If I owe 14000 is it ok to roll the negative into a lease? I know it's not preferable but as long as I negotiate a good price on the car I will lease it should work ok correct?
My circumstances have changed and I no longer need such a large vehicle.

    thanks
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
That shouldn't be a problem, most banks/leasing companies will advance up to 120% of MSRP on a lease so burying $2,000 won't be an issue, we've done a lot more than that before.

... I'm looking at for my son:

    Louisville, KY

    1995 BMW 318ti

    Hatchback

    1.8 liter I4

    RWD

    72750 miles

    Bright Red/Gray Cloth

Automatic and alloys(apparently the only options)

    Condition:

Good paint, no dings, a few rock chips on nose. It needs @$60 worth of rubber trim/body gaskets replaced(a one hour DIY job)

Tires: Newer but crappy Goodyear all-season tires

Brakes: Beats me; they generally last @75K-100K on the E36/5. And pads/rotors are inexpensive

    Maintenance: Looking into it

    Thanks!!!

He's learning driving a manual on the Jeep and MY ti. The automatic is a concession to my wife so that she will have at least two cars that she can drive.

    Hmmm...

This kinda isn't a typical wholesale piece... if it's really nice with low miles... $4500 oughta buy it? Maybe $5k if it's real nice?

Shame about the automatic tho :'(

Exactly. I looked at it yesterday and I plan to drive it tomorrow. Like I said, the interior looked really clean; the only flaws were the stone chips and some cracks in trim rubber(door handle gaskets and the windshield wiper/cowl trim). Give me a half day and I could make it look like new.

Thats easy stuff, they all do that. Being an E36... plan on and budget for:

Lower control arms and tie rod ends, lower control arm bushings.

    New cooling system.

DON'T Buy the cheap eBay front end parts from FCP Groton, Get Lemforder.

I must be living right; my 126k mile 318ti Club Sport still has its original suspension. As for the cooling system, all I've done is R&R the thermostat and a the plastic heater hose flange coupling at the firewall. Anyway, here are some pictures:

Two more things- it needs new roundels(big deal) and the wheels are off an early E36(I have some 15X6 five spokes of a 1998 ti to fix that).
Oh yeah, the steering wheel cover is way tacky...

an automatic club sport? I had no idea. Seems contradictory to me they would build such a thing.

Not putting your car down, mind you. They made it, you bought it, and you love it. I just find it strange that BMW would actually make something with an auto trans and call it a "club sport."

    M Tech Sport Package
    Leather
    Just under 30,000 miles

At a local high end dealer, Pittsburgh, PA

My wife just may say pull the trigger on this one. I know from this board that the sport package has a very rough ride. I think the price is pretty good .... 24K. Also, they have a 2008 328xi wagon with a slush box for a grand more. Thoughts on the prices of these two rides.

I'm just curious as to what my car is worth. Here are the details:

2010 Acura TSX w/ Technology Package
    Black Exterior/ Ebony Leather Interior
    37,000 miles
    FWD
    2.4 L DOHC i-VTEC Inline 4 cyl
    5-Speed Automatic Transmission
Navigation, Bluetooth, Backup Camera, 6 Disc In Dash CD Changer, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, ABS, Air Bags Galore, Power, Memory Seats...
Interior Condition - 9 out of 10 (no such thing as perfect)
Exterior Condition - 8 out of 10 (a few noticeable scratches on the front & rear bumpers, some clearcoat scratches here & there, minor curb rash on 2 wheels) The paint shines & sparkles in the sunlight - no swirl marks at all. Car has never had any type of paint work. Dealer serviced (synthetic oil only). Tires have 75% treadlife left.

    Stamford, CT

    Thanks Bill!

Lemme guess, the wagon is green, huh?

$25k seems OK for the wagon, they paid about $21k with fees, $24k should buy it assuming it's got 40,600 on the clock.

$24k for the X3 is a VERY good deal.

Right now if it's a Honda you may well have equity in the thing.

Out here it's a $12k-12,500 car, in your market you might see up to $13k depending on how bad the scratches are. $12,500 out there is safe though.

Big thing is the scratches, we talking a $110 bumper airbrush job or into the primer on panels?

If it's really clean and silver or Black maybe closer to $14k to the right store, but Blue is little help I am afraid. On the other hand, it's not gold.

I'm not a BMW historian, but I think the automatic was available on the regular 318ti but not the Club Sport edition. If memory serves, the regular model offered a larger palette of options.

