    Two quick questions -

    1) Being that you are in the Sunshine State, what do you do as a dealer when you see that that the next tropical storm is heading in your direction to save all of your inventory?

    2) With all of the coastal flooding and areas where inventory is "underwater" literally, what can people do to make sure that the "great deal" that they see on the lot in December (or March) is not currently on some lot in one of the affected area?

How is that for two belt high fast balls?

OK.... hoping to get a feel for this car. I really feel like we need to cut back our bills a bit, and trading the Z for this could help. And at least it would still be a quick car with a stick... so ....

    5-speed
leather, heated, moonroof, spoiler, climate control, etc.

I don't know what he's asking, but I'm thinking this is, what? a $17K car retail? (crossing fingers)

Not to put words in Terry's mouth, but I usually see dealers around here (Kentucky) pull as much of their inventory as possible inside the shop area before a strong thunderstorm or hail. The expensive stuff gets put inside first. Even if you are insured, you still have an obligation to mitigate damages.

Considering the current mess down South, I feel a little small worrying about such things and mighty lucky. . . a thousand dollars here or there seem unimportant. Nevertheless, life goes on. Keeping GM in business is no small task. Love my Tahoe. Thanks for the info.

I was just wondering what Edmunds would offer for a trade in Value of a 2002 Cadillac EXT, power locks, power moonroof, air conditioning, rear defroster, ABS brakes, power seats, power mirrors, roof rack, running boards, air bag, tow hitch, automatic transmission, power windows, cd player, cruise control, leather seats, seat heater, 4 wheel drive, bed liner, TV/DVD alloy wheels. My vehicle is in excellent condition with no damage. I was looking into trading it for two cars, for me and my fiance.

I am trading in my 350z Touring model and want to know if the trade in they are giving me is a good deal or not. Kelly blue book and Edmunds prices are so far apart I am not sure.
The car is in great condition. Never been in accident, been in the garage, no insurance claims. Driven by one owner/female. They want to give me $22,500 for the car and I getting the new car for $250 above invoice. Isn't this price a little low?

Hope the oracle can help. My FIL just passed away, and the family asked for help valuing his cars (gee, wonder why they asked me??).

Anyway, there are 2, both located near Albany NY:

    1) 1993 Caddy Sedan de Ville. V8, 2 tone brown/tan, with tanish leather. Normally equipped I guess, no moonroof though. It does have some kind of basket wire wheels. Never hit, no rust (always been garaged, normally not driven in snow).

Only 37K on this old mans car, so I guess not driven much at all. Maybe Lemko would want it??

    2) 2005 Chevy Impala Beige/tan cloth. Base model, so I don't think it has any options to speak of. Only about 3 months old, with a whopping 1,500 miles on it now. Still smells new. I think he paid 17ish for it (employee pricing), so I imagine the cost per mile on this one is going to be steep.

As always, help is greatly appreciated.

...Nothing, lol.... they don't buy any cars, they are a pricing "guide".

Also, if you want any sort of value here, please post the mileage for your vehicle, very important in the valuation.

I’m back! Well, never really left, but I haven’t been posting. It’s already a done deal. Dad went and did this without talking to me. I don’t think it was that great of a deal. He would have been better off buying a new 2005 Odyssey for $1,500 more, but here’s the deal.

    He traded:

    Location: Columbus, OH
    Year/Make/Model: 2003/Honda Accord
    Body Style: 4dr, EX
    Engine: V6
    Driveline: FWD/Auto
    Mileage: 70,000 (I know)
Color: Dark bluish gray interior and exterior
Major Options: alloys, sun roof, leather
Condition: Great condition, no damage, tires at 50%
He said they gave him “$13 something” in trade

    He bought:

    Location: Columbus, OH
    Year/Make/Model: 2004/Honda/Odyssey
    Body Style: EX Cloth
    Engine: V6/auto
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 8,500
    Color: dark red/tan
    Major Options: alloys
    Condition:
Great condition, no damage, original tires, maybe 25% worn

He paid $24,000. That was the asking price, and the dealer wouldn’t budge.

So, how did he do? Thanks Terry.

Dad just brought the van over for me to see. It is really clean, and he looked at the paperwork again and got a $1,200 discount, so I feel a lot better at $22,800 for the van.

too bad, qwalls; a new EX cloth ('06) is $28395, likely with no discounts to be had.

