.. because you're good friends with the orginal owner, you know the deal and have all the history ...

Actually, I've owned the car since new, i.e. I've been the only owner.
Thanks a lot for the good advice, Terry. I appreciate it. I will likely sell it privately, then.

    Terry,
I hope you're in watching golf this afternoon. I have a live one:
    St. Louis, MO
    2002 Honda S2000
    2 door convertible
    2.0L 4 cylinder, 6-speed manual
    RWD
    22,xxx miles
    Silver with black cows
    Spoiler
Looks real nice, body is straight, new tires
Check engine light is lit - the say they will take care of it but it makes me nervous
    Asking $22,950
They are offering stupid money on my trade:
    1994 Nissan 300ZX
    2-door convertible
    3.0L V-6
    RWD
    124,xxx miles
    Dark green over tan cows
All original, one owner, fully maintained, just back from Mr. Dent and Mr. Leather, A/C is arctic, tires are deep, brakes are thick, clutch is new. It's ready for sale.
The only difference being the difference, we are at $14,275. Should I be here on the computer, or over there making this happen?
    Thanks!
    ====================================

Difference figure..? now were talkin' ... kinda like Retief Goosen, there's a big difference between putting - and making the putts ....

The Z car is worth in and around the mid/tall $5's, maybe the short $6's, maybe .. and were sitting on a $14,275 "differenza" .....

So lets say the dealer go's wacky and drops an even $6,0 in it .... hmm lets see , carry the 2, minus the five, divide by 4, plus 3, add the 12, carry back the 7, shave the 6 (taking shoes off and counting toes) and subtract 8 .... uh, hmm, ahhh, lets see .. uhm, da, hmm, that would come to maybe, aah, well, round off the 4 ... I'm thinkin' that would be like, almost, maybe kinda like $20,275 - plus the tax, the wax and the roof racks .....

(CPO.?) ..... If if if if .... the rubber is deep, the history is strong, the service is 15 minutes old, no repaints, no 350lb owners, just a real nice S2000 ... then the dealer probably has the strong $20ish figure in it -- I must be missing something .. and my Abacus is broke ..

Yep, I have all the "back books" thanks. I think I'm okay with it. I have a bit of a bias against Korean cars and so I need to seek outside guidance. You don't seemed thrilled with them either - LOL!

You know how it is...people lose a car they're making payments on, and they want the insurance company to pay off the loan, not merely the FMV. Most end up upside down, and arbitration can't correct that in most cases.

    Hi Terry,

Can you give me some advice? Have a minivan and wanting 2005 Toyo Highlander. I have gotten about one or two quotes and they have left us with about $2500 negative equity. We have been told, just not a good market for the vans is reason for low quotes.

    Black 2002 Olds Silhouette
    FWD GL Trim
    Greensboro, NC
    approx 44,900 miles
    new tires
quad seating, AM/FM/Cass/single CD, alloy wheels, rear air, parking sensors, driver info center, OnStar,
Interior clean and in good shape with cloth seats
    All maint is update

I think this is everything you will need to respond, if not, let me know

    kyfdx,
original sticker was $25.2K but that was probably invoice. Now, why are we selling it?? My lucky daughter won the car in a local promo! But, she wants to sell it and get something more practical.
I am toying with the idea of buying it from her and driving it (too bad it isn't the S model, a stick and a hardtop).
Maybe I can make a decent trade at the MINI dealer that it came from.......

Terry, please let me know trade in for the following:

    2000 Pathfinder LE
    Indianapolis area
White Pearl exterior - Tan Leather interior
sunroof, heated seats, cd, full power,
Nissan chrome wheels ($1000 option new)
    3.2 liter, auto, 4wd
very good exterior, minor scratches (4) on rear bumper, no other dings or scratches,
front bumper, and one fender replaced due to deer collision in November, I can't tell the difference, but I suppose you could, very good repair job. Interior is very good, no spots, mats covered since new, service up to date, new plugs, belts replaced, trans serviced etc at 60K, tires replaced 20K ago, original brakes, 62,000 miles.

I'm thinking of trading it on a 2004 New Pathfinder, adv. at 29K, orig sticker close to 35K, LE Platinum Edition. What should I expect? I know SUV's are weak now, should I try to sell it myself?

    Thanks for your advice.

