1998 Nissan Maxima SE, black,3.0 liter V6, 5spd manual, moonroof, bose stereo, cloth seats, 113,000 miles, A/C has a leak, tires are in good shape, around 10000 miles on them. Paint is glossy but has many small scratches, ding, but no other problems. Dealer offered $2000.
1992 Acura Integra GS-R, green, 1.7 liter VTEC I4, 5spd manual, moonroof, cloth seats, two small rust spots (rear wheel arch, roof in front of moonroof) 97000 miles, glossy paint otherwise.. Everything else works great. Tires are in great shape, <5000miles on them. Dealer offered $1000.
Based on trade in values from Edmunds TMV and Kelly's Blue book, I was expecting closer to $3500 and $1600 respectively. Am I too optimistic here?
98 Maxima blowing hot air, minor scratches, tons of miles and a 92 Acura that has started turning itself to rust. Both would very likely be going straight to auction and the dealer needs to be back of book to break even on a deal like that.
Given that both a manual transmissions, both are rough with significant issues, trade side sounds about right.
Depending on where you live, you could get stupid money selling the Acura out yourself to some kid. The Maxima with a manual is going to be a tough one to move even if the A/C were fixed.
"To increase its value, should I replace the tires before trading it in?"
Thanks.

=====================================
Austin city limits, right.? .. I love that show .....
We have this Yota Sienna XLE with 77k .... the color is ok for the area, the miles are nice and low for the year, we got the hydes, some tunes, it's been living shelter side, we got some boards and a rack - you say it's been serviced and everything else is kinda okay ...... if so, then trade side, it's worth in and around the super tall $6's low low $7's, might maybe "could" get a dealer to wander into the deep $7's if it's super nice and clean ....... down Retail Rd.? finish any service, get with the gods of detail, run a super Ad at: $10,499 *asking* and cast it away at $9,5/$9,9 ..... if it's nice, it shouldn't last long (properly done) it's a low mileage XLE ......
Let me know ...................

Good description - "tanks" ......
It's a 03 M45 with itty bitty miles and it's got all the stuff ... good color for the area, we've been to lotsa $2.00 Swirlomatic car washes and the rear bumper has been used as a launching pad for somebodys golf clubs ...... these are pretty nice drivers .. if ya clean it up, it's worth in and around the $24/$25ish range on the trade side ....... "buy-out is $30,948" .... nice cars, but the new ones are probably making a "BIG" difference ... $539 a month.? make the payments and enjoy the ride -- but get a detail.!
Terry.

I have a family member that totaled a car last week in a head-on collision (Luckily injuries were no more serious than several broken bones). The accident was the faulty of the other party, and we are now dealing with their insurance adjuster. Here's the ride I need a fair retail figure on:
2003 Buick LeSabre "Custom"
Metallic Bronze skin with beige cloth guts.
46K miles
Has all of the typical Buick power stuff, and the CD player.
No sunroof, and it has hub caps instead of alloys.
All service was up to date, and done at GM dealer (new brakes just a few days before the accident - although my relative didn't even have a chance to use them during the the wreck).
Interior was better than Average, but not quite hovered in - exterior was in great shape, with no significant dings or scratches (guess there's no way to prove that with the car being a mangled mess now anyway).
I am seeing figures on the net from anywhere between $10,500 and $14,500. I assume that everything is negotiable with the car value part of the settlement (because after all, we are selling the car, and they are buying).
I am simply needing to know what a fair retail value would be for the car - this has nothing to do with the other parts of the settlement (medical, etc...) that we are working on with them as a seperate matter.
Thanks a Lot!!!
Looking for trade-in value on this one:
2003 Nissan 350Z Enthusiast located in Northern Virginia
Manual Transmission
20,000 miles
Silver over Black cloth interior
Exterior in good condition, just a few small rock chips on front end
Interior looks new
Tires probably about 50%
All scheduled maintenance done
No accidents or damage
Thanks in advance.
I'd go one step further.. at $2K and $1K, I wouldn't trade either one of these..
The GSR will bring $2K in a heartbeat on the private market... you wouldn't even have to take the french-fry wrappers out..
If you can fix the air in the Maxima for $500 or less, I'd do it... Even with the handshaker, that is a $3K car on the private market..
regards,
kyfdx

