    Looking to buy a SUV. I want it fairly big even though we already have a minivan. Our boys are getting older and I feel that I will be lugging around a lot of sports equipment. I would love a Suburban but can't stomach the thought of paying 160 to fill up the tank. I want to spend no more than 30,000. Considering, both new and used cars. Initially was thinking 2008 MDX AWD. But I am also open to new cars, think Pilot or the Durango. My problem is that I would have to buy a stripped model which I am okay with, my wife may not be though. I have read a lot of reviews about the Durango and it seems to be very well liked. On the other hand, the last review I read did not rate the Pilot very high. Say I keep the car for 6 years is there much of difference between the three, in terms of long term reliability and resale. They are all priced about the same, with the Pilot being almost 2 grand cheaper.

    Quick peek at no-haggle dealer Fitzmall.com....

    Cheapest Durango is $31,722, AWD Crew.

    Enclave is $32,811 but that's FWD CX.

    Bingo, Traverse for $28,534, again FWD, but that's their only one under $30k. If you're concerned about reliability there's enough room below $30k for an extended warranty.

    Here's a bargain - the overlooked Hyundai Veracruz. $25,340 for their cheapest one. $27,128 with AWD. $29,929 for a Limited FWD, and try the leather seats before you rule that out, they're very comfy.

    Another bargain - Mazda CX9 AWD Sport for $27,868.

    Pathfinder is more trucky and long-in-the-tooth but they're $28,736 at fitzmall.com.

    They have one Tribeca under $30k, $29,318 for a Limited (AWD on every Subaru).

    No Highlanders under $30k, but $30,201 is close enough, AWD too.

    That's all the big ones that dealership group carries. They don't have a Honda store.

    I think when you look beyond the bigger brand names you can find some good values and plenty of options.

    My wife and I are going to order a new Explorer this weekend. We're having "ahem" a discussion of what to do with:

    Metro Boston
    2000 Honda Odyssey EX
    White
    Gray cloth interior
    115,000
    Tires, brakes are about 75% percent
    Front bumper needs a respray
    Only a couple of minor dings in the paint and interior is clean
    Some rust starting to form at right rear quater - typical Honda rust location

    Biggie - has a CEL. It needs a cat and an O2 sesnor and I need to do the timing belt.

    Wife would like to trade it in as is - I know we're gonna get maybe $1K on it.

    I'd like to do the cat, O2 sensor and timing belt - it'll run me about $1k to do it all - and then toss it up on craigslist for $3500.

    What say the oracles??

    I love fitzautomall. I really think that the Pilot is the benchmark for SUVs. So, it is hard to justify buying something else besides a Honda for relatively the same price. There is a new Durgano cheaper than the Crew. Truecar says I can get it for 28,000 or so. There is a no-haggle dealer Honda dealer in Boston that has awesome prices. Pilots start at 26,200 or so. I guess my question is am I better off having a 9 year old MDX or a 6 year old Dodge, Honda or Mazda. I am guessing that most people would say a the 6 year old Honda. My wife says I am crazy for even considering a Dodge. She doesn't trust them and says it won't be worth anything in 6 years.

    There is a no-haggle dealer Honda dealer in Boston that has awesome prices.

    Who's gone to no haggle in Boston?? I remember Cambridge Honda used to - is it them?

    Here in the DC metropolitan area, Browns Honda used to post prices, but they stopped. Bummer - I liked to use it just as a reference.

    Weymouth Honda has some really cheap leases posted, and a neat lease calculator. I assume they are no haggle.

    The problem with no haggle is that it doesn't always work as well as you'd think.

    Dealer posts no haggle price. Customer takes price to dealer B, dealer B beats it by $100 and sells the customer a car.

    So why isn't Dealer A's best price $100 less to start with ? Easy solution is to go into dealer A as a real buyer[with great credit] ready to pay $200 under the no-haggle price. Beats bouncing back and forth. Would it work ?

    Not in reality.

    The only way it would work is if we put every car online at pretty much net net. Which no dealer is going to do, profitable deals make up for cheap deals, so clearly nobody is going to stay in business very long by selling every car as cheap as humanly possible.

    And, after 16 years in the business, I can assure you that there's no true "best price". Take ANY price on Fitzmall.com and a dealer near them will beat it, pure and simple.

    I'm sure that happens all the time but it's just fine for some folks. I remember I bought a Cavalier way back in the dark ages at no haggle dealer. It was $49 over invoice - I was ordering and it was easy to buy.

    When I bought the Odyssey, it was selling at MSRP. At that price, I thought it was still a value and just paid it. I'm ordering an Explorer this weekend. I qualify for X plan. Could I get a better price? Maybe, but in case, it's again easy to just pay it.

    Trust me - I'm not a lay down. I've bought many a Honda and VW and gotten good deals IMHO. But it was alot of work.

    I'm with you there. I've worked deals and I've taken quick easy deals where I could have squeezed more out of it but you can only squeeze so many nickles.

    When I bought my first Ody my choices were MSRP and wait a few months or MSRP+$2K for immediate delivery. I don't believe in paying more than MSRP ever (not to say that dealers can't do such a thing - they make their money off of other folks on those) the decision was easy. As it turned out the dealer I went with came up with one much quicker than anticipated.

    What are you ordering? I have had mine for 2 calendar months.
    Since you drive a minivan you will be more used to it's size that I am, so far.
    It's better on gas than than you would think by reading the sticker.

    I'd like to get the Limited with BLIS, seatbelt airbags and towing but my wife is leaning towards the XLT with the above and package 202 (IIRC).

