Thanks for the tip Terry,,, guys I know wont touch an inop. Maybe I'll fly back up here in Feb and haul it back (The 2-3 days off will keep me sane!) Actually, it doesnt need very much really.. A lot less than the 59 will need..

My father is looking to buy out his lease on a 2000 M-Coupe. He wants to try to negotiate with the leasing company since the buyout is higher than what the car is probably worth at auction, by a lot. It would be helpful to know what these have been selling for lately at the auctions. It is a pristine 2000 black/tan with 12,000 miles. Thank you!

And you'll be happy to know that mom made Beef Wellington for dinner, and I've been drinking PG Tips all day.

Keep those booze credits fresh :-)

    Guys,
Need another car and am looking at these two - what is a good price for these:

2000 MB E320 - black/black(leather), E2 (sunroof, sensor, bose). 42K miles and comes with the MB extended warranty thru 7yr/100K

    1999 MB E320 Wagon - black/tan (leather), E2 (sunroof, Bose), MB phone. 33K miles.

Both are very clean and have been well maintained. I can buy either for $37,900 but that seems a little high given the used mkt. Thoughts and comments?

    Thanks
    Adam
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... I hope you had a nice Xmas ... The E320 is a little stiff in the miles, and it's the wrong color if your down south -- But, if you are a Yankee boy, it's the right color.

If, it's clean.. no dings, the tires are new, all the service records and it looks like no one sat in the back seat .. $37 would be a fairer price.

Now the 99 wagon, is lower in miles and a better price for that would be more like $36 and some change, they are popular.

    Good Luck...

    Terry.

Thanks for the prompt reply and info. I have two general questions related to your posts:

You mention color - I am in texas. Does color really impact price? How much would black v white impact price in Texas?

Does the extended MB warranty add anything to the resale value? Do extended warranties in general add anything?

    Thanks

Hey guys. I hope you both had a great Christmas. I want to run another LS400 by you. It's in Indianapolis, but we'll be passing through the neighborhood this weekend. It's a '99 Black exterior, gray interior, 49,744 miles, Nak stereo, CD changer, Moonroof, heated seats, HIDs. They are asking $37,990, Edmunds says 33,904 certified which this one is, and $32,654 uncertified. They hit trade-in value at $27,442. Thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Quentin

....... Well not really, but like Texas ... living in Florida get's to be a little on the hot side.

Most people in Dallas (Arlington Hts) and Houston like those lighter colors, the Pearl whites, light tans and bieges etc. As a rule, a darker vehicle is worth $500 to $1,500 less, depending on the vehicle ...
the #s I shot you, were based on a nice southern boy ... So, if you go to a lighter color, just flip the numbers ....

The warranty is worth about a Nick ..

..... Happy Holidays Q... what did Santa bring you..?

I knew if I brought up a black vehicle your head would pop up ..l.o.l....

Well, this thing better be a CCCCream puff for that kinda of money ... it real stiff in the miles catorgory, but you know the routine --

I'm, thinkin' if it's Ultra nice .. they paid "around" $28ish for it, and by the time they do the Re-con, Certify it, Dent queen, tires. ..etc, etc.. they are on the hook for maybe around $29 and a half.(give or take)

$31,500 and maybe a little change, should buy this vehicle with less than a week to go in the year ....

    Hey .. Good Luck..!

    Terry.

That was a good guess by Edmunds. They are usually waaay in the tree's ...
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
What can I say? You know how I feel about black vehicles. You also know that if it isn't a cream puff, I won't be buying it. :-) Santa brought me clothes and some money. Take care, happy new year, and all that stuff. :-) With all the snow and everything on the ground, it's ok if I don't find anything until Spring.... But I'll keep looking just in case. :-)

I recently visited a Honda dealer looking to buy a 2002 Odyssey.

They offered $23500 for my '98 Toyota Landcruiser.

It's black, 51K miles, MSRP was over $53K brand new. Has all factory options(3rd row, leather, moonroof, rear differential, gold and wood trim, tow pkg)

Is this trade reasonable or should I keep looking.

    I live in Cleveland, OH.

    Thanks for any help.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    .... I see it's a little snowy in Cleveland..

    Who's the dealer ..? Sunnyside..?