Love your summation of the features - wish I'd put those in the ad!
You were right about dealer trade offers - CarMax appraiser said it was a great clean van, but said they only offer KBB "fair condition" wholesale, regardless of actual condition. Not sure if this is universally true or they were just giving me a line. Offered $6.5k.
Anyway didn't matter, cause I knew I was heading down "retail road" - sprung for a nice detail, and placed the ad at $10k before seeing your response, but seems I was in the ballpark.
Will let you know how it goes.
If you have the factory radio, put it back in. If it's a fairly new stereo and speakers, you can sell them on eBay.
2002 Sienna LE 'Symphony'

3.0 L V6 FWD
23500 Miles
Color: Gold/Biege
Options: Power Door, JBL Sound, power drivers seat, AC, AT, Side airbags Alloy Wheels, abs roof rack, 4 captians seats, towing package
Condition:
Exterior: No dents. 1 ding, and a few clearcoat scratches (not into the paint)
Interior: Could use a detailing, but can be cleaned up. Some scratches in the cargo area.
Tires: OEM. abotu 50% wear
Brakes: Original, I am unsure of % remaining
Maint: Per dealer spec (3000 Mile oil changes)
Reason for (maybe) getting rid of it: Wife wants a wagon...not a van. Depending on the value, I will either make her keep the van, or we buy a wagon. Just not sure. I currently owe 10,500.
First off, let me thank you for all the help yu provide us with in this forum.
I'm getting tempted by the new body style 'Stang... so I'd like to know what I could get for my current one.

2003 Ford Mustang (bought in September ’02)
Body Style: coupe (deluxe)

Options: upgraded audio (mach MP3 player), sport package

Just had the front bumper professionally re-painted to get rid of chips and other minor scratches caused by rocks and other road debris (can’t really tell, body shop did an outstanding job). No stains on the upholstery or carpet. Very clean interior (no eating or smoking in my car!)
Tires: New Michelins (bought a week before the 30K service)
Maintenance: oil changes every 3k + all scheduled maintenance at the dealer, with the exception of the 30K service, which was done at Firestone (they quoted half what the dealer wanted) complete records from day one

===============================
Rolling down Collins avenue ........
We have this 01 Porsche Boxster (no "S", right.?) ...
It's black with black guts, it's a meat clever, it's black, we got the sport pack, it's black, big tunes, it's black, lights, wheels, looooow miles and I don't think I mentioned this - it's black ....... if-if-if the service is 110%, no Swirlomatic car washes, absolutely no paint by numbers, no curb burners, no Swiss army knives in the seats and it "stands and drives" like an 04 with 5k ....... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $22's, maybe the low low low low low low low low low low $23's on a cold and cloudy day - the miles save it and the color flat kills it .. black and black in Florida.? .. have you thought about taking a cab...? .....
Bank One will negotiate - "how much" is the question ... I would wait til' October 1st then get with the Regional leasing guy (not the dealer) and try to work out some terms, just be nice, patient and negotiate .. keep in mind, it ain't their cars, they're office people so you need to get a Mano a Mano thing going on -- by that time they will be looking at the auction reports ............ If I was to guess, I would be thinkin' $25ish ... but I hope you do better.
don't forget the update ...!
Terry :shades:
Yes, no "S" and black/black actually it's triple black, black paint, black interior with black leather seats and 22k was the figure I had in mind to start the negotiations but I will not pay over 24K for it...this car is in a very nice condition!
Thanks Terry
BTW: I love black cars may be why my friends call me "black sabbath"
Milwaukee/WI
2005/Ford/Explorer XLT
4.0 L 6cyl
4WD
9,000 Miles
Gold (Goldish)
Tan Leather Seats and Third Row Seat. All other standard equipment
including tow package. Dual climate control.
Dealer is asking $24,000 and said I could "probably have it" for $21,500.
============================
In the land of Harley ...... we have a 05 Exploder XLT 4wd, it's the V6, it has 9k, the color is good for any area, we got some hydes and the 3rd seat, dual breeze and a little tow pack action ........
If it wasn't used in a drive-by shooting, no weekends spent at Maaco, clean history and the service is 100% ... then the dealer probably paid in and around the low/mid $18's, might have spent too much time at the topless joint down the street and rolled the tall $18's in it, maybe ...... $21,500 is a fair *asking* price, but I have a feelin' that $20/$20,5ish will get her done .. lots of them around at the auctions, it's summer and I don't see no snow .. l.o.l.....
Let me know .........................................

