My lease is just about up. I wouldn't mind keeping it, but I don't want to pay more than I could trade it in for. Here are the details:
Seattle, WA 2002 Subaru WRX 4dr wagon 2.0 liter 4 cyl. turbo AWD 18,000 miles Midnight blue exterior, black interior options include security system & upgraded stereo Condition: interior is very clean. Exterior is also very good except for a tattoo from a parallel parker--about 5 inches long. It hasn't needed any maintenance, tires and brakes are all average for the mileage.
My purchase option is for $13K. With WA tax, that's a bit over $14K out the door. The lease covers 45K miles. Let me know a fair trade in value. Thanks!
You will need to have the tatoo professionally fixed before turning it in. The leasing company will charge you about double the cost you could have had it fixed due to the damage.
Korean cars are bad when compared with the top cars in their respective classes. Sure it may look like a good deal coming out of a 99 Grand AM or a 95 Sportage but someone driving an ..... Accord for example ... would have a hard time believing your 01 Sonata is better than their Accord. Resale values for Kia/Hyundai are horrible and although they are "better" than they were, that's not saying much when where they were was the bottom of the barrel.
Why not try a 4 cylinder SUV. The CRV's engine competes very well with the smaller V6's offered by some of it's competition and the Forrester XT would obliterate pretty much everything in the small SUV class.
This will probably inspire another rant.........& now the guy's saying he may not buy a Korean car after all (???). Oh well, it's entertainment, of a sort. I don't think the facts have anything to do with it, in this case. Personally, I agree with you about the CRV & Forrester.

One of my best friends' girlfriend was complaining about her car and when I heard the symptoms (strange noises with the accelerator pedal pressed, and generally feeling slower) I checked the oil level. Sure enough, bone dry. She had no idea what oil was or how it was supposed to get there; "I thought you just have to put gas in it."
Benderofbows... My best friends coworker did exactly the same thing. She was married to a fairly well to do guy and he took care of the Jaguar that she had been driving. When they divorced, she bought a new Nissan Sentra and has had if for 12 years. She had the same experience; when the "red light" came on, she took it to the dealer and they said "when did you have your last oil change"? She gave them a blank stare. All she did was put gas in it.
Since I'm such a car nut, it's hard for me to imagine these things happening but it does. Actually, that lady is still driving the Sentra, thank goodness she didn't damage anything.
Back on topic.... not changing your oil will effect your resale value!

Looking for fair trade value for the above car in black with tan leather, shiftable automatic, sport suspension & 17" alloys, 54K miles, leather, roof, power everything, 4 disc changer (dolby surround sound blah blah blah), bun warmers, only 2000 miles on the tires, no dings. Dealer records from me (the second owner) and prior owner's service records show up on carfax, if that matters. Twin Cities area.
The 26K miler Pcar is at one of those high-line pre-owned car dealers, not an actual Porsche dealer. But you & I share the same feelings. I told him to go for the red one ONLY if those are the exact mods he would want for himself. There are so many different types of mods you can do - and most of the fun is figuring out which ones to do and then to actually install them yourself.
Terry - you out there to give him an idea on pricing???
OK, OK, I'll expand on the maintenance thing. I have performed all scheduled maintenance, and have changed the oil six times. It has not required any unplanned maintenance. I'll also admit that I'm not running on the original tank of gas, either.

I've been (and still am) in NC, but will be going back to VA this weekend. Been here for a month and a half. Tonight, the sister and I went out to cruise car lots, and this caught her eye. Tell me what you think Terry: In High Point, NC: 2004 Toyota Matrix XR, black on black not sure on the mileage, I'm gonna say at least 20k 1.8 liter 4 banger FWD automatic power windows, locks, mirrors am/fm/cd/cass power sun/moon/hole in the roof 16" alloys decent rubber, probably 70-75% body kit (or ground effects) factory fog lamps
not sure about other options, we're going to look it over better tomorrow and drive it. She really liked the looks of it, and it's the first thing that I've thought really suited her. It looked very clean, as a 2004 should.
Also, I'm still on the hunt, although the Orange Exploder is doing okay right now. I want something with better gas mileage, I've been getting 18 on the interstate. I did something I never thought I'd do tonight, I got behind the wheel of a brand new Hyundai Santa Fe. It was okay, but like the salesman said, I'm one of those who won't buy one because of ego.