The miles are a tinge on the high side but -- IF- it's clean, no dents, New tires, haven't done too many tailgate parties at the Browns games -- Looks like a 2000 ... It's a $25/$26,000 vehicle all day long .. and then some.

If it's super nice and clean and it needs -0- , I will strike you a reader for it, for $25.

    Keep us informed ...

Bill or Terry, going to look at a 2000 BMW 528iT Wagon, 12,000 miles, Black/tan leather, auto, premium package, htd. seats, Cd changer (unfortunately no premium stereo, or Xenons!). Is at a BMW dealer, CPO, supposedly bought new & then traded in there, asking $34,900. Claim they won't drop price more the $500.

Advice on what this is worth/what to offer?

BTW, I actually do intend to buy one of these cars I'm always asking you guys for advice on, & then I'll stop bugging you! :-) (Well, at least until I get "the itch" again, but usually takes at least 6 mo. to start developing)

Thanks for all your previous advice, & Happy New Year!

2002 Jetta GLS 1.8T, Tiptronic, Leather Pkg. w/heated seats, Sport Luxury Pkg., Monsoon system. 5050 miles (all highway), 5K service done, immaculate. Just curious what it would be worth. (MSRP: $24,675)
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... This vehicle has like . ...No miles.

Black and tan, great color Combo if you are more north .... I will bet it looks sharp on the wagon..

It's got all the toy's ... Sooo, I'm thinkin' it's worth "around" the tall side of $30, maybe they crept closer to $31 and some change.

This close to the end of the year -- EOY deal.
I have a feelin' that if you went in with CIF (cash in fist) and "locked and loaded" and ready to buy, $33ish might buy this beauty ..

    I hope this helps ...

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... These are hot little vehicles...it's toyed out with no klicks ..

$19ish, and if it was a EOY deal, a dealer might put $20 on it ...

    Thanks Terry.

The dealer was Rick Case. It will be needing new tires. The body is good shape. No major problems but there are a few small door dings. It's been a excellent vehicle.

I may try another dealer and/or look to sell it myself.

I'm hoping the snow will increase the value/demand. I guess I should've been in Buffalo for their 25 inches of snow. :)
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Rick Case off of the shoreway ..? He's the largest in the country..

I'm a little surprised ... I remember when he used to sell motorcycles out of his garage. .l.o.l.

Ok, let's say it needs tires.. there's $400, let's say the Dent Dr. has to pop out 8/9 real nice little dings, there's $200, let's say that you are a slob ... and it needs a $200 detail and of course a service, and the Certify..$700 --
It's still worth $25, you might want to roll over to Ganley ...

    Let us know ...

I have an 01 Sienna XLE with less than llk miles. White, tan leather, 1 power door, spotless inside and out and 3 oil changes by the dealer (that maybe yes, maybe no sludge issue). For my own reasons I'm ready to move on outta my 14month old Toyota. Based on what you've been kind enough to tell me and what I've read regarding other posts here, I tried to trade yesterday for a Yukon with a fair amount of confidence I had a 22-23k trade. I spent 2 hours at a dealer in the morning and 3 at another in the afternoon. I couldn't get either to budge a penny higher than $19.5.
In both cases, we cut to the chase fairly quickly. I told them I was ready to do the deal today if I could buy their car for a $1000 over and walk away from my $22.5k note on the Sienna. Neither showed any interest. The car was detailed and totally empty. I even took everything outta the glove box but the owner's booklet.
I've been doing this long enough to know there's times you can and times you can't and you just need to walk away when the deal isn't there. Both dealers said the low and no interest money on new cars was slamming the used car market. Any thoughts?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Thanks for the info. I am not trading it anytime soon (just got it 2 months ago), I was just curious to see how much I have lost already on it.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Well, you did everything right.. that's for sure!

Clean, no French fry invasions, no miles, 5 dr, and the right color -- ready to "Front line" ...hmmmmm.

I'm not sure what area you live in. ..But, I'm going to guess, that you are working with some dealers that "probably" have 15/16 used vans in stock ... and there not moving, especially Chevy's or any GM Van ( those Montana's aren't breaking any sales records, that's for sure )

This is not an exact business that's for sure .. But, I will say that if you shop it around in a 50 mile radius that might help ...