I hope everyone is okay.! .......... can't knock those Buicks for safety and reliability ....
This one is a "(it was) " 03 Lesabre custom .. sounds like a base as soon as I heard the word "hubcaps", it has 46k and we got some tunes ...... this is an insurance deal, so you need to get them into the Kbb/Nada book .. trade side, it's worth in and around the mid/tall $8's and it's worth the mid $10's on the Retail side .. the miles are semi tall and it's a base with the stuff ........ remember, when you finally agree on a price then is the time to hit them with the tax -- follow..?
Terry
First dealer started from $1,500 and came upto $3,050 after negotiating for an hour. I told them that it's not what I was expecting and will decide after visiting other dealers.
Second dealer started with $2,000 and came only upto $2,300.
I really need help here from senior members (terry) . Please guide me on $$$ should I look for.

The car needs tires and brakes before it will be ready for sale on a dealer lot.
Is it 100% factory or are there other aftermarket options added?
You will need the numbers from Terry for NYC, but around here it would have an asking price of between $5,000 and $7,000 on any local area dealers lot.
$3,000 trade side? You went to multiple dealers and had similar trade offers. My gut feeling is that since multiple dealers came up with similar trade numbers, it might just be what the that specific car is worth.

You drove 40k in 2 years .......? have you thought about getting a bus pass..?
Thanks for the info ........ anyway ................... we have this 99 Hoooonda EX .. it's a 2dr, we got the auto thing, color is ok for the area and it has all of the EX stuff ......... the miles ain't your friend here and we need new stoppers and round things, you say the service has been 110%, plus it's a 2dr ....... so if this dude hasn't been in any battles at Wal-Mart, no curb burners, the interior hasn't been used as a test kitchen for KFC and we have Arctic Air ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $2's low/mid $3's, might "maybe" be worth the tall $3's if it glows in the dark, but it doesn't ...... that said - based on your post, you're stealing the SE and what is the worth of the Civic to the dealer ..? he ain't going to clean it and sell it, and "if" he does, he'll have to drop another $500 into it to make it right .... this one will go to the local wholesaler or the auction, and auctions cost $$ -- so whats it worth to the dealer.?
Me personally, I would send it down Retail Rd ... finish any service, get with the Dukes of Detail, get a super batch of nice pics and lock and load into the Big paper and net side for: $6,495 *asking* .. and cry and whimper at $5,5/$5,9 -- but I'd take it .........
Happy hunting and let me know .................. :shades:

We got his 03 Nissan 350Z Enthusiast with 20k ......... the miles are low, the rubber is weak, the tranny is right, the color works, service has been done and we have a few baby meteorite hits to the paint ....... if ...... it's a nice one, no I backed into my neighbors mango tree, no golf club attacks on the rear deck and no time spent at Maaco .... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $19's, might maybe see a dealer wander into the low low low low $20's ........... what figure were you thinking.?

