Never give those lowballers a 2nd chance. You know they'll grind you down on price, then come back later and complain that their $3700 car isn't "like new." :)

Hi - if you have the time, I would really like to see what the trade in values are on this car. I'm trying to decide if it is worth taking on a road trip to trade in or better just to sell it at home...

    Thanks in advance!

    Location: St. Louis, MO
    Year/Make/Model: 2002 Nissan Altima
    Body Style: 4 Door
    Engine: 3.5 L - Manual 5-speed
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 141,000
Color: Exterior = Silver, Interior = Black
Major Options: ABS, 17" Alloy Wheels, Power Sunroof, BOSE system, Xenon headlights
    Condition:
Average Condition (between Fair and Good) - moderate dings, a few scratches, somewhat worn interior
Tires - 20% worn (replaced 1 year ago)
    Brakes - 7 mm remaining
    Maintenance - normal
Other: No accidents, insurance claims, etc.

Ex Rental? No spank-you. Just curious. Crazy 1 yr depreciation.

    Red 2009 G37X S

I know you don't like the red, but I dig it. I think the miles are super low & as a used car, the dealer puts a premium on that.

Have only owned my fully loaded 2011 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring (everything except AWD, and every accessory) since December, but with the ability to have a free company car, as much as I love it, I want to cut the bill out. I have a high pay off, but trying to see what the most I can get for it, then how much of a check I need to come up with for the difference to pay off.

Thinking my best bet to sell is Carmax, Carsense, etc. for quick & easy.

Location: Philadelphia, PA suburbs...registered and tagged in southern Delaware
    Year/Make/Model: 2011 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring FWD
    Engine: 3.7L V6, 6-spd Automatic
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 10,794
Color: Liquid Silver with Black leather
Major Options: Heated/memory leather & Blind spot monitoring (std on GT), Navigation, Power Liftgate, Power Sunroof, Factory Remote start, Splash Guards, Roof rails, Rear bumper step pad, Sunroof deflector, Cargo net, Weathertech FloorLiners with factory mats still in bag
    Condition:
-Dealer maintained, with all service records
-No scratches, no dings, no scuffs. Rear seats never used
-New car, essentially, 10k miles aside
Other: No accidents, insurance claims, etc.

New ones always have 0%, etc. financing, but there aren't too many 2011's on the used market yet. Just want to sell, pay off the difference. Ideas?
  • stl2112stl2112 Member Posts: 10
Anyone have an idea on this? I'm not being pushy, just need to decide in the next 4 hours whether to take a lenghty road trip to carmax and the dealer with this car... Thanks again for any help!
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    No problem!

Sorry was at the auction this morning

Probably a $2,500 car. Shop it to death you might get $3k but the stick really hurts it...

V6 stick? Throw it on ebay. I bet it does pretty well.

Yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun even for $5k private party.
  • nyccarguynyccarguy Member Posts: 17,490
Did you buy anything good at the auction? Did you notice prices higher or lower than usual? Was there a specific car that YOU thought went for way too much money?

Thanks a lot everyone - never really thought about eBay. I'll plan on it skipping the roadtrip for now and look at eBay/private party.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
It's a big bump, plus it has Navi.

Galves is $27,125 on it,. might break that at auction too.

I'd think as a CPO $32k should buy it... I'd be $30-31k on it retail.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Kind of a tough call...

Book is $23,375 on it... these are bringing $27/28+ at auction, but nowhere near the Northeast... most of them are in Texas, California, Florida, etc.

I'd say shop it around to some Mazda dealers... figure $25-26k might be doable... the FWD on a heavily optioned SUV makes it a kind of odd duck.

    $6,000 on eBay ;)
  • beach15beach15 Member Posts: 1,305
Thanks. Thinking Carmax is a great first stop, hoped to get down to MD today but was tied up. Whoever is highest, which is hopefully doable, we'll see. Was going to try a few Mazda dealers here in the Philly area too.

Just need to get it off my books, and minimize how many additional thousands I need to pay it off.

If I were you I'd try shopping the car to a bunch of Mazda dealers, they're likely to be the high bidders on the car.

It's been my experience that cars like this can be real tough to sell privately.

My son came across a 1998 XJ8 VDP with 72K on it. The private owner is asking $7000. The only visible flaws are a broken off electric antenna and chipped trim around the floor shifter. My son is turning into a true Anglophile(loves British football, Brit car mags, etc.) but I suspect the car would wind up being a money pit for him(and me)
    What's your take?

    Thanks!!!

I was wondering which of the two record checking company do you prefer? I know nothing can beat a good mechanical exam but a mechanic can't give you the car history. Also would you pay to get a car certified?
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Don't buy a 98.

Period. As they have aged they can have some hugely expensive problems.

Get a 96-97, they are darn near bulletproof.

Carfax gets all the press, Autocheck is a bit more comprehensive and often catches things that Carfax does not (Such as auction announcements) but people want to see the Carfax.

IMO they are far from a prepurchase inspection, and I have seen way too many cars with structural damage announcements at auction with clean carfaxes.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Galves is $5000 or so, but these are doing into the 6s at auction if nice. Probably not going to get $6300 on trade but $5500 ought to be obtainable.
  • roadburnerroadburner Member Posts: 18,320
Thanks, I'm actually looking at buying it. They have a $9999 tag on it now. I'm thinking $8500 would be fair.

Hey I just finished the deal $16,000 for my Escape and $30,998 for the SHO. I can live with a $15000 difference, I'm going to spend an addition $425 to get car certified so I can qualify for the 1.9 percent financing from Ford.
