Whatever the seller is smoking, I want some cuz it has to be some pretty good stuff.

There is not quite enough information, but lets assume it is 2WD. In which case if it is 100% ready to sell (not needing tires soon, etc) then a fair asking price would be $4900. Add an extra $1000 or so if it is 4WD.

Real world private party selling price is around 35-40% what this seller is asking.

To paraphrase Terry, does it come with a vintage Patek Phillipe or gold Rolex included? Or is the $10K a typo?
  • mark156mark156 Member Posts: 1,915
Hey Street.. also, another way to get an "idea" of what might be a fair price for just about any vehicle is to check ebay motors.

Many of the vehicles will have a "buy in now price" below the current bid price. This will give you and idea what a dealer or private party is willing to take. A lot of the time, the "buy in now price" is used by dealers. It will give a good ball park figure for the Jeep that you are looking at.

I have to say that I was surprised when you said $10,000 dollars, especially with that many miles.

I do have a friend in San Diego who has 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with almost 250,000 miles. He has it service regularly by an independent shop and it has been a very trust worthy vehicle. To look at it, you would think it had 50,000 miles tops.

    Good luck, Mark

.. ** am thinking of buying a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
First of all, tell me if it is a good car or not.
It is a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Limited trim)
4.0 litre V6 coupled with an auto transmission
    It's got 164K on it
The exterior color is navy blue with a Dark Grey/Black interior
Not many major options except the wood trim which i guess comes standard
It is in an almost untouched condition
The body is totally clear of dirt, scratches, dings and the paint looks very fine to me. The interior is very very clean. Seats don't have a speck of dirt on them although it may need a little vacuuming in the hatch and on the floors.
Tires may need changing but brakes are clear with very little brake dust.
It has never been taken off-road or mis-used and was dealer maintained until the warranty ran out.

    >>>The seller is asking for $10000, is it a good price??..**
    ===================================

    Thats a great price.!! ...............

If ~ you live in Thailand and it missed the Tsunami and it's the only vehicle inside of a 1,000 square miles of anything ....

If it's a "baby-doll 4wd" with all those miles, it's maybe worth $2,500/$3,000 on the trade side .... maybe do $4,900 on the Retail side if it needs -0- ...

$10,000...?!? .. Ernie El's new Corum watch in the console and 8 days at Pinehurst including green fee's and food...? ---- No..?

    Move on ................

Major Options: Upgraded Wheels, Sunroof, Wood inside, Bose Stereo, Thule Bike Rack, Xenon Headlights...Basically Every option available except NAV

    Condition:
Interior and Exterior are in good shape, a couple minor scratches from the Mid-Atlantic winters, but nothing major. Interior is clean, seats look hovered in. All the car needs is a wash to be frontline ready.

Brakes and Tires are all fine.

Car is meticulously serviced, and has been serviced on the Audi recommended intervals and all recommended work has been done. Have all service records, has been serviced at the same dealer we purchased from.

We bought in Summer '04 as a CPO, is still under the 4yr/50,000 mile original warranty, and then has an additional 2yr/24,000 mile CPO warranty when that expires.

Other: We are the 2nd owners, car has been maintained regularly at the Audi dealer and looks great. Unfortunately, I am not so confident about it mechanically. It makes a thunking noise when stopping or turning that the Audi dealer we purchased from and get it serviced at cannot seem to reproduce, even after going for a ride with us in the car and pointing it out. Have taken it to two other dealers with the same results, and have service records to prove they were unable to reproduce it. I'm sure this will reflect poorly when we go to trade or sell it.

Could you give me Trade-In and Retail values for this thing?

    Thanks!

I've been absent for a while - missed Terry's sense of humor...

Looking to replace my 98 Olds Intrigue and the local Ford dealer has the following that I'm interested in...

Tarpon Springs, FL (North of Clearwater)
    2004 Merc Grand Narquis GS
18K miles, gold tan cloth, CD ABS and all standard GS features
    Asking $16988

    Same price on this one:
2003 Merc Grand Marquis LS 38K no-sale green, tan leather, buckets/console/floor shift, ABS, traction control dual power seats, dual exhaust, alloys.