Sorry forgot to post that we have been offered $10,000 & $11,500 for the '02 Silhouette. Are either of these close to a good price for this vehicle, if we are looking to trade on an '05 Toyota Highlander?

Hi Terry, my name is Chris and I was directed to you by another forum member to recruit a little help. I am looking to purchase the following:

    BMW 2003 540i automatic
    Sterling Gray Metallic
    Black Leather Interior
    19,703 miles
    Optional Equip:
    Sport Package
    Comfort seats
    Split Rear Folding Seats
    Clean condition

More than likely i will purchase this vehicle from a BMW Dealer as a CPO car. My research on Edmunds and Kelly Blue Book has showed for this car outfitted with the above options comes in at Dealer Retail Price of $43,000. Private party comes in around $39,000. My understanding is the Dealer has a lot of room for profit on this vehicle. Of course they run the car through a 125 point inspection an attach an additional 3 year, 50,000 mile warranty on it, cost for insurance, advertising and dealer profit. So I can understand where the difference of $4,000 from Private Party price vs. Dealer Retail comes from. What I can't understand is when they then add another $4,000 above the $43,000 for a $47,000 asking price.

I guess with all this info. my question is, what is a fair price for the above vehicle if I am to purchase this from a dealer?

One of the dealer's emailed me back and said some cars come in needing more re conditioning like new tires and brakes etc so there costs are higher. Bunch of b.s. I am sure.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hey Terry,

I am really thinking about trading in my recently repaired Avalon. Here are the particulars

    2004 Toyota Avalon XL
    6600 miles
    black outside, tan inside
it has the usual XL stuff plus dual power seats, alloy wheels, and keyless entry. Sticker was right around $28,000.
the hail damage was pretty bad. The total bill ended up being @ $7000. Some of the repairs were with PDR, but the hood, decklid, and most of the rightside was fixed conventionally (and thus dismantled, fixed, and repainted).
The repair looks good -- it was done by a bodyshop my family has used for years but it is still a repaired vehicle.
tires, brakes, etc. all fine, and all maintenance has been done by the dealer. Interior is clean.

I live in beautiful Joliet, IL, 50 some miles southwest of Chicago.

    Thanks!

could you please give me a trade-in value for :

    2002 Mazda Tribute LX - 2WD, Gray/Gray, V6
    Milage: 61,000
    Ocala, FL

Exterior: Overall very good, 1 small dent in front left quarter panel, handful of small scratches, mostly on rear bumper. Some pitting on lower (plastic) under doors from tar, etc. Quite a bit of tar in front right wheelwell. No wrecks or bodywork done.

Interior: Also good, with exception of center console top - this would probably need to be fixed/replaced. There a few small punctures and one about the size of a pencil eraser with a bit of stuffing peeking out.

Tires: Original. Need to be replaced. (These were great tires, can't see top of Lincoln's head yet.)
    Brakes: Still on original pads.
Maintenance: basically good, oil changed every 3-5, tires rotated every other change, had a "30K" checkup at 36, so due at 66. Has had all recommended recall work.

I too have found a great discrepancy in the trade in value between Edmunds, Kelley, etc. so I am a little confused and would appreciate some enlightenment.

    Thanks, Carol

    Terry,

We're joining the minivan crowd. So one of our two vehicles has to get swapped out. The Mrs. is no help figuring out which car to keep, so I thought your input might be a better choice then her "coin flip" recommendation:

    1) 2002 Ford Escape V6 XLT 4WD - Green
Leather, moonroof, 6-CD, side airbags, running boards
    35K miles
Exterior has some minor scratches here and there...
Interior could use some cleaning, but no damage.
Front two tires were replaced ~1yr ago due to some alignment wear.

    2) 2004 Mazda3s Hatchback - Gray
    Leather, 6-CD, side airbags, Automatic
    6K Miles
Exterior and Interior are pretty much as new

    Location: San Francisco area

I can make an argument for either if I try... looks like a 2K to 3K spread between their trade-in values to me so far.

Any pricing input you have would be helpful.

    Thanks!

.. **I have a bit of a bias against Korean cars and so I need to seek outside guidance. You don't seemed thrilled with them either - LOL!** ..

I really don't have a bias on any vehicle and it's not a personal thing, any bias I might have is with the "propaganda" on these things ....