Thanks to you for your valuable input.
What am I expecting: Fair value I can get for the car.
Question I have, What is fair value?
I just got confused with dealers way of evaluating value. One guy started with $1,500 and after negotiating came upto $3,050. That 200% up....
Second started with $2,000 and came up to $2,300. Another 16% up...
Today I will visit one more dealer (.... again I have locked price for CRV SE at 23,400 with this dealer) and will try to get arond $3,600 for Civic. Let's see how that goes.
Thanks again.
Bus Pass: I will, after getting CRV.....
Will try one more time with another dealer, lets see how that goes.
I will give keys, if s/he come close to $3,600.
That's not THAT many miles in 2 years..........my car is just over a year old and will turn 43k this week. I also heard about an 04 Tahoe that was being shopped around Fairbanks that has a whopping 97k on it.
Yes, I really do take care of my cars. I've been a long time lurker. I love doing all the beauty treatments myself, and I usually get a lot of compliments on how my car looks :shades:
I loved cars since I was a little girl and would sit on the driveway with my dad while he worked on old cars that he would buy, fix and re-sell. It was like a hobby, but it also gave him some cool extra bucks, and us two some great bonding time.
What happened with this baby Ruby (Yes, I named her Ruby 'cause I loved her color), is that I got into it being in a bad situation. It was the first and only time I did that. I'm pretty good with money, and I felt really bad doings omething I knew it was financially against all my good senses... I don't do that often, I swear I have a 795 FICO and I pay my credit cards in full every month, so the car loan is my only debt.
Here's the full story: because of a financially unfavorable divorce, where my ex had all the debt, and I had none... and thanks to community property I had to take over a big chunk of his debt, and I wasn't sure how my budget was going to work out, so I traded in my fully loaded Celica GT
I love Toyotas, and the Corolla was a good car... but no power at all! I just had to get rid of it... traded it in only 7 months after I drove it out of the dealership  , feeling really bad to trade so badly upside down, but I promised myself to pay off a lot more than the regular payment, and I have already paid off over half of what I originally owed... so I know I' doing good in the payment department.
I actually thought I was in a worse position.
Anyway, now that I have all the info here's my game plan (will not trade upside down, especially when I love the car I already have):
Keep on my extra $ on the payments till 'm in the black (I'd rather get the tax break) and get a good deal in a '05 convertible at the end of this year. Put at least $2,000 cash down.
With those numbers I could get a 48 mo. loan that I should pay off in 3 yrs.
I like getting a lower payment that I can afford to be on the safe side in case something happen and I need extra cash.
I'll keep you posted!
Thanks again!!!
Sandy
At 50 mph, that would be 860 hours on the road a year ... 17 hours per week ... yikes ... and in Alaska weather ...
But look at the additional cost/risk if I try to get in retail market.
But that will involve replacing breaks ($300) and making car look more presentable (additional $500).
also, If I don't sell within month then I need to go back again for servicing ($200). I drive almost 3,000 mile/month and will need to replace tire (additional $400) in another two-three month.
All adds to $1,100.
Thanks.

I'm sorry, but I gotta comment on this ....... lets get nuts - have the front brakes put in $200, have Superman do the detail $125, big fat Ad $75ish and misc $100 .... don't wanna drive it and get it all dirty and add all those miles.? make sense to me .. Thrifty, Budget, etc, for $99/$125 a week and $250 (or less) for 2 .........
Hmmm, lets do the math ... carry the one, divide by 2 add the six, carry the five, plus the 2, subtract the 3 ..... ahhh, hmm, lets see, ahh, hmmm, duh, I almost got it, uhhh ... that would be in and around $750ish for 2 weeks, "if needed ......
*dealer: $3,000/$3,600 .....
*usnycus: $5,500/$5,900
minus the $750ish equals ... hmmm, ah, I'm getting it, carry the 2 equals in and around a $1,150 more, thats if you only see $5,500 ........ I could be wrong, Mathias has my crystal ball and my neighbor drove over my Abacus ........ you must have tons of money ...... :P
Terry
At 50 mph, that would be 860 hours on the road a year ... 17 hours per week ... yikes ... and in Alaska weather ...
Yup, sounds about right (except the speed part). I commute 164 miles 5 days/week for work. Zippy had 52 miles on her when we bought her July 21, 2004.
With the road construction my commute (one way) has gone from an hour and 15 minutes to close to 2 hours.
With as much of a beating as Zippy has taken its about time for a new car.........hmmmmmmmm.
*Trying to rein it back in* Miles definatly hurt at trade in time, Zippy will probably die with us since I think at this point she's worth close to zero. (Base ZX3 with ABS, silver/black, 43k miles, manual tranny) Last time I ran her by a car lot (was a Protege calling my name) was at 37k miles, was offered $7k ACV.
