I say that Jag isn't worth crap..

I feel really sorry for whoever owns it...

But, being a nice guy.. I will do them a favor and take it off their hands for the astronomical price of $20K....

Just tell me where to pick it up..

Really.. not worth it.. I'm just a nice guy..

    Hi, Terry:
In CA here...94403. A local independent sales lot has a 2002 530i w/sport & premium package, black on black with 34,000 miles that they bought at an auction. Can you tell me what would be a reasonable offer? Personally, I'd like to stay below $30K. Given that they bought it at an auction, do I have any leeway? List price = $34,995.
    Posting says:
Power Sunroof Air Conditioning Cruise Control
Power Steering Power Brakes Power Door Locks
Power Windows Radial Tires Gauge Cluster
    Clock Trip Odometer Tachometer
Rear Defroster Front Bucket Seats Climate Control

Dual Power Mirrors AM/FM Radio Stereo Control In Steering Wheel
Interior Woodgrain Package Anti-lock Brakes (abs) CD Player
Dual Air Bags Power Telescoping Wheel Side Impact Protection System
Dual Power Seats Lumbar Seat Supports Center Arm Rest W/ Storage
    Alum/Alloy Wheels

In the land of Aaarnold .. we have an 02 Bimmer 530i with 34k, we got the sport and prem pack, slider of course, color is good for the area, sounds like it has all the stuff - auto..?

If - if - if - if .. (CPO.?) we're deep in rubber, all the K service has been done, no road rash, no paint by numbers, no 400lb owners, looks/feels and drives like an 05 (without the ugly looks) .. if so, then the dealer probably paid in and around the mid/tall $26 low low low $27 figure ..

So figure a little transport, a little auction fee, a little service and a partridge in a pear tree, and it probably hits the table at the tall $27 figure, lets round it off to $28 ...... $34,900..? .. he's just going by book value, no biggie .. I have a feelin' that $31ish would bring that bad boy home if we don't have a CPO .....

Can we spell "update" -- don't forget to let me know .!!!!!!!

Some additional info on my 2002 Passat:

Excellent condition, no dings, scratches, etc..., new tires @ 55,000 miles, interior is pretty much flawless as I'm really the only one who's ever in it. It's been dealer serviced at all of the proper intervals.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks!

    Walt,

I'll pass along your very, very generous offer. You are quite the altruistic person.

    Thanks, Terry, as well.

Still haven't seen the car. I believe he's asking $45K, don't know which Barrett-Jackson he purchased it from, but I wasn't able to find it on their auction results website.

I'll I've been told about the condition is "all original and mint".

I also know the barometric pressure has been quite erratic the last few days in Atlanta, causing large (tennis ball sized) hail in the northern suburbs a couple of nights ago. I'll presume the Jag was garaged, but there are a lot of dealers planning hail sales this weekend...

I'm not sure I can add anything sensible to what Terry & other posters said, but here's a try:

R&T has at least one past article on E-Type Jags, with all the variations year by year, valuations, etc. It might be worth researching, but maybe you & your friend know all that stuff already.

I would underline what Terry said re:  *I mean, they can be worth anything based on the humidity, the barometric pressure and if Mickey is going to marry Minnie .....*, & memorize it.

When you say: *I'll I've been told about the condition is "all original and mint".* That means almost nothing, to most potential buyers (to be told that). Even you haven't seen the car. For anyone to even give you a ballpark figure you'd need tons of pics, & provenance, including everything & anything since the car was new. Your friend must have that, right, if he bought it at a Barrett-Jackson auction?

Without a lot more detailed info. on the car, all of this discussion is just "pie in the sky". And I'd suggest your friend contact Barrett-Jackson if he's serious about re-selling it.....& hope for a good auction day.....

A friend has this he's contemplating selling or trading in, probably on a Toyota or Honda:

    98 SAAB 900SE turbo
5-door, black exterior, tan leather interior
    5-speed manual transmission
    temp control A/C, trip computer
    dual power seats, driver's memory
    factory AM/FM cassette
power roof, mirrors, windows, locks, tele wheel
    factory alloys and low-profile tires
    ~65k miles
Kelly tires about half worn (those low-profiles don't last here in pothole-ridden Chicago)
Last time I drove it, brakes sounded a bit scrapey
Exterior good, rear end was repaired due to a parking lot collision a couple years ago
Interior OK, driver's seat a bit worn but no tears or damage anywhere, but needs detailing (light tan interior=not a good thing)

Whaddya think, for retail and trade-in values? SAABs are fairly popular on the north side of Chicago, but still, I think he's going to freak. Thanks!

