Dealers can ask what they want, getting it is another matter. KBB for average condition on your car only comes up with $4,300. It clearly is not excellent. I am not sure it can qualify as good in the real world with the aftermarket stuff on it.
Down retail road, $6,500 is all the money on that puppy.
Why are you looking at a Kia? Hyundai almost has turned around the reputation a little bit, but Kia?
By the way what do you mean...Down retail road? What the dealer will sell it for?
Thanks again,
Brian
P.S. On the price of the Sportage, I offered $500 over invoice ( I like no hassle and this is a new vehicle with no rebates) making it $22,2
00 when it comes times to negotiate further, if the trade isn't going up, do you think I should push for the other $500 on the new car price, thanks
Retail road: Actual cash in hand relatively quick sell if you were to sell the car yourself, or other private party sale. The only difference between you and a corner lot is selection. Some corner lots, not many, offer some kind of warranty on some of the used cars.
4 years or less, why not go with a certified used vehicle with warranty? A 100K Sportage is worth very little. A 125K Honda or Toyota 4X4 is still worth some good change when properly maintained. Even the GMC Envoy seems to be holding some decent value in the 4X4 arena.
P.S. as far as the aftermarket goes, I could just remove all of it if that is their complaint.
P.P.S I will not buy anything from GM, they, without a doubt, make the worst cars on the road, Ford coming in just behind
As long as you know up front the pro and con of any decision, don't get all upset.
If you want new, great. If you want to look at saving some cash, consider waiting for the same vehicle ever so slightly used. I saved $4,500 on a used vehicle with 3,100 miles on it and it had the same warranty as the new one.
You will be living in this vehicle for the next several years. See if you can take it home for the weekend before buying it, or drive it over several different days and road conditions.
A good customer of mine has a 03 Sportage.
63k miles and needs a $1800 rear end repair.
She sure laments about the 120k troublefree miles she got out of her cavilier!
Her husband laughs and sez she should of bought a toyota !
I am real happy with it. I forgot to mention that it has a brand new set of tires as well!
Thanks again for all of your help...I know that everyone here feels the same way I do.
And the recent cavaliers are actually fairly trouble free.
I know you want a six, but take a look at a Subaru Forester.
I just found this board and the timing is perfect so..... by the way I live in Pittsburgh, PA
I have a Pearl White 2001 Hyundai Sonata GLS (V6) w/Leather Package
It has 90,500 Miles
Options :
Leather
Power Driver Seat
Power Everything (Heated Mirrors, windows, ect)
Aftermarket Keyless Entry w/Alarm
Tilt/Slide Sunroof w/Deflector
Aftermarket Taillight Chrome Trim
Aftermarket Tinted Windows
Alloy Wheels
AM/FM/CD/Cassette (I actually have a very expensive aftermarket stereo in now, but they never give you what that is worth)
K&N Air Filter
Aftermarket Woodgrain Dash Inserts
....I think that about covers it, It has every option that was available at the time except for ABS and TCS
It is very good condition, no extraordinary wear ...I recently put in some new items (New Tires Nov. , new plugs and plug wires (last week), new front and rear brake pads) I have taken good care of it, used mobile tri-synthetic oil, etc.
I am looking to purchase a 2005 Kia Sportage 4x4 Ex with Luxury Package (Basically the most expensive one) I have agreed with the woman
on the sale price, but the trade is the negotiation point..... Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks a bunch (I realize it is Easter (Happy Easter), but if you get a chance to read this by Monday, that would be great). thanks again, Brian
=============================
Good morning Brian ....
In the land of the "I coulda been a contender" Stealers ...
We have an 01 Hoon-die Sonata GLS with 91k .. ~Wow~ 91k, almost a record breaker, don't see many Hyun/Kias that make it to the 90/100k region (this one must have been built in Rome and blessed by the Pope) we got the V6 and the leather deal, power pack, slider, new round things and the aftermarket tunes .... if it hasn't been to the Maaco museum, no rust, no food fights at the Eat'n Park, the seats don't have that Taliban look, cold breeze, it's 110% serviced, it looks/feels and drives like 35k, if so ... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $2's, might maybe "could" on a good day and with the proper alignment with Saturn see a dealer stagger towards the $3,0 figure, maybe ....
$5,500...?!? .. not in this universe (or any other) the dealers in your area are hardly paying $4,0 for the 35kers .... I admire your support and your devotion to the product, but come on, April Fools day is still a few days away ...................
Don't forget to let me know ...
Terry.
PS: pull the aftermarket tunes n' stuff and drop the factory stuff back in, they are *meaningless* to a dealer .....
I just heard from my friend (the one with the 2002 Ford Focus ZX5 that was rolled in central Illinois) and the insurance company is going to cut her a check for $12K! Needless to say, she is happy with that.
Thanks for your help!
Paul
a 2003/2004 ford escape will get you the V6 that you want, allow for lots of extra equipment, and keep your 4x4 price in and around the tall teens with average miles.
if you have reservations about a used car's longevity and maintenance, then go to the Certified Pre-Owned route.
right now, ford motor credit offers 4.5% up to 60 months on the CPO escapes, and you get a 75k mile warranty.
