they dont show break dust and there is nothing worse on a car then dirty wheels.

The miles are kinda low, the rubber is kinda deep and you say it's nice and clean .. so unless the repair was done by Pablo the one armed painter, then it's gotta be worth the super tall $10's low $11's ~ even in the land of the Galves book .................

Black exterior/dark gray cloth interior
No sunroof, power windows, power locks, cruise, CD changer, keyless, wheels .. typical Benz stuff.
Exterior: rear right quarter has been repainted, couple of 6" surface scratches on left quarter, some rock chips on hood, *otherwise* it's clean outside.
Interior: Spotless, non-smoker, no Mcdonalds souvenirs
What's this worth in Atlanta?
Oh yeah ... what about this too?
1995 Acura Integra LS hatch

Sunroof, spoiler, power windows, locks, etc
Decent outside but it's been hit and has some possible frame damage up front.

Probably $3,900 gets the Acura home .....
Terry.
FYI: We got the to $13,000 on the Benz and coulda had the Acura for $2000 ... guess we missed out on the Integra :.(

Wow.! .. now there's a description ...!

Could you please give me a trade in value for my BMW. I posted the info on #21656.
Thanks
considering purchase (used car dealership):
VIN is WBADT63441CF02858, Titanium, 36,000 miles,
Boston area, leather, premium package, cassette.

Hey Jeff,
Depends ~ and I ain't talkin' about the ones you wear ...
Terry.
Wondering about a good retail price on a 2001 Saab 9-5 SE wagon (this would be for my mom.)
The details:
'01 Saab 9-5 SE (V6 auto) wagon, black over sand leather. 31,000 miles, pretty much the all the options (ventilated seats are an unknown...I forgot to look.) VERY good condition, and it's currently parked on a VW/Mazda/Pontiac/BMW joint in Nashua, NH.
What'd be a fair price? They're asking $22,9XX.
Thanks.
I don't do stickers, never have, never will. I prefer dirt, mud, tree bark/sap, basically stuff that does eventually wash off.
I have officially worked my butt off......12 hours over the past 2 days working on the landing (logging site), I hate trees.
The Titan is now broke in, dirt, tree parts and all.
Terry
Terry.
The good:
2002 Camry LE
Auto
Air
AM/FM/CD/Cassette
Power win, locks
keyless
13000 miles
mechanically perfect
The ugly:
I 'kissed' a post in a parking garage.
**Some metal is exposed.**
Sounds like a job for the Dent Wizard, see what he can do .. usually costs $75/$100, at least get their opinion, they should be opening up in about 2hrs .. if not, the exposed part will be a problem.
Terry.
Terry.

All options (pwr windows, locks, heated seats auto dual zone climate control, leather, roof, cruise, traction control, cd changer, side airbags)
55k miles

Everything works as it should
Tires about halfway
Interior is about halfway 'tween mint and average, no flaws to speak of
Exterior is slightly above average, only flaw to speak of is a 3" long scratch on the sunroof panel, about the width of a cat claw
No known paint by numbers
What's it worth private party and trade? Are '99 M3s impossible to find?

At a small independent in K'zoo... he says he needs to make room for 4x4's.. I believe it... can you say lake effect snow?
Anyway, the car was bought at the Nashville auction and originally lived in Mississippi. Andreas plans to have it checked out at the Kalamazoo Toyota dealership -- pull the valve cover, check for sludge -- and take it from there. Clean Carfax but no maint receipts.
The "asking price" is $14, which strikes me as, uh, optimistic. What's the real deal?
Thanks in advance,
