A quote from a recent article I wrote for "Intellichoice" magazine..."I recommend against a Better Business Bureau complaint – most BBB chapters are funded by local Chambers of Commerce, and your dealer is likely a member – a paying member – it’s in the BBB chapter’s interest to find against you instead of for you. I’ve very rarely seen a positive outcome (for the consumer) in a BBB arbitration."
You can get the GM rep's info from your service manager.

Hi Terry -
I'm interested in your thoughts on the following as a trade-in:
Location: Germantown, MD
Year/Make/Model: 2002 VW Passat W8
Body Style: 4dr
Engine: 4.0L 8 cylinder, 5 speed auto
Driveline: AWD
Mileage: 43750
Color: Silver/Black leather
Options: All standard options (let me know if you need these listed) + VW 6 disc CD changer and LoJack
Condition:
Interior - clean
Exterior - some dings (license plate circles) and several light scratches on rear bumper, a couple of light scratches on doors (I park in a parking garage everyday)
Tires - not sure how much they are worn, what's a good way to find out?
Brakes - I don't have the numbers from my last service, but FWIW I was told that the front brakes looked good and the rear brakes need to be looked at in about 5000 miles.
Maintenance - All scheduled maintenance performed by dealer, including the 40k service.
I was offered 17,500 by a dealer (which eventually went up to 18,000). Carmax offered 18,000 yesterday, with all of their indicators showing "consistent for its age".
Thanks,
Lawrence
==================================
I bet you thought you would get missed, huh.?
02 Passat "W8", miles are almost kind of maybe ok, color is good for the area, all the standard stuff plus a few others ....
IF ~ we have no paintwork, no crash and burn interiors, deep sneakers and the service was done yesterday ... then trade side, in and around the mid/high $16's low $17's .. these are funny little critters, few and far between, few were built and few were sold .. so, if you can see $18,0 for it (real money) then ~ be there, cuz' thats ALL the money on the planet for a 45,000k Vdub V8 .. I bought one a few weeks back with 11k and puuuurfect, looked like a cover girl, paid $18,9 ..............
Let me know how it goes ....

fully loaded except doesn't have xm satellite radio as only option I didn't want.
what can i get for it traded in to a dealer vs private party?
=============================
In the land of the Packers .. we have a 04 Maxx LT, we have the V6 thing, we have the auto thing, we have the slider thing, we have the bun warmers and the hydes that go with ... if if if ~ no hits no runs no errors, no paint by numbers, clean, just a nice 7k driver .. then trade side, in and around the super tall $14's, low low $15's, might "maybe" could find a dealer to drop the tall $15's in it because of the short miles, maybe ..... down Retail Rd, superb Ad, glorious detail, $17,900 *asking* and wave goodbye at the first $16,9/$17,5 .......
Like Drift mentioned, the dealer and/or the BBB have nothing to do with negotiations, thats a factory/regional Service Mangler thing ......
Drift, you have your Maxx's mixed up with your Malibu's .....
Terry.
They haven't been discussed much, except Terry, you once called them "another best-kept secret"... so give it up, what are they doin'?
I looked at autotrader yesterday for a lark... good gravy, two years old for $19, great stuff... don't i recall someone buying one new last year for something unbelievable like $17?
Anyway, thanks in advance as always, -Mathias

Interior in excellent condition, some color fading on the bumpers, no dings or other scratches, new tires & brakes, up to date on all maint., no other body or paint work.
I need your help.
Here is a vehicle that I am posting for a co-worker. His lease on this vehicle is up in a month or two and he wants to know what it is worth. He has received a buy-out offer (did not provide it to me) and wants to know what he could buy a similar vehicle for it. Obviously, he will buy the vehicle if the numbers make sense but ...it is a T&C.
Suggested Information for posting trade-in values:
Location: Chicago, IL (Western Suburbs) Year/Make/Model: 2001 Chrysler Town & Country LX
Body Style: Mini Van
Engine: 3.5 liter, 6 cylinder, auto
Driveline: Front Wheel Drive