How is that for two belt high fast balls?** ..
    =================================

**two belt high fast balls** ........ heavy question first thing in the mornin', especially with whats been going on, I don't even want to "think" about the next one ...... that said I'll have to admit, the state of Florida handled last years blistering major hurricanes with *Brutal Efficiency* .... whats going on in the sisters states right now is mind numbing, the state and local officials in these states should be SHOT.! .... but thats a subject for a different time and place ...

Anyway .. we make sure all the customers have been called to pick up their vehicles .l.o.l... and we use the service lifts and service departments for storage, plus 3 of my stores have service canopies that I had added to meet the 120mph "wind load" factor which is good for another 25/30 vehicles each, I also have a "standing contract" with 5 of the "U Store" em's which is good for maybe another 50/120 vehicles depending on whats going on ..... board up the windows, roll down the shutters and pray ........

As far as all the flooding in all those cars and trucks ... the bad part is, the insurance adjustors will go numb after they see the first 200/300 .. then they will figure this one can be fixed, that one can be repaired, etc, etc ......

Buyers need to be looking deep ... Carsmack for starters to check where it came from ...... then start at the floor and work your way up ...... that means you should be looking at the seat frames connected to the floors and they usually rust ... power seats motors will show new and usually the wiring will be put in sideways, seat belts are a pretty good giveaway because the fabric has a tendency to stain and usually can't be removed ... the rear seats need to removed, or on split seats looked at real closely for watermarks, carpet smell or a new paint smell - most carpets will be dried and painted ... run the air conditioner for a few minutes for smells ......... look at the Vin# in the dash and the doors they have a tendency to rust and to watermark, the actual wiper blade frame - they rust ... trunk, pull the carpet and look into the lowest cavity of the trunk probably the spare area .......... doors and door jams, have a pro pull the leather/cloth off and look inside the door frame and window motors ... hood, open it and look at the radiator frame - see any stains or waterlines.? ... when you start-it up does it have that blub blub blub coming out of the exhaust pipe.? - smell and taste it ...

The best way is to get it on a lift and give it a super "eyeball" with a pro and lots of light ...... a $100 spent can save you $10,000 ....

    Update:

Dealer gave me $7000 for a 2 door Golf GL 5 speed with 47k on it and I think pretty clean car. I traded it on an Accord LX lease (details over there) and I think they put some of the Marketing Support Money into the trade to show me a big number. They have so many SUVs on the used lot they were thrilled with someone wanting to trade in an efficient car. I was really tempted to keep the Golf, but got the Accord for $20/month on a better lease and it will fit the family which the Golf wouldn't.

Good Luck to everyone who is playing the game this weekend (car shopping) and good luck to Terry on your trip to help out! Thumbs Up to you!

I would like to thank you all for showing concern and help in our time of need. I live 30 m north of NO in a little town called Abita Springs(we are world famous for our water and beer). I feel very fortunate my family and home are ok. Most are not so lucky. I still have a job and family in Baton Rouge has taken us in. 6-8 weeks with no power and a baby due yesterday. Thanks to all that have donated, and to everyone else please help if you can. Many people had nothing BEFORE the storm. I'm sure once we get power we'll have someone living w/us. Thanks Terry, I am so touched at the generosity shown by this great nation of ours. Thanks, Bryan

Kudos to you for the help you are sending to the states that need it. You ARE a hero!

Our store manager and district manager at Wal-Mart talked about the devistation at the meeting Wednesday morning. I can't imagine what those families are going through.

Walmart has sent 452 trucks of water, $1 million to the Red Cross, set up a relief fund for the associates who are affected, and is providing email to customers and associates so they can contact families down there.

I'm glad to see the USA pulling together in this horrible time of need. We too have family in that area that we haven't heard from as of yesterday........my mom was trying to contact them.

Nice response! I had to register to get the scoop without the bull...

I was at a dealer this evening ready to buy a new sled but got slammed when they returned what they'd pay for my ttruck. I have a pretty clean..REAL clean 2001 Dodge Ram SLT/Sport that is bright silver and has 70K on it 5.9 etc...

I did not expect to get wholsale according to N.A.D.A which is 9K and I certainly didn't expect to be offered 5K. Jeez! 5K? The sales manager said "Well ya know with Katrina and all" and then I left. Man, any advise will be appreciated so please pelt me with your feedback. Thank you very much!

Yikes... well, Terry is out for a while, it seems. Hmmmm.... guess I'm going to have to subscribe to Galves (oh, a curse word, i know!) for a week.

ANYWAY... here's the deal. We went out test driving ... AGAIN. Thinking about that whole "hey, let's save a bit of money by trading in the Z and possibly making room for the baby, too."

