    Terry,
I am planning to buy the following car in Dallas.

    2000 GS300 Platinum Edition
    Millennium Silver with Black interior
No Nak sound, but all the goodies with Platinum Ed. + chrome wheels
    44K Miles
Relatively clean interior, few ugly scratches on the stereo.
Brakes and tires needs immediate replacement(is that normal for Lexus brakes to need replacement at 44K)

Manintinence is almost non existent (at least in Lexus records) I ran the carfax and it turn out that its a Boston lease car. That explains the rust on the rotors and calipers. Drives good and everything works. I took it to local Lexus dealer for pre buy sales inspection and they came out with brakes+tires+Ball joint+alignment recommendations.

I even called the Lexus dealer in Boston who initially leased the car, there is no 15-30K service record other than oil change and tire rotation at 27K and chrome wheel install in March 03 and Balancing in July 2001. Do Lexus have national service records database?

That was good news, the question mark?
Front hood bumper and right fender have been replaced with OEM Toyota parts. Both right doors and quarter panel has been painted(relatively clean job) but at places you could see the paint crease around the window trims on the doors. All panels align perfectly. I could not see any frame damage at all, both in the engine compartment and underneath, nor did Lexus dealer mentioned any. No bolts turned in the engine area except on the right fender. Ironically it has chrome GS 400 badging on the trunk??

Dealer is my in-laws family friend, he had it on his web site asking for $19950, giving to me for 18.3K. I have not bought it yet but been driving the car for past one week, put over 500 miles on it and it drives excellent. No drifting even with balding tires, no squeaks/rattles. What's your opinion. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Terry, and thanks.
I've got an 02 Focus SVT six-speed, a 3-door, 18K miles, leather/cloth heated seats, traction control, sunroof, 6-disc changer, in bright red. Tires almost new, couple of scuffs on the bumpers but otherwise in great shape. I'm in Seattle./Tim

It appraised for 14,000. I am running to the sales desk right now. One question, 2004 Saab 9-3 Aero or 2004 Infiniti G35x? I think i Know the answer, but I hate automatics.

Drift, It's about a five hour drive to get here and if the tollbooth workers go on strike, it'll only cost you 2 bucks. You'd be a lot closer to your truck too.

I'd go with the Saab, if you are leasing... Probably cheaper and more interesting.. I wouldn't buy one, though.

which is a good example of why i haven't been able to find one in my area for anywhere near that $13.5-$14k price. The 2 i found in jersey were higher miles for $18k. nothing like a UCM who buries him/herself and expects the consumer to dig them out of the hole. ;)

but congrats to you, nonetheless. do they sell both saabs and infinitys at that same dealership? i don't think i've ever seen that combo before.

Terry, looks like you forecast winning teams as well as you do car values. As I recall, you picked the Red Sox weeks ago. Hope you covered some bets. I wish now I'd had more of them with the yankers and redbird fans.

On topic, I was wondering what value I'm looking at now and what might be the diminished value hit for my trusty steed?

2000 Infiniti G20t (touring package), 5-spd manual, pearl jade (light green), tan leather, 52k miles, bun warmers, sun roof, new round things at the corners, maintenance up to snuff, located about 40 miles from the mecca of Red Sox Nation (Fenway Park) and, yes, we do face it and say a prayer during the 7th inning stretch on game days.

The car was/is in nearly puuuuuurfect condition, no animals, no tears, no stains, no smoker, no runny nose people (grown), nearly no nicks scratches or dings, and no earned runs (last 3 games!!! Looks like Murderers row was the Sox bullpen).

But.... I just replaced the front driver side fender (neighbor used brail method to back up). I didn't notify my insurance. Their insurance picked up entire tab. Repairs are very good. Would be hard to tell from outside, but any pro will spot immediately if they open the hood. It took me only a second to notice stuff like the inner fender lip is painted on the replacement part and not on the other original fender. Also had both bumpers air brushed to remove 4 years worth of normal wear and tear. So, car actually looks better then before the mishap.

