There are Porsche enthusiasts who might pay more for this car if it's in decent shape. You might try advertising in the Porsche Club of America magazine, "Panorama," or find the regional chapter nearest to Minneapolis and put it in their newsletter. In July 2005, I sold my excellent condition, 56K-mile '95 968 cab (no heated seats or CD) for $20K private-party. While it went through Autotrader, I did get a large number of potential buyer inquiries by putting it on various PCA chapter sites.

2001 BMW X5 87K miles, leather, auto - what should I expect if I sell to CarMax vs. a trade in at a dealer on a new purchase? Will CarMax typically meet, beat. or be lower than a trade in...or is there a 'typical'?

    Again, its the miles.
    $7-8,000 on trade.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Assuming its a 3.0, I think it would trade somewhere @ $11-12,000
Dunno that Carmax would be real interested.
They tend to go for newer vehicles.

I suspect a private sale could bring a couple $k more, especially since it's a one-owner with all the records.

I only got it back in November, but I realize now that I need more cargo space due to my job so I am looking to move up to an Armada LE. Been looking online but there isn't any trade value figures out there for 08 Pathfinders yet...
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Based on what has gone over the block, you are probably looking at a trade in in the low 20's.
  • jskidderjskidder Member Posts: 5
I hope that was a typo and tou meant low 30's. this is a $45K truck, current model year, with 7K miles and in showroom condition.
  • sanjaysdcasanjaysdca Member Posts: 269
Max might be right on money

Brand new are going for 34K here in southern california

    link title

Add depriciation for used and SUV factor (High gas milage)
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    No, its not a typo.
The MOST that any 08 Pathfinder LE 4WD's have brought nationally has been $26,000 at the factory sale.
So, figure low $20's on a trade in.
Others w/ miles in the teens went for under $20k.
  • jskidderjskidder Member Posts: 5
Here in Chicago one optioned as mine would be going for close to $40K new, so hopefully i can get a trade at least close to $30K and and make up the difference with the rebates and similar low going price on the Armada. I'm meeting with the GM of my dealership later today to see if we can work something out so I guess I'll find out soon enough. Thanks for the input guys!

I felt like a got a good deal on the truck back in November paying invoice, but now I feel like I'm screwed.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Good Luck.
Only a friggin idiot would give you $30k cash money for that truck.
I hate to put it that way, but there it is.

I felt like a got a good deal on the truck back in November paying invoice, but now I feel like I'm screwed

You know what? Back in Nov you may very well have gotten a good deal.
However, 2 things now conspire against you.
1 the usual bath you take trading a new car in so soon after purchase
2 the fact that SUV values are plummeting.
I don't think we have seen this kind of drop in values since the last gas crunch in the 70's.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Welcome to the current truck/suv market. I did the same thing with my Tundra...bought out my lease for a "good" deal (less than real-world trade value quoted here). Lost about $4,000 since then....and this was starting with a 3 year old vehicle. I can only imagine if you were starting with a new one....

The good news is they should be just as anxious to move a new Armada....although personally I'd look at used ones!

I got real lucky in March and got $37,000. for a 2006 Cayenne traded on an Infiniti G35x, which I paid invoice for. I was expecting $33,000. or $34,000 in trade, and instead of paying, I actually got $ back. The Infiniti dealer is also a Porsche dealer, so I know that I got a good deal.

You got $37k instead of $34k. That's "only" $3k difference, less than 10%. The original poster wants $30k instead of $20k, that's 50% more.

The market for SUVs has ground to a halt recently. You can't compare a transaction from March to one now. Finally, I wouldn't compare a Cayenne's market to a Pathfinder one. You are comparing apples to oranges.

Currently, regular Cayennes are bringing $30-31k at auction.
Hope the dealer sold that car quick.
Chances are, the dealer showed you that $37 and used whatever incentive they had to do it.

If its the Luxury package 2(whatever that is) you are probably looking at between $18-20,000

    Probably somewhere $8-9,000 trade in.

A quick story. I had my LX in for an oil change a few days ago and while waiting I looked over their current inventory. They happened to have a 2008 LX 570 on their used car lot with 5,000 miles. The story was that the guy did not like the color, white, and traded it on a different one.