Okay .... I give up ......... is it a Carrera 2 ...? .. maybe a 4 model ...?
No crystal balls here ..............................
Lets see here .... it's got 110k and spring has sprung up north and 4wd's in your area will start to lose their glamour ....
IF they took it on trade, they want to be at least $500/$900 "back" of auction $$ ...... I have a feelin' they don't have much more than $5,0 in it ... $6,5.?? ... sounds like all the money ......... :shades:
Terry, it sem that you have been away, so here is a repost of an update..I know you like updates.
Terry, you said:
"01 EX .. The miles ain't bad for the year, the color is not a helper, we have that movin' around thing between the seats, tinted lookers, all in all (based on what your telling me) it sounds like a pretty nice little Civic .... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $7's, might get reeeal lucky and see the low low low low low (did I say low?) low low $8's ...." ------------- Done deal, my son got $7,900 for the 01 Civic on trade for a new 05 Mazda3 hatchback 5spd, at $300 over invoice. (BTW, this is a nice little car!) When I posted asking for your advice, I didn't know the power locks on the Civic didn't work, and there was a 6 inch long crease in the front fender next to the right headlight. I think we "done good" !! And, yes, AZ is a tax on difference state.
I suppose there isn't much chance that the 3 will retain the value that the Civic did. Honda's do get crazy money....
Thanks again Terry, for your expert advice, and your wit.
Hi Terry, Recently bought a new car for my wife and am looking for private party numbers for her old car.
Located by San Jose, CA 1990 Honda Accord EX Sedan 2.2Liter I-4 Automatic 88,000 miles Black Ext/Tan Int. Power windows/locks, sunroof, AM/FM/Cassette, alloy wheels. Everything works. Michelin tires are about 1/2 worn New brakes about 20K miles (a few years) ago. New hoses under hood 20K/few years ago.
The interior is in pretty good condition. It's clean and everything works, no fry invasions.
The exterior is a different story...it's a bit beat up. There is a credit-card sized dent on the front passenger fender and the paint there is cracked. Front bumper looks like it had a few Wal-Mart kisses. The paint is glossy everywhere but there has been a lot of touched up spots (maybe 20, size of dimes).
A number for private party would be great. Thank you very much! Paul PS: We bought an 05 Accord EX Sedan in case you are curious
I currently have a 1997 GMC Jimmy SLT that I'm planning to trade in to get a New Honda Civic LX. How much can I expect to get out of this? I filled out a survey from one of the dealerships that explains pretty much the whole truck. Here is the survey, can you give me an estimate on what to expect?
Thanks
Vehicle Year/Make/Model: Color: 1997/GMC/Jimmy SLT Miles: 159000 VIN Number: Unavailable at this time License Number: Unavailable at this time License Expiration: 11/26/2005
Did you buy the vehicle new? No If no, is it rental return, lease return, other: No Please explain: Purchased this vehicle used about 25 months ago.
Has your vehicle ever been in an accident? No Cost of repairs? None Is there any existing damage to vehicle? Bumper has a dent and driver's seat has a 2-3inch tear (sort of patched) Where?
Who holds the title? Midwest Community Federal Credit Union Is title designated " Salvaged"? No When does the registration expire?
Service records available? Some Would you sell this vehicle to a friend or family member? Yes
Please tell us about the equipment in your vehicle.
Automatic or Manual Transmission? Cloth or Leather Seats? Automatic, Leather, 4X4, BFG All Terrain TA Tires, Hitch, SLT Package Air Conditioning? Yes Power Steering? Yes Power Windows? Yes Power Locks? Yes Tilt Wheel? Yes Cruise Control? Yes AM-FM Stereo? Yes Cassette? Yes CD (Single)? No CD (Changer)? No
Look at it this way: a Matrix or Rav4 should get better mileage than the Exploder, & be lots more reliable. But a black on black car in the Mid-South??--that interior is gonna be painful in the summer! I like the Ford for Toyota trade tho.
We put it on the market 4 weeks ago and sold it in 6 days. Sold it in Madison, WI and not Minneapolis (My parents rock!, They did the work while I cashed the check) Ran an ad for 12,750 and took 11,250. Thanks for your help.
Hi, I trying to figure out what my car is worth. It seems like there's a big range of what peolple are asking for similar cars.
Here's the info:
Minneapolis, MN 1996 Honda Civic EX 4dr Manual transmission 1.6 liter SOHC VTEC 110,000 miles Green exterior, tan interior ABS, factory cd changer Very clean inside and out. A couple small door dings in driver's door and tiny chips on the leading edge of the hood. No rust. Replaced front bumper and hood within first year due to minor accident Replaced front drivers quarter panel after being hit be a runnaway shopping cart 4 years ago. Tires have about 30% tread left. All scheduled mainenance performed (on schedule) at Honda dealer.
Looking to trade it in or sell (probably sell). What do you think?
If that was trade-in money, it sounds about right to me. But I'm certainly no expert. Personally, a Jimmy with 159K miles is about 19K past its life expectancy (I speak from the experience of having had 4 in the family and 4 in the "close friend" circle).
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
on that truck is to clean it up nicely and put a "for sale" sign on it and park it in front of your house or on a corner lot - you could ask $2,000-2,500, lose your ego for a bit (not that you're showing ego), and settle for $1500-2000 cash money from someone who needs a work vehicle.
It seems about $500 on the high side. Really. You got an over $1000 trade in offer on a domestic anything with 159K on it and it looks a bit beat up? Take it and run. It is not even like it gets 30+mpg which around here if it runs and gets that kind of mileage is moving fast. Gas just hit $2.49 gal for regular unleaded yesterday.
If you had those little cosmetic issues repaired, seat tear, etc, you could take the time and ask $2,200 and hope for an offer of $1500-1700 cash private party sale. But you better have a recent full mechanical inspection and all the maintenance records on the seat if you want to be able to sell it at all for any decent money. Drift is right on.
BTW you owe money on that vehicle with 159K? how much?
Actually Woody, it was my sister who was looking at the Matrix. We went up there today, and the price was $16,9, and they were giving her 1500 trade on her '93 SSEi Bonneville with 128k miles sight unseen. Still her debt to income ratio was too high, and they wanted her to have a cosigner. It was crazy, but she found out she likes it better than a PT Cruiser which was her first choice.
