Dealer was asking for $25,500 - 3 months ago. However, is now asking for $21,970. I am thinking of going in with a check for $20,000 + TTL.
I do not know the packages that it is equipped with. These are the options that I could see when on the dealer lot.
It is definitely going to end up on their front lot. They offered me $12.5K within 5 minutes. I think the 4x4 clinches it since they are hard to get in this area but do well in winters.
I should have tried a private party sale. It was due for smog and registration so that would have been another $200 in the next few weeks.
Would a car dealer consider a profit-sharing deal? I put the car on their lot, agree to a base price and then ask for 35% of what they make on the deal on top of that. This way I do not have to sell the car to a private party and they have another vehicle to sell with zero carrying costs. In a way I am using their sales force to sell my truck; their incremental costs are zero. However, they may not be as motivated to sell it for me versus the other vehicles they have.
Anyway, now the money in the bank and the SUV on their lot; no point in crying over spilt milk.
Terry will need more info to get you an accurate valuation. Please give him location (not zip code), exterior color, interior color and material (cloth or leather), what options the vehicle has (sunroof, cd changer, etc), automatic or manual transmission, tires - new / %tread left, do all 4 match, service all up to date?, etc.
There should be a large minority of dealers in your area that would enjoy selling a Clean low mileage vehicle and going by a percentage after the sale .. the reason why most of these don't pan out is, the owner wants some crazy figure for it and is unreasonable come sale time .. then the dealer, the salesman lose all interest and it becomes a bug catcher.
What would I likely get in trade for a 1999 red Subaru Forester S, AT, all options except leather, AC works fine, new tires, alloy wheels, 75000 miles, clean condition, one or two tiny dings, in Columbus, Ohio?
A co-worker of mine is looking to sell her SUV. What do you think this would bring trade and private party?

Terry, You were right on target awhile back with your price thought on an old but clean taurus. So I gotta go back to the well one more time...
Now for question, on a 97 explorer with 97K on the odometer. Clean truck and all maint. done...
Transmission slipping bad in last two days and dealer sez replace NOW. I agree with that but now who does it is the next question.
Local guy w/ 1 year warranty wants 1800 to replace with rebuilt. Done that before and no problems w/ it.
Dealer wants 1800 to START transmission surgery and we go from up there $$. They want me to trade it.
If I decide that route, do I take KBB wholesale minus the repair??
If I repair, how much can I go back on retail road with an asking price on my rig, with just one parking lot kiss, got the sunroof, 6 disc cd power buckets, boards in the great northeast where ford must have sold 300,000 of the over 400,000 explorers they made THAT year. SOHC has been fine but that warranty from Ford goes away in 3,000 miles too!
I hate to get taken to the wholesale woodshed. I have always sold good clean vehicles privately in the past.
You've already replaced the transmission once on this car, or was that another car the guy worked on? If it's not burning or leaking oil, losing coolant, in good physical condition, I'd pay the local guy $1800 to replace it (unless he's already done it once), hold on for another 6-12 months, and reevaluate.

3 months.? ... the dealer has had this dude for 3 months...? if you live in Fargo North Dakota, three months is way too long, even if it is a handshaker and coupe' .. check the history and the vehicle ...
The miles are low for the year, the color is good anywhere, we have the slider, tunes, hydes, toys and the blinders ... if the rubber is deep, the service is finished, no oh uh it's Maaco, no killer bee's in the interior, no curb rashes, just a clean/nice well maintained Bimmer ..

To clarify, I meant that I went to the same mechanic once before for a pontiac minivan tranny swap and he did a great job. This is the original explorer tranny, but was flushed by the dealership every two years as preventitive measure... LOL
nice looking car, but I wouldn't want to have to change the timing belt on that engine. You can tell the bay was designed for a 4 cylinder.
I was actually in Ewing last Saturday for my daughters soccer game (travel soccer: a wonderful way to see the state). My wife would have loved it if I said I needed to make a detour on the way home to look at a used car ;-)

from what i've read, its got a chain, not a belt, which I consider a big plus in any car. but i know what you mean. Looks like you gotta take out the radiator and grille to do anything in there, but that's been the case with every car I've had in the last 10 years. I had to pull off the grille and bumper to replace the AC condensor in my wife's Pilot a few months ago - an SUV! You'd think you have all kinds of space in there. I think all designers should be forced to wrench on their own cars.

I am thinking of purchasing a pre owned X5 4.4awd(2002) fully loaded with sport pkg, Navigation, moon roof, premium sound, multi compact disc, etc. The car is in mint condition and only has 9000 thousand miles on it. All service records look great, seems like it was owned by a little old man who only drove it to church . The dealer started with 46,900,after 3min got down to 45,500. Does this seem like a good price for a pre owned x5 vehicle that is two years old or should I push harder for him to come down some more.

Nothing out of the ordinary ... but when I look at the pics (maybe I'm seeing them wrong) the drivers side rear quarter looks askew, the trunk lid sits up and the rear drivers door doesn't seem to line-up (or my shorts are too tight) rubber is ok, typical rust for a yankee vehicle, miles are low for the year .. you know the deal, cold breeze, serviced etc, etc,
Dealer might, could have paid the low to mid $2's, when the smoke clears probably hits the table at around that $2,5ish $2,9ish figure .. what can I say.? $3,900 is a good price and $4,5 is all the money in the universe ...... it's a 92, not a 02 ..............

