You asked your wife for a motorcycle, on HER birthday, and you thing SHE's the one that's lost her danged mind? Just be glad you didn't come home with it and ask for permission on her birthday. Those alimony payments get expensive.

I think I've got a similar situation here. My buddy didn't want to talk about going to see the Jag yesterday. I think his wife found out about it...

Terry, after some careful and deep thought, (and just maybe, some fatherly advice) my son has decided to stay with his '01 Civic, rather than take on payments on a new Vibe ...thanks for your input...However, my older daughter, who CAN afford to take on payments, (has a good
post-college job) decided she could go for a new car...see next post.

I had talked to her about a few weeks before, it was all cool, but I certainly should have picked a better day to bring it home - I got a $9,000 bike, and all I got her for her birthday was dinner and a watch....

You hit the nail on the head!!!

I bought my Wrangler this weekend. The first number they used for my Trade in was 6700 (exactly what you said). After dickering with the guy for about 2.5 hours i walked out of there with a price $30 a month lower than thier original first run number.
After going over the final number on the purchase order i noticed they raised my trade in value up to 8,055, i laughed to myself because once again Terry you nailed it.

Thanks Man, and to everyone else don't bother looking anywhere else Edmunds.com and Terry are all ya need!!!

Well, the E39 5-Series is a really nice car, the best all around car I've ever owned. An extremely "well balanced" vehicle with tons of safety features, plus built like a brick outhouse to begin with. CR even says they are pretty reliable (altho there are well documented issues with the cooling systems & possibly the auto trans. as they get lots of miles).

Hey, the Inline 6, bmw's been doing it forever. Just DON'T try to drive w/o snow tires, ever, in more than 1 inch of snow. Good luck!

    Hi Terry,

I bought my Jag S-Type 3 weeks ago thinking I would still keep the Mustang. After 3 weeks in the Jag, I don't really want to go back to the Mustang anymore, so can you help with the value?

    Southern Cal
    2002 Ford Mustang, V6 premium.
    Manual, 3.8 liter.
    47,000 miles
    White exterior/beige interior, no leather
Major Options- CD changer, Mach Audio System 460 Watts. Rear wing, tinted windows, 16 inch wheels. Leather wrapped steering wheel.

Very clean interior, exterior is very good but there's a dent on the driver's door, not really noticeable though. A very small scratch on the front bumper.
    Tires/brakes - 80% left.

All servicing records, mostly done at Ford dealership.

The high mileage and manual tranny will probably make it difficult, but this has been a very very reliable car, not even one malfunction, a lot of power, no accidents.

What can I expect for trade-in?

Well ... all except for this minor itsy bitsy $5,000 kiss on the nose of this dude, other than that ~ it's just perfect .l.o.l.. at least the miles are low, good color, auto LX .... it's hard to put a figure on a vehicle like this without really seeing it, does it show on the Carsmack.? ... trade side, it could be worth $10, it could be worth $13, it's hard to say ..

It's kinda like my buddy's house that was smacked by the hurricanes .. other than a non-matching partial new roof, some new partial windows, some concrete work done by the pool and the patio screening that doesn't match ~ it looks just perfect .................. ;^} ..

Morning Jeff .... aah, the Tucson Open ....

It's a 02 LX, we got the auto thing, 55k, slider, power pack, tunes, sneakers and the stoppers are ok, we have a good color for the area and hopefully cold breeze ..... these little Protege's still do some money, you know the deal, if it's nice, blah blah blah .. trade side, in and around the mid/tall $5's, might maybe get a dealer to wander towards the low low low low low low $6's, maybe .. but the miles will probably hold this one back ..

Down Retail Rd - ya know the deal ~ super bath, super ad, super history .. $8,900 *asking* kick the ego, and kick it off the driveway at the first $7,5/$8,5 ... probably won't last long if done properly ..... my guess: $7,900 will be the target price ..

    Don't forget the update.....

    Excellent vehicles ...!

These little dudes get some $$ ... they gotta be perfect - and I do mean puuuurfect to get the "big" money and this one has no miles ... a new fender and a painted door can cost $10 large on the trade side .... $30 grand would be a flat steal, but I have a feeling it will take $32/$33ish to make it happen ..

I had a 50k "97" come in last month, not a perfect vehicle, nice - but not pampered, it needed some stuff like rubber and some service, nice paint, but the interior was just kinda less than average .. I ran it thru Hotlanta and it did $37,5 and you would have thought I had a Piaget in the console, it did *ALL* the money ............. ;)

    Terry,

I am looking at the following car:
    Location: Washington DC area
    2001 Saab 9-3 SE
    4dr hatch
    2.0L HOT turbo
    44K miles
    Black out, tan leather in
    Auto
    Sunroof
    Power everything
    Premium Sound
    Clean with all maint. records

No major dings, new rubber and brakes

Here is the kicker: the current owner claims it is worth $16000, because that is what he owes. I can buy an '02 certified for that. I offerred 11K based on KBB and edmunds TMV. However, everyone knows that the Terry market value is more accurate.

i thought i would get that - but you don't make money by being frivolous or careless. my wife even at times gets annoyed with me because i am always trying to get "the best deal". it's more of a sickness than a good trait.

Oh trust me I understand that. I like the security of having money in the bank so I tend to be frugal in many ways.

    Hi Car Man,

I have a 1999 Toyota Solara SLE coupe in excellent condition. I bought the car when my credit & finances weren't as good as they are now. The interest rate is so high, I'll be paying double the KBB price ($7k) to the finance company.

