i believe she kept up with the maintenance so everything should be all set. she's looking to sell private party so she can downgrade to a car she can just pay cash for and not have payments. im posting this as a service to her!
thanks terry!
Thanks, Terry. I'll let you know how it turns out, but I don't think we'll see $11.5K for this. My wife, a soft-hearted sort, has already told her cousin that we're looking for $11 but we'll take less. When the dust settles, I think we'll end up with $10.5K.

What will they likely offer me??
I just traded in a Silver 2003 VW Passat GLX 4motion Passat with 35,500 miles. Dealer gave me $15k. Thought it was fair so I took it. Any thoughts?
Bought an 03 BMW 745 Li with 21,800 miles from the dealer. Clean carfax history. Was a leased vehicle prior to my purchase. Options on the car were:
* Convenience Package
* Luxury Seating Package
* Premium Sound Package
* Tire pressure monitor
* 19" wheels w/performance tires
* Park Distance Control
Color is Sterling Gray with black leather. Car has an additional 2 yr, 50k mile warranty as well.
Paid $45,600 (not including taxes and fees). Car is in very good condition except the drivers seat has a few blemishes in the leather. No idea how to make the seats appearance appear newer. Did I do ok?
I live in the Chicagoland area.
Thanks.

Was that the difference figure, or the price of the BMW.
That was the actual selling price of the vehicle. I owed $15k on my Passat and the dealer paid off that balance. Now I have this new $45,600 balance.
The dealer did mention a trade difference - but i didnt know what he was talking abt (can you elaborate) so we didnt go that route.
I originally wanted to buy the car from a BMW dealer so I could get the 3.9% for 5 years - but I had a tough time finding one in the color combo, options, and miles (for my tastes) with the dealers in my area. The lowest I could find was through my credit union since I didnt go with the BMW dealer. I got 5.25% for 5 years.
Thanks.
the vehicle cost me $9,400 from the insurance company
$1000 in parts/windows
$656 for registration/inspection/plates
$3800 for bodywork/labor/paint
total cost was just about $14,900 and about 6 months of wait time , how do i turn this around into a small profit .instaed of the worst investment of the year award, i might have made the car sound way worst then it was in the last post. keep in mind that it is the z71,auto ride ,leather ,4x4, 5.3 flex, 3 rows , onstar, lt, 95k,tow package oh and i forgot about the sunroof, heated/memory seat, 2004 in year.
if i did my home work right it should be booking private party in fair condition for about 18k-19k
im not trying to force it but i just dont want to loose 3-4k and 6 months of waste

I hit a deer last fall, but it was repaired properly. Did not even knock the deer down, but did <$1500 in damage to driver's side front fender, headlight assembly, and the door had to be repainted, but not replaced.
Well maintained, tires 50%, front brakes 50%, rear brakes are new, alternator is new, plugs and wires just replaced.
It cleans up nice for its age.
Private party fair conditon? And a salvage title? Salvage title throws all the books out the window.
Come on man, it's been in a serious accident. It's got 95K miles and Chevy's aren't known for reliability.
Me thinks you made a baaaaaad investment.
...lights are stuck because i guess dat it stays on...
The check engine light does not just stay on. There is a specific code stored inside the car's computer that will provide more information about what is causing the light to come on, and which parts might need to be replaced to fix it.
Edmunds has it booking private party in rough condition at $17-ish. Rough would include the check engine light, and some scratches, dents, and dings, but not a salvage title, which would be another deduction.
It has a zillion miles, the dashboard is lit up like a Christmas tree, and it's got a salvage title. Where's the good news?
--- or his insurance policy.
==============================
>>>.. ** im considering selling it at a local auction
where i believe it will fetch 10% lower than the blue book in fair condition..**
$15,900....?? ... does that include the Baume Mercier.?
... and I believe I can hit my new driver 325 yards .. (but when they measured my last 15 drives, I only averaged 245 yards) --- so much for what I believe in ..l.o.l...
Like Mathias has mentioned, this ain't no beauty ..... it's got a TON of miles, it's had a major meteorite hit, it lights up like a Christmas tree, it sounds like it's been put back together by Helen Keller, and let's not forget ~ it has a salvage title .... other than that, it's puuuurfect.!
I have no idea what auction you might be going to, but at $15,9 I need to send some stuff there ..l.o.l... .. but any of the ones I've been to, you'd be staring down the barrel of the $8/$9,0 zipcode (depending on where you live and the V8) ...
You might want to spend some $$ and put this dude back together - properly ..l.o.l.. .... then send it down Retail Rd with a full disclosure, a fat daddy detail, a wonderful picture gallery, a superb Ad, all the history on the front seat and bring the price back down to Earth, like $10,900 *asking* and go from there .....
Terry. :sick:
good looking vehicle, an expert would not be able to tell that it was a salvage from just looking , i really dont know why the insurance salvaged it , it wasnt that much to repair just around $5,500 oh and 6 months hassle
im just thinking that this vehicle is hard to sell without a salvage title and now with it makes it next to impossible . those 95,000 miles have to be all highway i got it back in january the beginning of 2006 so 2 years for 95000 mile why thats 47500 per year which as we all know is just under 4000 per month these people must have been going coast to coast every month thanks for the post htey really been helping please keep sending them in