Anyway, looking for the real deal numbers for trade or curb. Also, can you estimate what I took in the way of a diminished value hit.

SB - the run on Tuesday (Walkers ding dong) was earned, not that it matters now (or to your Infiniti).

How come I never stuff like this Infiniti or the low-option but cheap 325i that someone reported seeing a few weeks ago? A stick G20 would be right in my wheelhouse (keeping with the baseball theme), and appropriately odd enough to suit my taste. And of course generally unloved by the car buying population as a whole.

OK, back to CCBA with me.

Looking for realistic assessment of trade-in value: St Louis IL, 1999 Chevrolet Lumina LS sedan, 6 cylinder, auto, 106,000 all highway miles (to & from work), dark green, sun roof, execellent condition interior & exterior, no accidents or damage, new tires, non-smoking, permanently garaged.

My guess is that I should just sell it outright because trade-in is probably $2,000 below what I could sell it for!

Oh right, forgot about Walkers space shot. I should have said none off the starters.

The G20 had limited appeal while it was around. But, it retains some of cardoms more loyal ownership. Couple that with their seeming bulletproofness and people just hang onto the darn things forever. Especially, for the later (P11) model stick versions. Around here at least, in the rare instance when one appears, they don't seem to collect dust on a lot. Especially, if it's a nice one.

and help me make a decision. Am about to buy a large SUV, semi-luxury. For grocery getting, non-towing, weekend-travel ice-hockey mom choosing between an '05 Sequoia Ltd and '05 Navigator Ultimate--both with 2WD and both with DVD, Nav, and a few other options.
Price difference, after I take into account the 179 tax deduction and rebates will be about 6K.

Over the 5 years that I'll use it, based on my previous behavior, I'll drive the truck to 100K before trading it in.

Edmunds "true cost to own" data says a loaded Navigator Ultimate with 75K and 5 years will go for about the same price as a loaded Sequoia with same miles and years. Do you agree with this prediction or would the Nav be likely to go for less?

Also, what about with my situation, which isn't covered by Edmunds' True Cost figures, since I usually get to the "magic" 100K mile mark?
Frankly, I'd get the Sequoia, since I like it and it's cheaper, BUT about thrice a month I'd feel bad about making an occassional passenger sit in its third row seat. I am 5' 8" and can't stand the 3rd row for more than a few minutes, with knees practically under my chin. My kids and their friends are getting tall, too.
But it IS just 3-4 times a month that someone would have to sit back there...

So, if these two trucks really do trade in for the same price in 5 years with 75 to 100K miles, I figure the cost of having the seldom- needed third row comfort of a Navigator would boil down to the 6K difference in their initial cost...which starts out more like an 8K difference Before the 179 deduction's effect on my tax bill.

Please, please answer this question or at least do a post saying you're not going to answer it, if that's the case. I've never been successful getting any responses on this board. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, or maybe it is mainly for car dealers.
They're the ones whose questions seem to get replies. If I'm posting this question on the wrong board, please tell me which one to use? Thanks so much !

You hurt my feelings - and it's only 7:45am on the morning ......... sniff sniff sniff ..... ;(

I thought I answered a few of your posts in the past(?) .. but I do get tied-up, I do have the Polka band on the weekends, my accordion lessons during the week and the quilt making classes every other night and I do have the attention span of an asparagus, plus I've been trying to figure out what Kerry has been saying for the last 6/7 weeks, and it's hard to find a legal translator on this continent ...

Actually, I get very few dealers questions, that said, I do get a lot of dealer "dislike mail" in my email box for these little posts of mine .l.o.l.... so I'm damned if I do, and damned if I don't ...

The only thing I can recommend is to: *Repost* if I miss you, and please, don't drop the post number, just drop a copy of the orginal because in 20 or 30 posts you become a memory - nothing personal ... are we cool.?

Anyway ..... all my Ex's live in Texas .............. ;^)

Too Nav, or not too Nav - that is the question.!