I don't know anything about the price but I'm just curious.

***Had a minor accident with this car abt two months ago.. the body shop and the insurance comapny spent around $16K to reapir it...***

You really mean $16,000 and not $1,600? If it's 16k, I don't think you can call it minor, IMO.

........ Not only are we talkin' about Chi-town, but were talkin' about northern Chi-town .....

Lots of fives here .. 5 door, 5 passenger, *5 speed ... it's a 98 SE, we got 65k, slider, we got a meteorite hit to the transom, the stoppers and rubber are a little weak and we have a Bonnie and Clyde interior ..... trade side, depending on the dealer, in and around the low/mid $4's, might maybe get some nut case to stagger towards the $5 figure .. the handshaker kills it and the miles might save it, maybe ..

Down Retail Rd .. all the service finished, a Disney World detail, a super 4/5 liner Ad in the Tribune, $7,495 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $6,5/$6,9 ..... as goofy as these things are, properly done, someone from Loyola or Northwestern should pick it up .. all those "artsy" types like these ............ ;)

Wouldn't have mattered, her insurance company said they would not total that car until the damage reached 80% of replacement value. The replacement value they put on the car was $14k, so the damage would have had to top $11,200. One of the pitfalls of a Subaru, they have a crazy book!

Its getting a complete repaint (good thing for a silver car me thinks) and almost every panel was replaced or straightened. On the bright side it was all cosmetic, no structural damage at all to the car or mechanical. Heck, she drove the thing for 6 or 7 miles trying to find help after it happened.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I don't remember the details of your mom's Subaru, year, miles, etc., but I suppose if she keeps it for a few years ("drive it forever") the body repairs won't be as important when you finally go to sell a depreciated Subaru. (You won't be selling it someday to picky bmw or porsche buyers). Plus, it's already been "pre-moosed", as it were; is that somewhat common in Alaska?

Thanks Woody, Terry, Walt, et al.

I'm not the one buying the Jag. My buddy is buying it from someone he knows. I'm just trying to show him some range of values so he can decide if it's a good deal or not. Ultimately, the market value is what he's willing to pay vs. what the other guy is willing to sell it for. I'm just here to pour cold water on the process and trade emotion for hard data.

Thanks for the various links and articles. I've given it to him in a nice bundle. I think he's looking at the car again tomorrow. If I'm around, I'll go with him. Will report back either way ('cause everyone loves an update).
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
The car is a 2002 Legacy L wagon, silver/grey, automatic/awd, 57k miles, pwr stuff, nothing fancy just a nice ex-rental. She paid $13k for it in June of last year when it had 30k on it.

Hitting moose is an everyday thing, I'd imagine several get hit per day. Usually about 500 or so throughout the state during the winter months, this year has been rough with the horrible cold and deep snow.

I almost got one the other day with the rental Escape, can't imagine hitting one with Zippy......OUCH!

Looking to trade my 1999 Acura TL.

    64,000 miles (mostly highway commuting)
    Front brakes done at 42,000
New original equipment Michelins @ 52,000
    Laguna green w/green leather interior
Exterior - never hit, only a few very minor dings
Interior - nonsmoker, no kids or pets, perfect
    6 CD changer

Considering trading this to an Acura dealer. Have already negotiated the price on a 2005 RL. Just looking to not get scalped. Thanks for your input.

Hi, anyone know the real trade-in value of a 2004 Acura TSX 5psd NonNAV Satin Silver in the Rockland, NY area?

    It has 14000 miles.
Car does not need to be reconditioned.
    Exterior - Zero dings/dents.
    Interior - Still smells new.

Is it also possible to trade down? I'm looking to trade it in for a commuter car. Thanks.

I'm looking at this car for my wife:

    95 Cadillac Fleetwood
Champagne (looks silver to me) with light grey leather interior
    90K one owner miles
All options except CD and moonroof
    LT-1/auto
    New tires and battery

    Car is in Columbia, SC

These people live two doors down from me and the car is the closest thing to factory fresh that I've seen in a looong time. The guy is meticulous with the maintenace.