Color: Forest Green Metalic (ext)/ Gray (int)
Major Options: CD player, rear air, power sliding side door (p/s) and tailgate
Condition: Good
Details of interior and exterior, including dings, scratches etc.- 3 typical door dings, interior is in good shape, carpets need a shampoo job
Tires - 50 % worn
Brakes- New
Maintenance- Good mechanical condiition
Other: Indicate prior damage/insurance claims, repaints, etc.- None
Lets take a look into Mickeys world .... sorry you got missed, but I'm still cleaning up after the Xmas party (hmm, I wonder what that is, it looks like) ....
Anyway ..... on Goofys street we have a 94 Stang GT coupe', we have 110k, we have some typical faded red paint, knuckle buster, tan guts, abs, power pack, new stoppers, round things and a spoiler (and a partridge in a Pear tree) ..... if the clutch is strong, the air is cold, just some Florida fade .. then trade side, in and around the tall $2's, low/mid $3's, maybe might "could" find a dealer to drop the tall $3's in it -if- it's super nice and super clean, maybe - but $3,5 would probably just about kill it ..... great vehicle down Retail Rd, a come to Jesus detail, a great 4/5 liner Ad in the Sentinel, $7,900 *asking* and cut that bad boy loose for the first $6,0/$6,9 .... I bet it won't take long if you do it right ..........................
Let me know ...!

'00 32K miles E320 Gold on tan. All standard loaded stuff with the slider. Seems to be "in the wrapper," but, for some reason, no CD player???
Any idea what the price is on this in NJ, Terry? Dealer is asking $19,995.
I found myself not really "smitten" with this car, though, and really think I'd be mad at myself if I traded my Volvo for it.
So, having said that, I want to go check out some used S80 T6s and see how those feel. So, could you give me a realistic number on the following:
'01 T6 38K miles. Blue over grey. Usual loaded up stuff. No bun warmers and no Nav. Price is $17,495, which seems low? But, that's why I'm here asking about it.
AND, while we're at it, what would an '00 T6 just like it go for?
As always, thanks.

Trade in Price: $13,500. The exact amount that Edmunds suggest for this car in this area. I did bring all my records as well as a print out of Edmunds report as well as all service records out of the myford website. They tried to pay 1,500 less, but that wouldn't work for me. Bring your Edmunds reports, it helps a lot.
"don't i recall someone buying one new last year for something unbelievable like $17?"
That was me. $17,615 to be exact, on a van with a MSRP around $25,4. That was a loss leader, but deals in the 18-19k range new seem to be fairly common.
"apparently handle ok."
They handle really well, to the point of inspiring a bit of hooliganism - or at least tolerating it. My wife was not amused with my handbrake turns on the slushy roads through our little "drive through" Christmas light show...

MODS: turbo, intake, intercooler, rims, exhaust, v-tec controller, pulley system, headers, and custom manifold
CONDITION: part of the clear coat on left side faded or gone, minior dents, and little bit of fadedness on inside of door pockets (they are plastic)
'what would be the real value of the car...the dealer said KBB value was $18885 mods, but i couldn't find the version they had....all other sites gave me a qoute of $11-12K....is there a KBB book that lists aftermarket prices that are included in the car?
Factor in a necessary partial or total repaint, and the car should be worth $2-3k less than book...
They turboed an automatic?? Who did the work? Do they have documentation? It could have been done by Bubba Gump's Auto Tuning, home of the biggest shadetree on the block...
There is no NADA adds for an aftermarket turbo or other mods, save for a couple hundred dollars.
Typically, you SUBTRACT for that junk.... as in, take money away, as in, forget it.
Want mods? Do your own, pay a good shop, whatever. But the car is worth less than a stock one, at least to a dealer.
I didn't even catch the auto/turbo thing. Good heavens, who did that job, Vlad the Impaler?
Congratulations on coming here first, though.

"Macrame", I don't think so .. I passed those classes last year, it's the pine needles art collection for this year ...
The Protege ES, always a best pick, but never picked ... good color for the area, slider, 20k, power pack and maybe have the abs/sab's, but we do know it's a handshaker ... it's not "how much" for the bags and brakes, it's how quick they sell and/or how little one has to discount the vehicle, if ya know what I mean .... down Retail Rd, $10,495 *asking* and $9,5/$9,9 gets a new owner ..... what are they asking.?

