That's ok, if it's as clean as you say it is, it would do any easy $3,5/$3,700+ at the block.
This a great retail vehicle, make it look like a Diamond, throw it in your biggest paper with a Big Fat 5 liner ... for $5950 and let someone come along and insult with $5,1/$5,300/$5,500 and slitely smile, and get the cash ....
Good Luck ....
Terry.
I will try to catch up with everything tommorow ....

Just buy it Bill. You know you want it. And like Terry says, buy what you like.
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Any idea what a 96 Infiniti Q45 would go for at auction?
It has 58K miles, black/black, traction control. Great shape. In SF Bay area.
I'm looking to trade it in...and trying to prepare for the shock of huge depreciation.
Thanks!
A LHD Car with EPA/DOT releases.. came in Via the "Great WHite North" (Toronto)
IIRC, I paid 160K for it and sold it for 170K... And that was a year ago..
175K? Reserve not met? Optimistic IMO.
Still, that was a sickeningly amazing car.
Bill
If its nice, not a touring, but still nice..
I think $11K.
Bill
metmdx
I'm thinkin' you are going to be a little closer "towards" the $12 figure -- 50K 97's that are *Ultra nice*, are doing close to the $17 figure .. the black will help you in your area..
I'm sure Bill fell a little short cause' of the color, you live in SF, not Sanford ..l..o..l...
Terry.
1997 Civic LX Silver with 55,000 miles
Keyless Enrty is an option (Automatix Tarnsmission)
Clean Condition & has new tires.
The dealer has probably $8 or so in it..I'm thinkin' $9/$9,500 will do it.
Terry.
If this is a "real deal" vehicle ... Clean, no dings.. no dongs, new sneakers -- I mean "all there" ... this dealer has to have close to $18 or so in it ..
I feel $20 or so, will take it home...
Terry.
Fair price? Seems a couple thousand high to me. Reputable dealer - I have done business with them before.
Mark
What should I expect to be offered by a dealer and what is a realistic number if I try to sell it myself?
Ed
Is this true? Are inventories super low? What happened to all the cars? Finally, are prices going up at wholesale?
Thanks.
All Auctions shut down from (depending on the area) about the 15th of Dec to "around" the 1st/2nd week of January.
The ones that do run, are holding mostly re-runs that have been on the ground since, let's say the 1st week of Dec and the UCmgr has decided to keep them there. Sometimes it's just not worth the trouble to grab em'.. transport back to the dealership - and hold their breath, til the start of the Jan auctions, most of those vehicles (depending on the dealer ..and vehicle) .. are worth $500/$1,000/$1,500+++ less than market, and can't retail out of them. they bring em' to the auctions and hope someone will fall down and hit their head, and pay $18,000 for a $15,500 vehicle.. --- I see it everyday.
Kinda keep in mind, this is not an exact science -- and it also has to do with the experience of the Dealer principle and staff...
I probably talk with 30/40 dealers a month, you know .. what's up , hows the volume, how's the grosses', what's selling.. what's not.
Just because a Dealer hang's a "shingle" doesn't mean they know what they are doing or has a reliable staff that can get in .. and get out successfully on a month to month basis ...
I hate to bust your friends bubble, but the auctions are Bzzzzzy as of last week, as they have been in my short 18 yr experience.
I would love to read his post .. where it's at?
Terry.
If you want to sell it on the street side, have it detailed, make it look like a diamond. Have all the service records sitting in the glove box. Drop a a "big fat" 5 liner in the biggest paper in your area for $9,950 --- It's easier to sell a vehicle at a lower price and drop a couple hundred, than it is to be high in the paper and compete with everyone, and have to drop $1,000 or so...
Let someone come out and insult you to death for $9,5/$9,600/$9,700 ... give em' a kiss, take the money -- and start lookin' for your next vehicle..
Let us know ...
Terry.
I listen to the show from time to time via the internet, as I live in Knoxville Tennessee. I was listening yesterday coming back from Atlanta to the show.I had traveled to an automobile auction in the area.I guess what got me was Clark telling the audience that consumers should be able to save another 10 % off the cost of a used automobile.I have friends all over the US that are automobile dealers none of them are loaded down with inventory. Used cars at the wholesale level or dealer only auctions are about half of what they usually offer.Let me just tell you.Nice clean cars the kind you and your family would want to own are bringing a premium.Junk cars and trucks I do not feel comfortable about selling to the public are cheap.I went to the auction yesterday to buy several 4x4 trucks and had to come home empty.A friend of mine in Atlanta had to buy 51 additional used cars just last week because he can not seem to trade for enough nice cars to sell. Long story short if someone can tell me where all these cars and trucks are so cheap please let me know.I think the show is alright I do believe the automobile business gets picked on too much some time. There are good and bad dealers. I personally choose to be on of the good ones. I need inventory and will pay top dollar for 3rd door Chevrolet Z-71's
Ed
them GM excab4x4s up here to Syracuse
NY..and that Toy with the km's.