Now, Terry, I fell in love today, at least somewhat. Here is what I found, tell me if it's reasonable: In High Point NC, 2000 Toyota Tundra SR5 "Toyota Certified Used Car" Access Cab $15,990 (un-negotiated price) 57500 miles 4x2 4.7 V8 Automatic pwr windows, doorlocks, mirrors am/fm/cd/cassette sliding rear window alloy wheels tires will probably last another year body in good shape except this, which concerns me: on the front bumper, there is a hole which looks like a mouth on the front of the truck, and in the center is where the front tag would go. On either side of where the tag would go, inside the holes is surface rust, and lots of it. The interior of the truck appears clean, but it needs a good steam cleaning and detailing. I flipped up the back seat, and under it near the hinge appears to be either a) red clay mud or b) RUST residue.
The carfax on this thing came out clean, but do you think it's possible that this is a flood vehicle? Something just doesn't sit right with me about the interior. On the carfax it says it's been in NC all it's life, who knows. What do you think Terry, and all you other guys? I love the truck, but the rust outside and the interiour on a '00 with 57k miles worries me. I await your almighty opinion.
PS, if you want to look at the truck, it's listed on cars.com, and here is the URL: 2000 Toyota Tundra
This was my first vehicle purchase and needed something with supper low monthly payments and 4X4 so I did something stupid and now I'm paying for it
I bought the Jimmy 25 months ago on a 4 year loan and it had 114,000 miles on it. It got my payments down to $148 a month which at the time is what I needed becauase I was in school. But now I still owe $3170 on it and can only HOPE to get $1500 out of it. Anyway it was what I had to do at the time but now I got to pay for my problem I had back then.
I can't sell it privately because I don't currently have enough cash to pay the difference when I sell it to someone, unless I could find someone to actuall give me like $2500 for it or something.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.... I might just keep it for a while and try to pay it all as soon as I can and then sell it locally... unless I get some good suggestions from someone.
I will be in the market in the next 6 months to a year to pay cash for a used Toyota Land Cruiser ('98 to '00 model) or a BMW X5 ('00 or '01 model). Miles don't scare me, as long as the vehicle has been very well maintained. I'd like to stay in the 18K to 22K price range, and have a couple of questions.
1. You guys say that normally, a vehicle with over 75K doesn't retail - the dealer wholesales it, because no one will finance it, warranty it, etc. Does that hold true for high mile premium vehicles also?
2. Where to buy? Private party, Carmax, or regular dealer? Seems like the "valuemax" arm of Carmax has vehicles with over 60K miles - and often times they have Land Cruisers and BMW's for sale with higher miles.
3. Your personal opinion - Land Cruiser or BMW X5? Any reliability concerns I should be aware of?
4. Should I be able to negotiate a better deal since I can pay cash on the spot, or does that really matter?
A rusting bumper is not a big concern, I'd be concerned if it were part of the body. Also, truck frames tend to show *surface* rust after a couple of years. And, the seat hinges on my Altima rusted, and it wasn't a flood vehicle--some of the rust residue got on the white paint. Have it looked at by a trusted mechanic.
You didn't ask for my opinion but here it is anyway.
If you can afford to pay a few bucks extra on the $148 every month - DO IT!! Pay this vehicle off as quickly as you can. Someone, somewhere will allow you to roll over your negative equity into a new loan but I wouldn't do it - it's the start of a bad trend.
Just live with the decision you made and get through it.
I'm not a car dealer but I've been hanging around here too long.
1. You guys say that normally, a vehicle with over 75K doesn't retail - the dealer wholesales it, because no one will finance it, warranty it, etc. Does that hold true for high mile premium vehicles also?
Even more so - premium marque dealers don't want milers on their lot unless they look really nice and they can make some good money on them. I know my local Honda emporium (not quite the same) usually has a couple of extra nice 7-10 YO Accords on the lot but these are beauties.
2. Where to buy? Private party, Carmax, or regular dealer? Seems like the "valuemax" arm of Carmax has vehicles with over 60K miles - and often times they have Land Cruisers and BMW's for sale with higher miles
If Carmax has them and the price is right - go for it.
3. Your personal opinion - Land Cruiser or BMW X5? Any reliability concerns I should be aware of?
I go for the Yota.
4. Should I be able to negotiate a better deal since I can pay cash on the spot, or does that really matter?
Private Party - Terry always says that Cash In Fist seems to work wonders!!
Dealer - cash sales don't earn fees for them on financing. You might get a better selling price if you finance and then you could always pay it off in a couple-three months.
Location: 25401 (martinsburg, wv) 2000 GMC Yukon 5.3L engine, 2WD, electronic traction control, CD, Cassette, Running boards, rear air AND rear heat. Bright red w/ silver bottom (beautiful color, and not many of them around). 96K miles. Absolutely perfect condition (well okay, maybe 98-99% condition All maint records, all oil change records, Michelin Cross Terrains with 70% of tread left, good brakes.
I owe nothing on it; and I'm paying cash for my next vehicle - so I'm probably looking at either selling it to Carmax or Retail Road. What's the verdict; friends?
I don't know the prices on these, but I have owned a couple of 10 y.o. Toyotas, both with no rust. I'd say, trust your instincts, & keep looking. An '00 with 57k miles shouldn't have rust.....& don't buy one with a funky looking interior unless that's what you want.
If you're buying a higher mileage one with little or no warranty, it's a no brainer: get the Land Crusher. Great vehicles! I love bmw's, including the X5, but the X5 hasn't been the most reliable bmw made. There are some bmw's I'd buy with high miles, maybe, but not an X5.
Here is the best you can do. $3100 divided by 10 months is approximately $340 per month. You need to pay that amount to have it paid off in time for the next big snow. Keep the vehicle as clean and up to date on maintenance as you possibly can. If it still looks as good as it does now and you still have all the maintenance records available and is mechanically good running condition in 4x4, the best time to put it in the paper is over a two week period during the first big snowstorm next winter. Advertise it as the first $2,000 drives this 4x4 home in the snow, it will sell for a few hundred dollars more money during the winter versus spring time. Then you will have ~$2,000 for a cash down payment ready to roll on your next car.
1998 Exploder Sport 2 dr. 2 wd V-6 , auto, full power, sunroof New brakes and service...THIN tires 82k miles No sale green, Tan cloth guts.......... Good condition In and out........
The guy's from Houston, 50 miles from my hometown of Lake Jackson - for the record, I had never seen snow until I was 21, so the chance of ANY snow, especially BIG snow, in Houston is a trillion to one - you'd have better odds buying lottery tickets.