He's asking $6,0. Is that a reasonable price? I was thinking more $5,0.

    Terry,
I'm looking to trade or sell a 1999 4x4 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo; I'm in the Chicago area.
    Engine: 4.0 i6
    54,000 miles
    Quadra-Trac transfer case
    Leather
    Heated Power Seats
    Infinity Sound System
    Moonroof
Clean interior a few minor scratches on the exterior
New brakes all around and about 7k miles on tires.
    Whaddya think?
    =========================

What do I think ..? ... I think there's no bones in ice cream, thats what I think ..

Another Chi-town person .. is everyone trading up and buying new vehicles..?

This one is a 99 Jeepster 4x4 GC Laredo with 54 tiny klicks, we have the 4.0, the leather, cold pack, big tunes, new stoppers and the slider ..

If we haven't been over to any of the paint parties lately, the rubber is deep, no click click in the 4x4 and it looks/feels and drives like an 03 .. then trade side, in and around the mid/high $7's, might maybe get reeeal lucky and have someone drop the low low low 8's in it, -if- it's super nice, super clean and it needs -0- ....

Down Retail Rd .. finish any service, a superb detail, a Donald Trump Ad - $10,495 *asking* a hop and a jump later, and ~ $9,5/$9,9 gets a new owner ...

Those people must be doing some real good extasey before they go into the those auctions, because most vehicles are doing 15/20% more than last year ... Nomads for $130,000 ...?!? ---- Yowzaa.!!

Of course, who would have ever thought that guys like Paul Yaffe, Billy Lane and Eddie Trotta would be getting $50 grand a pop for motorcycles 5 years ago ...? - and lets not forget my hero Indian Larry, who unfortunately passed away last August: www.IndianLarry.com ................... :(

    Terry,

    THANK YOU!!!

I passed on the '02 530i. It lacked the sports package. I found another, though. Here are the specs:

    2001, BMW 530i
Are you sitting - 12,300 miles!!!
Lease return to our local dealer
    Silver with black interior
    Premium/Sports package
    No CD player

Asking = $33,990. I offered a lower price and was told to forget negotiating. The car was just returned. Received an email from the dealer today saying he'd give it to me for $33,290. Realistically, I'd rather pay $31,990 to feel good about it.

Any pointers on how to get them down a little before this bad boy is nabbed by someone else who sees the low mileage?

    Thanks, Terry!

In addition to the question, "is it CPO", I'd add: Have you done a Carfax? Have you done a search on the repair/maintenence history? Can you take it to a great body shop before purchase to have it checked out?

It could be really sweet, but it "could" be a Lemon Buyback, have some wierd history, etc. Why don't you put down a $500 deposit if you think it's worth the price while you get it checked out?

Of course, then there's the question of whether paying $33,290 for a 4 y.o. BMW is a great idea. (I paid about that for a 2 y.o. E39 528i w/CPO and super low miles). Also, you could buy a brand new Acura TL for that, w/warranty up the wazoo, etc......... ("up the wazoo" is the best kind of warranty I believe).....

Terry - this is an odd one, I know. Porsche dealer took a 2004 Lamborghini Gallardo on trade-in Friday night. They are planning to wholesale it as soon as the title comes in. I am interested if I can get a killer deal, a little over wholesale. They are going to list it at $159,900 and see if anyone bites but they won't tell me what their wholesale number is - and if they did I prob wouldn't believe them.

    2004 Gallardo
    Yellow with black leather interior
    only options are:
    yellow deviated stitching
    e-gear
    643 miles
    still appears in perfect condition

will make an offer just above whatever wholesale number you give me

    thanks

Nice car, but it is black and in Florida, has 150K on the ticker, and it is nearing the 10 year old mark. Were you wanting trade or private party numbers.

Any dealer that you try and trade it off is going to give you minimum expected auction numbers as they will send it off due to the miles. Definitely should look at selling it yourself. You will have to do some preliminary work to sell it for top dollar with those miles. Super detail inside and out. A full mechanical inspection check list by a Toyota dealer after all the maintenance is completely up to date. Plus should have new tires and maybe a newer battery.

The number, I don't know Florida's market. N.E. Indiana, Toyota's like that have a limited value as most of the buy here pay here crowd wants a Chevy, or a pick'em'up' at the trailer park truck. It would not bring $3,000 around here with those miles and the Toyota name.