1998 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT x-cab shortbed 4x4, 5.7L V8, auto, silver/grey, loaded up.....leather, pwr goodies, am/fm/cd, the usual SLT junk. Truck is in good shape for its age, newish tires, aftermarket alloys, dual exhaust. Oh and the miles........150k!
Anyway, the guy is convinced that the truck is worth $9k trade.....he says Cal offered him $11,500 in July. I'm thinking $3k-$4k is all the moose coins and a bag of moose nuggets. Whatcha think??
I was guessing about 10K if it was nice. Sounds like a lot of car for the high 9s.

#23582 of 23680 audi A4 trade-in value by lngtonge18 Dec 08, 2004 (8:20 pm)
My parents are trying to trade in a 2001 A4 1.8t FrontTrak with 56k. It's black with gray cloth, 5 speed, sport suspension package, 16" alloys, power sunroof, homelink, autodimming rear and side view mirrors, CD player. Interior and exterior is in good shape with only some scratches on the rear bumper. Car was dealer maintained until 50k. They live in West Palm Beach, Florida (33458).
So far, they have been offered what I feel are ridiculously low trade in values. The Acura dealer started at 8k and then went up to 10k but said they wouldn't go any higher. The Infiniti dealer basically said they didn't want to insult him with their offer but stated they would only offer him $7500. The salesman went on to explain why they were offering such a low value by stating the rear passenger door appears to be repainted because of tape marks and there are paint blemishes on the roof near the drain rail. This car was bought new by my parents and stays in a garage. It was never wrecked in that door and the remark about the roof just floors me because I've never seen a dealer look at the roof that closely. To be honest, I'm quite baffled. When they bought their Audi, the A4 had one of the highest resale values. Have values really tanked that bad on the A4? I know the cloth hurts the value some, but otherwise, it has a good mix of options. What is the best trade value they can expect on their car? My brother is also worried since he owns a similar car (his 01 1.8t has quattro, xenon, 17" alloy, and leatherette) and is wondering whether he should get rid of his car before his mileage gets too high (he has 20k now). Does he have cause to be worried or are these 2 dealers just a fluke?
I'm going to sell the car myself, so I'm looking for a good newspaper listing price and a cut it loose from the herd price.
Selling:

I'm looking for a good value on a used minivan. The following one looked pretty decent to me. What range could I expect to pay for something like this:
2003 Ford Windstar SE
29,000 miles
blue exterior
rear heat and air
quad seats
keyless entry
all the usual power accesories for the trim level
tires are original
body has one ding, but in otherwise good shape
interior is clean

Some dealers are giving me a trade-in value and subtracting that from my payoff ($29,352.07). Others are saying I owe my monthly payment times the amount of payments left ($8k or so). I'm leaning towards the former and I need to know if I have a leg to stand on regarding my trade-in value. Can I assume a dealer will work this way?
Dealers are ofering me 22k, 23k for the car but I need to know if I can negotiate higher. There are a lot of nice rebates out there and I may be able to use them to offset my negative equity. Given the right circumstance, if I can negotiate up to 25-26k, I may only have to pay MSRP for a car:
29k payoff - 25k trade-in = 4k negative equity.
Apply a 3k incentive towards negative equity and that leaves 1k tacked back onto Invoice.
Assuming I can even go this route, how far up can I negotiate my trade-in? BTW, I live in New England so I assume AWD is a bonus up here...I would try to sell it myself, but I want to get in on the incentives before year-end if possible.
Am I living in a fantasy world?!?!?
Thanks in advance!!!
I'm guessing that $22K-$23K is real money for your car..
The dealers that are subtracting that from your payoff are buying the car from you and they are correct.. the others that tell you that you have to make your payments.. They aren't taking your car in trade.. they are just turning it back into the leasing company..
So, both of them are right, but you want to deal with the first ones.. the dealers that will take your car in trade..
And.. yes, you are living in a fantasy world.. $7K-$8K is probably closer to the hit you will take than $3K-$5K..
The best advice is to live with the car until your lease is up.
Or.. try swapalease.com.. You won't get it done by the end of the year, though.

Thanks Kyfdx. Yep, I'm in Columbus. Thanks for posting these. I want a '94 or '95 LS or GS sedan, and based on the prices I've been seeing, the first one probably either has a gazillion miles, or looks like crap. :-) I posted what I wanted on a couple acura boards, and have already gotten some leads. Hopefully the right one will turn up.