But just imagine if it did snow in Houston - he'd have a line a mile long to buy that sled!!
LOL, I second that!!! Terry doesn't need a life.........he has US!!! :P
Oh yeah and I need a trade value on this.........its not mine I swear, have a debate going on with a co-worker who is trying to tell me its worth more than mine because hers only has 2k miles on it vs the 7k on mine. She's looking to trade it, I told her she's gonna need some heavy equipment and a lotta $$$ to get out of this beast.
2004 Titan XE king cab 4x4, Canteen green/grey guts, no options (no big tow, off road, no nothing), all it has is the base XE options (not sure what they are, but it doesn't have power anything). She has a hole in the front bumper by the tow hooks (about the size of a baseball) and a scratch on the driver's side door (about 3-4 inches long). Has all of 2k miles on it. Oh and she owes $32k on it (I owe real close to that on my LE).
I'm thinking $18-19k in trade MAYBE, she's thinking its worth $25k or so on trade, so what say the master??
Great forum and great advice here. I will be in the market in the next 6 months to a year to pay cash for a used Toyota Land Cruiser ('98 to '00 model) or a BMW X5 ('00 or '01 model). Cash is no big deal, dealers prefer the finance route ....
Land Cruiser or BMW X5?
As far as reliabilty: Land Cruiser ... as far as resale: Land Cruiser ... as far as the cost of maintence over the long haul: Land Cruiser ... trying to unload a high mileage Bimmer is like trying to unload a fat girl, a few lookers and even fewer takers, plus the "books" give a false value at trade or sale time on high mileage Bimmers, and you can end up at the garden department at Home Depot if your not careful .... most folks have little or no fear of a high mileage Land Cruiser, and they do some serious money with 60k or 160k ...
Lets be honest here, what sells a "high mileage" Bimmer is not the reliabilty factor or those cheap oil changes, it's those three little letters - BMW .. and folks in the know, and buyers that know the market understand what that can stand for: Big Major Wegie .........................................
PS: where to buy one ..? .. watch the papers and try the private sellers first, keep an eye on ebay -but not- any farther than you can drive comfortably and still keep control of the feely touchy thing .....