You just might want to shop it around for a cash buy price at several corner lots that specialize in higher mileage older cars like yours in your area before going to try and trade it in. A 10 year old 150K Toyota is going to be very much dependent on condition for its value. The greater the availability of maintenance records from day one, the better the value, at least to a private party sale.

Hey Chris ... so you think it's pretty nice..? .. that means no Swiss Army knife interior, no click click in the 4x4, serviced, deep sneakers, no paint by numbers, no Moose attacks and it looks/drives and feels like a 03, plus this one has low miles for the year, the right color and the hardtop ... so if it's a nice one, then trade side, in and around the low/mid $10's, might find someone in Boston to wander towards the $11 figure if it's puuuurfect, glows in the dark and needs -0- .....

    Don't forget the update ....... :)

    #25240 of 25259 95 Cadillac Fleetwood by Turboshadow Feb 25, 2005 (6:07 pm)

I'm looking at this car for my wife:
    95 Cadillac Fleetwood
Champagne (looks silver to me) with light grey leather interior
    90K one owner miles
All options except CD and moonroof
    LT-1/auto
    New tires and battery
    Car is in Columbia, SC
These people live two doors down from me and the car is the closest thing to factory fresh that I've seen in a looong time. The guy is meticulous with the maintenance.
He's asking $6,0. Is that a reasonable price? I was thinking more $5,0.

Might be a nice driver in SC ... right color inside and out, and if all the K work has been done, all the belts, deep round things, seats look hovered in, Polar air, no K-mart collisions and has all that pride of ownership stuff .... then certain dealers "might" pay the super tall $3's low $4's for it, even with 90k .. I've seen 9/11 victims do $3,0 ....... $6,0 ..? eh', he's not out of line if it's a nice one and $5,0 would be a steal if it's a baby doll .....

    Terry,
I am looking at a Demo BMW 330Ci with ~800 miles. What is a reasonable offer for it? The MSRP is $44k and the salesman offered it to me for $42.5k. How much of a discount can I expect for a demo BMW. From the BMW 3-series board, a good going rate for a new Bimmer seems to be around 2k off of MSRP. Can I get below invoice for the demo?
    Thanks,
    mabubba
    =========================

For starters, make sure it "is" a demo .. it could have been sold and traded already, even with 800 miles ...

If it is a factory demo, then check and see the "in service" date .. Bimmer dealers get a $800 kicker for demo's, this one doesn't seem to have many miles though .. I would want to be $200/$400 back of invoice, minus any incentives if it's been in play for 90 days or more ..

Good luck and let me know ...

Thinking about trading this for 2005 Avalon
    2002 black chevy avalanche
tan leather, michelins with 5k on them, interior hovered in, very clean, outside paint very glossy, no scratches, however a stone hit the vertical part of the hood and left a small dent but didnt affect the paint. This is in Atlanta and all service has been done to this one owner vehicle. it has 38,000 easy miles, my wife drives like molasses.it is 2 wheel drive and is not a Z71 or Z66. No wrecks paint work or other damages. The brakes havent been serviced and still stop efficiently with no noise or other issues. What kind of money can I expect on a trade- in?

Do you happen to own a Toyota dealership and if so are you selling the avalon for less than MSRP.

would Like to know my TRADE IN value for my MINI VAN
    LOCATION: SAN DIEGO CA
    2000 EX HONDA ODYSSEY
    51600 Miles on it
    White color
    Excellent condition
Had a minor accident with this car about two months ago.. the insurance company decided to fix it the part they replaced with all new was the back part of the car ( the trunk part) and all parts used in fixing the car are new according to the invoice from the body shop and the insurance company spent around $16K to repair it and now it look as new and there are no other problem with this car.. so what is the value of my trade in ... please let me know
    thanks

    ============================

Ok .. I give up, whats with the name..?

    **Had a minor accident**

    $16,000 ..?

    .. As in: Sixteen-thousand-dollars ------ American money...?

A minor accident is when someone runs their golf cart into your bumper .. a minor accident is when someone takes a right into the left turning lane and does a $1,900 "pop" to your front fender at 10mph .. a minor accident is when the blue hair lady at Wal-Mart lets her cart get away and it rolls down the side of a TL and it needs $2,500 of paintwork ..

    $16,000 ...?!?

