I need to look into a private sale as I don't have any experience going down that road. Are there any links on this board that may be able to help me? Thanks everyone for your help!
Yeah I have never really been in an accident other than being rear ended. People need to pay attention when driving. I just want to look into all my options. I was told that a car dealership can use some type of lamp to detect a paint job so that's one of my concerns. As far as the DV I hired an independent appraiser who composed a report. I then submitted it to my insurance company who hired their own independent appraiser. This has been a very depressing situation for me because the car was basically new when hit ...
Looking for a trade value on this one in Denver please...
2004 Odyssey EX-RES, Auto, V6, FWD, 41K miles, Sage with gray, new tires, original brakes, all service done at dealer, body straight, interior needs good cleaning (three kids..) Thanks
Location: New Jersey Year/Make/Model: 2004 Infiniti G-35 Body Style: 2DR / Coupe Engine: 3.5L V6 DOHC 24V FI Mileage: 38000 Color: Diamond Graphite / Black (leather) Major Options: Automatic, Moon Roof, Premium package, aero kit (spoiler, ground) - No NAV Condition: Mechanically meticulous, well kept with records. Has some scuffs and a crack on the front ground effect aero pannels. Was broken into once, lock popped. Never in an accident.
Other: Would it be worth my while to have the scratches, scuffs repaired? How about the lock that was popped? Will I make that back on trade in?
Under the BEST of circumstances, the online guides are nearly useless. None of them use real world auction values, and whatever info they do use is out of date by the time they publish. Right now, new car sales are not doing well and that is spliing over into the used car area. Dealers, who aren't making any money on new cars are very hesitant to step up on used cars, that they may not be able to sell either. Used car wholesalers aren't buying as much as they used to either. If you are going to send a car to the auction,it is better to be low than high. In your case, the delaer simply didn't think he could retail your trade in, so he bid it accordingly. Extra's like leather and chrome wheels on a Camry don't mean anywhere near what they would on say, a BMW. Personally, I'd shop around and see what else you can get.
I would get the lock fixed for sure. You should be able to fix the front bumper for a couple hundred as well.
In its current condition, I'd say its worth $17,000 or so. Put back together, maybe $18-19,000.
Cosmetics really matter in lux cars. If a lux car comes in beat up, esp with things that are easily fixable, dealers worry about what else the owner didn't take car of. It just sets off alarm bells, and it hurts at trade in time.
Thanks for the reply...................dude................you were right on the money............got 2 offers for $14.5K...........................just heard back from one of the dealerships willing to increase their offer to $15.5K...............I don't think I'm going to do any better than that offer.

Hi, I am considering trading in my vehicle to CarMAx. It is a 2002 Honda S2000 with Hard top, 35 K miles, excellent condition, except for a dime sized dent in the passenger side, clean title. I am the third owner, vehicle shows one accident on Carfax from 3 years ago, which did not show at the time I purchased. I was made aware of this and seller showed me pics - Minor brush in the driver side hood, fender. KBB has it at Excellent- $17,025, Good - $16,090, Fair - $14,430. I live in NJ and I am reluctant to take the 125 mile drive to Maryland. Any thoughts would help! Cheers!! --njexpress
Thanks, Volvomax and ateixeira! That bad, Huh? I am looking to go to Rockville. This doesn't sound too encouraging. Even If I averaged at good, I was reluctantly willing to consider. The vehicle looks spanking new, with some 20 coats of zaino detail products on it... Bummer.. The vehicle has been in the market 3 weeks with no serious inquiries and it sounds like Carmax will really lowball me..
Just got back from CarMax today - people coming in non-stop to get appraised, I had a 2004 Honda Odyssey EX-L white 49K miles, very clean, no dents, slight chipped paint on front bumper, came in at $14,000 which is $2,000 lower than my dealer said he would give me on a trade-in. So, I think they are bidding low, but also looking to make a lot of profit on a car like this.
Questions: do you want to/need to sell? Or can you afford to keep it & drive it summers? It's only "worth what it's worth", & private buyers are gonna hate the accident carfax report at least as much as Carmax will...... regardless of 20 coats of zaino detail products......
Yes I need to - I will consider purchasing a family car as a replacement. It used to be my summer only car / garage queen in a three car household. My third car just got sold last month after 151K (Camry). I need a family car plus I am in a situation where I cannot afford a third car. So, yes - I need to sell it or trade it in. The nasty part is, I have had no serious inquiries at all. If it at least got to a point where a buyer wanted to find out about the accident, I could show them the pictures of the vehicle when in the body shop but, considering the time of the year, I am not getting anywhere :-( --njexpress
Like I said, you have 2 problems. 1 is the time of year 2 is the Carfax.
If Carmax hits you @ $14,000 or so, they aren't lowballing you. They are paying what the auction would say your car is worth regardless of what some site says. The sites don't buy cars. Their info is sometimes worse than useless.
Thanks again, Volvomax. I guess since I can't do anything about the carfax report, I will have to grin and bear it till spring then... What do you think?
I'm looking for a fair RETAIL selling price on the following:
California 1996 BMW 318iC convertible 1.9 L 4 cylinder 5 speed 99,000 miles black on black fully loaded nice clean car all around good records clean CARFAX
Seller wants $7,500, I think he's high, he insists no.
