I just purchased an '04 Mercury Sable from a dealer auction in PA for $11,600, loaded with everything but a sunroof. There are not too many Taurus SELs out there, but tons of SES 24v. Make sure you get a 24v! (there will be an emblem on the fender). The few that I saw with leather and sunroof were probably going for the low to mid $12ks. 2001s with maybe 30k or 40k miles were only doing under $8k.

You'll find that these cars are probably going to be the best bang for your buck. If you are going to be putting a lot of miles on it, I'd recommend taking your time and finding one with a few more miles already on it. The dealers will be more willing to let it go. My Sable has just under 20k miles, but looks as if it only had 5k.

You'll do even better if you can find a private party seller, but most of those will probably be unrealistic about what the car is worth. I've been to the auction, and I can confirm the weak resale value.

    Good Luck

    Terry,

    Please help with this one:

    Illinois

    2001 Lexus LS430 Ultra Luxury

    45,000 miles

    Black/Black

Pretty good shape/no prior damage, new tires, full maintenance record

    Non-Lexus Dealer trade-in

In service in September of 2000- No warranty...

    Asking $37K

    ******

    Terry,

After short negotiation we are at $34K...

Please let us know what you think.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I don't know the prices on these, but this sounds way better than the 150K mile ones you mentioned. Could be worth some phone negotiation (Mid 7s?), a refundable credit card deposit, & a trip.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
And there are a ton of 2003-2004 Taurus with 50k coming off business leases for $7-8k retail. Purchased a 2002 in June for $5500 with 50k. That is a lot of car for not much money.

I think so too. The high mile ones were just frustration talking...

LOL. Thanks Terry. If knitting is your thing, cool, but I like cars more. :-) Did I mention I've always wanted one of these? I started out looking at mid-late 90s Accords and Maximas, but I really like the Legends. He sent me some pictures, and they look ok, but some things you just need to see in person. Oh, the guy with the dark gray one in FL. I asked him to send me more pictures of the interior and exterior, and he sent the same poor quality single picture from the autotrader ad. Pass.

Always good to check for the vin#'s ... Michael Vick territory ..

Color is ho-hum, miles are tall, 2wd, auto, Xtra cab SR5, V8 .... if the breeze is cold and the bed doesn't have that Hiroshima look, just a nice hi-mile Yota .. these stupid things get ALL the money, even with ALL the miles ......

So, If ~ it looks/drives/feels like 40k, then the dealer might have the tall $8's, low/mid $9's in it .. a "fair" price down Retail Rd.? low/mid $11's if it's nice, clean and doesn't need -0- ... if it needs stuff, start deducting ........... whats he asking.?

...... In Chi-town - 01 triple black LS430 (nice ride) 45k with all the shiny stuff .. good condition, not perfect, not a Mona Lisa, but nice with new round things ..... no runs no hits and no Salvation Army kettles in the grille, just a pretty nice ride, but no CPO stuff ....

Dealer might have paid the mid/high $28's, maybe the low low $29's, dropped the skins on and it might hit the table at the high $29ish, low low low (did I say low.?) low low $30 figure ... at $34 he's not trying to kill ya - but call me silly, call me stupid, but I have a funny feelin' that $32,5/$33ish gets a red bow on it before Christmas ..... let me know ...... :)

I never got a response on this, but here is the postmortem anyway:

    Central Kentucky area

    1986 Buick Century

    4 door

    4 cyl / 3 speed auto (I think)

    FWD

    12,000 or 22,000 miles (can't remember)

Brown exterior with brown vinyl top, brown interior

A couple of dings, a dent in the rear bumper, always kept in carport, looks nice for its age. Center armrest held together with tape, otherwise the interior is nice. New headliner.

Tires and brakes good; oil changed yearly. Recent transmission service. Bumper repaint at some point in the past.

Elderly relative decided to sell her car. Private party selling price was $2500. I think she got all the pesos on that one!

"Private party selling price was $2500."

Wow, was that including the dried-out seals?

You gotta be kidding me... -Mathias
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,281
Yes, and any rodents that might be living in the engine compartment were also free of charge. The tires were Sears-brand that are approximately a decade old. The carport may have saved them from dry-rot, but again I don't remember. No drips, no leaks. Our "plan" was to ask $2000 and take the first $1300-1500 that came along (roughly the auction price, according to a couple of local dealers who are not Terry). Apparantly, the relative asked (and got) $2500. It gets better. The buyer agreed to the $2500 sight unseen, although his friend had personally seen the car. I know it's pretty unbelievable and I will admit now that I don't personally have the bill of sale available to post to back it up. My dad is the POA and handled the documentary details.

    Two lessons:

    1) You don't ask, you don't get.

    2) One born every minute...

Perhaps I should offer the buyer my 2002 Altima four-cylinder, asking $18,000?

Not from me. If you're SET on getting a hybrid, at least get one from Honda or Toyota--they have several years of (apparent) success with that technology under their belts. Buying a new technology from a domestic mfg. I would think is much, much dicer.

I am less concerned with the brand as I am with the advancement of the technology. The great unknown is the value of a 1st generation after the 3rd generation has been introduced.