.. I've known people to have brain surgery for less than that ......... YIKES.! .......

Who was the insurance company, Buford and Baffled..?? .. it was $12,000 vehicle and $13,0 on a push * Before the accident.! .. who was the body shop, Sabawi Ibrahim al-Hassan and his nifty friend Pablo..?

This thing should have been totaled a loooong time ago .... body shops, you gotta love em', they make car dealers look like the Pope ...

    Whats it worth now ..? .. pick a number ... $5,000/$8,000 ...? I wouldn't have a clue without seeing it ....

    $16,000 ....?!? .. oh .. my .. gawd ..

..... You know how that stuff goes, I'm up everyday at 5ish ... now the g/f, thats a whooole different story, she will do her little 10amish deal ~ by that time, I will have already wiped the boat down, cleaned the dock, read the paper, read 50 posts, answered a few, drank 10 cups of coffee and found out who's going to be golf partner today .. then she will ask me, what are "we" doing today..? .. We..? .. she must have a guest in them jeans of hers ................................... ;)

Anywho ..... to answer your last question - No.!

In Hotlanta ... we have a 2wd Avalanche, it's black and no help there - tan guts help .. but, now is the time to unload that color before you start that 85+ degree weather, the miles are low for the year, serviced, we have a baby kiss from Santa ... if it's as nice as you think it is, then trade side .. in and around the low/mid $17's, might get someone to travel towards the $18 figure if it's a class act and it needs -0- ....

    don't forget the update ....

I went to the Mazda dealership yesterday and picked up the 3i 4dr auto/sport for $16500 and traded in my TSX for $21K ($400 over Galves' estimate). Its actually not bad if you count the tax savings. Its like I sold my car for $22379.

    Terry,

    Looking for your opinion ..

    Chicago burbs (north)
    2003 Camry XLE (4 cyl)
    37K miles
    Black Exterior/Tan leather int.
    Front and Side airbags
    Heated front seats
    Alloy wheels
    Moon roof

All service done at Toyota dealer (every 5k oil changes, 10 k tire rotates + 15k and 30k services). I have all the receipts.

Tires are starting to look pretty worn .. I'm open to putting new ones on if you think it is pays to (about $400-500 to put new rubber)

Breaks -- still originals, no noticeable problems.

Body in good shape and interior pretty good (no kids, non-smoker, no rips)

    Thanks in advance ..

    Terry ,
Your opinion on this as a trade or down retail road.

    Location: Philadelphia
    Year/Make/Model:2002 Dodge Durango SLT
    Body Style: 4 Door wagon
    Engine: 4.7l ,5 speed Automatic
    Drive line: 4WD
    Mileage:36,500 miles
Color: Black exterior / Gray cloth interior
Major Options: Cd , Running boards, 16' alloy wheels,3 rd row seat, power windows & locks, keyless remote
    Condition:
Exterior has several nicks , but they have been touched up and are not noticeable, Hand washed every week and gets a good detail every 4 mos. ,so no swirlies in the paint.
Interior gets the same shampoo and cleaning every 4 mos.,no rips but drivers mat is a little worn.

Tires - 100%,just replaced this week with new original equip. Goodyears.
Brakes - Less than 6,000 miles on new rotors. Pads are still good.
Maintenance - oil changed every 3k, 30k service is done, everything done by the book, and Ball joint recall has been taken care of.
Other: No accidents or repaints. It has been well taken care of both mechanically and appearance wise.

Because I am starting to put on more miles per year than previously , I am going to down size to either a used 2003 Pontiac Vibe or Ford Escape XLT(2wd)with about the same miles, hopefully as even up as possible. Any input on those would be appreciated.

    Thanks again.

Terry - Don't worry about the numbers on the gallardo. Wife informed me that no matter how good a deal it is NOT in the budget.

Um - when you are considering a used $150K vehicle, do you really have to worry about a budget??

I forgot to pass on a very valuable lesson I learned my first year in the car business, when I went to my wife, asking her if I could buy a new motorcycle, a 1993 Kawasaki ZX-11 ....unfortunately, I asked her on her birthday, and she lost her danged mind on me.

My boss at the dealership told me something that I took to heart and have passed on many times:

"It's easier to get forgiveness than permission"

If you ask or discuss, she'll just say "no" - if it's already a done deal, all she can do is forgive you (or not).