Why not try a 4 cylinder SUV. The CRV's engine competes very well with the smaller V6's offered by some of it's competition and the Forrester XT would obliterate pretty much everything in the small SUV class.

Okay .... I give up ......... is it a Carrera 2 ...? .. maybe a 4 model ...?
No crystal balls here ..............................
Terry.
:shades:
Terry.
Terry, you said:
"01 EX .. The miles ain't bad for the year, the color is not a helper, we have that movin' around thing between the seats, tinted lookers, all in all (based on what your telling me) it sounds like a pretty nice little Civic .... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $7's, might get reeeal lucky and see the low low low low low (did I say low?) low low $8's ...."
-------------
Done deal, my son got $7,900 for the 01 Civic on trade for a new 05 Mazda3 hatchback 5spd, at $300 over invoice.
Jeff
Recently bought a new car for my wife and am looking for private party numbers for her old car.
Located by San Jose, CA
1990 Honda Accord EX Sedan
2.2Liter I-4 Automatic
88,000 miles
Black Ext/Tan Int.
Power windows/locks, sunroof, AM/FM/Cassette, alloy wheels. Everything works.
Michelin tires are about 1/2 worn
New brakes about 20K miles (a few years) ago.
Paul
PS: We bought an 05 Accord EX Sedan in case you are curious
Thanks

BTW you owe money on that vehicle with 159K? how much?
Now, Terry, I fell in love today, at least somewhat. Here is what I found, tell me if it's reasonable:
In High Point NC,
2000 Toyota Tundra SR5 "Toyota Certified Used Car"
Access Cab
$15,990 (un-negotiated price)
57500 miles
4x2
4.7 V8
Automatic
pwr windows, doorlocks, mirrors
am/fm/cd/cassette
sliding rear window
alloy wheels
tires will probably last another year
body in good shape except this, which concerns me: on the front bumper, there is a hole which looks like a mouth on the front of the truck, and in the center is where the front tag would go.
PS, if you want to look at the truck, it's listed on cars.com, and here is the URL:
2000 Toyota Tundra
Thanks
Any/all advice is greatly appreciated.
Good Luck.

Even more so - premium marque dealers don't want milers on their lot unless they look really nice and they can make some good money on them. I know my local Honda emporium (not quite the same) usually has a couple of extra nice 7-10 YO Accords on the lot but these are beauties.

Good Luck.
2000 GMC Yukon
5.3L engine, 2WD, electronic traction control, CD, Cassette, Running boards, rear air AND rear heat.
Bright red w/ silver bottom (beautiful color, and not many of them around).
96K miles. Absolutely perfect condition (well okay, maybe 98-99% condition
All maint records, all oil change records, Michelin Cross Terrains with 70% of tread left, good brakes.
I owe nothing on it; and I'm paying cash for my next vehicle - so I'm probably looking at either selling it to Carmax or Retail Road. What's the verdict; friends?
If it still looks as good as it does now and you still have all the maintenance records available and is mechanically good running condition in 4x4, the best time to put it in the paper is over a two week period during the first big snowstorm next winter. Advertise it as the first $2,000 drives this 4x4 home in the snow, it will sell for a few hundred dollars more money during the winter versus spring time.
Then you will have ~$2,000 for a cash down payment ready to roll on your next car.
2 wd V-6 , auto, full power, sunroof
New brakes and service...THIN tires
82k miles
No sale green, Tan cloth guts..........

Man, I just got to tell you.
We've all been hanging out, having a good time, swapping anecdotes, and soaking up your advice.
Then, lately, some of your messages started mentioning the "GF", and then, apparently, you've gotten a life.
DON'T DO IT!
