Prob a car you should sell yourself.
    Only @ $8000 from a dealer.
    Prob $10-12000 easy private party.
The color is a drawback, but the miles are great.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Max, how much is the color a drawback, dollarwise? When running numbers using Edmunds, color (any color) never varies the value by much at all - are their figures disconnected from reality?
  • fformula88fformula88 Member Posts: 30
Hello. I was hoping you could help me out on the real world trade on this, since I have gotten a couple quotes from dealers and was really disappointed in what they offered. I am not sure if they are low-balling me, or if I have just over estimated the value.

Suggested Information for posting trade-in values:
    Location: Buffalo, NY
Year/Make/Model: 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX Limited
    Body Style: 4 door
Engine: 4 cyl turbo, 5 speed manual
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: 7600
Color: Grey Metallic exterior, grey interior
Major Options: Leather, heated seats, sunroof, climate control, cruise, 6 disc CD, spoiler, 17" rims (factory)
    Condition:
Interior and exterior are mint. No scratches, blemishes, dents, etc
Tires - 7500 miles on tires
    Brakes
Maintenance: All scheduled maintenance done by dealer, receipts available
Other: No other prior problems, no accidents, etc.

The online calculators have given me trade in values from between 23,000 and 24,000. However, the dealers I have spoken to only want to offer between 18,500 and 20,000. I know the online sites aren't always totally accurate, but that seems to be a big discrepancy. I know a few things work against me too. First year depreciation is big, and Subaru released a new body style.

    Thanks for your help!

    Good evening,
can anyone pinpoint trade in values on the two cars below:

    2004 Cadillac CTS-V
    43,000 miles
    black on black
no runs, hits, etc... good condition. new tires

    2005 Infiniti G35
    41,000 miles
    black on black
    automatic
    leather, moonroof, NO premium package.
no runs, hits, etc. again, good condition. new tires

    in Tennessee.
    thanks.

I think it is a given that Edmunds numbers are disconnected from reality. :P

However, some colors, like dark green, are pretty much sale proof these days.
If the car was white or beige, it would be far easier to sell.
the dollar amount is open to debate.
Soemtimes its a few hundred, sometimes its over a thousand.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Avg on Manheim is about $20,000.
Now, those were factory cars, probably sold on MSO's.

So, the range you are being quoted isn't unreasonable.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Not much to go on for the Caddy.
    Figure $20-23,000 trade in

    G35 between $18-19,000
  • fformula88fformula88 Member Posts: 30
Thanks for checking on it! Thats a bit disappointing, but it is what it is I guess.

I was doing some searches on auto trader, and the retail asking prices seem to be less than the online calculators too, which would reflect the lower $20K auction pricing.

Definitely not what I wanted to hear, but that's how it goes. Thanks a bunch!
  • butchbr73butchbr73 Member Posts: 325
    thanks Volvomax... appreciate your help.

sorry about the info on the CTS-V... its a clean car... they came in one flavor, fully loaded so all the options are present (nav, bose, etc...). has new tires, up to date on maintenance, etc.. no hits, damage, accident's, etc.. The V is rear wheel and has the 5.7L v-8 w/ 6 speed manual. based upon your response, I'll take it should be toward the upper-end of your range.

    thanks on the G35.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Fitzmall has left over 07 WRX Limiteds in the $25s, so when you consider that the residual on yours isn't so bad.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Thanks, Max. I had a green Pathfinder under consideration that was on ebay but, as it turned out, the owner was disconnected from reality ($12,000 reserve on an '01 LE 4wd with 65K).
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Since the CTS-V is a specialty car, it can be hard to figure.
    And sometimes hard to sell.
Which is why the range is that big.
It is one of the best values out there as far as bang for the buck.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
$12k retail is a little much.
$10k should kill that car dead.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Yeah, especially since this was a private owner and the Carfax shows a rear hit (severity unspecified) which the owner, naturally, claimed only cracked the bumper cover.

It's the old thing - when folks think they have an everyday something special....

I was the high bidder at $9200 and not even close. Oh, well, there's lots of used SUVs around and they don't seem to be moving right now around here.

    Hello,
I was wondering if you ever got this question answered, and am curious as to which car you chose? I am asking because i am looking at a 97 Infiniti I30 with 127k on it and am wondering if that would be a good purchase? Thank you.