There is a huge amount of buy-backs on these dudes and a TON of "Arb" cases that go on daily, but lets put that all aside for a moment - it's a reliabilty and a longevity issue ..

I see hundred and thousands of Contours, Subu's, Bimmers, Mazda's, Dodge's, Buicks, Honda's "whatever" and these dudes have 120/150/180k ... some folks prefer a Bimmer and some folks prefer a Buick .. some are 5 years old, some are 10 years old, some live in Boston and some live in Dallas ... but what you don't see, is a Bimmer dealer in Dallas buying back 10% of his sales in a year, you don't see the Buick dealer in Boston buying back 40/50 vehicles when he only sold 600 cars, they don't have to, they have a proven track record ... in the meantime, it's like Lemmings to the Sea with the Korean vehicles ..... ain't my $$, so I really don't care .............. :shades:

Thanks Terry. My payoff is $20k. Dealer offered $18,500 and a Suburu B9 @ $499 over invoice. I will probably sit tight for now. I have never turned over a car so quickly and not interested in taking a "bath".
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ $18,5 is pretty strong money my friend, so obviously the dealer is digging deep to try to get your business ....

You owe $20.? .. not to sound smart, but thats "chump change" based on the whole picture .. most folks owe $25 grand on $18,5 vehicles (no matter what the nameplate says) ... if I were you, I would be lookin' for a trigger to push -- the 06's are about 2 weeks away - and I've never seen a Explorer "appreciate" ...

    Good luck ................................... ;)

No I never let my biases affect my dealings, but I do wonder sometimes if folks are looking at the Big Picture when they buy a car....maybe not, huh? :confuse:

Well enuf of that....looks like you are busy around here Terry!
  • scantyscanty Member Posts: 164
It's still on the table, but the legs are being taken out. Yes Shifty, they were showing $8700 for the Z on paper. As Terry often says "over allowance."

Here's where is starts getting hinkey. I got the Carsmack, and it's...interesting. We've got a positive on accident history, three owners - in Missouri, and in Dealer inventory in Florida on 1/14/2005. Maybe Terry has actually seen this one. VIN is JHMAP11472T001878.

In the meantime, when I was at another dealer looking at a different S2K, someone looked at my car an inquired about purchasing it. Retail road money would be nice. Might get me into another car I looked at a few weeks ago that is still out there:

    2004 Honda S2000
    2-door convertible
    2.2 liter I-4
    RWD
Dealer Demo - never titled - 3700 miles
    Silverstone over black cows
New - a little "lived in" but just needs to be cleaned up

What's a realistic number for this one?

    Hi Terrry -
Can you provide trade & pvt party numbers for a 2003 Protege5?
    Minneapolis, MN
    White / Black Leather
    Autostick
    Moonroof
    6CD
    AutoDim/Compass Mirror
    Tinted Windows
    AutoStart (2way)
    15,xxx miles
    Excellent condition in & out
    All service done at Mazda

Thinking of moving up to a TL/G/3.

    Thanks!

At least in my area, metro-Boston, bmw dealers often ask crazy prices for used bmw's. And they must get those prices (?), because often it's almost impossible to negotiate. Try bmw dealers more in the hinterlands, perhaps. The CPO warranty is real nice, but I don't know if I'd pay more than $2k-$3K extra for it. It's 2 (additional) years btw, unless they've changed it.

The luster of a two door car is starting to wear off for me and I was wondering what my Solara might be worth (on trade in) before I even consider getting on the street and trying to trade it in. The specifics are:

Vehicle: 2001 Toyota Solara SE (purchased Sept 2000)

Condition: Ext: Paint glossy, some chips on hood. a few dings from doors of other cars, one dent in passenger side rear quarter panel, scuff the size of a quarter on rear bumper.

Terry already answered this, but: trading/selling a used car for less than you owe is not necessarily "taking a bath". What you "owe" is not that relevant to what the vehicle is worth now. Getting a strong trade/in price for an Exploder, & a good deal on a brand new Subaru--what more do you want?
  • scantyscanty Member Posts: 164
has another one, also a 2002, but with the red interior and aftermarket 18" wheels and tires. Been there for a couple of months. I guess I should ask if their trade-in number is good for either one, or just the smacked one.

