They will make a purchase offer on any car, even those they would not sell on their lot. In my experience with them, whether the car will be kept or auctioned has little effect on the offering price. I've sold two cars outright, one to CarMax, and one to a dealership. Carmax will offer a fair wholesale price for the car, but you may be able to do better by shopping around.

Well ............... Nada is a retail book, not a wholesale book .. Kbb is going to be the closest (in this instance) .. and surprising enough, Galves is sitting pretty high .... dealers go by auction reports, not reading material .. and reading material usually ends up in the bathroom, if ya know what I mean ....... Dealers can duplicate your vehicle (without the pole attack) at any of the auctions in your area for the high $9's low low $10's, and when they take a vehicle in trade they usually want to be "at least" $500 back of auction $$, depending on the vehicle and the miles .. so none of these are Gospel, just a ballpark figure .....
I think where your getting confused - is in the numbers .. because noooobody is going to give you $14,800 for the truck ...... you need to be looking at the DIFFERENCE figure .... your trade and "X" amount of bucks ....

Sorry for the delay! New baby and crazy days at work got in the way. Long story short, I actually bought the CRV as it came off-lease. Twin Cities Honda dealers all wanted about $1,000 more for an Odyssey than the rest of the country seemed to be paying, so I decided to wait. (Plus, the buyout price was super-cheap v. the value of the CRV.)

thank you. so i disclosed the transmission problem to the dealer they still gave me $3,000 for the 98 Accord. I figure, the KBB value on the open market is between 5-6,000 in good condition so if I take out the expense of a new trans, I think I got a great trade-in deal. Plus, they came down a decent amount on the '05 CRV so I left the dealership that day with my new car. Thanks for all the help.
Sold MINI Convertible to Carmax for $23,000. Offers ranged from a generous $20 at the MINI dealer to $21 while trying to trade at a Honda dealer. Honda dealer would not come down off of a $19,495 price on a non-CPO Accord EX V6 coupe, red, tan leather, with 38K miles. I passed on that deal and sold the car to Carmax. The only problems with the body are the rear bumper, which is dinged up from the on-street parking in the city. I think most of the scuffs could be compounded out, leaving few minor blemishes.I had new brakes installed on all four wheels less than 1 year ago. I also have 6 months left on the 7 year/50,000 mile $0 deductible extended warranty I purchased. The KBB trade-in price said approx $4100, the KBB retail price close to $8900, and the private sale price $6560.

Down Retail Rd: super bath, super Ad, super everything and: $9,900 *asking* and $9,500ish gets a new owner real fast ..... that said, this is one of those times I would probably trade with the tax savings ...
Your biggest competition here.? .. is going to be every "4 banger" low mileage clean Camry in the area ..
The reason.? .. folks drive 4 banger Camry's in droves and have really no need for the V6, so getting a ton more $$ ain't going to work in this particular situation ..
Just a quick update on that XC90. I now have the dealer here offering $34,000 for that vehicle, which seems to me a bit ridiculous for a 2005 vehicle with not-particularly-high mileage and these options. Perhaps the sticking point is the pricey options, but if a similarly configured 2006 right now gives a sticker price over $48,000, could the one-year old vehicle really be worth only $34,000?

It's a 71,000 mile carrera cabriolet, but it has an automatic (tiptronic) transmission. Other than normal use it appears to be pretty well taken care of and the current owner has all service records. What do you think a fair number for this car is?
It's "possible". What is that, maybe $10K less than you paid? Not unusual for a $40-$50K vehicle to drop $10K the first year. And you're probably getting close to bupkus for the Nav & back-up beeper. FWIW, Edmunds "TMV" on a brand new '05 with those options is $41,785.

$34,000 isn't ridiculous at all. When I priced a 2006 similar to yours on carsdirect.com the MSRP was $47,995 and had a carsdirect price of $43,607. $7600 depreciation isn't much considering the dealer still has to make some profit on it and they only have about $7000 to work with.

I think--in addition to the mileage, & the exact options/model--the important thing with a car like this is condition, condition, condition. Is it like, perfect, does it look brand new? or average? Posting all the info on "the form" here about the car & location may induce the Pricing Guru to give you a $$ figure. Oh, & don't forget to have it checked out by a Porsche specialist, & also a very good body shop if possible.....