Then there's the 2003 Merc Grand Marquis GS all standard equip with ABS, no CD 31K for 15700.

I like the extra equipment in the 03 LS (coming from buckets/console, I'd find a bench/column shift alien), but I think the lower milease newer one would be the better pick.

Let me know what you think.

Terry: I finally pulled the trigger on a new car and traded in the Audi A4. I actually made the deal in St. Louis, MO as I was up there on a trip and they had a lot of inventory that I was interested in. I traded in on a 2006 CRV, ended up getting the CRV at invoice and 8700 for the trade. The average according to KBB, Edmunds and NADA websites was still about 10K, but this is the most I was offered by any of the 4 dealers I visited over the past couple of months. Interestingly enough, CARMAX would have bought it for 9500 in Oct, I should have just sold to them back then. It took me a while but I finally got the deal done.

Anyway, thanks for you replies and help.

can't remember if I posted an update. Yes, I finally did get rid of my '05 tC, and ended up getting an '05 (new, leftover) Accord EX-L to replace it (the family is much happier).

I used the 14K as the price to get, and finally got 2 dealers up to that (after much gnashing of teeth, etc). Of course, hard to tell when working the difference, but assuming 14k trade (hey, I only paid 16.5K in July '04), I got the new one for $3,500 off MSRP (inc. soem accessories at cost).

The trade difference ended up being $7,100 IIRC, so I don't think I did too bad.

Reposting is a good thing ........... good description - tanks.

Philly kinda coughed the game up to the Redskins ...

Anywaaaaaaay ... we have a 03 Audi Allroad 2.7 Quattro ... the miles are almost low, good color combo for the area, we got the slider thing, blinders, Bozo sound and a little CPO action ...... if you haven't used it in any drive-by shootings, you haven't bounced it off every curb between Philly and Pittsburg, no visits to Maaco, no $2.00 car washes and the interior doesn't look like the dumpster at the Popeyes Chicken place down the street ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $19's low/mid $20's, might "maybe" get real lucky and get a dealer to wander towards the $21 figure, big maybe .......

Retail Rd.? .. super detail from the detail gods, finish any service, a big fat daddy ad in all the big papers and $25,900 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $24,5/$25,5 ....... the CPO and the lower miles save this one ... by the way, the "books" will make ya go blind on these ..l.o.l....

Good luck and let me know ......

.... I appreciate the update .... all in all you did pretty good .. it's funny you mentioned Kbb, I just checked them for the Audi Allroad below your post and they are waaaaaaay off by about $5 grand, I have no idea were some of the sites get their figures ..

Maybe it's kinda like Vegas ~ "what goes on in Vegas, stays in Vegas.??" --- enjoy the new wheels ....

    Hello, there!

I personally would consider a Ford Focus. They have a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and usually have hefty rebates. If you find a leftover '05, you'd really get a sweet deal. The Focus is a nice car that has good reliability, compared to its intro model. The Focus is also a tighter, sportier compact and carries over 30MPG on the highway.

Or, I would even consider an '05 Ford Taurus. I see them and 2006 Taurus for 14-15K brand new that come with CD player, power windows/locks, ABS, and they have the 3.0 V6 which is proven long-lasting and bulletproof (my '92 Aerostar had 250K on it and ran). The Taurus also has EXCELLENT crash test ratings and very solid structure that doesn't ding easily. The Taurus is also a "RECOMMENDED" vehicle by Consumer Reports. I personally have a 2001 with 94,000 miles on it and love it! I get 30MPG on the interstate driving 70+ MPH.

Another thing to consider is that since the Taurus is being discontinued, it will have large discounts and it being a last-year model design, any kinks or bugs would be worked out.

    GOOD LUCK!
    - Alex

P.S. If you get a Taurus, I recommend high-quality tires, brakes, and a tranny flush every 30,000 miles - really, this should be a standard for ANY vehicle bought.