More info on the demo in your inbox.

Terry, Looking to buy and seek your opinion on these 2 cars. Back in August 2004 Consumer Reports called the 2004 LS V8 sport the best new car deal with an MSRP of $40,605 and a target purchase price of $30,469. I'm in Northern NJ and dealers still have brand new '04s on the lots. There are numerous packages available and MSRP's range from $41,795-$45,195. My question is what are these cars worth? The brand new 2005's are almost a year old, so these are 2 year old brand new cars. Am I better off looking for a low mileage '04 10/12K miles. What are those going for?

As for the 2005 Cadillac CTS under GM's employee discount plan the base CTS with leather & 3.6 L engine & 5 spd auto is selling for $30,787.00. What is this going to do to prices for low mileage 2004's. What are they going for now at 10/12k miles? Or is this price pressure going to take a while to trickle down?

What's the best value in your opinion and which is the better car? I assume the Cadillac is going to hold its value better since ther'e no word on whether Lincoln is going to continue to make the LS. Thanks in advance.

    ==================================

Good Mornin' Cris ........ thanks for the 52 pages of info, but you forgot to tell me where this dude is --- ahh, NC ...

For starters, the old body styles are in bigger demand than the new ones, new 545's can be bought for a song (what was Bangle thinkin.?) .... was this a trade, or did he buy it at the auction .?

This one is looooow in the miles department, auto, good color for the area and we got the sport pack ........ IF this one is clean, no paint by numbers, deep in rubber, the service is 110% and no visits to Maaco .. then the dealer probably paid the mid/high $36's, maybe the low low low $37's .. so figure the CPO - $1,500, a little this and a little that - $500, so it probably hits the table at around the $39ish figure ......

$47,0 is a nice *asking* price, but the tall $41ish low $42ish figure would be just about all of it - and $43,000 would be all the money on the planet if ya just can't live without it .... it's got super low low low miles and it has the CPO and you can't get em' - can't find em' ....... that said, it's only a Bimmer, not a Baume Mercier ...

Let me know what happens ......

I have to part with my 2002 because I have 2 SUVS and gas prices are killing me. I have a 2002 s 4wd aut with TOD ,green in great shape with 86500 miles on it.I had a dealer tell me he would give me $7500 in trade on a mazda 6. I have looked up the value in both KBB and NADA .KBB says private value to be around $8500-9500 and NADA says 13,500 !! Any ideas on a fair price if I try to sell it on my own?? The truck is in great shape no problems and I hate to get rid of it !! I am located in Maryland .Thanks!!!

    Dear Terry:

I am writing you because I want to trade in my current vehicle for a 2005 GTO that the dealer wants to sell me for $30813.00 which he said is his price on it. My payoff amount is $12,500.00, he offered me $10,000.00 for my Focus sight unseen and said the offer can only go down not up when I do bring it in to him. He suggested that I sell my vehicle privately if I want more money for it. I really need to know what my car should be worth so that I can bargain with that, and does anyone know what a GTO 6-speed 2005 should be going for in NJ, NY, Pa area, or what dealership is the fairest in pricing on these cars.

    Thank you all

Hi Terry. We're thinking about trading my wife's Alero in on a minivan in the near future (kid number two due in August). What's the trade-in on this sucker?

    2000 Olds Alero GL Sedan
    Detroit, MI
    3.4L V6
    Auto
    50,000 miles
    No-sale blue
    Cloth, CD, power locks/windows
    Average condition - no accidents
    Tires about 1.5 years old
    All regular maintenance done

    Thanks!

For a friend, he wants to move up from this. He has heard from 7K- 8.5K ish from an Infiniti and a Caddy dealer. What say the Oracle?

2001 Acura CL Type S, San Marino Red
    86,000 miles
Body/Interior in good condition. Some body scratches on the bumpers but paint is in good condition. Everything is intact and works.

About a year ago I hit a deer and they replaced the whole front bumper and headlight, but there was no other body damage. But they did not have to replace any of the metal. They repainted the whole front end just to blend the colors but there were no marks on the hood or fenders.

I would classify condition overall as very good but not excellent. Car has had all scheduled service (with Acura) and never any major mechanical work. Needs a set of tires though.

