FWIW -- traded my manual BMW X3 last week.

In central Jersey; 2004 loaded 2.5i model in excellent condition with 60,000 miles.

Got estimated trade-in values from various dealers, ranging from $11,000 - 16,000.

Traded for $16,000 against a 2006 Volvo S40 with 30,000 miles priced at $15,000 so I actually made $1000 on the deal (less paperwork fees of course!) I though it was a good deal for a car half the age, with half the miles, and still under manufacturer's warranty. Plus I should get about 29 MPG. I do miss the passenger and cargo room though.

Heard how horrible the SUV trade-in market is but since the dealer I traded to knew my X3 got about 24 mpg hiway (which is what I averaged) he was willing to take it. I certainly took a hit for having a manual SUV (or SAV as BMW calls it) so will think twice about doing that again.

You'll take another hit when you want to get rid of that S40. Not easy cars to sell at all.

We recently bought three or four nice X3's at a BMW auction for way back of book. Months later, we still have a couple of them.

And, these are automatics! I can't imagine the market of a stick. Must be near saleproof.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
    Mised that! Gotcha!

"THE POWERFUL V/6,BACKED WITH A[n] AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION"

It's got a lot of the hallmarks of a scam.. but the engine's wrong, the grammar's all wrong, the email is wrong, and it's labeled "dealer," which I 've never seen before....

Maybe it's just got 250k miles on it?

The scams around here -- which are less than 10% but still annoying -- are not quite this whacky... and more obviously undervalued.

Who knows. There's an old German saying: "Papier ist geduldig" -- "Paper is patient." This phrase was clearly coined before the internet!

    Sounds like an $11,000 truck.
  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
That should make the Pilot guy really happy about his resale value.
  • dodgehappydodgehappy Member Posts: 118
Well we may just be keeping that Durango then! I need to get as close to 14700 out of it as possible. I guess I will swing by Carmax to see what they offer.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
Supposing that was a $30k truck when we started, that's around 70 cents a mile. Sorta the same as traveling by taxi...

Not to rub it in or anything.

Wonder what my '85 G20 Conversion van w/ the 305 V8 and the 3sp auto will bring... it's in really nice shape with 117k, and the best mileage you'll ever see is 15 mpg.

    Depends.
If you can find the 2 people in the whole country who want it and get them in the same room with the van, you may have a bidding war on your hands. ;b

    Good Luck!
Carmax has been known to be stupid.

Hardwood floors... 1929 white oak longboards. Please.

The van, however, is VERY shagalicious: http://www.msu.edu/~steine13/conv.html
I think I've posted that link before..

It's not like I got any money in it, plus it was fun for a year. Anywhere between $999 and $2000 is the money on this one. It is a real survivor, but then it'll be hard to find someone who cares.

Take it on down to the next Spartan home football game ( I guess they already had their final green&white game) get the habachi going with a keg of Shlitz and watch the bidding war.

yet another SUV owner looking to save fuel.

    '04 Xterra SE 4wd V6 supercharged
    has moonroof but no leather
    67,500 miles

Edmunds says $11,500, but I find that VERY hard to believe. What's the reality? $9k? $8k?

Actually, Edmunds might be close on this one.
The ones that have run thru Manheim have brought stupid money.
It's probably worth $10,500 to $11,00 if its nice.

The VQ V6 was a much better engine. I remember driving even the S/C older V6 and it still wasn't that quick.

    Wow!
    I'm shocked.
    She owes $6k.

Between $999 and $2000 seems like a great deal (for the buyer), if the van is as nice as it looks, & doesn't need a lot of stuff replaced. Heck, in an area with a lot of bands & equipment to haul, I'd think they'd be all over this.

Or maybe it's just because I'm old enough to remember '70's & 80's Chevy & Ford FS vans.....& how useful & popular they were.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587

That may have been intentional. They do have the Murano for car lovers.

"Someone with an SUV and POSITIVE equity"

Well, it's bloody well FIVE years old.
There shouldn't be a loan on it at this point.

Still, it could be worse. Also, I'd much rather have $4 in cash then a $6 note plus a blown Xterra. But that's me.

  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
well, she could be 4 years into it. hell, maybe even 3 if it was a leftover.