My elderly parents last week purchased a new 2004 Buick LeSabre-Limited(MSRP incl options of $35,110 plus dealer added options & profit of $2,480 for a total sticker of $37,590, priced out on Edmunds.com TMV at $32,485 before dealer added options) & traded a 2002 Buick LeSabre-Custom (24,019 miles clean w/numerous options priced out on Edmunds.com at $11,419 TMV trade-in value). They wrote a check to the dealer for $24,980, including a 72 month ext. warrany for $1,742 & after $3,500 rebate. It looks like to me they overpaid by at least $4,000 even allowing for a reasonable dealer profit. I notified the dealer of my concerns after the sale but they seem unwilling to budge. My parents have bought 4 new cars from this dealer & I feel they took advantage of them. Any suggestions?
I suppose that isn't a common adjective for the Avalon. . .
I grew up with many fond memories of American luxury cars from the 70s, and the Avalon really reminds me of those in its execution. Plus it's reliable. :-)
Guess Terry is swamped with a lot of requests....can anyone else provide some insight?
Any thoughts on what I might get on as trade-in on a... 1997 Saab SE Turbo 4dr hatch Black exterior - paint in glossy with one small scratch on passenger door back logo has come off of hatch...just silver circle now. Cream leather interior in very good shape (few minor cracks in drivers seat) 86,000 miles newer tires all match with good tread Serviced regularly, but don't have all receipts. New clutch and transmission rotors (?) wife burned out the old clutch.
Now the not so good news....air blow cool...but not cold...thinking of having it looked at...check engine light comes on occasionally but not currently on.
$2500 in dealer options - like what, the oh-so-lovely Landau roof? Mop-n-glo? Pinstripe? Assuming these figures are before tax, here's how it breaks down:
Assuming average options for a 2002 LeSabre Limited, TMV is close to $14k, but these things aren't exactly in high demand, so $11.5 might be reasonable. Terry can give a better idea.
TMV on the new LeSabre is $28680 after rebates, less an additional $1500 cash allowance. Value of the dealer-added options is -0- if they're what I described. The value of the extended warranty is also -0- unless it's a GM warranty, either way the price is negotiable. If they only keep their cars two years, they won't need it anyway. See if there's a cancellation clause in the warranty contract, you might be able to get that money back.
Looks like the dealer cleared anywhere from $5k on up on this deal. While that's more profit than average for a car that isn't selling that well, there appears to be no outright fraud going on, just the dealer squeezing every last dime out of the deal, and the customer accepting that deal. What I'm getting at is, there's generally no recourse for buyer's remorse.
>>>Any suggestions?<<<
You could arrange a sit-down with the general manager to address your concerns, but don't get your hopes up. You could also post a synopsis of what happened on dealerrater.com. Let us know what happens!

I'm trying to read this correctly .. $35,110.? is this the original MSRP, or is the $2,480 additional dealer added stuff to get to $37,590 ..?
Anyway .. they should have been able to trade for "around" the $20ish figure (with the rebates) plus the tax and tag, their vehicle was probably worth the high $10's ......
Extended warranties a fine, but on a Buick.? thats like getting a warranty on a Avalon ..... "seems" like $2ish too much plus the warranty profit - who has the title for the 02 ..?
Thanks, Terry! I wanted a big car that would be both reliable and in my budget, and the Avalon fit the bill. Not the most loaded version out there (I have an XL with the package that has power seats, alloys, and keyless), but it has what I want.
My Toyota dealer did try to sell me an extended warranty on the Avalon, but I declined. :-)
I went and checked out that Benz tonight. Other than that exhaust manifold, I couldn't find a spec of rust under or on top of the vehicle. It was just sparkling clean. A little dent by the left-front headlight, and that's it (I think or hope you're seeing those pictures wrong cause if it got smacked, i couldn't tell). Inside was just as good. Everything worked on this car. It obviously spent alot of time sitting in someone's garage. Ran and shifted beautiful and everything. I can easily find more blemishes on my wife's 18-month old vehicle than I could on this Benz. SO.... I pulled the trigger at $3500.
Thanks for your help once again. And thanks to everyone who opinioned in. I think this will serve us much better than that Jag would have.

$3,900 is a good price and $4,5 is all the money in the universe ...... it's a 92, not a 02 ..............

a little help here ....

===================================
In the land of the Buckeyes (who I might add, almost got beat by Marshall) .. we have a 99 Forester S with no hydes, we have 75k, we have the auto thing going on, wheels and new sneakers ... if the service is up to date, no paint by numbers, no soccer Mom interior, then trade side, you should be seeing the super tall the $6's, maybe the low low low $7's ....
Let me know what happens ...

I grew up with many fond memories of American luxury cars from the 70s, and the Avalon really reminds me of those in its execution. Plus it's reliable. :-)
Any thoughts on what I might get on as trade-in on a...
1997 Saab SE Turbo 4dr hatch
Black exterior - paint in glossy with one small scratch on passenger door
back logo has come off of hatch...just silver circle now.
Cream leather interior in very good shape (few minor cracks in drivers seat)
86,000 miles
newer tires all match with good tread
Serviced regularly, but don't have all receipts.
New clutch and transmission rotors (?) wife burned out the old clutch.
Now the not so good news....air blow cool...but not cold...thinking of having it looked at...check engine light comes on occasionally but not currently on.
Is $4500 doable for Tampa Bay area?

I need some more details .....
Terry

Black is beautiful in Chi-town, if it has no repaints, no Swirl o' matic car washes and no Burger King battles .. this one is an 03 with 15,000 semi-tall miles, we have the blinders and you say it's in pretty good shape .... up north, dealers will be getting less than happy with converts this time of the season - down here row boats are popular ..
If it's super nice super clean, seats look hovered in, no curb battles ... trade side, depending on the dealer, in and around the tall $31ish, maybe the low/mid $32ish figure .... whats he trading for.?

If, the service is from yesterday, no I bounced off my sisters campaign bus, no chicken being raised in the back .. then trade side, in and around the mid/high $8's, might get a dealer to drop the low low low $9's in it, but I have a feelin' the Galves book will hold this one back in the Mass area ........