Brakes are in good condition. Almost all miles are on highway

Better yet, park it on the bad side of town and leave the keys in it...

**However, was in accident (front end) over 2 years ago (approx $6K damage). Airbags never deployed. I can't tell that it has been repaired, but I'm not a professional. Carfax shows NO accidents, however.
NADA says $14,000 trade, Edmunds says $10,900, KBB says $8500. Both dealers I have been to offer $8500. Is that really all there is? I can't help feeling I should get more.
Thanks for your help..**

"Let's just say..." .. it's BA (before accident) ... it's probably worth in and around the low/mid $10's (if it's super duper cleeeean) ... add that minor itty bitty tiny (small) can't even see it $6,000 baby kiss, and you're lookin' at the $7/$8 region .....
I know in your eye's you feel no one can see the damage ...... but I have a stupid feelin' that the dealers saw that repair from a block away .. and that in turn, brought out the UC guy with his $900 Elco and I'm sure that dial lit-up like Rudolphs nose on Christmas Eve ......
$8,500 seems like a lot of $$ for a vehicle that had more damage than Joe Lewis ........

Sounds like you did good .... but I have a funny feelin' there might be a little "overallowance" in that $10,000 ..... no matter, anything over $8,5 is a gift from heaven ... the good news: it's gone and your drivin' your new IS (nice cars) so enjoy ....

West Michaginner.? ... you should be right down the street from Mathias ..
The color(s) are good for the area, the miles are low, we got that Bozo sound thing, we got the hole in the roof, we got the 4 wheels a spinnin', we got the moo cow seats, we got the new stopper program, the round things need to be replaced and we got us a little board action ... sounds nice.
.... no Maaco, no K-mart collisions, no I drove through my neighbors Koi Pond....? .... if so, then trade side in and around the low/mid $11's, might maybe see the tall $11's low low low $12's because of the area ....
No dealers are puttin' big $$ into 4wd's this time of the year and Yota dealers aren't known for their "generosity" ... so let me know on this one.

Tanks for the update .....
hey, those accessories ain't free, he probably got em' for another $300/$400 just to make it "purty" .....
Nice vehicle .... enjoy.!
Accessories aren't free??!! I thought all you have to do is ask and they toss 'em in for nothin' and the magic accessory fairy installs them!! Personally, I would've done the accessories myself and saved a few bucks but Dad doesn't do manual labor anymore. He spent an extra $5-600 with installation for the accessories.
It's a perfect car for the folks. Economical, safe, easy to get in and out, fits the grand kids...
Thanks again for your help.
25K miles, black/tan, Premium pack (S/R, leather, wood, etc.), CD changer, auto, 2 owner, all records from new, no accidents, clean carfax. As good a condition as you'd expect from a N/S, no-kids owner. Orig. tires, about 50%, but I have another unused set I could put on or include.
What do you think, trade in (probably for a Toyota/Honda/Subaru), or selling it myself? I'm thinking, a wagon, super-low miles, somebody might pay quite a bit more than a dealer? (I could put it on Fee-bay, or local ad).