..... Thanks for the update .... nothing bad here, you paid $21ish for new Accord EX, nice car .... you could be paying $10,000 for a 99 Jeep Laredo Limited with a Kazillion miles with no fancy watch and paying $300 a day to play golf, a cheap hotel and no biscuits and gravy for breakfast ...l.o.l.....

Hey Deke, you may want to get expert advice from Terry but I wanted to tell you the story about my Dad's car.

Last December, I picked out a brand new year end 2004 Grand Marquis GS.. (Spruce green, tan clothe seats, big V8, power drivers seat, power locks, key pad entry, corning lights, rear defroster, am/fm/cd, wheel covers, dual front airbags, just the usual GS standard equipment.

We paid $18,800 for a brand new Mercury with 425 miles. With tax and flees, it was $20,300 out the door. So, for just a little more, you might just find a brand spanking new left over 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis GS. It will have a full warranty.. and all that good stuff.

    Good luck. Mark :)

    Thanks for the response Terry....

As far as the car goes, it looks like we'll be holding onto it for a bit longer. Had a few people test drive it, and said they would absolutely not buy it with the sounds it was making, despite the fact the dealer couldn't find anything...oh well.

As far as the Eagles go...well...lets not talk about that...it depresses me.

    Thanks again.

you can buy a new "06" SES loaded-up to the max for the low $17's with Zero miles .....

I was wondering what type of car are you talking about? I haven't heard of that style on the stang... didn't know if there's something new I missed. Especially with you noting the low $17s for a loaded out w/0miles price! YeaY :shades: haha

Terry! I have found a 2004 Honda Accord EX - V6 Auto with 17k miles being offered for $13,995. From the pictures it looks like it's in excellent condition.

Is this the right price for this vehicle or is there something terribly wrong with it that the dealer might be hiding?

What would be the right price for this vehicle? What price should I offer if I did find a car similar to this?

2-door? 4-door? Either way, it sounds too cheap to have a clean history.

Hard to tell if it's been smashed by looking at pictures, in person, it's a little easier.
  • thegraduatethegraduate Member Posts: 9,731
I would be concerned about this car; at the very least do a carfax check and go take it to a mechanic to be worked over for crash issues, leaks, problems, et.al.

Kelley Blue Book quotes this exact configuration of car at $22,970. This assumes excellent condition and my zip code (birmingham, al). Be cautious!! Good Luck! May I reccomend the EX 4-cyl? I have a 2006 with 2200 miles now. I love it, get 31mpg, and have lots of power and features, plus, it was new, and listed less than bluebook of the 04 V6 you are shopping for.

    04 Honda Accord EX V6 Auto with 17,000 miles for: $13,999 .....? .. here's some possibilities:

    Just a quick update...

It's been almost 2 months. I did exactly as you said, but I had no responses at the $12,900. I only started getting responses when I lowered it to $11,900 and those responses were all in the "why are you charging so much?" vein. With no one willing to pay that, I've now lowered the price to $10,800 and I'm still getting lots of responses from people who say I'm asking too much because I'm over Blue Book. I'm getting lots of offers for $10k and under, but I haven't bitten yet. I'm getting a little antsy though and may have to go low if I can't sell in the next few weeks.

So I do appreciate your help, but you were way off this time. :)
  • 28firefighter28firefighter Member Posts: 9,818
I was asking 23,900 just by word of mouth to some friends who spread the word.

We're working on it, I have it scheduled to go to another audi dealer an hour-ish away from me, so we'll see.

    Here's another one-

    2001 Mitsubishi Galant
    4dr saloon
    2.0 litre 4-cylinder manual tranny
    35K on it
Green exterior with light grey interior
Base model (not a single option)
A few scratches here and there
    Tires are close to new

Is it a good car? - (Actually, I am not buying it for myself, It's for someone else)
    What price should I expect?
  • kk2482kk2482 Member Posts: 33
I read the old post you are responding from to figure out what type of car you are selling. I live in the central Texas area (which is cheaper cost of living than where you are located) and there are used 2000 CRVs with 75k to 95k miles being sold for $9,5k(abused) & $11,5k(well cared) avg in the local region newspaper and these are private sales. I think Terry's right with his number. He of all people would know. The people responding to your add are just manipulating you to see if the price would lower. That happened to an old friend of mine that was selling his '03 Honda Pilot 34,000 miles @ 21,000. Everyone gave him the why such a steep price - and someone purchased it from him for about $500 under his asking price - about three months later.

