The downside to the Kia is poor resale value, but if you get a new van loaded for $20k with a 10yr/100k powertrain and 5yr/60k bumper to bumper warranty you can just drive the value out of it.
Wait until the much improved 2006 models come out for stability control, etc - or score a left over 2005 for REALLY cheap.
Toyotas are nice and seldom break, but when they do they have some REALLY spendy parts. We used to have a Previa and had to trade it once the miles racked up and things finally started to fail.

If you like em' and enjoy em', then no biggie .... but just like in your case, you took a $2,5/$3,0 hit at trade time .. and a lighter color will do $3,0/$4,000 more on a phone call on the retail side .... south of the Mason/Dixon line it becomes a color thing and they're hard to sell ...

Just wanted to update you on the car. Got it back last wed and the total damage was just under $5200. The Lexus dealer looked it over before it I got it back and the brakes went out on it and they almost hit the wall...The service manager said it had nothing to do with the accident and they replaced the master cylinder under warranty. (Would appreciate your comments or thoughts on this failure)
As far as the diminsished value claim....I have talked to a few appraisers and the insurance company and have decided to turn it over to a lawyer. The insurance is playing games and transferred the diminished value claim to an office in another state. They were very vague and could not answer my questions on the phone.
As far as the body work...it came out pretty good ...the Lexus used car manager asked who did the body work. I'll let you know the outcome once the ins co pays up. :sick:

These things have to be cleaner than the "Board of Health" - and Twice as sanitary to get some real money .... service has to be 110%, deep sneakers, no paint by numbers, no Swiss Army knife interior, no curb burners and no Swirlomatic car washes ..... if so, then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $35's, low low low $36ish range, "might "maybe" get a dealer to fall on his sword at the mid $36 figure if it's day-glo, needs -0- and his bookie is 5 minutes away ...... .... down Retail Rd, finish any service, a visit with the Dukes of Detail, big fat 5/6 liner Ad in the Boston Globe and $39,950 *asking* and take the the first "real deal" $38,9/$39,5 .......... tax difference advantage in Mass, right.?

Not far from Richmond .... we have a 03 VW Passat GLS, 1.8t, we have 22,000 low miles , auto (thank gawd.!), good color for the area, we have the moron stereo and bun warmers for the hydes ........ no curb burners, no slash and run interior, no I ran over my Aunt's dog house, no battle's at Wal-Mart and deep round things.? ... if so ~ then trade side, in and around the super tall $13's low/mid $14's - if it needs stuff, start deducting ......... $17,900 on the pay-off..? so your "about" $4 grand "out of round" with the taxes ..... 3rd kid on the way.? have you guys thought about different bedrooms.?

We have an 04 TL with 17k .... it's a meat cleaver (noooo help) .. no Nav (almost meaningless) .. new rubber (always helps) and the color is good for the area .... if it's clean one, no salt, no snow plow attacks, no $2.00 car washes and no soccer Mom interior .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $26ish range, might "maybe" get a dealer to waddle towards the $27,0 figure .. if it needs stuff, start deducting ..... the miles and the handshaker will hold it back ....
Retail Rd ..? .. that's a tuff market to stagger around in .. what can you ask for it.? .. $29,950 and hope you see $28,5/$29,0 ..... what's your pay-off ..? ...........

My friend who was looking at the 2001 Toyota Sienna for $18,900, where the dealer was willing to go to $18,600 -- well she offered $17,500 and the dealer took it so she's happy driving the car she wanted at a price she was willing to pay.

Well ...... this one has tiny miles, it's an LE auto, we have the slider and maybe the wheels ..... if the dealer took it on trade and it's really nice, then he probably paid the strong $11's, "maybe" even the low low low low low low low low low low low low $12's for it, Big maybe ........ 6k, slider and let's say it's puuuurfect, maybe $13/$13,5ish, can't say ... hard to get and hard to find, he'll sell it with or without your friend ... with gas going up, most of these little dudes get more $$ .. I'm paying more money now for Prizm's than I was a year ago, go figure ...........................................