I just got around to reading your reply and have to say either I'm a mind-reader or something because we just decided on the CR-V over the weekend. Too much money for the Hybrid Escape and did get scared about trade-in. We have never owned a domestic car, and now it looks like we never will..

Might need to sell our 04 BLUE TSX no Navi automatic bought in 01/04. It has less than 4000 miles, came with the wheel locks, trunk mat, all season mats, and fog lights. I'm contemplating dumping off Mrs. Lance's Accord, giving her the keys to my S70, and picking up an around-town runabout in the $6k range with our tax return (thanks, W!)

I'm thinking a 960 wagon or maybe a 300E for myself...while I love the S70, I'm really missing having at least one RWD in the stable.

Anyway, I'd private party this puppy right out the door- do not pass Go, do not trade in at dealer...

This would be in the land of the Hawkeyes:

1994 Honda Accord LX coupe, with everything that includes...PW, cruise, etc. but no sunroof. Air works great (not that we need it now...it's currently -1 outside my window)

    5 speed

    Black on tan cloth

    About 5k on tires

Mechanically really sound, but general beatings and scars consistent with living almost its whole life in two college towns...plus the typical Honda rear fender rust. Interior, with a good cleaning, could be made nearly perfect...never smoked in.

Here's the kicker: The odometer broke on us about 6 months ago and has been working intermittently ever since. This happened at about 138k; Mrs. Lance drives 350 miles/week back and forth to her job on campus, so we're well into TMU territory....guesstimate maybe 150k-160k or so?

Obviously our target demographic here is a poor HS or college kid (or Mathias) :-) who doesn't care much about cosmetics and needs a reliable ride. What should we be shooting for, here?

    Thanks!

Don't look at me... I'm a snob, I don't do rust... other than that, though, what's not to like...?

We know a family... they have two adults and two younger (non-driving) kids.. SIX cars. '92 Prizm is the newest... '69 microbus (way cool)... '74 bug (bought new).... 83 (or thereabouts) Camry... just bought an Accord off of some guy's lawn for $400. The dad knows what he's doing, and when to cut bait... but still, their rides are a bit rough even for me...

I'd be surprised if you didn't see close to $2 on this thing; an Accord that still runs well for under $2 would seem like a bargain to many people. Friend of mine sold a '93 sedan, small rust spots as you describe them, 170k, auto, good shape otherwise but not maintained well beyond oil changes... he got $1k from a guy in the machine shop, with a mysterious non-starting condition diagnosed... the dude had to dump over $1k into the car, and he's STILL happy with it. Old Hondas are nuts, worse than Toyotas even, people pay the moon for them.

"runabout in the $6k range with our tax return (thanks, W!)"

Don't mention it. My daughter will be happy to pay for it.

"the dude had to dump over $1k into the car, and he's STILL happy with it."

That should be: dumped over $2,000 into the car, I checked with my buddy.

Now he owns a 12-year-old 170k 4banger for $3 and is liking it.

Can I get some info as to why this vehicle on the KBB and Edmunds trade-in values are ranging from 14,200 to 15,000?

I found this forum after I was getting 11,000-11,500 from a couple of dealers and thought I was getting hosed on the value based on my preious research. I do have two Subaru dealers who verbally said they would go as high as 14,000.

Just curious as to why there is such a differnce in Real-World vs. the apparent BS website values.

    Thanks,

Thanks Terry. NO to the kicks upside the head! Her foot will be much WORSE! Back on topic, no accidents, she has a handicap card so the few miles it's driven it is parked away from others, NEVER smoked in. And yes, if we trade, taxable amount will be the difference. I tried KBB and they give me $26.4K, which I think is HIGH. I'll be happy with $24 - $24.5. Thanks again and I'll post here for results.

that's been covered a million times on this forum.

do a search for "kelly blue book" (or any number of other search terms) and you'll find lots of posts to read from both disgruntled owners such as yourself and explanations from industry experts.

And so is the guy who printed that figure ... dealers can duplicate yours ALL day long for the $22/$23ish at any auction in America ...... $26,4.? see if they will cut ya a check ..l.o.l...

               it's a TSX, not an NSX ..

I know my example is a 6-speed, but the local Acura store has a silver CPO '04 TSX, with 8k miles listed for 23,500. Its been calling my name, but a new one is just_a_little_more, which has fortunately held me back so far. I'd assume an auto would be a grand or so higher, but still, considering mark-up and the cert., I'd guess they got into it between 20 and 20.5k. That'd put the slushbox 21.5-22 tops as a trade, at least in my Noo Joisey neighborhood. 24's would be a serious stretch as a trade for a car that stickers at 27,990. Just MHO.

....... I know more about splitting the Atom than I know where Kbb and Edmunds gets their figures from ...

Thats why this call this board:

........ The 6-speeds don't get a crowd going, even with low miles ... they might have dropped the mid/high $20ish figure, maybe even $21ish after the CPO dance, and would be willing to let that pup go for $24ish or less .. it's like trying to sell a nice 4 bedroom home, with 1 bathroom .. it's not easy ..l.o.l....