Checked out an '00 Jag S-type first ... really nice car. 28K miles, sport package, nav, V8, etc. Thing is, they were asking $25K. Edmunds says that's an $18K car. hmmmmm.... Dealer wouldn't budge at all AND wanted to give me $3K under real-world on my Z. OUCH!

So, went down the road and checked out the Lincoln LSs. Dealer was MUCH more reasonable. Here's the 411:
'02 LS V8. Sport and cold weather packages. 32K miles. Minty metallicy green kinda color.
Price has been "reduced to a rock bottom" $17,995 WITH the certified warranty.

Offering $23,500 on the Z (you said high 23 to 24 a few weeks or month ago).

So it seems they are all there on my trade .... the certified LS is, according to edmunds, $22K or so. So it SEEMS like a good deal.... but, heck, yer the only one with the REAL numbers. ;)

if anyone else has numbers in terry's absense, please chime in.

by the way, i'm proud of your volunteer work, terry. good job! you make up for us slackers.

The price seems in line with what other dealers are charging for a similar LS. Trade on the Z seems fair too. If you like the car then it seems the numbers are good.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
You're getting the kind of car you've been talking about (I think), certified, + walking away with $5500. There might be a few hundred more $$ there you could try for, maybe. Occasionally a dealer hits you with both a very good price on a nice car, & a good price for your trade. If you like the LS.......depends on how much longer you want to keep shopping I guess. I'd be pretty tempted, myself.

We just bought a 2002 RX 300 and decided to sell our 2000 Sienna XLE on our own. Can anyone give me an idea on what to ask? Here is the scoop:
    Western burbs of Chicago
    Mileage - 67350 - One-owner
Denin blue with grey leather, moon roof, roof rack, usual XLE features, replaced original 6-CD changer with JVC single CD, MP3 and XM ready
Excellent condition, non-smoker, gargaged, Mobil 1 oil/filter change every 4,500K, hand washed 90% of time with annual Zaino clay-bar, newer brakes and rotors, about 35K on Yokohama Avid Tourings, all maintenance records. Had one minor parking lot incident, resulting in new rear bumper about 6 months after purchase. No dings or dents, some minor scratches. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,692
ok, so i went ahead and subscribed to Galves. Good thing, too. Edmunds' $22K number on that Lincoln is ridiculous. Trade-in is $15,500. So, really, the $17,995 is just a fair price. Probably could even have another $500 or so to play with.

$23,500 is right on for the Z.

But now I'm thinking. With the upgraded engine and extra standard features in '03 (adjustable pedals, cooled seats, etc) ... it seems it SHOULD only cost me $1000 or so more to step up. Trade-in on an '03 with 32k miles is about $16,500 and an '04 is only about $700 more. So the search continues. That same dealer with the '02 has an '03, but they're asking price is pretty high and they were really unwilling to deal on it.

There are always "reasons" to blow off a good deal on a nice car, or house, & continue the Search for the Holy Grail. (This is from someone who's driven ex-spouse, ex-g.f., etc. crazy with eternal car shopping quests). I don't know the pricing on LS's; but I'm wondering why the dealer wants so much more for an '03, if it "should" cost only $1000 more than an '02.....good luck tho.

Does anyone know the "dealer" trade in value for a 2001 Chevy Impala. Fully loaded minus the sunroof. Onstar, extra security device which is "Locktronics" which, disables the starter until you plug in the matching PC chip which enables it, then you turn the key to start. Florida car all the way if you couldn't tell by the x-tra security. Very clean kept, garage stored, mint condition. no rust or like features anywhere on the vehicle. 61,000 miles however, which are fully 110% highway miles only.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I am thinking of trading in for the new H3 Hummer. Thanks!

    Terry,
Firstly, thanks for all your help.
I bought a 03 Z4 3.0 fully loaded (except the navigation). Sports, premium, convenience package, 36K miles & great condition from So Cal. Bought it for $29.1.
Drove it along the PCH to the bay area today. Lots of fun. Just thought you might be interested in knowing. Just out of curiosity, what do you think about this deal?
    Thanks.

    Hey all,

I have a 99 SAAB 9-3, 4 door hatchback coupe, with sports/turbo package (71K miles, leather interior, sun roof, low profile tires, overall good condition). Head gasket blew and subsequently the engine fouled and started to seize. Ultimately it was covered by warantee although I had to fight for 2 months... during which time I bought another vehicle. So now I have a car with a brand new, SAAB factory built engine with a total of 50 miles on it. Edmonds lists about $5682 for private party sale value if the engine had 71K miles. My question is what is a reasonable expected value for the car with a brand new factory engine and dealer maintained and one year left on the extended warantee? I was thinking in the 8K range, any thoughts or suggestions?