Well I took a shot with CarMax tonight to see what they would buy it for.... $12000. We owe little over $14K on it so I am not real sure what is best to do at this point. Looking at a Honda minivan that will get us about 6-8 miles more per gallon approx. We want the room for the kids so kinda stuck not going with a sedan. Its not huge difference in mpg but I think over a year or two assuming prices stay at 4.00+ it may be worth taking the $2K of negative equity now? Just not sure what to think other then the V8 SUV market may not get any better over the next couple of years and gas prices may not look much better?
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Keep in mind, not only are you going to be out the $2,000 neg equity now, but if you're going into a new vehicle, that vehicle will be depreciating heavily for a couple years as well. Nevermind you only "owe" $14,000 for the Durango, you obviously have "paid" a lot for it the last couple years either in payments or substantial downpayments. I have an '05 Odyssey and they don't hold their value that great either, even though some folks think Honda is flawless in every way. MPG isn't terrific either, but surely better than a Durango. We get 18-19mpg in the normal schlepping and 22-23 on highway only trips.
  • dodgehappydodgehappy Member Posts: 118
Thanks for your reply sebring95. We got a nice deal on the Durango as Used about 15 months ago so luckily benefited from the original owners depreciation struggle. We do plan to lease an Odyssey or T&C this time around, assuming we can get a big closer then $2000 from our payoff. I guess time will tell
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
A T&C's mileage is NOT good, I can tell ya that much.

We test drove one and I got less than 18mpg according to the trip computer, with about 50% on the highway and using a very light foot.

Ya know, no matter how many times it happens, it never fails to aggravate me. You just can't help some (most) people.

Coworker went and traded that Xterra last night on a Prius. Took only $9k for hers. Somehow they convinced her that hers had issues (I rode in it just the other day and found it perfectly fine). I didn't even ask what she paid for the Toyota, but I know it wasn't good. Even got her to take lojack on it. Ugh!

Gee, completely off topic but your post brings up a question.

That Celica I picked up had lojack on it. Is that something yo just alert the cops to or is there some ongoing fee on it? I wouldn't buy it myself but if it's just a matter of registering it when it's already there I wouldn't suppose it could hurt anything.

Bummer on the coworker. Sounds like the proverbial baby seal.

So a seal walks into a bar and the bartender says "What'll you have?" The seal replies, "Anything but a Canadian Club on the rocks."

My 2cents: with the low miles on the Durango, just keep it & try to buy a Chrysler ext. warr., if not too expensive. Also, you didn't mention how many miles you drive per year??? And: if you have to pay $2K to get out of the Durango, how much gas can you buy for $2K......?

This board is replete now with tales of people panicking out of their SUV's, even X3's, which get fairly OK mileage, & making questionable trades, $$-wise.....

    $12,000 is a GIFT.
I'd be happy that you are only $2 grand flipped.
Your situation isn't going to get any better with that truck.
So, if you want to dump it,do it now.

    Truck's probably $18-20,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
I think that you would be happier w/ the 06.
05 had a 5 speed tranny, and it couldn't handle the full output of the engine, so the 04 and 05 R's w/ the "girltronic" tranny were de-tuned.
06 got the 6spd auto from the XC90 V8 so it could handle full power.

A decent 05 Volvo CPO car would probably sell in the low $20's.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
    thanks, v.

yeah, i really want to try to hold out for an '06. Lots of folks have been running a retuned ECU with the earlier geartronics and having no problems, though.

Either that or I'll just get a manual. So many choices.

In any case, this one is not at a volvo dealer. So what would the auction value be?
    Thanks again.

my suv is paid off, so i hope i have some equity in it. :)
it's sort of a family pet, so i won't be parting with it anytime soon.
my kid is driving it, so i am subsidizing them to the tune of $20 a week for gas.
after that, they are on their own.

I believe asking price is $21k, so it sounds like they aren't trying to make a killing.

I gotta resist going over there. :(

I got a tech question for ya. Is the auto tranny in the S40 T5 AWD the same unit? Just wondering what would happen if that engine were tweaked up to 300 ft-lbs or so.

Hello. I have a 2007 Mazda CX-7 with about 20K miles on it (Black Cherry color). It's been impeccably maintained. All is in top condition, but it could use a set of rear tires. No accident history, no insurance claims.

The car is registered in New Hampshire, but I now live in Oakland, California. I'd like to trade in the car and have some questions that I hope you all can help me with:

    1) Is it smarter to pay the CA registration + tax now (I think it's about $3500) or let the dealer pay that if I trade

    2) What is the estimated trade-in value?

    3) Is it smart/safe to sell the vehicle on the street? Any suggestions?

    Thanks.
