Don't you wish you were just 1/10th as organized as Mathias? I know I do.. I can't remember what I said last week, let alone what someone else said... (which is why I never lie.. can't remember who I lied to, or what it was about).

    The CR-V (Post #24360)

In the land of the Ka-boys ... 02 CRV EX, we have the auto, 4wd, 46k, good color for the area, slider and the tires are almost okay ..... if it's clean, no visits to the paint parade, no Tsunami interior, just a nice vehicle .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $13's, maybe the low low low $14's depending on the dealer ....

Let me know what happens ..

                                   Terry.

Very Clean Vehicle, Car-Fax shows one owner, no wrecks, placed in service 6/03, Seats were not "hovered - in" but they were not beaten up by any means.

    -------------------------------------------

The all important DIFFERENCE = $10,000

    The sales contract said

    CR-V = 15,135

    Sequoia = $25,135

Original asking price for the Sequoia = $27,995

How did I do? I don't think I stole it but I don't think I got ripped off either. Hopefully Terry agrees with me.

Hi Terry et al: I need the numbers for a good friend, both trade and retail. While we all know this is not the time of the year to trade a RWD sports-car, well, sometimes the new car bug bites, and......

    Year/Make/Model: 2002 Chevrolet Camaro SS

    Body Style: 2dr

    Driveline: RWD

    Mileage: 11,000 (yes, 11,000)

Major Options: T-Tops, power driver seat, pw, pdl, AM/FM w/CD, basically loaded. SLP exhaust upgrade to 345 HP; performance 327 rear-end; custom SS floor mats.

Condition: Car is about as close to "as new" as I have seen for a car that is 3-years old.

      Brakes Original w/11K miles

Maintenance--Done to specs, oil changed to synthetic oil when purchased and maintained with such.

    >>Other colors do hide dirt better, that's true, but it doesn't make a black car "harder" to maintain".>>

I almost hesitate to take the bait on this, but it's like this:

    1. Black cars require more frequent washing to look good (there's more work already).

    2. Frequent washing dulls the wax/polish faster, giving the finish that "haze" of an unwaxed car. So Black cars also require more frequent waxing/polishing.

    3. There's the water spotting after washing someone else mentioned--brutal on a black car, even with conscientious drying it's difficult.

Nothing wrong with liking & owning black cars--I'm on my 3rd one. But for a "daily driver" vehicle, it gets frustrating for most people trying to keep it looking nice. Maybe the washing & waxing isn't that much "harder", but you have to do it a heck of a lot more often if you want the car to look nice most of the time. To probably 99% of car owners, much more frequent washing & waxing == "harder to maintain".

Ls's at the time didnt have many stand-alone options. a roof, cd changer, v8, sport package...that was about it. the v6 in question had the roof, no sport pkg, bald skins.

regardless of the color, the v6 makes it near worthless around here.

best-case scenario, i think, is that it would be around the same value as the v8...not $1500 more.
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
but it's garaged, is my daily driver, but I work from home, so it only gets used for Wendy's and Staple's runs....and I'm not driving in all the ugly weather, having to park downtown, or drive with the idiots with blinders on - if I was doing all of that, I wouldn't have bought a black car.

You can bet that if I still lived in Texas, I wouldn't have bought a black car, no matter what.

Either way, to hopefully close this area of discussion, no matter how much you like black cars, in most parts of the country, used car managers will hit them pretty hard at trade-in time, whether you like it or agree with it or not.

It's my understanding that manual is preferred in Porsche 911 series and that tiptronic hurts value.

    Any other opinions?

    Terry,

I have the following car I am thinking of trading in on a new one in Cicinnati, Ohio:

    2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

    4X4 - Select Trac

    4.7L V-8

    39,500 miles

Red Exterior with Grey Interior (cloth)

Sunroof and Class IV tow package

Excellent condition inside and out (I am kind of a neat freak)

I have a transferable 7 year/100K powertrain warranty from Jeep

Tires in good shape 8/32-9/32 tread

    No wrecks or other damage

What is a fair trade in price given current market conditions -- likely trading in on a preowned Navigator/Expedition/or Sequoia.

    Thanks.

My knee doesn't. I've been driving just the Focus for the past 2 weeks (usually I get a break and drive the Titan) since the Titan is in the shop. I get tired of shifting, I think after this car I'll side with Terry and let the car row the gears not me. Would be nice to just put it in D and go. I can see how manuals hurt resale value, ain't too many of us wanting to row the gears anymore.

I still love my Focus though, its a blast to drive.

    Hey Terry,

I bought the Acura Legend last weekend. Pearl white, GS, 140k miles, good condition overall, but needs a good cleaning. I have an appointment to get it detailed this weekend. A scuff on the rear bumper, and a small surface bubble of rust on the left rear fender that you really have to look for to see, and I'll probably get it fixed. Car runs and drives great. Asking price was $6,750, and I paid $6k. Probably about $500 more than I needed to pay, but it's really hard to find a GS, and I wanted the Type II engine. There are a few more LSs around, and Ls are all over the place. I'll post pictures once it's cleaned up. Legends seem to do stupid money just like old Accords.