Please let me know either on the board or by e-mail. Thanks.

Not a lot of information to go by... Is it like this one, except with more miles?

It's kind of like saying the car has new tires. The Edmund's price assumes the car is in good condition, tires and engine included. The fact that the engine is recently remanufactured doesn't really add anything to the value, and may detract from it. Case in point, would you want to buy a used, European car that is so unreliable and/or neglected that it grenaded an engine at 71,000 miles? Place an ad with one of the Saab enthusiast groups and hope for the best.

The car was bought in FL, so I'm guessing it's the typical snowbird deal.

It's at an estate sale my wife got tipped off to -- she's an antique dealer, so once in a while, there's a car involved, too. It smells a little, but it's not a smoker's car... just kinda dirty, not been detailed etc.

Maintenance seems to be OK; t-belt's been done a couple years back, plus the umpteen recalls. Plus a few bills for electrical gremlin exorcism... usual Audi stuff.

It sat in a fairly dark garage, so I can't be sure, but it looked to be free of major body work... the trunk lid was slightly askew, so I'm guessing the bumper got pushed in a little and it got a new cover.
I wasn't getting the warm fuzzies from the car, but it wasn't a rat by a long shot.

They are asking $7,700, which strikes me as OK for someone who really wants it. It's a one-owner car, and the paperwork says they paid $38 for it. I don't think I'm interested; if it were a q wagon, I'd be all over it... but I'd like to know what the numbers should be.

    TIA,
    -Mathias

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure of the trade-in value for a 2003 Audi A6 2.7T (Bose, Cold Weather, Sport Package) with 63,000 miles. My local dealer gave me a price of $16,200 (indicated worth 23,700 but deducted 7,500 for miles). Just seems way out of line.

.....Audis are expensive little buggers to keep around, eh? I mean, 63k is a lot of miles for an '03, but wasn't that a ~$50k car new three years ago?

    where do you live?

$17,250 trade-in, according to the devilish little book used by these dealers in the northeast.

$23,100 with a $5850 deduct for the miles.

Location: Caldwell, NJ (near Newark, NJ and New York, NY)
    Year/Make/Model: 1998 Honda Accord
    Body Style: 2dr
    Engine: V6 - Automatic Transmission
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage:126,000
    Color: White exterior
    Options:
    Alarm system
    Power driver's seat
    Condition:
A couple (2 or 3) very small dings
Minor scraches (no more than an inch and very shallow)
Tires - all new (within 4 months old)
    Brakes - working very well
Transmission: in need of repair or replacement
Timing belt replaced at around 110,000 miles
Alternator replaced at around 110,000 miles
    Tune-up at around 110,000 miles

Until the transmission went the other day, it drove about as well as when it was new with very good acceleration. Suspension is in good shape and the car handles smoothly.

I've run various reports and from them determined the trade-in value (WITH the bad transmission) could be between $2,000 and $3,500 but I don't fully trust automated appraisals.

well, IF the car was all there, its worth about $4k .... given the tranny trouble ... maybe $2500?

    Another Accord V6 transmission failure.
How many transmissions has that car had so far?
If it is the one that came with the car, it has an engineering defect which can cause premature failure. Honda extended the transmission warranty I think to 8 years or 100K miles, any Honda dealer willing to verify this?

As it is less than 8 years old, even with the miles you still probably have a case and might be able to push Honda into repairing it, especially if you had the transmission service performed per the maintenance schedule. It is at least worth giving it a shot to get the car driveable.

The transmission warranty, if this one was covered, was 7yr/100K.. chances are, he is out of it by now...

It could be out of the 'goodwill' Honda warranty extension, but I have seen them repair transmissions that failed at 150K that were never replaced. It was a 'latent' defect that Honda was aware could cause failure. As a result if it did fail due to the known defect, it could be covered with little effort on the owners part. With much effort the owner would probably win any small claims court case as long as it was properly maintained (seen it before, but on Chrysler's tranny).

Depending on the motivation of the owner, it certainly cannot hurt to try and get Honda to either repair, or pro-rate the transmission repair due to the known issues they have had starting in 98. Honda's are suppose to have a reputation to be major repair and trouble free for 200K+.