Some food for thought here ... A $19,500 figure on the Toyota is way low, they can't buy em' at the auctions for that, nor do they have a need or want, there a Domestic Dealer (not picking on them) ... a Toyota dealer or any buyer at the block will pay at least ..$21,000+ for a nice clean Sienna XLE ....

I feel you said it best, when you said - that they showed "little interest" .. perhaps that have no idea of what they might have ....

A lot of times -- a Ford or a Honda.. etc, dealer will call me and ask me what a vehicle is worth, because they are so used to looking at "just" Fords..or "just" Honda's --- they page through some auction reports and get an idea. Now remember, if they go to the auctions, they might watch 1 or 2 run .. never really getting an idea of what they are doing ...

Also keep in mind, that most of the auctions are closed for the Holidays ... and won't open til next week ... so unless, they have "contacts" through wholesalers or other Import dealers, they will only guess ...

I hope this helps a little, but I will be interested on the outcome of this .... So let us know..!

White, CD, newish tires. No dings, dents, nothing. Spotless inside.

    28.5k miles.

    Live in Raleigh NC.

What would be a fair trade-in price? I've noticed thet Edmunds TMV on this car has fallen significantly in last 6 weeks or so.

    Many thanks.

With the VW, don't know if this would matter or not, but I live in Maryland. I know Jettas are VERY popular in DC (I go there at least 3 times a week, and they are EVERYwhere). You think they would kick 21-22?

I got lucky with my Protege ES. Traded it for $11,500 when KBB said $10,715. I was negative on it anyway, but we won't go there now. I just need to keep a car for longer than a year... :)

They say its Dealer Certified? They are jacking the price up 2k from the regular dealer price on a car i am looking at because they say its a dealer certified car? I don't really care if it is on not it still has 2 years of its dealer war...etc? Anyway thanks for any answer on that. Late
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
"Dealer certified" refers to a most-of-the-time rigerous inspection program the cars go through to get them back into manu. specifications. They check all systems to be sure everything's in operating order. You can find more info on the carmaker's website to what they do to the car to make it certified. I don't know if it's worth an extra $2K though, but that will have to be your decision I guess. It's like making peace of mind standard I guess. :)
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
...seem to be all the rage for the used car side of the dealer today. Essentially, the dealers picks over the best available used cars that meet the manufacturer's criteria, runs them through the manufacturer's check list to be certified, then pays for a warranty in order to offer it to the customer as essentially the pick of the litter.

I personally would consider certified on something in the luxury class. The way I feel about it is that if I were going to drop $30K on a used Lexus/MB, that's a lot of coin for a used car - I need some assurance. At that point, I could get a new Acura for that money and have a factory warranty.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
Certified should carry with it an extended warranty past the original factory warranty. $2K is definitely steep, but it IS nice to have 75K or 100K of coverage on the car. If it is just the standard factory warranty remaining on the car, then its not really certified (well, not by my standards, at least).

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

Nectalover1, make sure that the vehicle is actually being sold through its manufacturers' official certified used vehicle program if you are interested in buying a certified used car or truck. I say this because some dealerships sell so-called "certified" used vehicles that they certify themselves rather than abide by their manufacturer's official program. Vehicles that are sold through these quasi-certified used vehicle programs often do not receive the same sort of inspection, have the same stringent quality standards, or come with the same level of warranty that they would have if they were sold through an official program. For that matter, I know for a fact that some dealerships who actually are enrolled in official programs do not even bother to put their cars and trucks through the mandatory 120-something point inspection process that is required, but rather just say that they do. This sort of defeats the purpose of these programs, if you ask me. However, they are good in that many dealers put their best vehicles in them and because they often come with a manufacturer-backed extended warranty. In my personal opinion, $2,000 seems like a pretty stiff price to pay just to get a vehicle that is certified.

....... This is a topic we have talked about on many different occasions ....

What's it do .....? --- Most dealers when they take a vehicle in, will change the filter and oil, perhaps a tire balance, look for a potential leak and kinda give it the "Neighborhood walk" ... run it around the block and catch what might be there ...

Not much different on what they would do if there was no Certification "process" ..

Does the consumer win on this NEW, Exciting way of doing business ... not really.

Basically the dealer would have done this any other time, but now depending on the warranty they can make an extra $4/$5/$600+ off the warranty ...