Not my intent to argue with you at all, Chile, but what would be considered typical mileage these days? Maybe it's just a personal perspective, since I used to put at least 30k per year on my cars, but for a vehicle a year old 16,700 didn't seem excessive.
In any case, it may just be one of those things that someone like me who isn't in the business doesn't understand. In the past I have had the impression that, say, a one-year-old vehicle with 35,000 miles is considered "high mileage" and can actually be seen as worth LESS than a three-year-old vehicle with the same 35,000 miles. I don't understand that one at all... It is still a more recent model, and newer in every sense that isn't directly dependent on mileage.
By the way, thanks to those who contributed thoughts on this thread - we finally settled on $35,000. The circumstances in this case were somewhat unusual, so it was not a straightforward trade-in but rather needed to be closer to retail (I was originally going to handle the transaction as a private party sale, but due to a snafu at Volvo - long story - I didn't have the vehicle available to trade it in until it was too late to do it as a private party sale - so they were sort of under obligation to work this out for me).

Two scratches in the paint, two small nicks in the windshield -- otherwise, the exterior's in great shape. Cigarette lighter doesn't work; the windshield wiper fluid... thingy (pipe? Tube?) doesn't work -- it appears to be clogged somehow, and the dealership would have had to remove the hood to fix it. Wasn't worth it to me. Interior isn't perfect, but it's okay -- no rips.) New tires (June or July), flushed the radiator this past summer, new front brake pads. Regular oil changes done.
I'm wondering if it would be unreasonable for me to hope for $1,000?

visited the Honda dealer, and got an appraisal while I was there. They dropped 13 even on the table, but my experience is they tend to low ball trades up front.
If they had offered mid 14s to start, they might have made a sale today. But, if I do decide to buy something soon, I will shoot for 14K on it, assuming a strong deal on the new side. With the sales tax credit, I would have to get about 15K on a private sale to be even, and you can get a new one for 16.5ish!

Personally, the car sounds pretty cheap .. perhaps too cheap.
I would take the car to your trusted local mechanic and have a thorough inspection especially of the transmission and see how much it will cost to keep the car on the road.
Generally, any car that is running will generally get $1000. And Hondas command stupid money. That is why I am seeing red flags here.
By the way, don't buy the car if you cannot live without air conditioning as those type of repairs can be real $$$.
I work at a Honda dealership this car was a trade from one of my customers my boss is willing to sell it to me for the ACV which is $1k I had a tech who is a friend of mine look it over he said it looks great for a 16 year old car w/158,000 miles i'm not so worried about the a/c this car won't be a daily driver since i have a demo i can use to commute to and from work just want the the prelude for a little run around car

Kbb is going to be the closest (in this instance) .. and surprising enough, Galves is sitting pretty high .... dealers go by auction reports, not reading material .. and reading material usually ends up in the bathroom, if ya know what I mean ....... Dealers can duplicate your vehicle (without the pole attack) at any of the auctions in your area for the high $9's low low $10's, and when they take a vehicle in trade they usually want to be "at least" $500 back of auction $$, depending on the vehicle and the miles .. so none of these are Gospel, just a ballpark figure .....
I think where your getting confused - is in the numbers .. because noooobody is going to give you $14,800 for the truck ...... you need to be looking at the DIFFERENCE figure .... your trade and "X" amount of bucks ....

If-if-if-if it's super clean - and the paint hasn't been beaten' by the Michigan winters, no paint by numbers, no Swiss Army Knife interior, the rubber is deeper than Steven Seagal's new hair transplant and the service and the history is 110% ...... then the dealer probably paid in and around the low/mid $15's, maybe the low low low low low $16's if he missed the 3rd seat .. so figure a this and a that and it probably hits the table in the mid/tall $16's ..... $18,900 ..?? he ain't trying to hurt anyone .. but $18ish sounds more like it, no 3rd seat ..........

We're sittin' on a 01 Benzomatic ML320 ~ fore by fore ...... the miles are waaaay low for the year, the color is right anywhere, we got some bun warmers with those hydes, we got a hole in the roof, smoker, the round things are almost new, stoppers could be newish, we got some dog hair (not good) it's been serviced and we have a few K-mart kisses ................. if it's nice, the dog hair goes away, no midnight visits at Maaco, no curb burners and no Bonnie and Clyde interior ... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $16's, might "maybe" get a dealer to wander into the low low $17's ....... what type of vehicle are you trading for ....?

No hits/runs/errors, once I detail it up it will look good enough for the front row (pretty much like new still, just minimal wear/tear of the short miles).
Give me a number I like so I can move onto the latest/greatest (or at least something with 4 doors)

Sorry for the delay! New baby and crazy days at work got in the way. Long story short, I actually bought the CRV as it came off-lease. Twin Cities Honda dealers all wanted about $1,000 more for an Odyssey than the rest of the country seemed to be paying, so I decided to wait. (Plus, the buyout price was super-cheap v. the value of the CRV.)
Look for me to post again when the right time comes! Thanks again.
BTW, the two 2004 SSRs that have been sitting on the lot since November are still there as of two weekends ago ;-)
Here is the update:
Sold MINI Convertible to Carmax for $23,000. Offers ranged from a generous $20 at the MINI dealer to $21 while trying to trade at a Honda dealer. Honda dealer would not come down off of a $19,495 price on a non-CPO Accord EX V6 coupe, red, tan leather, with 38K miles. I passed on that deal and sold the car to Carmax.
Just out of curiosity, what would a fair price for the Accord have been?