What is this? Pick on Cavalier time? My mom got 207,598 miles out of her 1996 Cavalier before she got rid of it (on my urging), she was still commuting 150 miles/day with it. Only replaced a starter, battery, and fuel pump other than regular upkeep stuff.
I admire your devotion to the Kia/Hyundai product, I actually considered a Hyundai once but shyed from it due to the reputation. Bought a Yota instead. I currently commute 165 miles/day with a 2004 Ford Focus ZX3, great little car too, no trouble at all.
I find it exceptionally ironic that a Hyundai owner has the reasoning to slam ANY other make of vehicle on reliability...
My "thrifty" teacher cousins have a few troublefree high mileage cavs they bought new and then passed them down to their kids............
My 2 older boys each have 97 & 98 cavs that I bought used on the cheap for them.
Both have bags, ABS, and side impact beams and neither car has had any repairs except for reg. cheap maint.........
The 99 kia was a nightmare. I got stuck with after I co-signed for it and the girl walked away from it because it spent MANY days in the shop.
I ATE that one because NO one would buy it or take it in trade and I didn't want to ruin MY credit.
How about a used Suzuki xr-7 SUV or its Chevy Tracker clone? VERY reasonable used and more dependable IMO...................
Very reasonable
The Cavalier, like the Chevette before it, is pretty reliable IF AND ONLY IF you perform the required maintenance on the vehicle - namely, getting the oil changed on a routine basis.
In the late 70's and early '80s. I had a lot of friends who saw their Chevette die a painful and early death as the folks never changes the oil. Maybe topping off the oil on a Toronado was OK but the smaller engine would not take the abuse.
I guess there have to be Kia lovers in the world. I heard a caller on Car Talk who was in love with his old Yugo......& some people "collect" old AMC Gremlins.....
It's his money - let him spend it how he wants.
Now regarding the resale value of his current miled up Hyundai - what you get up front you lose on the backside...
you havent been paying attantion have you?
a ford escape with 4x4, leather, and a V6 goes for about $25k.with rebates and at invoice, you can get one for around $21k-$22k. thats a no-brainer to me.
Yes I have. He said he drives 20K miles per year and stated the standard warranty on other vehicles would be gone in 18 months. He also stated the other vehicle with the same warranty is a Mitsubishi but wasn't interested in one.
If the engine won't start or the tranny won't shift because of some computer (or solenoid, or sensor, etc) problem, that's coming out of your pocket.
1999 Dodge Neon Sport 4 door
5 spd
DOHC 150 HP engine
Eyeball searing blue
94k miles
Exterior looks ok, except for a minor smack to the driver's side headlight area. Looks a bit like it has a black eye. He never got it fixed, not sure if he got an estimate on it or not. Hood closes fine, there's a little damage to the radiator support.
PW, PL, CD, aftermarket keyless entry
Stock moonroof never really worked right, completely non-functional now.
Interior OK, but my bro's a big boy (he's not heavy, he's my brother) so the driver's seat is pretty squashed
Decent tires
Not sure on maintenance. I know it's had at least 1 head gasket (what Neon hasn't) and the motor mounts done.
Not a lot of good news, I know. I hope I didn't make it sound too nice. He's looking at basic 4 banger '03-04 Aleros GLs as a replacement. What's a good number for a fairly low miler? There's a Gold/beige '03 with 15k miles with auto at a local dealer for $8900. In the ballpark?
Edit: Both are in the SLC, UT area
Thanks,
-Jason
LOL, my mom did anything BUT take good care of that car. The oil got changed MAYBE every 10k-15k IF the car was lucky (not synthetic either), the coolant was a mix of orange and green, the transmission fluid didn't get changed until the car had 175k on it.........you get the picture. That car is still running and going down the road, just not with her.
2003 Toyota Matrix XRS - 6 Speed
Only came in a Wagon and Front wheel drive for the XRS.
Mileage: 17400
Color: Indigo Ink (dark blue) outside Black leather/suede inside (Gulf States Toyota option)
Options - Power moonroof, Factory Navigation system, Tinted Windows, Side Airbags, Factory keyless entry. 4 wheel disc ABS is standard as are the 16 inch alloys. Tires are about 50%. All service has been done (3 month oil changes with Mobil 1, never hit miles) and I have the paperwork in the glovebox. Interior is hovered in. Exterior has one ding driver side front quarter panel (I miss having a Saturn). Front lip is a little scuffed, though it can only be seen if you're under the car. I had one door ding near the drivers door egde that required painting the entire side of the car. It was done at Service King (major repair chain in DFW) when the car was just one month old. I didn't pay for it, the idiot who dinged me did. Everything else is fine. It has been garaged whenever not in use (which is often given the low miles). I'd like the retail row and trade in. I know the 6 speed will hold it back, but it's the only way they come now.
We have a Honda Civic '98 that we'd like to put up for sale on the paper. It's a silver 4dr with 73k miles, auto, cassete, electric windows & locks, ps, pb, airbags. Tires 80% left, brake pads 50% left. All maintenance records. It has a bumper repair on record (back one, dinged while parked) that was replaced new and is unnoticeable (but will probably come up on carfax, as it was an insurance claim). It has no problems we are aware of and still pulls strong and shifts smoothly. We are located in Los Angeles.
What is a good asking price? What is a reasonable selling price?
Thanks,
-Julio.