For starters: it's not important who sits where and what the cost is, if "you" don't like it ... it's "your" money, it's "your" driving time, it's your butt on the seat in traffic and in hot and cold weather, it's you driving and backing this dude up, down, and around the community ~ so drive them both for a long distance and see which one "you" feel most comfortable with .. all those tape measurements and a minor seating discomforts will mean *squat* if you want to commit Hara-kiri after 3/4 months because of things like bad button controls, wipers in the rain, road noise, air conditioning controls, storage and "your" personal seating arrangements .. remember, you first .. - unless all these other clowns are going to be making the payments for you ......

The other stuff: .. I have no idea where Edmunds gets their figures, if you Know your going to keep this puppy for 4/5 years and drop 100k+ on it, then the Sequoia will bring more money than a Nav .. I sell, drive and buy Navs all day long and I like em', but when you mile-up a vehicle you pay the price .. in this situation a 100k (CLEAN) Sequoia will bring anywhere from $4,0 to $5,000 more than the Nav at trade time, and probably $6,0/$7,000 more down Retail Rd in 5 years (based on todays figures) .. don't get me wrong, this ain't a Lincoln thing, it's a market thing, lots of nice clean 100k+ Navs out there, but try to sell em' in a hurry, in the meantime, the Sequoia (clean) will go bye bye in no time ... so get your calculator out, add 10, divide by 3, subtract 2, multiply by 6 and make a decision.

                  I hope this helps - I'm tired and it's time for a nap .................. ;)

    Hello -

I am looking for a fair private party sale price:

    Located in Tampa, FL.

1994 Honda Civic EX ($16,400 MSRP - still have window sticker).
    94,000 miles.
Auto, sunroof, power windows and locks, CD, AC blowing cold air.
Maroon exterior. Some minor scratches, couple of hail marks on the hood, paint is not faded (not glossy either, just not faded). Looks 4-5 years old, not 10 (garaged much of the time).
Grey cloth interior - very nice condition. Plastics are not cracked or faded, seats are not worn or faded, no stains, french fry invasions, etc. Only issue is that the front left driver side speaker cover in the door is missing.
    Tires have 60%+ tread remaining.
Major services performed at Honda. Interim oil changes performed every 3000-4000 miles.

    Overall, very nice car.

So, what is a fair price to sell to a private party?

    Thanks - Damon

PS - I asked about a used Lexus SC430 last month (black with baseball glove leather interior). My father-in-law passed on that one. Then a week later he walked in and told them to wrap up a new Blue one that was in the showroom - beautiful color - and he is very happy with the car.

THANK YOU!! You gave me a much needed laugh and I know you're kidding about getting your feelings hurt, but I am sorry, just the same for complaining. Lord, it was the middle of the night and my eight-year old was keeping me up with her cold for the second night in a row. I've definitely now caught her cold and I think her whining must have been contagious, too.

Nevertheless, you very promptly and completely answered not only my "technical" question about trade-in value but you gave me a little free therapy about remembering that I'm the one driving/paying for the truck. You wouldn't believe how insanely child-centered my entire world has become. It's just nuts. And I'm not the only one doing it in my neck of the woods. It's like we are in some sort of affluenza competition to prove we're doing the best job of providing for our childrens' every need and wish.

You gave me some numbers to crunch and some food for thought and I am very much obliged. Maybe I can get this truck bought and get back to my usual "virtually oblivious to vehicles" world!

I sold my old neon to a family of nine for $550 and I'm getting tried of riding women home from the bar on the handle bars of my trek bike during the week in this rain and getting a Kia as a rental car on the weekend. I'm definably going to test drive that five series with a 5-speed today or Saturday and buy it if I can get a good deal. The car fax on the car is clean and kyfdx said $22k might be a good deal but I'm still wondering what the expert Terry thinks.

