    This brand new car was about 20K last July. I feel bad for those who buy USED. :cry:

    Kids have been beating up Volvos for many generations. :) They handle the abuse pretty well.

    i would never buy a volvo because i would hate to see it get trashed.
    it would drive me crazy. i stress out when my kids trash up a ford! :)

    We are talking about Volvos, not Duesenbergs.
    People trash Volvos and throw them away just like they do with Fords.

    My brother-in-law bought one of these with half the miles and paid 12,000 for it. I thought he got a pretty good deal because the "asking prices" were much higher.

    These are a bit tricky because they have SO MANY standalone options and most add $$. For instance, I know the Pacifica we are about to turn back in at lease end is worth about ... IIRC ... an $11k base price for the Touring model. Add AWD, DVD, moonroof, heated seats, power seats, power liftgate, etc, and its like $14k. That's very untypical of trade-in values. You'll find most will add for major things only, like moonroof and AWD.

    Please do some research before you say something like that.
    The Taurus doesn't have one single part in common w/ the XC90.

    Ford adapted the P2 platform

    Basically, they cut all the Volvo safety bits out of it.
    No antiwhiplash seats
    No side impact protection systems(look at the IIHS side impact test)
    NO Boron Steel.

    A blueprint is just that. A design.
    Shaquille O'Neil and I are off the same blueprint.
    Obviously, we are built differently ;)
    The materials and the construction techniques make all the difference.
    If you look closely at the XC90 and the Freestyle/X as I have you can see the differences.

    Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but I always considered the basic frame and assorted bits the "platform." I will grant you that the Taurus X and Fivehundredstyle don't have the same standard safety features that the Volvo does.

    Due to a change in programs and funding, the school system where I am treasurer has to sell two low mileage Scion Xb's. None of the websites including Edmunds has a used value for 2008's. Here are the details:

    2008 Scion Xb 4 door automatic. Base options (I don't think there are many options available on these)

    #1 Blue with 6,514 miles
    #2 White with 15,941 miles

    Both are in very good condition..they were used one school year to deliver mail between school districts. I am looking for a value on these so I can sell them promptly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    My rule of thumb is you lose 10% the minute you drive off the lot, so...

    Just guessing here, but take about 15% off the one with 6k miles, and about 20% off the one with 16k miles, as compared to new.

    I think if you can get that much you did well.

    It might help that people are shopping for small cars now due to fuel prices, but the 2.4l isn't really *that* efficient. Demand for the 1.5l models may actually be stronger.

    I'm not a pro but I doubt many of these have crossed the auction block.

    if i knew i was going to end up on my roof, yeah i would want the volvo.
    the poster was driving a minivan, so either would be a step up.
    they did not mention uber safety being a priority.
    i actually saw the freestyle stability control work in a real world situation.

    Wow, I didn't realize that I'd start such a lively discussion here. It's been a busy week so we haven't had time to think about the car much. I did look at the videos and they were impressive. :surprise: My wife is a traffic engineer so safety is her primary concern ( She's read through too many accident reports for work). I think we're both leaning towards the Volvo, but needed justification for spending the additional monies. In that regard, I'm going to be cleaning out the Minivan this weekend and list it privately. The Volvo dealer offered 4k for it so anything above that will help.

    What do think for a private sale price in Northern NJ
    '02 Windstar SE
    Dark Green w/ gray cloth seats (surprisingly clean since I pur seat covers on them first thing)

    Dual Power sliding doors
    passenger side curtain airbags

    Reverse Senors

    Few scratches here and there, but I'm going to try and buff them out.
    Clean carfax ( saw it at the Volvo dealer, the last record is when we titled it 6 yrs ago)

    Thing is, they don't even share the same frames.
    If you did look at the bare chssis, you would see some substantial differences.
    Simply pit, ford can't afford to use the real XC90 chassis.
    The Taurus X would cost as much as the XC90 if they did.
    So, they watered it down.
    You can't get something for nothing.

    Well, the warranty only costs $1200.
    However, you can spend $2,000 easy reconditioning the car to meet CPO standards.

    KBB has no book value for the truck.
    A couple have gone over the block @ $29,000
    I doubt that private party would be more than a couple grand over that.

    to answer your base question, the trade-in value on that here in NJ is right around $21k. That's for a front-line-ready example. So, add a fair profit and CPO, and I personally think $24k should get it home. But of course, as Vmax said, if the dealer had to do more to get it CPO'd, then it could be stretching it.

    I didn't know the Highlander was considered a 'truck' as it is based on the Camry platform. Wasn't it touted as the first of what is now considered 'crossover' type vehicles? It certainly rides/handles like a car and gets the mpg of a car.
