2001 Subaru Forester S (Premium)
4dr/wagon
2.5l, AWD, Auto
65000 miles (a few hundred under, but could hit it by trade-in time)
Silverthorn Metallic / Grey cloth interior
All the S(premium) goodies: Heated seats, side airbags, 6-cd, huge moonroof, heated mirrors/windshield, alarm. Plus sport grille, hood deflector, and aftermarket shop window tint.
Condition is good, with some minor paint scuffs on the rear bumper cover and the usual highway chips in the front cover. Tint is peeling on the driver window (I could have the shop remove the front window tints if that'd improve the value)
Tires replaced with Turanzas about 18-20k ago.
Regularly maintained, switched to synch oil at 10k.
Thanks!

Thumper - shall I ask how you got that name.?
I was at my buddies store yesterday and he has the new 05 LL Bean Outback wagons in stock -- tha tha tha tha thirty three grand range *Yikes* those dudes have gotten to be expensive .........
Anyway .... in the land of Mount St. Helens (I have a sneaky feeling it could be worse than a hurricane) .. we have a 01 Forester "S" with 65 klicks, we have the prem pack, auto, good color, service is kind of groovy, slider and we have the bun warmers ... if it looks and feels like 25k, no repaints, then trade side: in and around the super tall $10's, low $11's, maybe "might" drift into the mid/tall $11's because of the area - of course your going to need vehicles like this to run like hell if that dude blows it's cork ................
Terry.
What do the (other) experts say on this? kyfdx? driftracer?
I've seen more than one or two of the Vibe's and Matrix's being given the proverbial cigarette and a blindfold with less than 20K miles on them... Are they a little off-center somewhere?
Mike
Hey Terry, you should start chaging a buck a piece for each quote you do. You would be a multi-thousandaire by now...
Here's what I need trade-in/private party pricing for (will that cost 2 bucks?)
98 chevy s10 LS
v6 (not High Output)
5 speed manual
ext cab, third door
bed liner, bug deflector, diamond plate tool box
am/fm cassette
white with tan interior
102k miles, small rocks chips in bumper and hood
Never wrecked and average interior
regular maintenance, 100k tune-up done at 80k
50% on tires
With this long list of specs, I hope I didn't forget anything obvious. Also, where should I send the 2 dollars? I'm in Vegas so can I send you one of those recipts that the slot machines pay out with nowdays?
Thanks, Steve
1999 Honda Odyssey EX
72,000 Miles
Color:Mesa Beige
Condition: Interior is very clean, however, I was hit on the right front side in 2001 (in a supermarket parking lot of all places). The car had major frame damage and needed the right frame rail replaced. The work was done professionally and the car runs well (no alignment problems).
Tires have 8000 miles
Brakes are brand new
All maintenance was done by Honda dealer.
The driver door also has a deep`10 inch scratch that I repaired with touch up paint.
My question is what is the van worth as a trade or private party sale after this type of damage (even if repaired well) and does having the door scratch repaired make any difference.
Thanks for any input
1996 Honda Accord
Wagon LX
2.3 lt 4 cylinder auto
FWD
170,000
Dark Green/Gray
Auto Start/Roof Rack

-dings all over
-rear bumper scratched (Shopping cart maybe??)
-front bumper scratched
Tires are 99% (Put on a week ago from honda)
Brakes Ok
Needs at 180k: Timingbelt, Fuel Pump, Water Pump, and some other stuff
Clean Title from what i know of, my father owned it since new in 96
That's a guesstimate. I know it hadn't been around long because I had been checking autotrader.com several times a week looking for a truck....I called on it as soon as I found it, and it had been 3-4 days since I last checked...
So it's lost nearly a grand in a few months... I believe it; >$10k is a difficult place to be for any economy car.
fensterlips: That's probably what I'll do, ditch the Prizm... I had an offer already from a buddy at work, so I'd make a couple hundred and have driven 2,000 free miles... it's just the perfect car for playing bumper cars on campus, and the insurance is less than $1/day.
If I'm typing slowly this morning, that's because an old friend from grad school came through town, and a few of us went out on the town <hic>. It's good to have a bicycle. Age and wisdom prevailed; I passed on the last round, and I'm feeling fine... shoulda learned that trick years ago. Anyway...
2002 Honda CRV EX, 35k, silver. AWD, of course.
Five speed manual (he was told by his dealer it's a $1,500 deduct at the retail level.)
Good shape, no runs no hits no errors, and he'll spend some bucks to get it detailed.
What's it worth in the land of the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN)?
Thanks in advance,