Purchased it 6 months ago.
Performed 1st 7500 mile service at dealer. Next 3 services are free. I purchased it new for 75000. Looking to get 68000. Is that fair for a trade? Thanks
But when you have soemthing worth thousands of dollars, its good protection to have.
This is not very honorable, but in practice, a lot of people will start the auction at a low price with no reserve, then cancel the auction if it gets close to closing time and the car is not bid up to a price they're happy with. It's shady, and I'm not sure if eBay has changed their policies to discourage it since the last time I checked.
We have found that starting the auction off low generates more interest than starting with a high opening bid price.
Obviously, you have to be realistic with your reserve.
It is very hard to put a number on what is current model year vehicle with 10,000 miles. Looking at what they pay Land Rover for a brand new car with no miles and then looking at your car they have to pay you less for your car because it has miles.
The key is how much less? They can't pay you 68,000 dollars for your car cause that is what a brand new one costs them. They would probably be asking about 68,000 to 69,000 for your car as a used vehicle.
this is the vehicle
i actually purchase this from an insurance company however all of the repairs were made by a good shop and it looks and drives new the the lights are stuck because i guess dat it stays on , i had 2 reset the oil change , brand ne w tune up for the service engine, and it has coolant has absolutely no mechanical or body/frame problems i would actually encourage potential buyers to have it checked by a mechanic/frame shop,. now lets talk prices,
the vehicle cost me $9,400 from the insurance company
$1000 in parts/windows
$656 for registration/inspection/plates
$3800 for bodywork/labor/paint

salvage
It creates a veritable feeding frenzy, and it shows people that many others are interested as well, thus creating a real perception of value.
I've done this with a motorcycle which sold for $1,150 or so, and it worked very well with the $1 start.
It does take a certain amount of nerve, to be sure. And you can't yank it, either, that's sissy...
I did start a canoe at $300, just 'cuz I didn't know the market. Cars are fairly predictable, though.

Bingo...!!
Bud, let me tell you what you've got here ....
First of all, it's a miled-up 4 year old 4x4 in the heat of summer with a "blast from the past" with probably some frame damage, paint and repairs that can be seen by any pro and certainly it will light up an Elco like the 4th of July -- so cut your buying market by 40% ...
Whether you run this thru ebay or a Manheim auction it has to be declared as a "salvage" vehicle .. or, you'll be suckin' the tailpipe back in 2 or 3 days and be refunding some monies .... so cut your buying market by 50% ...
That's going to leave with "maybe" 10% of a buying market --- and 90% of those will be lookin' for financing and most lenders won't finance salvage titles ... so ebay will expand the potential buyers, but not the percentages ~~ (ding ding, light goin' on yet..?)
Use a cheap "buy it now" figure as mentioned, start it at $1.00 and let it roll ...... reserve's flat kill a buyers mind, put a reserve on a car at a regular auction and it looks like Lemmings to the sea .. (get it...??)
Like my great Grand Daddy used to say: .... "you can be a Lion, you can be a Tiger -- but never be a pig ..." ... (you know what happens to pigs, don't you..?) ....
This ain't no CLS55 AMG with 2,500 miles .....

well, as some others have pointed out, i'm not talking about having no protection. I'm talking about starting the price high.
The suggestion of starting at $1, with a reserve, but having a Buy It Now is not a bad compromise. As mentioned, at least the BIN gives the shoppers SOME idea of what the seller is looking for.
And, really, would starting the bidding at your minimum acceptable price chase off some bidders? Sure! But only those who wouldn't have met your reserve price anyway, had you gone that route.
we should probably move this over to the discussion about buying and selling on Ebay before the host spanks us.