You may be in a time crunch, and if so your best bet money wise is to take it to a nearby CarMax - see what they'll offer - give it another week and if not offers are better, then sale it to CarMax! If you have time, repost it in the paper ... I wish you the best of luck. I am posting my 02 Mazda in the paper so I know the feeling.
  • kk2482kk2482 Member Posts: 33
Terry. I was able to locate the following offer here in the central Texas area. The carfax is clean, and the car looks like its in good condition. Please tell me what price would be right for this? The owner noted the following.

2004 Honda Accord LX @ $15,500 or best offer
    2.4L 4 Cylinder
    5spd manual transmission
    Clean Condition
    Power Windows, Mirrors, & Locks
    4 Wheel ABS Brakes
Front & Side airbags for driver/passenger
(this is an upgrade option not standard on LX models)
    Alloy custom wheels
    Spoiler
    Tinted windows - professionally done
Color: Graphite Pearl (Grey) & Grey cloth interior

I'm going to have a friend of the family thats a mechanic take a look at it further. THANKS TERRY! :D

Streetster... since you are bringing up the Jeep again... what are all the particulars on the one that you were looking at? You said it has a V6 but you didn't say much else... does it have..., 4x4 ? , sunroof ? leather? heated seats ?

The miles just seemed really high for a $10,000 asking price.

I ran the Jeep that you are looking at and these are the numbers that I came up with since you didn't list many options.

    Trade in = $4517

    Private party = $6176

    Dealer Retail = $7902

Run the numbers yourself and see what you come up with.. remember to "check" all the options so your number will be more accurate.

Looks like Terry hit this one on the nose!

.... **So I do appreciate your help, but you were way off this time....**

Can't help ya there ... a lot has to do with "presentation" - and maybe, just maybe, your presentation just isn't working ..... I just sold a 65k *99* 4WD LX to one of your golf Pro's that live in Durham for $10,900 ........... but anyway, lets hope Ohio State can beat the Irish.

Thanks for your input. The 03 LS was sold, but got an e-mail from the Internet sales guy on the 04...price lowered to 15800.... Locally-owned grandpa car, but I really wanted one with traction control. Guess I'll keep looking, but it was sweet.... Still, 15.... Hope to get maybe 4 for my Olds with 52K on it now.

Off-lease Grand Marquis are a dime a dozen at the Mercury dealer, but they want over 17 for 03-04s!

You stated a while back that you're in San Luis Obispo, CA, right (or near)?

Personally, in the price range you're looking at (seems like $5-7k), I'd be looking at something a bit newer and a bit less fancy. I'm also a bit leary of sellers claiming 60-80k miles on fifteen year-old cars. That's HIGHLY unusual. In any case, low miles isn't any guarantee that nothing will go wrong, and on something like a '90 Lexus LS, whatever does go wrong isn't likely to be cheap. In other words, if you need reliable, inexpensive *transportation*, maybe something like a $6k '02 Ford Taurus w/80k might be a better idea than a $6k '94 Legend with 80k. Yes, Lexus and Acuras look nice in the driveway and sound nice off the tongue, but in this case, might not be the wisest choise. YMMV, just my opinion.

    Terry,

Looking to trade this 1999 Honday Odyssey EX in on something new (not another Honda).

    Location: Phoenix/Mesa/Scottsdale, Arizona
    Model: 1999 Honda Odyssey EX
Engine: 6 cylinder 3.0 liter Automatic
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 90,000
Color: Mesa Beige (will Honda ever run out of this color?)
Interior Color: Beige/Taupe Cloth (no leather option in 99)
Major Options: All standard equipment that came with the EX model (nothing additional added except aftermarket tint on the front windows). EX model included power doors, traction control system, color-coded mirrors/doors, etc.
Condition: Good. Typical minivan usage (yes, Cheerios are evident) but not abused. Dealer maintained. Small ding (half dollar size) in rear lifgate (probably can be fixed by Dent-Pro). No accidents.