I am interested in knowing the auction values/trade-in value for my car.

    Location: San Diego, CA
    2006 BMW 325i 4dr sedan RWD
    3.0liter 6 cyl w/ 6 spd manual transmission
    Mileage is 20600
Black exterior/black interior with wood trim
The only option is the sport package (sport suspension, seats, 17" wheels) so the car is very lightly optioned. Car's original MSRP was $33,595 with destination.
The car is in perfect condition, with the exception that I will need 4 new tires by the end of the year.

    Thanks in advance!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
112k miles and a replaced windshield and it's mint? That seems a bit optimistic, no?
  • briegelbriegel Member Posts: 139
Hi Volvomax. I am interested in the trade-in and private-party values for the following:

    Location: Seattle, WA metropolitan area
    Year/Make/Model: 2005 Lexus RX 330
    Body Style: 4dr SUV
Engine: 3.3 liter, V6 cylinder, auto
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: 34,500
    Color: Savannah Mist (beige)/Ivory
Major Options: Premium Plus Package, heated seats, tow prep
    Condition:
a few small rock chips, otherwise exterior is good; interior clean and in good shape
    Tires - new @ 33,000 miles
    Brakes - original
Maintenance - owner oil & filter every 5000 miles, new air filter
Other: no prior damage/insurance claims, repaints, etc.

    Thanks!
  • nimrod99nimrod99 Member Posts: 343
the windshield is a genuine Toyota factory heated windshield $1,100
better than having a chipped windshield?
why would that detract from "mint" condition?
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
You gotta be kidding me! 110K miles and you say it is in mint condition. That's like a 90 yr old person saying they're in great physical condition. Good luck, but be ready to be sadly disappointed.
  • nimrod99nimrod99 Member Posts: 343
    Don't be an idiot
comparing people to cars is rediculous.

Have you seen my car? - NO
The vehicle IS mint condition, if you didn't look at the odometer, people ask is this a new car? Leather is immaculate, and smells like new
  • robbiegrobbieg Member Posts: 350
I think people object to your use of the word mint. It is my understanding, that very few cars are considered mint. An example would be a 2007 911 with 1500 miles. Your car may be in above average condition but not mint.

Also, there is no need for name calling.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Of course it's better than a chipped windshield, but it also means it's not original and was replaced.

The seals done by a window shop or dealer can't possibly be as good as factory.

That plus it raises eyebrows about whether any other damage occured, at least to a buyer.

My wife went through 3 on her 626 so I'm all too familiar with windshield replacement.
  • jipsterjipster Member Posts: 6,296
By definition doesn't "mint" mean significantly below average miles?
2021 Honda Passport EX-L, 2020 Honda Accord EX-L, 2011 Hyundai Veracruz, 2010 Mercury Milan Premiere.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
From dictionary.com, the relevant parts I found:

being in its original, unused condition

unused or appearing to be newly made and never used

I guess in theory a high mile car could appear to be new, but it's definitely quite a stretch, especially the "never used" part.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
I'm sorry, but you simply cannot use the word mint to describe a car with twice the miles it should have.
No matter how nice it may look,it still has twice the miles it should have.
A Highlander with average miles for that year probably trades for $15,000
Yours is prob a $10-11,000 car.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Should trade for $7-8000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Trade in should be @ $24,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Trade in should be @ $27,000
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
You're taking this too personal, no need to call people an idiot who disagree with you. That only makes you look like an idiot. I don't have to look at your vehicle, the high miles kill it. What part of that don't you understand? You made my point by saying "if you don't look at the odometer". Even with low miles, I wouldn't call a 5 year old car mint. It's still 5 years old.
  • newdavidqnewdavidq Member Posts: 146
I think Mr. Nimrod is having a little fun or English is not his first language. Rediculous? (sic)
Mint? I wonder what it would be like to try and buy this truck from him. lol.

    Hi guys:

I've not been here for ages - since the days of Bill and Terry... the good 'ol days... But I can see the good work been continued here by others... Kudos to you all for the great service you offer the rest of us.

Can I trouble you good dealers and smarter car buyers/sellers out there with a transaction I have on the table.