They bring ALL the money !..........Geo
I do wonder a little when someone say's I can't find em' ... They are the there, perhaps not in Atlanta at a price he want's to "steal" ...I mean buy them at. I just left the N. Carolina auctions, and their 4WD's are going for around $500 to $700 less than Manheim or Detroit -- there supposed to, they are 700 miles south.. .l.o.l...
But anyway, like I said before, I have no Idea of who or what that deal is all about --- But, If I need vehicles, I make a reservation at a nice Hotel and fly, or drive to the location where I can save some Jingle ( I do it all the time)... especially if I was going to buy 50 some vehicles.
Hmmmmm, I'm not very good in the math department but, 50 X $500 = $25,000. And when you buy that much stuff, you can get free float, $200 a vehicle more or free transport, sometimes all three -- .... Bill will attest to that deal.
Yep, I kinda thought a Rookie was driving that bus, thank goodness he doesn't work for me --
Starting this week, all the Auctions will be quite Bzzzy, thank you very much.
Terry.
It's a 96, looks nice, color is right, mileage is just ok ... I'm not standing next to it, but I think I'm lookin' at a $13/$14 vehicle "If" -- it's stone cold new ....
Well you are the Jag God, what's your thinkin' ....?
Terry.
http://clarkhoward.com/cgi-bin/boards/postlist.pl?Cat=4,6&Board=clarkhowardcars
It's the post "USED CAR BUSINESS" in caps like that. Nothing special except a few responses by posters.
For those unfamiliar, Clark Howard is a well-known consumer advocate here in Atlanta. His daily radio show is broadcast on the mega-news station here, WSB. He is very popular and is known for his frugality and strong pro-consumer attitude. His main page is

What do you care if the dealer "Certifies" it or not ..? It doesn't put a dime in your pocket, and by trading it in .. you will loose at least $1,500 --- Maybe I'm missing something in your post ...?
Terry.
This new "Certified" program, is a money maker for the dealers. They change the oil and filter .. maybe some much needed tires, gives it the "neighborhood" walk (drives it around the block) to make sure that all is well, drops a warranty in your lap that they make 40% on .. and life is good.
Yep, I'm sure it would get the package...
Terry.

I could see it pulling 14K.. but...
It reminds me of the stunning 73K miles Topaz/Cream Vanden Plas I picked up for $15,400.
IN OCTOBER!
I.E. $21,900 is dreaming in Technicolor with Lucas THX Surround Sound on Avalon speakers.
I'm selling lower-mile 97s for less thanthat for gawds sake. I just rolled a Sapphire/Oatmeal 45K 1997 XJ6 for like $19,500.
However, that car IS Topaz/Oatmeal (THE Color combo for an XJ6).
Still... If you wanna spend $21,900 on a Jag with 60K on the clock, it'd better say "XJ8" onthe back and the VIN better have a "W" inthe 11th digit.
Shoot for $16-17K.. max and assuming perfection.
Bill
As I see it: (And I think you do more buying than me tho)
Hell.. I'll make this a little lesson on how to buy cars.
1) You need to know where they are and be willing to travel to go find them. You also need to know what to buy where.
example: When I bought Jaguars, I'd go after the darker colored cars in Florida. If I needed White or Topaz cars, I'd buy them in Detroit or PA.
Black? Racing Green? "Come to Florida... when you need it bad, we got it good"
So, I can find out what cars are where. I am also willing to buy them where theycheaper. Shoot, you guys think I used to go to Detroit inJanuary for the fun of it?
2) You need to have a rough idea of what a car is worth. For this, some people rely onlittle flip-books and say things like "Wow, I just bought a Jag for average book!" or "What are they nuts? They're paying over clean book for that Silver 98 325i with 25K miles?"