**You would be a multi-thousandaire by now...** ..l.o.l.....
hey Steve - cut and pasting is a good thing .. this way I don't have to stop and scroll all over the place and look for a post that was dropped 2/3 days ago ...
Vegas vehicle.? .. we have a 2WD(?) 98 "Cheby" S10 LS, cold breeze I hope, meat clever, ecab with the 3rd door, oooh ~ diamond plate tool box, liner, right color for the area, miles ain't (cough) bad for the year, no holidays spent at the body shop and the tires are ok, maybe ..... if it's as nice as you think it is, then trade side, in and around the super tall $2's, low/mid $3's .. the miles and the meat clever will hold this one back - down Retail Rd: great visit at the detail shop, a wonderful Ad in the Big paper, $5,900 *asking* and sell it off to one of those show girls for $4,5/$5,5 .... if it needs tuff, start deducting.
Interesting, I was reading an article in Forbes about the "paper chits" .. and they feel the casino's will make another $30 mill a year because folks think of it as paper - not money and bunches will get lost, dropped or washed .l.o.l...
Terry.
Great hospital, they even have one down here .....
This should be interesting, miles are ok, it's an EX and yes, the handshaker will slow it down, lets see what they hit this dude at, cuz' they pay "all" the money, all the peso's, all the cookies for them in the land of the Mayo (MN) at the auctions .. if it's a nice one, knee deep, blah blah blah, I'm thinkin' $15/$15,5 - even with that movin' around thing between the seats ... retail money.? $17,9ish ....
even those particles will sound LOUD today .l.o.l......
Terry.
I think I can confidently claim that above all else, it is the auction prices that determine trade in value. The bottom line is that everyone gives you the same response similar to "I was able to get one last week for $$$, that's all it has in it..." or "Several of these went for $$$ ...". When a dealer makes you an offer, it's not based on what he can get for it retail, but what he can get for it wholesale if he has to unload it. As much as we want to believe that we have this one of a kind vehicle, there are plenty of others out there, and dealers are probably more adament about not paying more for a trade, than buyers are on spending more than they have to on a purchase.
That being said, I'm still on the fence about what I'm going to do. I'd like to sell it myself, but the online sites are flooded with dealer ads. Does anybody actually look at private party sales for a $20k plus vehicle? Waiting is never a good option when selling a depreciating commodity.
I posted this while back, but took my time buying a new truck, so only now finally getting around to sending the old family truckster down Retail Road...looking to confirm $#'s

Parked in Northern NJ.
Original owner 99 Ford Explorer XLT, 4 door, 5.0 V8, all wheel drive, 56,000 miles, white exterior, gray cloth, basic XLT power everything with the upgrade radio with premium sound and electrochromic rear view the only options. Clean and shiny in and out. No hits no errors. Tires are Michelins about 50% worn. I was going to replace these before selling but recently doing $1500 of steering rack replacement, front rotors, pads and ABS work has taken some of my incentive away on spending any more money on this lame-duck truck.
I'm thinking an ad in the Daily Rag for $9750, and sending it off for $9000-9500ish? Am I in the ballpark? I know these are a dime a dozen, but it does have light miles and still looks good for 6 years old.
TIA