    Thanks,

    Donald

    --------------------------------------------------

I drove a few FWD V-6 near-luxury cars but they didn't do anything for me and than of course I made the mistake of test driving a 5-series. Might as well get an Avalon or an Impala if I can’t find a nice five. The real 5-series I want is black with a nice 5-speed manual Trans. One finally popped up today on auto trader. (Or I managed to find it) Assuming the car is in good shape what you are guys think is a good deal for it.

Texasmom, just an idea but why don't you try a nice new Sienna or Odyssey. For your needs as you describe them, a minivan would suit you much better, IMHO. No need to worry about 3rd row legroom in either of them. Plus you'll save a ton of money to boot.

Great idea!! I was thinking exactly the same thing.. but if texasmom is like my wife, that will be a non-starter... No mini-vans or station wagons (Even though the MDX is essentially an AWD Odyssey).

If I understand your post, the '05 Sequoia Ltd costs $6K LESS than the '05 Navigator Ultimate, AND, you like the Toyota better. Hmmmmmm.........this is a tough one.

Add in the Toyota reliability, & resale value......if it was me, my friends could ride in the third row seat occasionally, or, they could walk :-) I'm half kidding, but if you feel guilty, take the 3rd row seat riders out to lunch occasionally--get them liquored up--they won't notice the sore knees. And you'll still be way ahead with the Toyota.

    (former Toyota truck owner)

  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
if you're gonna spend that kind of money, go with the Toyota. Anyone who will be significantly uncomfortable on the occasional ride probably needs the exercise and should walk.
Nothing wrong with the Ford/Lincoln presumably, but I'd take my FoMoCo product with fewer gizmos rather than more, if you take my meaning.

Finally, as the other boys have said, get a minivan. Big 2wd SUVs are downright embarrassing, especially if they don't tow. Pure Poseur vehicles, little space for the mass and the girth, guzzle gas, where's the love?

As far as "It's like we are in some sort of affluenza competition to prove we're doing the best job of providing for our childrens' every need and wish." -- that's really up to you. Our 5-year-old girl is the apple of my eye, but I bloody well see to it that she does NOT have "every need and wish" fulfilled. Plenty of self-centered spoiled brats around, nobody needs another one...

Perhaps you don't need advice on child-rearing from some goons on a car chat board, though...

Terry - can you please give me an updated value on my parents' 98 Camry LE V6. 23,000 miles, up to date service, but original brakes and tires. Power everything/cruise/factory alloys. Also has side air bags, was special ordered to get them.

Color is metallic beige and interior is more beige. Driver's seat has a few mystery marks, but interior is pretty clean. Overall condition is good, but one shallow little crease in the left rear quarter panel - 1" x .5" at most.

Ready to trade for a new Camry in Upstate NY, near Albany.

The color is right for anywhere, miles are on the looow side .. we have the 3rd seat, serviced, new sneakers (again), boards and a few little snake bites here and there, no paint by numbers, seats have that "lovin'" feelin' ... all in all, it sounds like a nice one .. trade side, in and around the low to mid $22's, maybe "might" could see some dealer stroll towards the $23 region, maybe ..... drive 2 miles south, take a right, and thats Retail Rd ~ $25,900 *asking* and cut it loose for the $24,5/$25,0 figure ... you guys pay taxes on the difference in Indiana, yes.?

                                    Terry.

I should really start sending you some checks in the mail.

Could you help me out with this:

    Location: Atlanta, GA
Vehicle: 1999 Honda CR-V EX AWD
    Engine: 4 cylinder
    Transmission: automatic transmission
    Mileage: 123,000 miles
Color: White exterior/dark gray cloth interior
Options: CD player, power windows, power locks, cruise control, AWD, alloy wheels, keyless, AC
Accessories: Tow hitch, running boards, bug deflector on hood, roof rack with cross bars
Exterior Condition: Excellent with the exception of a small dent in the rear plastic bumper. It's about the size of a fist. Otherwise, it looks great for the year and mileage. I could not find another ding or scratch on it.
Interior condition: Couldn't find a stain anywhere, non-smoker, didn't even need a vacuum.

