Am I in the ballpark, thinking that private party on the TSX wouldn't be much more than $20-$21k or so? Assuming that's the range, it makes it a fairly easy decision to go the trade-in route.

No, actually they were asking you to hand you the keys for $13k. Not exactly chump change for a six-year-old car... miles are low... probably a little light... do you smoke? There's nearly a grand right there if it smells bad enough...
OK, I checked... it's hard to find a match; miles are low; touring/nav are fairly rare... I found a few with the right mileage $15,400 w/ 70k miles in "above" condition. $12,600 "average" 71k in rust-free NV $11k in "below" condition 83k Milwaukee ... You might find it pays to shop.
My guess is the car is "worth", wholesale, between $13 and $14. Might have better luck when the snow starts flying.
So much for the vaunted resale values of acuras. Or maybe it's because it's a large SUV with mediocre mileage? I suppose it could be a good buy for someone who doesn't want to pay $38K for a new one.....
You could research what they're going for on e-bay also--don't forget to check "completed listings" also. Or keep the thing for another 40K miles--the worst of the depreciation is over.....
Fact is I'm buying that 2002 from private party for 17.7K. And it comes with lexus platium extended warranty to 100K so I'm buying for auction price. Sounds fair. I wanted trade in value in case I decide the car is too small (I'm replacing a 98 grand voyager, 148K miles).
I would sell it while the selling is good. The new MDX release is right around the corner and values of the old ones will go nowhere but down from there.

There is some gum stuck in the carpet in the back, there are two stains that I could not remove from the floor mats, my son put a sticker on the back seat and when I tried to remove it, the adhesive and some of the paper stuck. The plastic trim around the drivers inside door handle has come of. I still have it though. All the components work well. A/C, heater, stereo, sunroof, lights. However, my children have broken the a/c vents in the back seat. You can feel that they have been pushed into the console. Thats the major damage. The engine, brakes etc. are fine and it was in the shop last year for a tune-up. I am desperately trying to get into a 2006 Mazda 3 and Im only being offered $7000 for the Buick as a trade. I owe $15,300 on it!!! I am going to pay the neg. equity one way or the other, but I just have to get the best deal for the Buick, and fast! Like yesterday! What is your payment on the $15,300 loan? And, what would you like your payment to be on a Mazda3?
With at least $6,000 in negative equity, buying an 06 Mazda3 will not lower your payments. They probably would be more, and remember you and the kids would be in a much smaller car.
If you really, really drive long distances, and really, really need a small, reliable car, get together a few thousand dollars to offset the negative equity and then look for a used Mazda Protege with 40-50K miles for about $10K. Talk them down on price, put the money down, finance $13K and drive the Mazda until your loan is paid off.
And I'll agree with the suggestion on the Protege5. Maybe it's just that the ones I see in the area tend to be kept up, but I like the looks of them even more than the Mazda3.

Well, assuming that it is a 3.0L I think you are probably $3k too high. Cars like yours are going through the auctions for $25-26,000. Also, I don't know what part of the country you are in.
If you have it advertised and you are getting calls then you should be ok, if not then you know you are too high.

Hi there, I have been looking for a 05' Camry XLE and notice that the prices are all over the place, from $18,000 to $23,000 for basically the same XLE's..ie. 3 ltr V6, leather, 30 to 60K for mileage. They are pretty free and far between anyway in the XLE series, but that $5,000 difference figure floating up and down from car to car is confusing. I don't want an "LE" and that puts me in a take it or leave it situation on the XLE prices...anyone have any thoughts on this?
Yeah I do. Do yourself a favor and buy a new one. Either get a great price on an '06 -- preferred option if you drive a lot of miles -- or get a good price on an '07 when they come out.
Not the 'thoughts' I was looking for but thanks for the input anyway. I love the style and options of the 05 and 06's and really can't stand the new 07's (they look like they need a nose job) And with Toyotas style change system they will probably all look like this for the next 5 years. I have read that about 95% of all Camrys have been LE's so perhaps that's why the XLE's owners are so hard to deal with? They seem to be getting worth more each month!

It sounds like you've really boxed yourself in to "having to have" a used XLE. It's just a Camry. If you pay a big price to get a used XLE (way more than an LE, or nearly as much as a new '07), that sounds nuts to me.....
It's not like a Porsche, where people go crazy getting the exact model variation they want; It's just a Camry. I'd say, get used to the '07's......
OK then, everybody thinks I am 'nuts' to keep searching for a pricy, 2005 Camry XLE. The closest alternative (in my mind) is a 2003 Toyota Avalon XLS There are some low miles, loaded Avalons out there for less than the Camry XLE. The 03' Avalon doesn't have the rear window shade or steering wheel audio controls like the 05 Camrys , but I guess you can't win-em-all. Anybody want to share anything they know about a real world deal on the 03 XLS Avalon with about 30K on it?
If you listed some specific cars you're considering (actual used vehicles FS, not just model names & years) with their mileage & prices, 4 or 6 cyl, options, etc. some people here could give you informed opinions on what they're worth (it's hard to know what you mean by "pricey"). Also:
--Try using the Edmunds Price Guide to "appraise" used cars you're considering. A lot of people complain about how inaccurate it can be, but it's a whole lot better than nothing. And I wouldn't pay Edmunds "retail" unless the car is gold plated or something. Wholesale or trade-in would be a better price to shoot for esp. if buying from an individual. You also need to get out there & make offers, after you learn the wholesale prices, & not be cowed by a lot of high "asking prices".
--start checking prices on e-bay. You might even find a car that way.
--Have you checked out the '07 camrys thoroughly? I know with bmw's, a lot of bmw fanantics "hate" the looks of the new version of a series for a couple of years, then most accept or like it (with a couple of recent exceptions).
--Buying used usually takes a lot more knowledge & work to get a good deal than just ordering a new vehicle over the internet.......
Hi Woody, Look like it's just you and me on this Toyota question. I took your advice and checked out the Avalons on eBay and the 03's on the "Buy It Now" run from $18,500 to $19,900. The Avalon XLS's all have pretty much the same features with few option add ons, so about the only variables are the miles and the color. On the 05' Camry question, there are none on eBay and haven't been for weeks now. In searching the other internet sites, they are running about 1 XLE to 100 LE's the low mile XLE's are in the low $20's..i.e not much less than new retail at the time. I would say that is "pricy".
There are also a lot of nice Acura TL's out there right now for thousands less, but they require Premium Fuel and come ecquiped with Hondas failure prone transmissions. (I have the same a/t in my 2003 Honda Odyssey that has been recalled for a patch up fix)
(If Terry were still here, he could answer all this stuff instantly).
According to CR, the trans. problems on the TL ended after 2003. There are people on the CCBA forum who buy & sell used acuras & hondas all the time who would know more.........(than me). Personally, I'd vote for a used TL over a camry anyday, provided it's a MY post-trans. problems.....
I'm looking at buying a 99 Subaru Forester S. I've never owned a Subaru before, so I'm not overly familiar with the values other then what is given by Edmunds, KBB etc.. The car is:

have you tried autotrader.com? Your profile indicates that you're from Canada--I'm wondering if the model configurations are a bit different there; at least in Chicago, there are plenty of '05 XLEs around, though the asking prices are a bit silly, IMO (as high as $24-something). Do you want a 4-cylinder or V6?