Anywaaaaay .... we got this little Mini convert, (guessing, about a $26ish MSRP.?) we got the BRG color and the two-tone hydes, big tunes, big breeze and we got these 1,200 itty bitty miles ...... trade side, in and around the $22/$23 range ..... the handshaker and the color might taketh away .. being summer and having really low miles might save it, they're getting some strong $$ right now ...

It has the premium rims, moonroof, dual power seats, leather interior and single CD AM/FM cassette premium sound system.The interior is in mint condition. The only problems with the body are the rear bumper, which is dinged up from the on-street parking in the city. I think most of the scuffs could be compounded out, leaving few minor blemishes.I had new brakes installed on all four wheels less than 1 year ago. I also have 6 months left on the 7 year/50,000 mile $0 deductible extended warranty I purchased. The KBB trade-in price said approx $4100, the KBB retail price close to $8900, and the private sale price $6560.

Very good condition (a few scratches in rear bumper), no accident/mechanical problem, farly new tire (Toyo, 70% thread left). all record of maintenance.
One dealer offered $8500. I am wondering if I do trade-in or sell to private (I have to sell at least $1000 more than trade-in because of tax savings at the time of trade-in + ad fee for private sale).
I guess the best I can would be $9000 for trade-in. Please let me know how much would the real number and advise me which way to go.

This is a low mileage V6 LE ...... if it's as clean as you think it is, the service is 110% and the rubber is kinda deep .. then the dealer is steppin' right up to the plate, cuz' $8,500 is aaaaaall the money on the trade side ......
Down Retail Rd: super bath, super Ad, super everything and: $9,900 *asking* and $9,500ish gets a new owner real fast ..... that said, this is one of those times I would probably trade with the tax savings ...
Your biggest competition here.? .. is going to be every "4 banger" low mileage clean Camry in the area ..
The reason.? .. folks drive 4 banger Camry's in droves and have really no need for the V6, so getting a ton more $$ ain't going to work in this particular situation ..

It's a 71,000 mile carrera cabriolet, but it has an automatic (tiptronic) transmission. Other than normal use it appears to be pretty well taken care of and the current owner has all service records. What do you think a fair number for this car is?

In any case, it may just be one of those things that someone like me who isn't in the business doesn't understand. In the past I have had the impression that, say, a one-year-old vehicle with 35,000 miles is considered "high mileage" and can actually be seen as worth LESS than a three-year-old vehicle with the same 35,000 miles. I don't understand that one at all... It is still a more recent model, and newer in every sense that isn't directly dependent on mileage.
By the way, thanks to those who contributed thoughts on this thread - we finally settled on $35,000. The circumstances in this case were somewhat unusual, so it was not a straightforward trade-in but rather needed to be closer to retail (I was originally going to handle the transaction as a private party sale, but due to a snafu at Volvo - long story - I didn't have the vehicle available to trade it in until it was too late to do it as a private party sale - so they were sort of under obligation to work this out for me).

Two scratches in the paint, two small nicks in the windshield -- otherwise, the exterior's in great shape.
Cigarette lighter doesn't work; the windshield wiper fluid... thingy (pipe? Tube?) doesn't work -- it appears to be clogged somehow, and the dealership would have had to remove the hood to fix it. Wasn't worth it to me.
Interior isn't perfect, but it's okay -- no rips.)
New tires (June or July), flushed the radiator this past summer, new front brake pads. Regular oil changes done.
I'm wondering if it would be unreasonable for me to hope for $1,000?

Oooookaaay ........ it's a 05 Scion tC, good color, miles are looooow, it's a meat clever and you say "No hits/runs/errors" ..... you know the drill, no KFC in the back seats and no Dutch Boys ..... trade side, in and around the low low $14's, might maybe "could" see a dealer travel into the mid/tall $14's if you been going to church on Sundays and brushing your teeth twice a day ..... the miles giveth and the handshaker taketh away .......................

If they had offered mid 14s to start, they might have made a sale today. But, if I do decide to buy something soon, I will shoot for 14K on it, assuming a strong deal on the new side. With the sales tax credit, I would have to get about 15K on a private sale to be even, and you can get a new one for 16.5ish!

I would take the car to your trusted local mechanic and have a thorough inspection especially of the transmission and see how much it will cost to keep the car on the road.
Generally, any car that is running will generally get $1000. And Hondas command stupid money. That is why I am seeing red flags here.
By the way, don't buy the car if you cannot live without air conditioning as those type of repairs can be real $$$.
Proceed slowly.