Price for the CRV is $6300.

    Considering trading this:

    Vehicle: 2003 Honda Civic SI
Tranny: Manual transmission (only tranny choice)
Color: Metallic Blue with black cloth interior
    Mileage23,000 miles
Options: ABS, cruise, CD, AC, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, fog lights, keyless
Condition: It looks new with the exception of a slight (maybe 1/4") ding on the lower driver's side door. The car is garaged at home but does sit in uncovered parking during the day.
The interior is spotless and we are non-smokers.

slap yourself before you do something you will regret. Unless of course you whacked Gee with a shovel and buried him in the back 40 so he doesn't need his car anymore.

I'm in Seattle./Tim

stickguy: It was just an idea. Although smacking gee with a shovel does sound like something I would enjoy every now and then ... :)

I just talked to gee and he now says there's no way he is getting rid of the Si for the CRV. No shovel-smacking necessary.

    $3.5K-$4.5K for a '94 Civic... WOW..

Makes me think that a '94 Acura Vigor is a great buy... I see those all the time for $3500-$5500..

We had a 93 Vigor. Great driving and looking car. The inline 5-cylinder does sound like a tractor when it's cold but it is very smooth once it warms up. There isn't a lot of interior room either. All in all though it's a very nice car especially if you can find one with a manual transmission.

Our 93 GS was trouble-free right up til the day we traded it in with 75,000 miles. Coincidentally, we traded it for a 98 Civic EX. Gee could never get comfortable in the driver's seat so it was yet another car that fell victim to the "great spider invasion".

We leased a '94 GS.. all the toys.. automatic. 3yr/50K miles.. It was a great car.. Not as roomy as the current Accords, but very nice.. It had an MSRP of $29K!!... The lease incentives were unreal.. Paid $331/mo including tax, with only first payment and security upfront..

Leased three Accords after that.. My wife said she missed the Acura, and the butt-kissing service she got at the Acura dealer.. That was a great handling car for a front-driver.

    regards,
    kyfdx

The GS has a very nice sound system with the different settings ... was it called DSP?

Don't remember.. it was my wife's daily driver.. It had a CD player and a cassette, though.. First car we had with a CD player.. White w/taupe leather.. I really, really liked it, except that we had to sell my Porsche to get it.. Baby, you know....

for sharing your know-how and information. I agonized and test drove minivans and loved both the new '05 Ody Touring and the '05 Sienna. Am going to get a Touring after the "first year bugs" are worked out. In the meantime, I want my other car to be an SUV. The SUV decision has been a lot harder to make than the minivan decision. As I said, it is the third row issue with the Sequoia, or with the LX470. My next door neighbor just got her second Lexus--one 330 and one 470. The 470 is used, but low miles. She's a smart cookie but her kids are TINY physically and their sports don't require huge equipment bags. My oldest kid plays ice hockey and his bag is HUGE. I carpool with another big kid who also has a huge bag. This has been going on since they were both 5 years old and now they're 12 years old. I don't think they're going to quit playing. We do a lot of road trips. I would love an LX 470 or a Sequoia but it's the third row and the luggage capacity. It looks like I'm going to get a Navigator, which kills me because I know it won't be as reliable or have as good resale value. But, I think it will serve our needs better while we have it. I just hope it doesn't spend all it's time in the shop or something. By the way, I'd get a Suburban but I'm worried about the lack of side impact safety. It just dawned on me that I shouldn't be posting this non-real world trade in value stuff on this board. Sorry. But, it is kind of a trade-in issue because one of the main reasons I want a Toyota or Lexus is trade-in and this board has confirmed that it is a 5 to 6 thousand dollar issue at 100K trade in time.

So you are going to buy the Sequoia/Navigator and then trade it when the Ody comes out? Or are you going to have both?

If you are going to buy then trade why not lease the Sequoia or the Navigator?