Does anyone have any recommendations on the best way to sell a 1999 Ford Econoline 250 Cargo Van with rack and bin system. 85,000 miles. I know they are a dime a dozen, and it is difficult to determine price and it's not exactly in high demand. Suggestions please!

Since these vans mainly appeal to contractors & tradespeople, maybe make a small flyer & post in the local Sherwin Williams, builders supply house, etc.. The miles are decent for the year. I see these in the local paper often, and even newer ones seem to have 150-200K. I would actually think this type of van would be worth more to the right person, since it's already outfitted for their needs, and therefore in a little higher demand. But, I've never bought or sold one so that's just an outsiders take on it. Also, in my area, there is a publication that cost $1.50 called Truck Trader. It's all trucks & vans, anything from a Toyota Tacoma to a tandem axle dump truck. Since buyers of this are looking for your type of vehicle, you might consider listing there too. www.trucktraderonline.com is the website.

I do agree that taking this to the local dealer as a trade is not going to be very appealing to them.. it's a niche vehicle and they generally try to hit more of the general public in my experience.

I don't know the prices, but it sure does have a lot of miles for an '03. Maybe if it had 10-15K miles it would be worth $31K(?). Miles matter a lot on expensive Euro-cars.....you might also post your question on the E39 board at Roadfly.org.

    Hi Terry (and the gang),

Remember that '97 Outback wagon I got with 34k on it a while back? The garage mate is for sale:

1984 Volvo 240 GL 4 door sedan. No kisses. Leather, sunroof and automatic. Also has an AM/FM radio and tape deck (lol, no, not the 8-track variety). Comes with 4 mounted snow tires and a new battery. Light brown.

    58,000 original one owner miles.

She has a buyer (plus a waiting list) - just wants to get the fair price for it. Thanks!

Well, we just had our first child and I am considering selling off this lovely 1995 MB C220.
It is terrible in snow and out of warranty. Maintenance wise it has only cost a couple oil changes and yesterday some service work, not too bad really. It is white, has 43,400 original miles (this was a second/summer car). Body is pristine. interior could be detailed. 4 cyl. A/C works fine, brakes are fine, has leather seats, power sunroof, power windows, airbags, abs and 4 new tires. this is really a solid, beautiful little car, but maintenance on it could get costly down the road. I want to get my wife into a FWD car w/warranty.

You need to specify where the car is located to get any kind of proper market value.

And a C with good winter tires should be fine in snow....but that's beside the point....

It's another Anchorage car, but knowing Lancer, he'd hitch a ride to Elmendorf and drive it back. :)

it is located in Lexington, KY. I can handle the car in the snow/ice, but the wife can't all
    that well.

Winter tires would make all the difference...

But, anyway.. you shouldn't have any trouble selling that car in Lexington.. More Yuppies-in-training per square mile than any other place.. Someone will buy that car for Muffy for her first car....

I'll be interested to hear what kind of price that Terry puts on it..

He's not going to put any value on it unless it is presented in the right format for him (see suggested format at bottom of this page).

Maybe I'll take this one since my specialty is older stuff, if his carship Terry wouldn't mind me butting in on him. He seems busy as it is, poor guy!

Well given your location and all, and presuming the car is tip-top, I would think $2,500 would be all the money in the world for it.

With cars like this, basically you lump them all together and say "look, how much is ANY good looking good running old car worth, bottom line?" I would presume that in Alaska cars take a beating, so finding anything decent that runs and doesn't look like it's been the victim of a terrorist attack is worth $2,000 on up....below that you get cars with needs. Where I live it's a $1,500 car but I'm giving you a premium for miles and location.

    There's part of your answer:

    *58,000 original one owner miles.
She has a buyer (plus a waiting list)*

I think (?) these are practically collector cars now, esp. with that mileage. Someone here said $2500. I don't really know the prices, but at $2500 I'd bet it would be gone in 5 seconds. Just a wild guess--even at $3500; it wouldn't last long. And I wouldn't be afraid to "start" higher--the snows, the leather, the "classic" Volvo thing.......this is assuming it is a creampuff.

The automatic would put me off of it...

If I'm going to be going that slow, I at least want to row my own gears...

I bet she does have a line waiting for it, though.. popular cars.. I think for an '84, $2500 would be about it.. Might stagger up to $3500-$4500 if it were an '89-'93..

    regards,