Now that I have the remaining $13k due on the loan & the $ to pay for it, I don't know if I should pay off the car or trade it in and get a new vehicle.

    Can you help?

    Thanks,

Well, you should absolutely pay off, or at least pay down, the balance on the car since the interest rate must be horrible. Maybe you could refinance it to lower the rate.

I wouldn't trade it in and then roll the remaining debt ($6K) into the next car, because you won't be solving your problem.

Finally, unless you have a very good reason otherwise, I would keep this car because it will last a good long time and be cheap to maintain.

Hi Terry, it's trading time again! I'm looking for a dealer trade number on the following; 2004 Jeep Wrangler X, black, 5 speed, 6 cylinder, 8,800 miles, soft top, soft tinted windows, cd, air, sound package, wheel and tire group, no dings or scratches but the spare needs to be fixed. Thanks a million!

    Terry,

I'm reposting so you don't have to go back to add my two emails together:

    2001, BMW 530i
    12,300 miles
    Yes, CPO
    Automatic
    Silver with black interior
    Premium/Sports package
    No CD player
    No Nav
    Asking = $33,990.

I offered a lower price for this lease return and was told to forget negotiating. Then I received an email from the dealer today saying he'd give it to me for $33,290. Realistically, I'd rather pay $31,000 at most to feel good about it.

Any pointers on how to get them down a little before this bad boy is nabbed by someone else who sees the low mileage?

    Thanks, Terry!

Have you made at least one full year of payments on the car yet? What is the current state of your credit situation? Can you pay off your loan without interest penalty? Will your loan allow additional principal payments without extra fees or penalties? You need to give your loan agreement a super good look over and maybe call the lender.

Trading it in will kill you on additional loss of depriciation.

If you have not made at least one year of payments on the loan, I would (if possible) calculate out what principle payment you need to make now to have it paid off after you have finished one year of payments. At least that way you will show one full year of payments on time on your credit report.

No smoke..? depends on what your smokin' ... in Bears territory we have a 03 XLE 4 banger, we have 37k, good color for the area and nightmare to keep clean in all that snow, salt and slush, we gots the side balloons, bun warmers, slider, wheels, and the rubber is worn more than Dan Rather memory on how the story leaked out ...... other than the cookie snatchers and no visits to the "house of paint" .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $13's, might maybe "could" get reeeal lucky and have someone climb towards the $14 figure, maybe .. but I have a feelin' that the Snicker Bar wrappers and the weak rubber will hold it back ....

Terry .. thanks for the info. I'll let you know what I find (probably go out this weekend.)

BTW, what is your opinion on the tires, should I go ahead and spring for the extra $400 before trying to trade, or just let the dealer do it later. My gut tells me the dealer probably can get tires cheaper than me, so why bother, but if you think it holds me back from getting higher resale it might be worth it.

    Thanks again.

PS -- I'll make sure and get all those wrappers cleaned up prior to going in.

HA..! .... you probably thought I missed you ..

Waaay out there in the land of Washington .. we have a 98 Rodeo LS 4WD, we got some tall miles, but almost low for the year, good color for anywhere, we got some hydes, slider, boards, power pack, 1 guy behind the wheel, new round things, tunes and it sounds like you might have taken care of it ..

$1,500 on trade ...? is this thing all rusted, banged up and broken..? dealer probably doesn't have a home for it, so off to the auction it would go, it probably would see $3,0/$3,5ish there, at least ..... $1,500..? Am I missing something .?

Like to trade in for larger SUV but wondering how big a loss I could expect.
    thanks,

    2,500 miles ....?

.. in NYC, we have a 04 FX35 AWD, we have the touring package and maybe a few little baby kisses here and there, good color .... so trade side, in and around the super ultra tall $29's low/mid $30ish range, might maybe "could" get a dealer to stagger towards $31,0 because of the low low miles and the high high snow drifts ............................ ;)

I've got this info scattered over a few posts so I thought I'd consolidate it here:

2002 VW Passat GLS 4 cylinder Turbo-72,000 miles, Silverstone Gray-Black Leather, Heated seats, alloys, power sunroof, 5 speed, front wheel drive, excellent condition inside & out(glossy paint, no significant dings, etc..., interior immaculate). New tires @ 55,000 miles or so. All maintanence done per schedule.
    Located in Eastern Massachusetts.
    Thanks!

Sorry you got missed .. I've been hanging out with the Bingo crowd lately and we all went out and had tattoos done ...

It's a 02 GLS 4-banger with 72k and we have a handshaker, good color combo, bun warmers, wheels, slider, kinda new rubber and we live in Mass -- doesn't Theresa Heinz have a husband there..?

If all the K service has been done, no Freedom fries, no battles at Wal-mart, just a pretty nice little Passat ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $7's low/mid $8's, might get reeeal lucky and get a dealer to get into the low low low low (did I say low.?) low low low $9's ... the miles and the handshaker are going to slap ya right upside your head ...

Let me know how it goes ...

    Hi,
I'm thinking of purchasing a 1998 BMW 328iS coupe,6cyl,4speed automatic overdrive and with 150000 miles ..for 6000-6500$(Kelly Blue Book value 8200$)...is it a normal deal considering high milage of the car..what things I should look at before buying it?What major problems this car can have because of it's high milage? It's an individual selling this bimmer,I'm going to look at the car on saturday, checked carfax everything seems ok,owner has all the maintenance records,he's the second owner and was doing most of the highway miles from home to work.Does anyone have any experience in buying a high milage bimmer?Any suggestions?