I'm looking to trade in my Jetta Wolfsburg. It's a 2001, 1.8T engine. It's in excellent condition with 47,000 miles, dark blue in color with tan interior. It includes power windows, locks, sunroof, Monsoon sound, 16" BBS wheels, sport suspension, cd. Also, I just put brand new tires on the Wolf on Friday. All of the maintenance is up to date and the brakes have over 50% of life left...What am I looking at here?
-----------------------------------------------
People look, but it takes a bit longer, and you are limited to people who have the money or can get a loan themselves without too much trouble. My $2500-$3500 cars are typically gone in a week or less. It took me 3 weeks to sell my $15k Explorer about 3 years ago, and it took me 5 weeks this past July to sell my '99 Lexus LS400 for $23k+ (asking price was $24.9k). I used autotrader.com. The key is listening to Terry and pricing it right. :-)
I'd like to sell it myself, but the online sites are flooded with dealer ads. Does anybody actually look at private party sales for a $20k plus vehicle? Waiting is never a good option when selling a depreciating commodity.
================================
These are nice vehicles and in demand - especially an "S" with itsy bitsy miles and the right color .... private parties look for nice vehicles "all" the time, but like anything else in life they are lookin' for the best for the least, thats why pricing is very important ...
What most people don't understand, is "how" to price items and how to advertise .. thats what keeps Realtors in business, they don't really know more than anyone else, but some folks will pay them $10,000/$15,000/$25,000+ to sell their home (which I will never understand) .. if you price a home, a boat or the vehicle in your driveway correctly, you shouldn't have any problems, *IF you do it right and spend a few bucks .. I post this all the time, but I bet few even pay attention, they're lazy .......
1.) Find a detailer in the area with a great reputation and a fair price -- most folks run it thru the car wash and clean out the ashtrays and thinks it looks good, until it rains the next day and it goes back to looking like it did, plus it smells, then they wonder why it won't sell - cost: $125ish ..
2.) Get a nice looking, "well worded" 5/6 liner Ad in the biggest paper in the area and have it run for 10/14 days, minimum -- most folks will drop one with the Auto Trader, but most papers work faster .. some use the local suburb paper, the Church directory or maybe just throw a sign on it and drive around, thats fine for a vehicle that is older and you know the price will kinda "hover" for the next 5/6 months and your not in any hurry, plus most folks only advertise for 3/4 days, then get frustrated when it doesn't sell right away - cost: $75ish ..
3.) If you live in an area with a large commute, you leave early and get home late and the car gets all dirty and it's hard to show .. if so, (after the great Ad and detail gets started) then rent a vehicle for a week or two, so the one thats "For Sale" can be seen in a convenient and clean spot at most times depending on the situation - dealers and rental agents have vehicles for $69 a week, if you shop around (no Audi A8's please) - cost: $160ish ..
4.) Pricing will make or break the readers attention, let alone any calls .. thats why pricing (especially with private sellers) is most important, they word "firm" means: I don't negotiate and I'm a snob .. most privates sellers price their vehicles waay too much, they don't take trades and most are probably inside of a few bucks of the dealer that is 5 minutes away and he "will" negotiate, folks don't seem as comfortable with the privates as they do with the Dealer market .. it's easier to negotiate a few hundred or even a thousand or so, If the vehicle is priced *right* .. but when you stick $2,500 or $3,000 over the market, then you will be sucking air and it's time for a visit to Home Depot for some potting soil .................. ;^)
5.) In your case, $24,900 *asking* and $23,9/$24,5 gets a new owner ~ priceless .....
Let me know.!
Terry.
Amen.
Nobody HAS to buy your stuff, you have to make them WANT to.
I don't disagree with "the auctions set the price", but the auction price is set by what vehicles can be sold to the general public... it's a ring-around-the-rosy interconnected feedback loop. To use a technical term :-) And as a dealer, you better know what sells and what doesn't.
Speaking of the market...
2000 Ranger XL E-Cab, white, 74k miles.
Advertised for $5,700 w/ "V6" and 5sp stick (yay!)
AC and cruise, BUT no pwr nuthin, only two doors.
Cheapish cloth seats but split bench, bedliner, and come to find out, it's the 2.5 l FOUR CYL with the dual ignition. Ooh doggy. The Driver side frt fender has been off and the hood has a big buff spot in it. Also a small scrape on the Pass door edge with a touch of rust and a bubble starting. Seats are a little dirty, but the oil and coolant are clean. Second owner, new truck is bought, this one doesn't have plates (WHAT THE HECK DO THESE PEOPLE USE THEIR BRAINS FOR -- TO KEEP THE EARS FROM TOUCHING???).
Ahem.
It buzzes, typical 4cyl, it's actually kinda OK, no smells, nonsmoker, AC will cool beef, tires are new, brakes are new-ish. Stick shift seems ok, my mechanic tells me they grenade occasionally; the autos are better. Go figure.
I'm thinking it's too much of a rat for me, but I'll use it as an exercise... Say, $3600 wholesale...?
TIA
-Mathias
EDIT: BTW, I do appreciate the recent advice, and I think the F-150 or E-150 are indeed the most bang for the buck. But there isn't anything in the paper right now, plus the Ranger is a real handy size for our needs and our space constraints...

Good color, good miles, good V8, good options and your in competition with 151,279 other ones that are right down the street from you ... true, the miles are low for the year - true, it's a favored color - true, it has some nice stuff ... but don't get too carried away, it's still a 7 year old Exploder .. you can try $9,750 *asking* and see what pops at $9,0/$9,5 .. but I have a feeling when it's all said and done in 2/3 weeks you might be doing the $8,5ish figure ..... hopefully in your case, Cash is stronger than pride ...........

Low number.? .. how do you figure it's a low number.? .. invoice was "around" $28,0 and believe it or not, vehicles don't "ah-pre-she-ate" ........ you can't use the books, because the books don't buy vehicles, also $23 is a wholesale figure, not a retail figure and thats what dealers put in vehicles ...
If you want more $$, start-up a beautiful Ad and travel down Retail Rd - $25,900 *asking* and cut that baby loose for the first $24,5/$25,5 ... I bet it see's $24,9 .. how bad is that.?

Thx. for the feedback. Mrs. Racer63 the household CFO was appalled that I was_asking_only_$9750 ......I figured I'm on the slightly high side, but there seems to be not a lot of lo-milers around, so I thought, hey, lets swing at the first pitch. Ad #1 at that price goes this Thursday into a chain of weeklies with a county-wide auto section. After a couple of weeks of that, if no hits, I'll drop the dollars and do a 4-day over the weekend classified in the big NJ daily. It's a surplus vehicle in the family fleet at the moment, so yes cash will talk. Galves on this thing was probably around $6500 when I bought the new truck in July, so even with what had to recently be fixed I should still be ahead even at that $8.5k number.