    Buying:
    2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid
    Magnetic Gray/ash
Nav, Leather, Moonroof, heated seats & mirror, and floor mats
    MSRP = $31.1K + TTL
    Deal = $27.9K + TTL ($30,556 OTD)
    Located in So Cal/Orange County

Trade-in: (not yet included in the TCH offer)
    2003 Toyota Matrix XR
    69K miles
    White/charcoal
Auto, air, moonroof, AM/FM/CD, Fogs, Karr security
New-ish tires (rated to 70K miles, has about 10K miles on it currently) and brakes

    Not so hot....
    a rear passenger side ding
a small rust on the hatch
a small crack in the bottom of windshield

That's it. Thinking b/w $7-8K on the trade.... I'll take care of the ding and scratch but wondering if worth it to pay for a new windshield...

What do you guys think of the trade-in and the TCH price.

    Thanks for your comments....
  • mikefm58mikefm58 Member Posts: 2,882
And my all time favorite.....drum roll please.....but they're all highway miles.....
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I wonder what it would be like to try and buy this truck from him

I think that's the bigger point here.

If I read an ad that said that I would probably skip over it, because you would automatically know the owner would want too much for it.

When was the last time you browsed For Sale ads looking for the highest priced/most perfect sample of anything?

The other thing is if it really was perfect, why not keep it? :confuse:
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
You are in the right neighborhood on the trade.
Ins should cover the windshield, if you have glass coverage.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
As if Mr. Piston knows the difference when he's going up and down on a highway vs. a city street?

Well, we all have the privilege of exercising our First Amendment Rights when describing our cars.

The BUYER will ultimately judge what is "mint", not the seller.

When I hear "mint", I think "just as it rolled out of the factory."

That means underneath, too, with no dirt, no surface rust on the tailpipes, no tire wear, no swirls in the paint, etc.

But really "mint" and "runs like new" are all acceptable hyperbole and not legal terms. It's harmless enough and an old, old, car selling tradition.

    Puff it up! :P
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You just reminded me of that CARFAX ad where the Olds Alero is flooded and the buyer says "NEW UPHOSLTERY!!!" :D
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Not what you asked, but did you see the Nov. '07 "4 seasons test" of the TCH in automobile mag? Fairly brutal (FWIW).

Hi, I enjoy reading these posts. I'm looking to get rid of my Miata for something in an automatic because I am getting arthritis in my hand which is making it hurt with all of the shifting.
I'm in the Chicago area (I know, I know, great market to get rid of a convertible in winter...lol).
Am trying to figure out what would be a good price for trading the car in, or selling it this time of year. The condition is good and just about all of the rating services are putting the trade in value at 17k +. It does have 24K on it. It does have the Grand Touring Package. I took it to carmax the other night and they quoted 13k to purchase it, yet handed me a thing for kbb showing the trade in at over 15k, and that was on a base model. What gives??? Any suggestions would be appreciated and if I hold off getting rid of it til closer to spring, what month should I be looking at getting rid of it for the best return? Thanks one and all.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,345
wait until the first nice weekend in March (well, maybe April in Chicago) when everyone has major spring fever.

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

  • oacoac Member Posts: 1,594
Thanks volvomax. I'll probably fix the windshield as well...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
CARMAX has a very simple buy low, sell high philosophy.

The timing isn't quite right for me, but I might be interested in a Miata like yours in a year or so.

The wife is next in line to get a new car, probably early Spring. So mine would have to come after that.

If I were actively shopping right now, assuming it's in good condition, let's see...

$17k - I would pass, that's just too close to a new car price
$15k - I would probably go take a look at it
$13k - I would race to your house cash in hand.

Ask for $15.9k private sale and count on getting about $15k. I'd pay about that much for it.

Too bad about the timing. Plus I'm on the east coast anyway.

    Best of luck. :shades:
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Camry Hybrid: even worse handling, & bouncier ride than a regular camry because of the extra 300 lbs. And weird throttle responses because of the 2 power sources & CVT trans. Poor passing acceleration. Thought it very useable for long highway trips tho, good seats, 500 mile fuel range.
  • traindrivertraindriver Member Posts: 328
Probably buried in this lease, but what's this thing worth??:

    2006 Jeep Commander Limited 2WD
    4.7L V8
    13,XXX miles
    South Carolina
    Black with tan leather
Typical loaded "Limited" package (sunroof, rear sensor, adjustable pedals, automatic lights, wipers, dimmers, etc)
    NO NAVI
Average condition, a few scrapes on rear bumper

    What's the trade-in -- auction values?
    Thanks