What's my retail road number? (I won't ask if I'm insane -- I don't want the answer) KBB lists it private party for 23,960 or so... What's for real?
If I go insane and do trade it -- what might I expect?
Got a local dealer with three base 04 350Z all still with under 100 miles on them. Buying side, what would be a good ballpark. MSRP is 26,700 - Dealer says there is 1k rebate. Sunny Norman, OK.
Thanks!

Edmunds TMV and KBB trade-in are both about $7100. NADA says $8600. Wondering what the reality is.

what's a good price on the g35?
what's a good trade or private sale on the accord? Thanks in advance guys
What is it worth, -$100 to maybe $750 trade side.
Yes, I really mean it might cost you money to have the dealer dispose of the car for you.
I put it on the lawn with a sign asking $4500, waited a week with only tire kickers to show for it, so then i listed it on autotrader. I know, i know, you always say to use the paper, but its just so expensive for one day of exposure. Anyway, got about 3 bites from autotrader over the following week. Ultimately, a gentleman who lives around the corner saw it on the lawn and bought it for $4K. I just hope there will be no future hassles from having the buyer live so close. I think this is the last time I will sell a car this way. Its worth not dealing with the stress to just trade it in and take a hit. People are strange and I'd rather lose money than deal with these people coming to my house.

That is why I like Carmax.

Too many bad checks....too many people giving me $100 to hold the car for them and coming back 6 months later, stating they're ready to buy the car....finding it long gone and wanting their $100 back (plus interest).
Too many 16-17 year olds wanting to take it for a "test drive" and becoming obstinant when I insist on going with them (or worse, making them show me some greenbacks to see if they really can afford the car).....too many neighbors jumping on my case for having a for sale sign in the car parked in my driveway (I live around some snooty neighbors).
I may take a $1,000-$2000 hit by trading, but to me it's worth it.
How's that Z working out?
I promised you this update:
This is on the camry with 17K miles that I sold to Carmax for $11400 that needed light body work. I was offered 9k from the Subaru dealer.
It is currently listed on there web site as:
'02 Toyota Camry LE 4D Sedan $15,998 18K
I called them up and got the VIN number, and it is the car I sold them. So, I guess they took the $1600 rehab, had about 13K in the car, and are hoping to make 3K on in.
The stupid thing is that you can buy a new 2005 Camry LE for 17,900 at FITZMALL.com. And the '05 comes with power seats, which mine did not have.
Or the folks that will "take the vehicle off of your hands" for about 25% Edmunds TMV because Consumer Reports don't like the vehicle.

still puts a smile on my face every time. welll..... except when i couldn't get it home in the snow and had to leave it at my in-law's for a couple of days.
but, hey, that's why i still have the volvo. just gotta watch those weather reports more closely.

It's an 04 base Outback wagon with autodimming mirror/compass and all-weather floor mats. It's 4-cylinder with automatic transmission, AWD. It's light green and pearl white on the outside and beige inside, and has 6400 miles on it. The interior is pristine and the exterior is in great shape except for a small paint scratch on the front right bumper.
I am looking at trading this in for a Mazda3 or an MPV.
Thank you very much!

...also don't forget ABS brake plus $400 off for recent (will be) graduated.
That's the part I don't understand also. It's the same like some people who always think they get a good deal on a year old cars. I used to ask a toyota dealer why the 1 year old car is almost the same price as the new one's. He told me "Buy a new 1 then...someone will buy that car."