Good description - thanks
1991 ..? .. 175 big klicks, but - low for the year .l.o.l...
Ok .. if it's nice, "all" the service history, clean Carsmack, drives-looks-feels-acts like a 98, no rust, no bondo, no 61 lbs of repaint, no Bonnie and Clyde interior - just a nice 91 Yota with 175k thats been serviced "correctly", and maybe even kinda pampered in the land of the Vikings (is that possible.?) .. dealer probably hit this one at in and around the super tall $2's, low/mid $3's -- a fair price for both would be $4,5/$4,9 depending on the condition, and if it's as nice as you say it is - 1991, wow.! ....
whats he asking..?

1997 Toyota Tacoma
Regular Cab
5-speed manual transmission
80,000 miles
Burgundy exterior-gray interior
Interior is clean but it is BASE. No split bench, no power anything. Just an engine, AC, and a gearshift.
Exterior is in OK shape. Looks like there was some paint up front because the right passenger fender is a bit darker than the rest of the car.
There are the usual scratches on the exterior but nothing you can see from less than 4 feet away.
Tires are about to need replacing.
Truck runs well and everything (not much) that is has works.
What is this beater worth in Atlanta metro? They are asking $3000 for it.
The only thing is: Has the oil been changed? Take a small, strong flashlight and look past the baffle in the cylinder head. With a little craning of the neck, you can check it out easily. If it looks clean, and the dipstick isn't all caked on, don't worry about a thing. Good trucks for what they are, and at $3, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I'm looking to trade in my Jetta Wolfsburg. It's a 2001, 1.8T engine. It's in excellent condition with 47,000 miles, dark blue in color with tan interior. What are you looking at.? .. I dunno, you said it's a 01 VW Jetta Wolfsburger .. whats it look like now.?
Anyway ... it's a 1.8T handshaker, we have 47,000 almost tall miles in Bengals territory (didn't you guys finally win a came.?) we have the no-sale blue thing going on and the tan guts save it some, slider, windy sound, 16's and we have brand new round things ...
If ~ it's nice, no repaints, no I dropped the CLR in the seats, no french fry invasions, no runs no hits no errors ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $8's, low low low $9's .. the miles and the color will hold this one back .... what were you looking for.?
Terry
Mathias is right .. these things have almost a cult status, 80k and $3,000 won't even get most buyers to even blink if it's a clean/nice one, have it checked out .. you can even shove this one in the garage with your other 12 vehicles and drag it out in the spring, then dust it off and get $4,5ish for it ....
Terry.
People always try to recoup their entire maintenance bills when they sell a vehicle, saying "I just put $600 worth of brakes on it" or "that's $400 worth of new tires"...
Ask yourself - what would it be worth with worn out brakes and worn out tires, where it would fail state safety inspection and be scary to drive??
Those maintanence items HAD to be done to bring it up to "average" - you don't get extra credit just for maintaining a vehicle - you HAVE TO maintain a vehicle just to stay in the hunt.
I bought a 1986 Mustang GT 3 years ago - it had 140,000 miles on the original motor and I knew I was replacing the long block and transmission and rebuilding the rear diff - the lady looked at NADA, used their mileage figure, asked $2600 for the car, then tacked on the $1800 in Pep Boys reciepts from new tires, a clutch, and normal oil changes...
We settled on $2200..

Dealer friend is taking it to the auction and estimates $1800/2000. I think that's on the high side. What do you say? Thanks....
Ok, so i don't really go through all that to do the math, but you get what I mean I think.
No offense, and you know i love ya, Terry, but I think its possibly a car biz thing that skews your math. I can see possibly all used car dealers when looking to buy a car doing similar math. Am I on to something? Or just plain on something?
Boy, in any case, I think I need to take a trip over to CCBA. I mean, I haven't even gotten over the Benz being "new to us." And here I am thinking of car shopping again. Yikes!

ECab S10??? It's a Ranger, Mate! I doubt it makes a difference, though, birds of a feather... Heck, he's asking $5,700 thinking it's a V6; he might take the mid-$4's... he says he is going to deal and he is going to get rid of it... I'll give it a few days... good work truck, no more.
Meanwhile, across town, I tried this to broaden my horizons:
1999 Ranger XLT reg cab, 3.0 V6 automatic, air, power, bedliner and soft tonneau... red, shiny paint, no hits no errors, air freshener smell (yuck), 61k and the tires are "original".
Private owner has been reading the Book, asking $6,900... dropped to $6,400... I still think they're out of their tree. Runs well, cold air... I'm thinking $5000 would be OK. I like the ECab better, though. The V6 is a thrasher, even behind the automathic.
But hey, I'm always happy when I call on an ad, and next thing you know, the asking price drops. Just doing my job :-)