Some of us (Me, and I'm sure Terry agrees) dont care what the books say very much. I look at a program called Manheim Market Report (Sorry guys.. subscriber site, and you have to be a dealer to subscribe). Basically, this tells me what cars like the one I am looking at are selling for at auction. So, If I know that, say, a 40Kish mile 1998 XJR will set me back $26-27K or so, depending on color, I could care less where Black Book pegs it. I care what they are doing across the block.
Experience comes into play here.
3) You need to have an idea of what the market is up to. Remember how I posted on Wednesday about how nutso things were last week at a huge sale? Why do ya suppose that was?
Simple. Most of the sales were either VERY limited (Like Terry said, junk nobody cared about and.. well.. if the banks werent running cars that ALONE should say something) or closed.
For 2+ weeks.
Uh Oh! We need cars!
So, Mr dealer on Clark Howard doesnt realize that he may have to pay up a tad. That's basically typical of right now. The auctions are a-hoppin. Prices, demand and supply are all up as I see it.
Point is, If you're spending millions of dollars a year on assets which can have pretty volatile values, you'd better know what the heck you're doing.
Sounds like he doesnt.
Bill
1993 Mercedes SE - teal green
121,000 miles
One owner, purchased new, serviced primarily at MB dealership
Minor wreck when car was 3 years old required replacement of hood - paint job looks great
A/C requires freon addition every 6-8 weeks to work properly
Otherwise, in perfect condition - always garaged, never smoked in, etc.
Obviously, this car is going to take the right person looking for it - any suggestions on pricing and how / where to market it??
Thanks in advance!!
This car is as clean as ours, waxed 5/6 times a year,no dings,no scrapes it looks like a 2002.
It's tan with tan interior.
Thanks again.
You guys always come through.
M.
Looking to buy 2001 MB ML320 like new purchased 12/00. It is white w/black interior. He wants $32K with 9950 miles private party (he declined carmax $29400 offer). No CD or Sunroof. South Florida. What should I offer? He also says I could assume MB lease $592/mo for 23m w/$25K residual. Thanks!
The miles are a little stiff, but you know that.
This is going to depend on what part of the US of A your hanging your hat at... I'm thinkin', it's worth in and around the $15's on the wholesale side.
My thinking here, would be to retail this, I feel if you describe this Bad boy in a great 5 liner Ad in your largest paper (skip the miles) for let's say $17,900 and let someone "eyeball" it, you could see $17,1/$17,3/$17,500 ....
I hope this helps ...
Terry.
Based on what your telling us, you probably need to have the front and year fascia's re-shot (don't panic, let the dealer do that) or new owner.
It's worth in the high $11's on the wholesale side. And on the retail end your lookin' at a $13,900 asking price.
The Benz, well there is no great shakes here .. the biggest selling point here is -- it has no miles. His asking price of $32 is fair to say the least, that's as close to a wholesale figure as I have seen, it will do that at the auctions, go back at let's say $31, but don't loose it. What are waiting for ...?
Terry.
Black guts in South FL and no roof?
Bill
OK, So its' Cashmere Beige with Ivory.
1) Dealer who hit it at $22K did one of two things. a) They are light on it by an easy $500-1,000. Its a $23K++ car assuming the following: b) They looked at this immaculate car, no paintwork, little fried slivers of starchy roots in between the seats, cigarette lightsers are parts-counter fresh, etc.. And, even though it doesnt have a sunroof and/or leather, they decided to go beyond stepping up on it.
I.E. Roof, Leather, CD... 28K.. In the wrapper, no paint..
$23K all day long, could even do $24K to the right buyer. These GSs are pretty darned good merchandise, and this sounds like a peach.
Bill
Ok let's see .. a little "wango tango' on the fender and hood, but if it is a "no see em" ..and the right color, it shouldn't hurt too bad --- I'm thinkin it's worth -around- $9/$10ish .. IF, it's all there and that paint work is puurrrfect and the interior looks even newer..on the retail side, I cant see why you couldn't "ask" $13/$14 ...
These are a funny breed -- I have seen some crazy figures asked..and gotten --- On the wholesale as well as the retail side.
Bill -- what do you think on this one ...?
Terry.

My co-worker totalled his 1996 Chrysler Concorde on New Year's Eve (he walked away, but the car is done- hit head-on at 40+mph). It had 102,000 miles on it, it's an LXi loaded with everything (leather, CD, power all, 3.5, sunroof). I was wondering how they would figure out how much to give him for it? He said the insurance company (State Farm) doesn't use KBB or NADA guide for prices. So how would they figure out what to give him, and anyone know about how much? Thanks alot.