The Avalon has been in Autotrader for just over a week. I started at $3900, but no nibbles for a week. I got the starter fixed (it was getting bad) and lowered the price to $3,490, and have had two inquiries so far. Cruise control just started flaking out this weekend... I know you said 2900-3400 was a fair price, but I'll be happy with anything over $2500 which shouldn't be a problem. 172k is still a lot of miles. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again.

Just thought you would get a kick out of this. The firefighter who has the 98 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 4x4 with 150k has decided that he won't take less than $10,300 on trade for the thing. Um, what is it you say?? Drive to Home Depot, fill it with dirt and make a planter out of it??

Shoot we couldn't even get $10,300 on trade for our 99 Ram 3500 V10 dually 4x4 with 26k. Guess GMCs are worth more, lol.

Golf course to golf course ..? my kinda of person, whats your handicap ..?

Your right, it's winter and the market has been diminished by 60%+ ... they're kinda all over the place right now, one dealer might think $14, another dealer might consider the tall $14's, might get real lucky and get a dealer to wander towards the deep $15ish figure, maybe .. it will depend on a lot of variables ...... Me personally , I would do some super pics, and I would want to penetrate as much as the southern market as possible, maybe eBay, maybe 2 Fat Daddy Ad's in the Atlanta and the Orlando papers at the same time, it's worked for me many times ... down Retail Rd, $19,890 *asking* and I would drop that dude faster than a speeding Tsunami at $17,9/$18,9 ... the one bad thing about these is, the sellers ego gets in the way ALL the time .. nice vehicles and this one has no miles and all the stuff, but - tiny market, get what you can upfront - and fight for the rest ..... :)

Let me know how it goes ....

I've owned three black cars, one green, one gold, one silver, and one purple. I can honestly say that the black ones were no hotter than the others. And I live in SC, so it gets REAL hot in the summer.

I do prefer the looks of black, though. Just my opinion.

    Terry,

Can you give me the retail rundown for the following. I am in the Indy area and this vehicle is on a local Chevy lot (not certified).

    2001 BMW 540i

    Sport Wagon

    V8 Auto

    RWD

    35,000

    Dark Blue exterior

    Tan leather interior

    Average brakes/tires

    Assume overall condition very good

They have it stickered for $31,750

Also(maybe Kyfdx knows), can you tell me if the warranty on '01 BMWs was the current 4year/50K and if so is the original warranty transferrable?

    Thanks,

    mabubba

4/50 transferrable on the '01 BMWs.

Nice sounding car. I'd love to have one with a stick!

Try for new tires. I think the 540s tend to go through them pretty fast.

    ditto to all stickguy says...

If you get the VIN, any BMW service department can tell you on what day the warranty ends (I'll guess it has expired).

    Please, not the stick!!

I remember a C&D review of one of these, and they said the torque band was so broad that they'd only use the odd (or sometimes the even) gears to drive around. It's like putting a stick behind a 350 Chevy... what's the point?

OK, sign me up for car buyers anonymous. I need help! But first, a question for the master.

I just bought a '94 Legend GS, and I was perfectly happy until I found a '95 GS with only 40K miles in eastern PA (West of Pittsburg) last night. I know I should have quit looking. Asking price was 11,9 and change. I asked for pictures and wanted to know if $10k was doable (I thought that was more than fair). They came back with $10,3. I had a couple questions about a couple things in the pictures, but my thinking is I can trade the Avalon (which is much harder to sell than any Honda I've had.) If I get $2k for it, and can sell the '94 for what I paid (which shouldn't be a problem) It's just about $3k more out of pocket including tax for a 1 year newer car with 100k fewer miles. Thoughts? The pictures they sent are here

    http://qwalls.net/legend/

As always, thanks. I hope there is a cure for this. :-) A '95 Legend GS with only 40k miles is kind of exciting. :-)

    Q
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
The only options on the GS were the spoiler and the CD changer I think, and this one doesn't have either. It's an automatic. Champaign color with tan guts.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,535
Very nice.. I see the "value" in getting the absolute nicest, lowest mileage one out there... but.. it is still a lot of money to put out for a ten year old car... If you drive it much, in a few years it won't be such a low mileage car anymore... losing some of that extra value... (Of course.. I say this.. knowing that my '92 only has 40K on it).

    other musings...

    1) Boring color.. the pearl white you bought is nicer...

    2) You already have a Legend, remember?

    3) If you didn't already have yours (see #2), then maybe, maybe.. I'd think about it... still a lot, though..

Drive yours for awhile.. there is always another Legend around the corner.. You'll soon find out if you need to keep looking, or if you are happy with the one you have.

Thanks for the voice of reason.

    1) I'm kind of with you on the color, now if it were black, game over!

    2) I know, but Mathias said it's ok to have two. :-)

    3) I know, but 40k miles!

True there is always another Legend around the corner, but not a 40k GS...more likely an L.

    Yeah, your membership is toast!

    Thanks,

....... Actually the color is a big selling point (plus those itsy bitsy tiny miles and hopefully a wonderful history) .... 40k .? few and far between, dealer probably paid the $7/$7,5 range for it, maybe popped another $300/$400ish into it, maybe more - maybe less ... probably hits the table at in and around the tall $7's, low $8's ....... $10,200.? nobody is getting hurt and nobody is going to retire early, I like $9,900 ..