Tires - Probably <50% on a a set of Gppdyear Regatta II's (never liked these shoes).
Brakes- Good condition but coming up for replacement soon.
Other - Needs 90,000 mile service done as "Maintenance Required" light is on.

Hope this is the info needed.

    Thanks.

The only thing I'd add to that is that there are some people (like me) who actually do put extremely low miles on cars, for various reasons. But I'd look to see if there are service & carfax records that match with the miles.

A buddy of mine has a '90 Mercedes 500SL that he bought new and the odometer just turned 50,000 miles.... car looks fantastic (silver with black leather).

Now I think it might be worth $8,000... if it's like, super freaking nice.

    Location: Raleigh, NC
    Year/Make/Model: '99 Honda CR-V EX
    Body Style: 4dr
    Engine: 1.9l (I believe), 5 spd *manual*
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: 99,500
    Color: Green, blue cloth interior
    Major Options: Standard EX stuff
Condition: Fair to good. Small ding on hood, paint looks good. Wheels are flaking (see it all of the time on these). Interior is avg for age, not hovered in, but not filthy.
Tires: ~5000 mi on brand new Mich Pilots
Brakes: Just serviced, new pads and rotors
Maintenance: Oil every 5k, 90K service (timing belt, water pump, etc.) done.
Other: This is where it gets ugly . Rearended another vehicle at ~40mph, no frame or engine damage, replaced front fenders, hood, grill, etc. Repair looks near perfect to my eyes (got it done at same place that does BMW/Lexus work), everything lines up really well.

Looking to trade for an '06 CRV...wife really likes 'em! No payoff...

Update: Pulled the trigger yesterday on '06 CRV SE (automatic, of course). Carmax offered $4000 (couldn't tell it had been in an accident, but I told them...they would have offered $5500 without that info). Dealer offered $4500 and invoice + $398 doc fee + tag/taxes on '06. I think I got a good deal, what say you?

    Terry,

I very much appreciate the reply. We pulled out on purchasing the car for financial reasons. Basically we have no current car payment and are trying to start a family and concluded this is the best time to try and save/pay down debt etc. I was going to offer $26,000 and not budge, if the dealer said no we would have walked.

Again, I do appreciate the response and did not intend to waste anyones time.

I think you are crazy! :P

Why do you keep hyperlinking that Jeep calculation page? You know the options, just punch them in and get the figure yourself! How many posts have gone by and you didn't correct the mileage? Geesh!

.... Bud.! ... have you been sittin' a little too close to the Jim Beam.??

    Here's your orginal post:

It is a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Limited trim)
4.0 litre V6 coupled with an auto transmission
    >>It's got 164K on it
    >>>The exterior color is navy blue with a Dark Grey/Black interior
Not many major options except the wood trim which i guess comes standard

    ========================

Even with the low miles it ain't worth $10 grand ...

    It's a 8 year old truck, not a 8 year old Piaget ...

If the Pope was the previous owner, it's still not worth $10,000 grand ...

If it was involved with "Encounters of the Third kind", it's not worth $10 grand ...

You seem to love it ... give the man the $10 grand and go away .. gheeez.!

At 164K its retail ASKING number is $4900, at 90K its retail ASKING number is around $7900, maybe might see a dealer ask $9900 but they would include a warranty with the purchase and let it go for around $7500-$8000. No way it is worth $10,000.

It is still a 7 year old almost 100K mile out of warranty domestic SUV.

Thanks, Mark. Don't know if the local Mercury shop would go so low on a leftover. This IS the land of the blue-hair and Grand Marquis, Crown Vics and Buick Centurys are a dime a dozen, but command some big bucks.

I'm not in a hurry, just having that seven year itch since Friday will be that anniversary of my relationship with my Intrigue....Wife thinks I'm crazy and she humors me.

I believe the Limited has leather seats standard. I think you're looking at a Laredo, which would be valued less. The Laredo also has black plastic cladding and door handles (they're painted on the Limited)--this would be an easy way to tell.