    The extras on the Limited such as the memory seats, homelink and adjustable pedals are what I'm after. She's afraid of the cost of the 20" tires when they need replacing but likes all the other Limited features.

    I have an XLT with 202A package and sunroof.
    I would have added tow package and power folding 3rd row.
    The Limited comes with 19 inch wheels(?), The dubs are optional on both.
    Limited also has cooled/heated seats? XLT 202 Heated only.

    Why do you put the Pilot as the "SUV" benchmark? Most reviews put it mid-pack and I was very un-impressed when I was shopping a year or so ago. Looking at a Suburban tells me you like something that's a real truck...and the Pilot "ain't" that. The only real SUV's out there that aren't full-size are the Pathfinder and 4Runner. 4Runner is probably out of budget but the Pathfinder should be do-able. As mentioned it's aging...and next year will come as a car-based cross-over like everything else. But it's a truck and really performs quite well. I drive Suburbans all the time for work...and also have an '08 Pathfinder for personal driving.

    If you're more intersted in the car-based things..I'd go for the MDX. It doesn't pretend to be an SUV and the performance is very impressive.

    I went to Cambridge Honda a couple of years ago to test-drive a new CRV. It didn't do much for me, & I told the salesman that. He then kept trying to get me to "sit down" to negotiate on a vehicle I didn't want, couldn't understand why I didn't want to "sit down". Then wanted me to see the sales manager, etc.....(to get into another discussion about why I didn't want to "sit down"(?). OTOH, All of my experiences at Boston area Honda & Acura dealers have been full of super high-pressure sales BS. It's amazing that in this day & age, they don't realize what a turn-off that is.

    As far as "My wife says I am crazy for even considering a Dodge." (robbieg)--Listen to her(!). Personally I'd pick the 2008 MDX AWD, assuming you find a nice one. And Pilots are supposed to be very reliable.....hopefully you can find a dealer you can tolerate to buy one from......

    Hey Bill I found another SHO and and following the advice from Qbrozen was looking for a difference of $14,000, between my old car and the new one the Dealer is thinking more like $17,500 with such a large difference should I move on? here's the two cars:

    I really don't care if I get the best price. I just want a fair price. The Honda dealer outside of Boston priced a Pilot almost 400 lower than my local Truecar price. For 400 bucks I would stay home and buy it. However, the local Honda store quoted me over 2000 over the Boston Honda Store. It was clear that they weren't going to be close. For me it is worth a lot to to not have to haggle. Not worth 2000 but clearly worth 400-500. Some people really don't want to haggle. I don't enjoy it. I am sure others do.

    Most people do preliminary pricing on the web and just want a price close to what they have learned.

    Well, hell, even if he's not budging at all on his car, he's offering you $15k for yours. Bill said yours is $16k+.

    $14k difference is fair. That's $16k for yours and $30k for the SHO. Or $16,500 for yours and $30,500 for his. Any way he wants to slice it.

    I agree 100% :) I told him I was going to look at a few more cars let me know when you want to deal. Considering the fact Lincoln can't give away their cars, you would think he would be willing to deal, unless they overpaid. Which again is not my problem.

    Heck, even if it's rough, has a check engine light.. it's gotta be worth $2,500... maybe more if it's real nice.

    Check engine light isn;t the end of the world... it's gonna go to auction anyhow and a shipper will probably buy it.

    Depends if that bumper hit shows on the Carfax or not.. people have been real funny about em lately...

    Car gets bumper cover repainted, shows accident on Carfax, nobody wants it.

    or...

    Car gets hit by freight train, happens in a county that doesn't sell data to carfax, car has frame damage, Carfax is clean, someone sells it as a CPO.

    Go figure.

    Anyways...

    Figure $5k-5500... in and around that range.

    Book and market is dropping... $15k is now about right (That or I wasn't aware it was a 4cyl).

    $32,500 is reasonable. Those are doing in the $30-31k range at auction.. if they're selling for $32,500 they have $29-30k in it I'd think.

    Difference between new and used is that the margins on used are MUCH bigger than new, dealers tend to make $$ on used.

    $17500 isn't too bad at all.

    Sadly that color is about the weakest color for an Odyssey right now..

    I'd be $15-$15,500 on it... you might find more but it's a tough tough color to move.

    Next time... Pearl White on Asian cars, or Black. If it was Pearl White I'd be $16500-17k on it.

    Hmmmm 4500 grand more and I would be close to new a 2011, full warranty and lower interest rate on the loan which would make the difference even smaller.

    I'd be $2,500 on it sight unseen, and that's with issues. If it's nice, I might even be $3k on it.

    Galves is $3500, Galves is usually safe, so I figured even with issues it's gotta be worth a grand back of Galves at least if not more.

    Didn't get quite what I was hoping for, but did get more than the wife was hoping for... so I guess that's that. Roughly about $1200 more than a dealer would have given me for it.

    They bought it in April, likely in and around the $26k mark plus cert costs, freight, shop, etc. It's an ex-rental.

    Theyre still doing around $25,500 or so at auction plus fees. Galves is $24,250.

    $34,995? I'd have it online at $28,995 by now if it were me.... Realistically you should be able to grab one like it without Nav for $30k-31k CPO'd.

    Look on AutoTrader.... Herb Chambers Infiniti up in Boston has 2, a Grey one and a Silver one for $30,500-31k or so. Also, that Blue is a bad bad color for resale.

    I used my Zip code in Jersey and searched within 300 miles and they came up.