The advantage: you can buy it and drive it for the next 25k and get all your money back down Retail Rd .... Disadvantage: your spending money ................. ;)

The all important DIFFERENCE = $10,000

    The sales contract said

    2002 CR-V EX AWD = 15,135

    2003 Sequoia SR5 2WD = $25,135

Original asking price for the Sequoia = $27,995

How did I do? I don't think I stole it but I don't think I got ripped off either. Hopefully Terry agrees with me.

    The details are below

    -------------------------------------

    The CR-V (Post #24360)

In the land of the Ka-boys ... 02 CRV EX, we have the auto, 4wd, 46k, good color for the area, slider and the tires are almost okay ..... if it's clean, no visits to the paint parade, no Tsunami interior, just a nice vehicle .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $13's, maybe the low low low $14's depending on the dealer ....

Let me know what happens ..

                                   Terry.

    Location: [Boston/MA]

    Year/Make/Model: 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLX 4motion

    Body Style: [4dr]

    Engine: [2.8 liter, 6 cylinder, auto w/tiptronic]

    Driveline: [AWD]

    Mileage: 38,500

    Color: ["silverstone" gray/black]

Major Options: [GLX model includes all options plus: 6-disc changer in trunk, "monster mats" rubber floor mats, one extra set of brand new factory floormats]

    Condition:

Very clean inside and out. A few minor scratches on paint finish, but nothing noticeable from more than a few feet away. Some scratches on wheels.

      Tires - 10-20% worn

Brakes - rear brakes new, front brakes original (wear level unknown)

Meticulously maintained. All service up-to-date and all service records available. Still under warranty until 50,000 miles.

Looking for a realistic trade-in value (I've already seen the Edmunds TMV appraisal, but want additional info to either confirm or correct it). Private party sales are advertised in the $17,500-19,500 range in my area, but I haven't taken in to a dealer to get a trade-in offer yet. Thanks for any help you can offer.

These things......are "rocket ships" in wagon disguise (actually I think the E39 Tourings look better & are way more distinctive than the sedans).

Do you know what options it has? Sport Package (black -not chrome- ext. trim & 17" rims)? Xenons? Htd. seats? Sport Seats? etc. etc.

A wild guess: that Terry will say the dealer has around $25K in it. And it's a bad winter--how many people are looking for RWD bmw's right now? Can't get mine out of the driveway today.........still I Wish I were there to look at this bad boy. And one negative--you may get way more tickets with a 540i vs the 525i........seems a small price to pay tho :-)

Terry, I got the bug after the Detroit auto show. Me thinks I am buried in this car, so give it to me straight...

    2003 Infiniti M45 4dr sedan V8/RWD

    Black with tan inside

Every option available, except chrome wheels:

Comfort/Convenience package (sunroof, power everything, full size spare, etc)

    Premium package (heated/cooled seats, etc)

Technology package (laser cruise and Nav)

    18k miles

    Brakes and tires original

Would clean up to barely good condition, needs a respray of the back bumper and a touch up on the right dogleg, plenty of swirls in the paint from the free wash at the dealer.

    Located in midtown Manhattan...

Trade in figure? I am halfway through a 39 month lease - tell me I am buried, and I will go back to my room. <thanks>

Terry - thanks for looking into this.

I have leased a 2004 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD, and would like to get out of the lease now. Can someone please let me know what price I am likely to get on this vehicle - and the best ways to sell it (online or offline). Here is the description of the verhicle:

    Volvo XC90 T6 AWD

    15K miles / Northern VA

    Automatic / 5 seater

Crystal green metallic exterior / Lt. Taupe interior

    7x17" Neptune Alloy Wheels

    Options (>2K worth):

    1) Climate Package (heated front seats, headlamp washers)

    2) Wooden steering wheel

    3) Bi-Xenon headlamps with auto level control

    2.9L/6 Cyl/Twin turbo with 268HP

    Driver/front passenger/side curtain airbags/Whiplash protection

6 Disc IN DASH CD changer

All Wheel Drive with rollover protection, and Dynamic Stability Traction Control

    and all other standard stuff.

Car is in excellent condition and has gone through all the factory scheduled maintenance in the past year.

    Thanks for your help.

I am no expert, but in Texas the M45 are retailing for $33/34 with that mileage. I looked at a few and those are nice vehicles, but they didn't find a good fit in the market. Maybe $28k trade-side?

Good luck with the sell. What do you want to buy?
  • lanzzlanzz Member Posts: 76
aggie - not sure, I like the 300C SRT-8 when it comes out, and I like the C6 - always wanted a Corvette...

Probably going to ride out the lease, but always interested in moving sooner.

local Texas BMW dealer inventory looks like this:

    Black,Black,Dark Blue,Black,Black,Black White,Black,Black,Red,Black,Black,Black.

And 1/2 of those are Black/Black. While it would not be my choice I have to ask would a dealer thats been in business for 30 years not order what sells ?
