Why not try a 4 cylinder SUV. The CRV's engine competes very well with the smaller V6's offered by some of it's competition and the Forrester XT would obliterate pretty much everything in the small SUV class.

OK, OK, I'll expand on the maintenance thing. I have performed all scheduled maintenance, and have changed the oil six times. It has not required any unplanned maintenance. I'll also admit that I'm not running on the original tank of gas, either.

Also, I'm still on the hunt, although the Orange Exploder is doing okay right now. I want something with better gas mileage, I've been getting 18 on the interstate. I did something I never thought I'd do tonight, I got behind the wheel of a brand new Hyundai Santa Fe. It was okay, but like the salesman said, I'm one of those who won't buy one because of ego.

Done deal, my son got $7,900 for the 01 Civic on trade for a new 05 Mazda3 hatchback 5spd, at $300 over invoice. (BTW, this is a nice little car!) When I posted asking for your advice, I didn't know the power locks on the Civic didn't work, and there was a 6 inch long crease in the front fender next to the right headlight. I think we "done good" !! And, yes, AZ is a tax on difference state.
I suppose there isn't much chance that the 3 will retain the value that the Civic did. Honda's do get crazy money....

Recently bought a new car for my wife and am looking for private party numbers for her old car.

New brakes about 20K miles (a few years) ago.
New hoses under hood 20K/few years ago.
The interior is in pretty good condition. It's clean and everything works, no fry invasions.
The exterior is a different story...it's a bit beat up. There is a credit-card sized dent on the front passenger fender and the paint there is cracked. Front bumper looks like it had a few Wal-Mart kisses. The paint is glossy everywhere but there has been a lot of touched up spots (maybe 20, size of dimes).
A number for private party would be great.

You got an over $1000 trade in offer on a domestic anything with 159K on it and it looks a bit beat up? Take it and run.
It is not even like it gets 30+mpg which around here if it runs and gets that kind of mileage is moving fast. Gas just hit $2.49 gal for regular unleaded yesterday.
If you had those little cosmetic issues repaired, seat tear, etc, you could take the time and ask $2,200 and hope for an offer of $1500-1700 cash private party sale. But you better have a recent full mechanical inspection and all the maintenance records on the seat if you want to be able to sell it at all for any decent money. Drift is right on.
BTW you owe money on that vehicle with 159K? how much?
Now, Terry, I fell in love today, at least somewhat. Here is what I found, tell me if it's reasonable:

body in good shape except this, which concerns me: on the front bumper, there is a hole which looks like a mouth on the front of the truck, and in the center is where the front tag would go. On either side of where the tag would go, inside the holes is surface rust, and lots of it. The interior of the truck appears clean, but it needs a good steam cleaning and detailing. I flipped up the back seat, and under it near the hinge appears to be either a) red clay mud or b) RUST residue.
The carfax on this thing came out clean, but do you think it's possible that this is a flood vehicle? Something just doesn't sit right with me about the interior. On the carfax it says it's been in NC all it's life, who knows. What do you think Terry, and all you other guys? I love the truck, but the rust outside and the interiour on a '00 with 57k miles worries me. I await your almighty opinion.

2000 Toyota Tundra
I bought the Jimmy 25 months ago on a 4 year loan and it had 114,000 miles on it. It got my payments down to $148 a month which at the time is what I needed becauase I was in school. But now I still owe $3170 on it and can only HOPE to get $1500 out of it. Anyway it was what I had to do at the time but now I got to pay for my problem I had back then.
I can't sell it privately because I don't currently have enough cash to pay the difference when I sell it to someone, unless I could find someone to actuall give me like $2500 for it or something.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.... I might just keep it for a while and try to pay it all as soon as I can and then sell it locally... unless I get some good suggestions from someone.

I will be in the market in the next 6 months to a year to pay cash for a used Toyota Land Cruiser ('98 to '00 model) or a BMW X5 ('00 or '01 model). Miles don't scare me, as long as the vehicle has been very well maintained. I'd like to stay in the 18K to 22K price range, and have a couple of questions.
1. You guys say that normally, a vehicle with over 75K doesn't retail - the dealer wholesales it, because no one will finance it, warranty it, etc. Does that hold true for high mile premium vehicles also?
2. Where to buy? Private party, Carmax, or regular dealer? Seems like the "valuemax" arm of Carmax has vehicles with over 60K miles - and often times they have Land Cruisers and BMW's for sale with higher miles.
3. Your personal opinion - Land Cruiser or BMW X5? Any reliability concerns I should be aware of?
4. Should I be able to negotiate a better deal since I can pay cash on the spot, or does that really matter?
Any/all advice is greatly appreciated.
If you can afford to pay a few bucks extra on the $148 every month - DO IT!! Pay this vehicle off as quickly as you can. Someone, somewhere will allow you to roll over your negative equity into a new loan but I wouldn't do it - it's the start of a bad trend.
Just live with the decision you made and get through it.

Even more so - premium marque dealers don't want milers on their lot unless they look really nice and they can make some good money on them. I know my local Honda emporium (not quite the same) usually has a couple of extra nice 7-10 YO Accords on the lot but these are beauties.

Private Party - Terry always says that Cash In Fist seems to work wonders!!
Dealer - cash sales don't earn fees for them on financing. You might get a better selling price if you finance and then you could always pay it off in a couple-three months.

If it still looks as good as it does now and you still have all the maintenance records available and is mechanically good running condition in 4x4, the best time to put it in the paper is over a two week period during the first big snowstorm next winter. Advertise it as the first $2,000 drives this 4x4 home in the snow, it will sell for a few hundred dollars more money during the winter versus spring time.
Then you will have ~$2,000 for a cash down payment ready to roll on your next car.

Oh yeah and I need a trade value on this.........its not mine I swear, have a debate going on with a co-worker who is trying to tell me its worth more than mine because hers only has 2k miles on it vs the 7k on mine. She's looking to trade it, I told her she's gonna need some heavy equipment and a lotta $$$ to get out of this beast.
2004 Titan XE king cab 4x4, Canteen green/grey guts, no options (no big tow, off road, no nothing), all it has is the base XE options (not sure what they are, but it doesn't have power anything). She has a hole in the front bumper by the tow hooks (about the size of a baseball) and a scratch on the driver's side door (about 3-4 inches long). Has all of 2k miles on it. Oh and she owes $32k on it (I owe real close to that on my LE).
I'm thinking $18-19k in trade MAYBE, she's thinking its worth $25k or so on trade, so what say the master??

As far as reliabilty: Land Cruiser ... as far as resale: Land Cruiser ... as far as the cost of maintence over the long haul: Land Cruiser ... trying to unload a high mileage Bimmer is like trying to unload a fat girl, a few lookers and even fewer takers, plus the "books" give a false value at trade or sale time on high mileage Bimmers, and you can end up at the garden department at Home Depot if your not careful .... most folks have little or no fear of a high mileage Land Cruiser, and they do some serious money with 60k or 160k ...
Lets be honest here, what sells a "high mileage" Bimmer is not the reliabilty factor or those cheap oil changes, it's those three little letters - BMW .. and folks in the know, and buyers that know the market understand what that can stand for: Big Major Wegie .........................................
PS: where to buy one ..? .. watch the papers and try the private sellers first, keep an eye on ebay -but not- any farther than you can drive comfortably and still keep control of the feely touchy thing .....