Thinking I might be able to get a good deal I asked the price. The salesman said that it sold new for $80,000. and that the asking price now was $85,000. I asked him if he was kidding. He said he was serious, that they were in short supply and they felt justified in asking a premium price. I wished him luck. It is still on their internet site listed at $85,000. Does this make sense?

OK guys, here's the update. Stopped by to look at numbers and the dealer offered $27K cash for my Pathfinder. I was able to work out a so-so deal (obviously not great being that I'm $10K plus in the hole on my current truck) on the Armada but held off on making the move right away on the advice of my salesman.

He seems to think that if I hold off until October that my truck will still be holding at around the same trade value and that there will likely be cash AND finance offers on the Armada at that time rather than either/or as it is now. With that in mind plust the extra few grand I will have paid down my Pathfinder I should be able to save quite a bit by holding out just a few months. I guess I'll be back again around that time.

Thanks again for all the comments, both posotive and negative. Great forum you all have here and a wonderful resource for buyers. Cheers.

Big gamble. He might be right on the incentives on the Armada. I'd be watching them like a hawk. Not too sure about the Path holding on though. SUV trade values are in free fall. Good luck.

Unless you're just stuck on Nissan, you could probably pick up a good deal on a newer used Yukon or Tahoe. Just a thought.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
When I read your post, I didn't think that could be right.
However, average auction price is $90,000!
    Looks like $85,000 is a bargain :P
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Your dealer stepped all over themselves on that Pathfinder.

While I have no doubt that there will be enhancements to the Armada offer, I'm not convinced that your car will hold its value(such as it is) until then.
This SUV thing seems to be free falling right now.
Who knows where it will end.

Eh....can we say export? I think used cars are able to be taken out of the country, while new cars have restrictions....
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Could be.
  • houdini1houdini1 Member Posts: 8,351
Thanks Max. That just blows me away.

Export? Why would this used SUV be any different from any other used SUV where most of the values are in free fall.

Because of the falling Dollar vs the Euro, exporting cars overseas has had a major effect on the auto industry recently. Now, cars imported to the US are intended for the US market and manufactuers have segmented the market for other countries/regions.

To take a vehicle out of the country, one needs a title. To get a title for a new car, it must be registered, and sales tax must be paid. Futhermore, dealerships are sanctioned if they are found selling cars to exporters. Because this car was not labeled as a 'retail sale', there will be no in-service date, and if these cars end up in dealerships for warranty work of any kind before leaving the country, the dealership is charged back. For these reasons dealerships are hesitant to sell new cars for the purpose of export. However, 'slightly' used cars, ie. current model year with only a several thousand miles, are prime candidates for export, and will sometimes bring a premium over the new car price, due to the demand, and the buying power of the Euro vs Dollar.
  • houdini1houdini1 Member Posts: 8,351
Thanks for the reply. Very interesting and I bet you are right on the money. They only plan to sell 10,000 units per year and since Lexus is only sold in the U.S. the only way other customers can obtain one is the used car market.

  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Gotta be the export market on those LX570s but they usually prefer black or silver to white. Probably depends on what country we are talking about.

Hi, would appreciate trade-in advice on the following:

    Boston area
    2003 Accord LX-V6 Coupe, 240 HP
    Automatic
    86,000 miles
    Silver exterior, black interior
    6-CD changer
Few paint dings on bumpers, one 4" scratch on roof
No dents at all, no accidents, no kids, no pets, no smoke
    Windshield replaced
Michelins MXV4-s have about 10,000 miles (6 mos. old)
Brake pads have about 40,000 miles, no squeal yet
    Maintenance by dealer/private mechanics
Passenger side power lock doesn't work, only manually (should I have this fixed before trading?)

    Thanks!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    $4-5,000 on trade.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
    Just a general question...

Have fuel prices made optional engines a deduction rather than an addition to the car's value?

My local, small-town dealer has restocked his used car lot with almost exclusively four-cylinder, compact and midsize sedans and wagons.
  • mattandimattandi Member Posts: 588
Sounds like a pretty smart move on that dealer's part.

I certainly haven't heard anything about V6's taking a hit. All the hoopla is about big V8's, especially SUV's and trucks. Good question though. I'm curious what the dealers are seeing.