Thanks!!! The scratches could all be buffed out - if they still do that, they're all pretty small :shades:

Yep. The wagon is no sale green. 40,174 miles. I take it they just bought it? I really hate the color. For me it might be worth a grand or two more to have a color that I like. Is the color that much of a hit, or did you find do some digging?

I am guessing that they took a flyer on the X3 manual and can't move it.

    Thanks for the help.

well, the one he linked is supposedly a CS with auto, which is what sparked my original comment, "they offered that?!"

EDIT: OH, wait a sec! I just looked back and now I see the disconnect. I thought he was saying the car he was looking at was a CS. I now don't believe he was. That's where I got confused. I think I'm with ya now.

A reporter seeks to interview someone on how parents factor carpooling into their car choices. Does the parent with the big car unfairly do the most of the driving? Are the five-passenger car parents left out of carpools? Do you ever wish you had something bigger than/smaller than what you have? Does the price of gas or environmental concerns compete with the need for space? Assuming those are buffable I'd be around $17500-18000 on the car.

Figure a Honda dealer may be a few bucks higher assuming they need it, it's kinda miley for my liking on an 09 tho.
  • roadburnerroadburner Member Posts: 18,322
I also posted this in the CCBA thread, and apologize for the re-post. Anyways, I took a hard look at the ti today; no sale. The big problems were a CEL(knock sensor), and a bad ABS hydro or control unit($700-$1500). In all fairness the salesperson revealed those issues before he unlocked the car. It also had the wrong coolant in the radiator. Minor issues: only one key, no owners manual, and a blown RR speaker(less than $50). It might be silly but what really turned me off was evidence of a sloppy repair- a kludge, to be precise; some idiot had removed the interior trim panel on the drivers door and in doing so broke two of the retaining clips. Rather than pay the princely sum of seventy cents to replace the two clips the idiot used two sheetmetal screws to reattach the panel.. It makes me wonder about the existence of short cuts and butchery that I couldn't see.
    Oh well, the search continues.

Bill, gotta question. Do the completed listings on ebay offer a good way to judge the value of a car? If you check out a model you see tons of red unsold stuff with a few green numbers. What is your opinion?
  • robbiegrobbieg Member Posts: 350
I have always wondered this. I sometimes go and look at the completed listings and try and determine what a car is worth from them. The success rate isn't that great.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Got slammed at work... sorry :(

Book is $20,300... still, should be able to get $21k for it if it's super nice and no paintwork.

    37k on a highline 2010 is what's hurting here...
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Not for commonly traded cars.

I used to sell a LOT of cars on eBay, but these days it's not worth it. People on eBay generally expect to buy a car for wholesale or less, so I don't bother with it for a number of reasons.

    1) Nice stuff does better at dealer auctions with 1/10th the hassle.

    2) a number of sellers have realized that the only way to consistently make money there is to buy edgy stuff and claim it's nice.

I know a guy who makes a living selling on eBay, basically he buys cars on the cheap as long as they have a clean carfax.....
  • nyccarguynyccarguy Member Posts: 17,491
$20,300 sounds like a good number to me. I owe a hair over $18K on it. We do a decent amount of driving + we bought the car at the end of August 2009, even though it is a 2010.

    Thanks for your help.

Been looking at buying a 2000-2003 Miata. Edmonds TMV seems to be low by $2-$3k. I have not followed the price on these until the last couple of months. Has the value of these gone up recently or what? I have zeroed in on a 2000 British Racing Green LS model with tan leather and optional hard top. It has 34k miles, so it has been a garaged weekend toy. The guy is asking $9200, which is $4k above TMV, but normal asking price for Miatas. Am I crazy to pay this much for an 11 year old car?
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
That's about what I'd tell ya to get out of it as a minimum if it was you selling it.

I've seen clean ones bring $6-7k with 70-80k at auction... 34k miles? In the wrapper? I could see it bring $9k at the sale.

Remember, this isn't a TMV car, from what I have seen with TMV (I don't use it to appraise cars nor does anyone I know) is that it's probably broadly accurate on commonly traded stuff like a Camry or an Accord or something of that ilk, this is a niche car and these tend to be sold between enthusiasts.

Go look at TMV on a low mile 88-91 M3, M5 or M6, and then go and see what these cars actually sell for. Same thing.

If it's nice, no paintwork, etc.. grab it. $9200 is a VERY fair price.