I always advice that the consumer negotiate's the warranty "out of the deal" (maybe save $1,2/$1,5/$2,000 ) ... or, have a Warranty Co. standing in the wings via Edmunds or whatever source has warranty ratings and go from there ....

    I hope this helps ...

thanks very much for the info.....it was disappointing shopping two dealers first thing who didn't wanna touch my Sienna with a ten foot pole. No matter how many times I do this I forget you gotta shop enough to find a place where they want my car as much as I want theirs. Just needed to know I wasn't dreaming making the offer I did. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted. I shall work it again on Monday.

Terry, I am curious about the trade-in vs. retail value of my 2001 Chevy Impala LS....

    Here are the details:

I am in the S.Fla area.

    Thanks!

Our Dad is looking to trade his Lincoln LS in on a SUV.
Its a 2000 V8 with 14k, it has the sport package, heated leather, s. roof, upgrade wheel, Alpine in dash cd, traction ctrl. It's dark grey with the black interior.
He babies it, and it looks new, the dealer is telling him $20,000.

He is a little upset, he paid $37,000 for it, what do you think it may be worth, and should he sell it out right?

    Thanks in advance,
    Happy New year.

I looked up on some sites about buying used cars and found a bit of info on Cert Cars, and all your info has cleared it up. Basicly i am paying for an extended warranty which may or may not have had the car go through the 120 point inspection, so i will try to negoitate the sale price with the warranty in mind thanks and great board.

1992 MB 300E sedan. Black with grey leather. CD changer, slider, all records, 128K miles. Private party sale. Asking $12,000. What do you think ?

...... IF... it has all the service records, and you have all the history on it -- and it's a .."nice vehicle" a small amount of the dings and dent projects going for it, miles wont scare a MB, Volvo, Toyota etc buyer --- of course, "knee deep in rubber", and looks like a 98/99 ... it's worth $12 Grand.

I can't see the vehicle ... but, if it's "all there" this little devil could pull close to $11 on the wholesale side ---- Sounds like a deal ...!

    Enjoy ..!

....... It sounds like a nice vehicle, I drove probably the twin to it for 3/4 months and loved it ..!

I see you are from the Philly area, and these vehicles are popular and do sell well .... I have to think right now, there is a lot of LS's even with the V8's and the Sport pack going around, there is a bunch at the auctions ...

If it's as clean as you say it is ..looks like a 02, and it needs -0- ... you might be lookin' at $21, but that's a might...

On the retail side, a good "asking" price would be $23,900 ...and go from there.

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... It's the right color, and these darn things are super popular ....

I'm thinkin' this little rabbit would do the "ultra high" $13's at the block ... and on the retail side -- $15/$16, would be my guess.

    I hope this helps ...

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... This is the right color for S. Florida, or the S. Bronx ...l.o.l.

Actually these are pretty nice vehicles, No miles and yours has all the stuff -- and then some.

Mid $15's.. a "loaded up" LS is actually kinda hard to find ...

    This should help ...

If Bill or Terry were in the market today for a car, and had a budget of approximately $20K to spend, and planned on KEEPING the car for personal use for several years, what would each buy ? (And assume real-world purchase price, not what the insiders get to pay at auction.)

Here's why I'm asking: my girlfriend will be looking for a new car/SUV in the next few months, with a budget of ~$20K, and is willing to take a 1-2 year old used car or a new car. Her first pick is a Honda Accord coupe (probably 4-cyl EX, "handshaker"), which I would recommend she buy new since Honda's don't depreciate much in 1-2 years. Her alternate pick, since we live in Reno, Nevada, and have snowy weather to deal with, is an SUV like a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The GCs seem to depreciate rapidly.... looks like she could get a loaded '99-'00 in the same ballpark as a mid-line Accord.

See where I'm going with this ? I kinda think the used GC gives more for the $ vs. the new Accord, but there's a build quality tradeoff too.

What do you guys think ? And please, no Jaguar convertibles or 1983 diesel Vauxhall wagons.... :-)

    My, but weve been busy.

I think that is a decent.. but not great price for that 300E myself.

Put it this way, I know where there's a Smoke Silver 400E V8 for less than that with similar miles.

    And I know that a Silver 300E with 109K, albeit a 1991, just sold for $9200.
I like that car around $10K retail myself.