but here's a question in all seriousness, and with due respect
........ did Oprah offer you a Kia or a Ferrari?
And here's an illustration of how hard it is for us non-car people who buy a car every 5 to 8 years just to get around in to know what we're doing even if we do our "homework" and our "research." Edmunds TMV valued this Sienna at ~$19,300, KBB had it at $18,240 and another site (I can't remember which) valued it at $20,685. Everyone on this board, whose judgement I trust a lot valued it at way less.
So here's what would have happened if she had done her "homework" on the 3 sites I just mentioned that put values on used cars. I know that they are just a starting point, but nevertheless she would have been happy, and I think most non-car people would have felt they had done the right thing if they had gotten a price in the middle of the high and the low figures these sites offer. The mid price between $18,240 and $20,685 is $19,463 if I did my arithmathic right. But because you guys on "Real World..." valued this Sienna closer to $15-16K (if I remember. I don't want to scroll back and risk posting twice), she offered $17,500, an amount between your numbers and the "bargained to" price of $18,600. So you are laughing, and I'm not saying you are wrong from where you sit, but from where we novices peer out over the scary car buying world, she saved $900 on the basis of your advice. and the "average novice" car buyer, in my opinion, would have saved $2,343 (if you split the difference of $4,685 between your $16,000 and the top "car site" value of $20,685).
So even though you're laughing at us, we don't take offense.....

That is a great thing.. She may still have paid too much, but she is still $1100 better off by you doing a little research...
At least she paid too much for a Toyota... there are a lot worse things that she could have overpaid for...

Seems like the price of a lot of things are going up. We had our 2003 Wrem 18' Car/Bobcat trailer appraised recently and the guy hit it at an easy $3500 even with the damaged diamond plated wheel well (long story there). He said the price of steel is going up and to replace our trailer today would cost $5195 new, he said he could sell our trailer in a day. We bought ours brand new in October 2003 for $4195. So if its only lost $695 in 2 years I ain't complaining. I only wish cars were that way!
I think online folks tend to be a little more "cheap" than the rest of the world - we want new cars sold to at prices into the hold back and used cars near the auction prices
The rest of the world has a different, higher price.
The Sienna is a very nice van, but I (personally) would not want to pay so much for a high mile out of warranty example. So that would make my price for this a lot lower than what some "online book" price would show. Of course, they have a lot of errors and problems in the "book" values - where what you get here are more "Real-world" (hey, they should put that in the forum title) and that tends to be lower.
Hopefully your friend will have many, happy and trouble free miles in the new-to-them van!

I'm looking for a used Dodge Dakota reg. cab with 4WD here in Florida. Dodge doesn't make the reg. cab anymore (as of 2005) and who needs 4WD in Florida so I should be able to pick one up for next to nothing. And maybe less if I can find a black one.
Terry priced one out for me a week or so ago for about 40% off the price of a new one, and that's for a low mileage 2 yr old truck still with lots of warranty left. Edmunds private party price was about $1300 higher than the dealer asking price on autotrader.com, which I think was already discounted though.
Funny helping him remotely. He was so burnt out from the ordeal, he just wanted to buy something to get it done. The hassle of hitting multiple dealers, not finding something they liked, or finally finding a possibility and having it priced through the roof.
I had the same problem trying to find a stick shift in the past. It is a reason that some people just buy new. Might be more espensive, but it is easier and less painful (also much easier to feel confident that you paid a fair market price).

I did find the Edmunds Trade-in value.
The issue is that the dealer will only allow wholesale value of $3800 on a trade, vs the Edmunds trade in value ranging from $5380 (clean) - $6016 (outstanding).

Probably. It's a 6 YO, 120K used Subaru. They are going to send it to the auction and can only expect to get the wholesale out of it. They aren't going to put it on the lot and try to retail it.

$6000 is retail numbers at the corner lot for that baby.
Yes, wholesale or a couple of hundred back of wholesale is likely the best you can do. Why not find you a corner lot that specializes in import and import performance cars and get a cash buy quote from them? You will probably find that the $3,800 is right on the money or a little better than most cash offers.
You have some marginal paint for the year, cracked windshield, worn rubber, not even 4WD, and lets not forget about the 120K big ones.
~$11,000 is retail (asking?) numbers with everything repaired.
Given its condition, poor, any dealer looking at it on trade is going to guess that the maintenance has not been up to par and it has had a hard life, which it sounds like it has.
I'm thinking trade side is going to be on the back side of $8,000.
We just picked up an 2002 4WD Chevy Trailblazer, with 129K for under $9,000, and it didn't need tires or windshield. It was nice, needing nothing except super detail (except the prior owner smoked in it) and fluid changes.