If an Acura dealer appraises it, say $18K, can they buy it at that amount?
Well, that depends. Sometimes appraisals are just overallowances to get you to buy a new car from that dealer. Other times, it is actual cash value. You would have to ask the Acura dealer if they had an interest in buying your car outright, even if you didn't want a new Acura.
Kelley retail is $8200, so he is certainly asking all the money. If the car was PERFECT, I'd be thinking $6000 at the most. But, its probably closer to a $5k car.
It's a nice car. He's dropped down from $8900! I see the owner's point about being rewarded for all his good care, but enough's enough.
Thanks for the numbers. I suppose premium price for premium car isn't so dumb but I think $7K sounds about tops after being here in the consultation room.
I guess since I can't do anything about the carfax report, I will have to grin and bear it till spring then...
My opinion: you say you "need to sell", so drive it to carmax, & hope they give you the $14K Volvomax has mentioned. How much more will it be worth Next Spring, with the accident, the carfax, & 6 months older by then??? (The carfax report will still be there next Spring)........
Hi, Edmunds says the invoice is 27413 plus 660 destination. Carmax, Carsdirect and actual dealer (at least one I contacted) are off by $590, at 28,659. Carsdirect goes on to say the following: What are the three prices that you show for each car? CarsDirect.com Target Price is for research purposes only. It reflects a typical, negotiated price (before taxes and other customary fees and charges, such as dealer documentation fees, tire and battery disposal fees, license and registration, and where applicable, finance charges) generally found in your area for the vehicle that you selected. The Target Price is NOT a price quote from CarsDirect.com or any other dealer. If you request a price quote from a dealer via CarsDirect.com, your price may differ.
Invoice is popularly known as the published amount that the dealer paid the manufacturer for the vehicle. This may or may not bear close relation to the dealer’s actual cost, but can be useful as a benchmark. This figure is available on many other web sites however only CarsDirect.com adds an estimate of local and regional fees from manufacturer to the dealers to this price, which makes it very close to the actual sticker invoice amount for cars at your local dealer. No other source has this level of detail. Most other sources of Invoice are not accurate.
An estimate of these manufacturer to dealers fees (such as an advertising fee) is provided for each car and is added to the Invoice to make this figure as accurate as possible. We make this estimate for most cars in most regions, there are some regions and vehicles for which we do not have estimates of these fees.
For this model, we have added $586.30 to the Invoice to represent these fees.
The local dealer quote, AND CARMAX quote, along with Cars direct quote are higher? Since when did these fees get grouped under Invoice???? Are they passing off their fees to buyer?? Please advice. Thanks. --njexpress
Most manufacturers bill their dealers for advertising on a per car basis. This charge is usually printed on the invoice. It is as real a charge as the destination fee or sunroof, or any option on the car. Because advertising costs vary from region to region there is no universal charge. Consequently, national websites and buying services don't quote it(but they DO let you know the charges exist) Toyota also may have some additional regional fees, depending on the distributorship.
The web sites and services are not meant to provide bottom dollar quotes, but only general information.
It's a nice car. He's dropped down from $8900! I see the owner's point about being rewarded for all his good care, but enough's enough.
Not only is enough enough, it's also a 4cyl BMW, and a model that sold so dismally in the US that it was discontinued.
I'm about the last guy to insist I need a six-cylinder, but the fact is that the BMW four sounds like a pepper mill in high gear, and that any BMW inline six is a wonderfully sweet engine.
So if I'm ever gonna get a Bimmer, which isn't all that likely, it's got to be a six. I fail to see the point of a 318, and I don't understand why anyone would pay a premium for one. Supposedly it handles well, but the suspension setup was from the previous generation, so it's 15-year-old technology now. About the only thing it's got going for it is the roundel... for those who are into badges...
I know that had to remove the headliners on some of them to get the noise to stop. I'd be afraid of shakes and rattles, not to mention proper fit on the headliner.
Just inspect the headliner closely and listen for the buffeting sound.
I'd just ask the OP, or anyone here, what would an equivilent year/model 3 series convert. with a 6 cyl. sell for? Maybe if you could save 20-25% by getting the 4 cyl., it could be worth it. Maybe. I did know a guy who sold his WRX for an early 90's 4 cyl. 3 series, & he really liked it, even after the WRX.
The only 4 cyl. bmw I ever drove was a new E30 318is--it was great fun to drive, & like $19K new I think?. Not the Monster that I recall the then 325is being, but priced a lot less new.....
'Course now, I'd just pay extra (if any) for a 10-20 y.o. 6 cyl. bmw vs. a 4, all things being sort of equal.....

I'm not even sure it would qualify as "good" unless you fix the dent first (that may be worthwhile).
I bet they lowball you, at or below the Fair value. Car Max has a simple buy low, sell high policy.
Are you looking at the big Car Max store in Rockville, MD? I live close to them.
Trade should be @ $15,000
you should sell it yourself.
Car w/ a bad Carfax, repainted hood fender.
Trade should be in the $14,000 neighborhood.
Carmax usually offers stupid money for trades, but this is the wrong time of year for a convertible or sports car in the East.
